Used one of these for a 66 day solo kayak trip. I have the old style door zipper and I never had trouble with it in the mud etc. I found it very handy when breaking camp as it was easy to access the entire length of the interior. I'm small, 5'7 and I always thought that it would do for two people in a pinch if you were good friends. Went through numerous big thunderstorms along The Black Sea fully exposed to wind etc on the beach and it did great.
You didn't even have to say anything. I liked how you showed the setup SLOWLY and laid it out so plain for me to see. It's been 4 years since I last used this and totally forgot. Two other videos were so fast and showed nothing. THANKS!!
This tent would be perfect for the Florida Waterway thing. The 6 day trip one that goes through the Everglades and you can camp only on the platforms provided.
Always stake down your tent first and close all the tent doors BEFORE attaching poles. You'll keep your tent from blowing away - could be disastrous depending on where you are pitching your tent, and the pitch will be tighter and geometrically correct, requiring less fiddling and will help avoid poor performance in inclement weather.
Nice work! Nothing wrong with a little versatility in the gear room. Good choice also! There has been a few times I could have saved miles by using a tent; searching for the right trees.
Great review video Mark. I've had the Copper Spur UL2 for about 5 or 6 years now and its holding up great. Although I usually hammock now I'm holding onto my tent. Actually I am taking it on the JMT next year, fires permitting :-(. I did notice one thing that your probably not aware of. All the loops down the center of the tent are for hanging the LED light strip that BA also sells. My buddy has the tent that has the built in lights, but I prefer the option of not putting them in, even though i did buy them.
You're right, I was not aware of the LED light strip, that's kinda cool! I'll have to look that up. Thanks! And good luck with the JMT, I've done sections of it and it's a beautiful trail, unfortunately it's gotten so popular that getting permits has become an issue and for people who have to travel to get to it, makes it one that you can't bank on.
I wonder why so many tents are bright colours now. I spend most of my time trying to find hidden camp spots and the last thing i want is an orange tent!
I completely agree! I specifically look for colors that will blend in with my environment in case I need to stealth camp! I want the 2020 version but it only comes in orange... I guess I’ll have to get bright orange!
When I do a tent trip, my friends ask if I have lost my mind. Used a tent on my last trip because possible that I might camp in a place difficult to hang. Still WAY nicer to chill out in a hammock. This is a nice tent though.
I used to tent camp all the time, but once I figured out the hammock thing, for me there is no comparison in terms of comfort. But that doesn't mean that's all I can do! Thanks!
I just picked up the HV UL2 on sale....it was the same price as the UL1. I'm a bigger fella, so I was concerned about how tight the smaller tent would be. It's a little heavier, but it will be nice to have some room to spread out and be comfortable on solo trips, but also if my wife ever decides to take up backpacking with me....I've got room, haha.
Nice review. Just bought the latest "bike pack" version of the 2 person HL UL-2 that fits more readily in my motorcycle side bags for camping, thanks to the poles breaking g down to just 12.5 inches. One suggestion: You might use less volume on the music, next time, so that your commentary is easier to hear.
Great presentation and great channel! I like keeping my gear inside, even though it requires a heavier tent, so I think I would opt to go "2P". The REI Quarterdome SL2 is only about 6 ounces heavier and not expensive when on sale. Also there are other 2P options that are light enough for 1 person. The Big Agnes Copper Spur 2 Platinum, Tiger Wall UL2 come to mind. Plus the Nemo Hornet Elite 2P.
I also just picked up a Zpacks Duplex, at 20oz it is a great option as a 2 person shelter that's still as light or lighter than most 1 person options! Thanks!
@@SpiguyverBackpacking1 A lot of people are not so fond of the Duplex. It can work fine in dry weather though for 1 person (It's only 45" wide). From the PCT Gear Guide: "The Zpacks Duplex was the most common shelter for Pacific Crest Trail thru-hikers this year - it also had the lowest rating of the five most-common shelters used by PCT hikers. The rest of the top five were all Big Agnes shelters."
OK after research I found two pretty serious issues with the Big Agnes tents. One, the "waterproof" feature is only 1200mm, which I'm pretty sure most umbrellas can beat. secondly, the bungie cords in the tubes are very thing and wear out fairly quickly. Ultimately this is a one year lifespan tent; nice when new but wears out quick.
Interesting. I didn't have any issue with mine in the rain, and I know a lot of people are using them as their shelter for thru hiking. Thanks for sharing your research on this. As a side note, I have sold mine and moved to a Zpacks Duplex. Thanks!
Thanks Devin! I figured you'd enjoy this one! I had an expensive hammock setup that I traded for this one. I am super stoked with the trade, worked out well for both of us!
I don't know, the Big Agnes tents are pretty great for what they are. And price wise, you can get two of these for the cost of the Zpack tents. I do have a Duplex and sold this one though, so I get what you're saying. I have heard pluses and minuses about both companies from users though.
T C have several weeks of nights, with footprint w/ vestibule coverage. Fits the Helinox ultra light hammock. Double wall design keeps dew away and secured tight in winds. Great 1 person
I need a free standing tent so I can air travel and not check my bag, so no stakes, trekking poles etc. I think I can do that even though this tent has the shock cord poles. Small casual trips so not my normal UL DCF tarp set up.
I just bought one and really like it but the footprint I bought is not tight at all. It is way too loose. I do not see a way to tighten it. Any thoughts ?
Love this video! As others have said the best right paced, informative and clear instructive setup video! Thank you! I thin lots have to do with your pleasant energy as well! I am buying this one but a bit concerned if on windy nights it can be a bit windy due to the rain fly not reaching all the way down and the inner being mostly mesh? Any experience of draught?
Not much in the way of draft, honestly, but it can be a bit noisy as getting every bit of it tight takes a lot of back and forth and using all the pull outs, which means adding extra stakes. It's a great tent though! Used it in 35 mph winds with no big problems (other than having too low R value pad!).
Spiguyver Backpacking Ok well that sounds good then! Thanks for the info. Those extra stakes are included right? Or does it require more than comes with the tent?
Mark, It's been more than 2 years since i've backpacked with a tent... how are you packing it. And keeping the potentially wet parts from the dry parts. It's soo easy to just stash my tarp in the mesh of the ULA... but the tent with bag and poles and all
Nice review. I see you sold it, but when you had it, would you say the footprint is a necessity? Trying to go light, but I’ve seen some complaints that the floor is a bit easy to rip without the footprint.
Daniel S you need the footprint if you want to use it the way I did without the inner tent body, or the rain setup I showed. The floor is pretty thin, but I did use it one night without it and had no problems. I would probably opt for it though.
I think it would be a little tight. I'd throw the question out on some of the forums or FB groups, as someone your height might have some experience with this or one that would work better for you. I'm just too short to know what would be a good one for you!
Thanks. It seems like all the 1P tents are 88 inches or less. My Mountain HW EV3 is 114 inches which is significantly longer so I am concerned 88 inches will be too short. I will keep looking.
You can check the Big Sky Revolution 1P tent that is 96 inches in length that can set up the easily during rainy weather as it is with external pole system
How could you.... UNSUBSCRIBED....🤣 Hey... when you convert to being a ground dweller... you gonna start deep discounting your 14 hammocks? Ha! Big Agnus makes some great tents... you should be pretty comfy.... great choice!
I actually did. I was looking for a tent, and I had a hammock system that is really popular that I was looking to trade for a tent. I had considered a couple of Nemo tents, I have owned quite a few Tarptents in the past, but when I was asking around, the BA Copper Spur kept coming up. A friend posted one for sale, he had won it in a raffle, and so we made the trade!

I like how you explained the rainy-day setup (with the fly setup first). Very informative review.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks!

For sure a free standing tent would be the perfect option and this one is great!
Getting ready for my first overnight backpacking trip and I bought this tent. I set it up for the first time today and this helped me a TON! Thanks!
Hope you enjoy it! Thanks!
Thanks for this very informative review! So many leave me still wondering about set up. Very thorough!
Happy to have helped!
This is the only video I've seen that actually shows setting the rain fly first/tent second for rain scenario.
It's an effective way to keep the body mostly dry.
Great tip!
I have the same tent for the same reasons. Your review was by far, the best I've seen, thanks!
Wow, thanks! I appreciate that very much! I think this is going to be perfect for what I was looking for.
Nice work! Nothing wrong with a little versatility in the gear room. Good choice also! There has been a few times I could have saved miles by using a tent; searching for the right trees.
Not at all! Thank you! It's not always easy to find 2 great trees to hang from, and if you're with others it can be even harder.
I have the original version of the cooper spur and have never got my door dirty. It's pretty easy to put the door inside when zipped down.
That's true, thanks for your input!
Excellent review thanks Spiguyver.
Thank you!

Henry Godfrey You’ll appreciate the next tent I’ll be doing a video on.
It comes in an olive green now .

The original has better colors and the fly is one solid grey color.
awesome video, thank you
Thanks man!
What comes to zippers on tents, I´d recommend to check Helsport tents and those 360 zippers. Way better than normally seen on tents sold in the US.
I'll take a look.
"Right tool for the right job".

Thanks! Looking forward to watching your HST video tonight!

Love that tent! Nice review Mark!
Thank you! So far it seems like it'll be perfect for what I need.
Спасибо! Хороший рассказ! Отличная палатка! :)
Um, okay! Wish I could read Russian! I used google translate, thanks!
So much better available. Between the insulation free bag bottoms and what z pak is doing..looks like Big Agnes is little tiny whimpy Agnes now.

Best review on this tent I ever seen thx
Wow! Thanks! I appreciate it!
Nice review , I really like that tent.
Thanks, it's a nice tent!
Awesome review man. Just picked up my 2019 hv ul1 for the AT coming up.
Brandon Leach Thanks! Man, I’m so jealous of the adventure you’re about to go on!
How many nights did you do in the tent? How was it?

I haven't figured that out yet, but I will probably do like I do with my hammocks and tarps, and keep the wet on the outside of the pack. Thanks!
Great review. Does the 2lb 2oz trail weight include the foot print, or would you have to add that on ?
I will have to check and get back to you.
@@SpiguyverBackpacking1 it’s ok. Don’t knock yourself out. I just thought you might already know. Thanks.
Have you taken a look at the tiger wall ul1 ?
I have, but ended up going with the Duplex from Zpacks.
@@SpiguyverBackpacking1 yeah u r not alone . I'm still looking but the Plex looks terrific and I like a smaller space. ..but the $$$$!

Useless in high winds. So the UK market is out of bounds.
