It wasn't as good as Z but I really enjoyed GT as well, especially the SSJ4. What I mostly disliked was Goku becoming a child again and not going back to adult form so that he could properly say farewell to his wife Chichi (a simple kiss, hug, and "I love you" would've been a nice touch for the fans), but it is what it is.
@@itsokayguys Vegeta's character development in GT is probably the most underrated thing in the show. All I see people talk about is annoying shit like "bro he stopped fighting, how could anyone like him". In GT they actually followed the direction he was taking at the end of the Majin Boo arc by making him get stronger for his own sake rather than specifically to suprass Goku. Super on the other hand completely caved to fan response and regressed his character back to that early Boo arc "All I care about is being stronger than Kakarrot!" bs that should be completely hammered out of his head at this point. I'm 99% percent sure that Funimation completely removed that line in GT about Vegeta wanting to surpass his own limits in the English dub which only added to the confusion and the misplaced criticism because of course they would. Afterall, that kind of mistreatment of their fans and their source material is what Funimation specializes in.
I agree. I didn't really like baby as a villain and didn't really get invested in GT since I was in elementary school and focused on that but when the part when ssj4 came up, I actually took the time to watch it. Ssj4 was such a cool transformation and ssj4 gogeta was even cooler Edit: I actually didn't mind the while shadow dragon arc as a whole
SSj4 made GT better, but then it got trash again during the Super 17 arc and ended with a slightly better but ultimately mid arc (shadow dragons). GT is a bad show, but its not THAT bad. I don't get why it has so much hate. It's not my favorite dragon ball series but dragon ball is dragon ball, more content is never bad.
Why is this so true after they came back to earth that’s when I tuned in and it’s not bad but the eng dub why hard to watch even as a kid only thing that felt right wit the eng dub was the intro 😭😭
To me what stopped me from enjoying GT at least in the first arcs is that putting an overpowered Goku in settings more similar to the first Dragon ball anime just killed the suspension of disbelief for me, I mean did the writers really spect me to take seriously an scene where Goku is afraid of bullets and runs from them? Even in the first Dragon ball Goku could take and axe to the head and survive what the hell where they thinking!
@@jaisotheunfathomablybased7135 oh, well I only watched 1 or 2 episodes of the original dragon ball lol. But he wasn’t like bleeding or anything right? As if it were a mosquito bite or something?
GT has underdeveloped characters like Uub and Goten. They made Pan annoying and a burden to Goku for almost every episode. Goku and Vegeta, i can say have the consistent and impressive character growth, specially Vegeta. Too bad they showed little of Vegeta. Some episodes were repetitive, i guess thats almost every anime back in the 90s. Fight scenes were step down from DBZ. Having said that, i like how they made references from db and dbz, plus the ending was very good and sad and really well made. OP song is timeless. SSJ4 is the coolest and most fitting ultimate Saiyan form.
I think Pan was decent , i didn't expect much from a kid . Literally the episode where she sneaks in the spaceship and just starts it off to go with Goku and Trunks because people weren't giving her attention gave me a good idea what was in for . She does help multiple times especially when he reminded Goku of his identity and purpose when he was a golden great ape , but not the amount which would compensate for the amount of burden she is . I just she should've been less of a burden , being a bit annoying makes sense and i can take that much .
Only thing i hate about GT Goten is the Gohan style haircut. He has same haircut like Goku when he was a kid. They could have used the same hair but edit it a little.
@@Zargex" He had the same haircut like Goku when he was a kid " , that's not GT Goten that guy was in dbz bro . And in terms of editing a little GT Goten doesn't have the same haircut as Gohan .
12:00 "I'd rather watch something that bores me than something that makes me want to question if I should ever be a fan of the franchise" And with that being said. I'm out of here. Great Video.
Meh I agree even the Buu series kind of made the series boring to me personally as I was expecting Gohan to take the mantle and when he didn't and they brought back a zombie Goku that was it for me...
The things I loved the most about GT were seeing the new worlds, environments, characters, creatures, the exploring, also the art style was beautiful, the music was on point with what was happening at the moment. It has a huge fanbase in south america to this day and as you said most of it was because of the dub team(they brought back a lot of the original voice actors) so the nostalgia still played a huge role in the success of it.
I'm so glad I watched GT as a kid because in my memory and even when I rewatch its 10/10 I didn't take it too seriously it was just fun and goofy story of the characters I loved from the old Dragon Ball
I just love dragon ball, I know we can hate but I choose not to. I'm happy that more DB exists, yeah GT wasn't the best and Super has it's moments but I just love these characters and wouldn't have them any other way
SAME :D Super Saiyan 4 made a ton of sense directly based off ozar (giant ape) lore from the saiyan race. Needed a tail and moon energy, it felt like a direct evolution of the great ape form. While golden blond hair of SSJ1-3 is iconic, it doesnt fit the aesthetic from great ape.
@@HyouVizer Exactly. After ss4, I looked at the golden hair forms as like a diluted form of super saiyan. Neither Goku nor Vegeta had their tails when they first transformed so the result was a sort of false super saiyan, which is why there’s so many levels. Years later, goku gets his tail back, turns oozaru then golden oozaru, and finally ss4. It plays perfectly into the saiyan’s lore of the legendary super saiyan.
The thing I liked most about GT was that it focused on the name of the show “Dragon Ball” and really implemented it. If it wasn’t so rushed and had more help from the creator (not shaming him) it would’ve been one of the best shows out there.
You hit the nail on both of the series GT is slow and boring sometimes while Super has had me making rants and struggle to understand how someone could let that slide
one day I'll get around to watching super, but until I do GT remains the worst of DB content. Though the series really peaked with Frieza. I go back and forth over Cell or Buu saga's being worse, and which I prefer. I didn't watch GT until years later and struggled to get to the end of Super 17.
@@Cargoshots More like gold flakes on a turd is what that arc was like tbh. I don't wanna knock on anyone but frankly the bar is ridiculously low for most DB fans nowadays and the zamasu arc is really only liked because future stuff, evil goku and fusions. Ending was doodoo butter.
@@Cargoshots Never said I was gt fan btw. I just frankly dislike the blind fanboyism that's been the reason for the low quality story we've been getting from toei. Gt's only strength for me was ssj4 and super only hooked me in the final arc but only cause of ultra instinct. Unfortunately when you look past the colors and the galour, then you realize the show is amazingly worthless when it comes to competent story telling and decent writing. I do have to apologize for my respond earlier though since I think I was a bit miffed for some reason.
Dragonball GT was great. Pan and Goku was a great team up. King Tuffle was a badass and had a genuine reason to hate Saiyans. Most Dragonball series have boring parts in it. I never felt like that during the original series or what I have seen of GT. Figurines of Super Baby would be awesome but they seem expensive on ebay.
You have to be straight up blind to say that. I like GT but the first 20 episodes were ALL boring. It probably has the most boring episodes out of any dragon ball series imo.
Oh my God gt fanboys are delusional lol. So you NEVER felt bored during the entire first arc, the middle and end of the baby saga, the entire s17 arc, and the shadow dragons?
I watched GT when I was a child, but as a Brazilian I can say that our dub made GT timeless, specially with the opening... Dude, it still gives me chills, the show was almost perfect and I loved it so very much. Except of boring episodes, and the frustration that Goku became very weak until he got ssj4, Dragon Ball GT was one of my favorite shows. Also in 2000s I watched Avatar, DBZ, Yu-Gi-Oh, and others. Honestly my childhood was blessed by these shows.
The problem with GT was it was a follow-up to Z, a masterpiece and eternal classic. Nothing could've followed that up. Also if DB Super had come out immediately after Z it would've gotten criticized so much harder than GT did
@@vmaru3951 i mean, you could watch the dragonball heroes promo series, even though it isn't cannon, ssj4 goku and vegeta make regular appearances and have a big role in the plot
As someone that watched DBGT in the 90s while growing, we were devastated when Z ended and were extremely excited when GT came out. The thing we had issues with was the art style change and not so much the story, the story was decent and Toriyama had a lot to do with the story because even though he stopped writing Z back in those days he still helped out on GT
So, I recently actually went through watching all of the dragon ball series from the beginning, and it should be noted that I had next to 0 knowledge of dragon ball up until last year when I started this (to the point where my wife was annoyed with my dumb questions, like "is goku also a prince?" since she has watched everything back in the day haha). To me, GT felt just very contrived. - And while I can understand the perspective on the baby arc, as a villian. It felt like the writers basically said "What if we do the android/cell saga again, but with aliens" because it's in a lot of way a 1:1 copy of it. It felt unoriginal. The other thing that annoyed me, is the whole concept of the black star dragon balls basically ignore all the lore about how the dragon balls came to be, and how earth got a set of dragon balls to begin with. It was basically all adhoc trying to create a series without paying credit to the source material. In isolation, I could respect the series maybe, but just even the last episodes of DBZ with Uube felt off. And then Goku becoming a kid, and once again being dumbed down to the mental capacity of a toddler, it just felt weird honestly... (Felt like Goku grew smarter throughout Original Dragon Ball, then sorta had a middle ground in DBZ for half, until they dumb'd him down again and again... but he was allowed his moments... Until DB Super [edit: orignally typed DBZ by mistake] where he somehow didn't know what a bloody kiss was... Like... FFS... Why does he have to be so dumb... or GT where just nothing except score and fatting would make it through his head. ) I do agree on one thing though, the idea of the dragonballs gathering too much negative energy, and that whole final arc was actually really original and interesting and I thought it had merritt and created a nice plot device to show why the dragon balls aren't the solution to everything and can't just be used so nonchalantly to wish for bullcrap like they often are...
DB GT: Plus - 3 good fights, - one really interesting villian, - SSJ4, - music, Minus - can be boring at times, - no SSJ for Pan, - characters lack proper development - final arcs can make no sense, DB Super Plus - SSJ God, and UI for Goku, - Vegeta has a really proper development, - Golden Form for Frieza (he got a new form after 25 years), - 3 really awsome story arcs, - animation and fight scenes are the best in DB history, - future trunks arc is really awsome, - well done multiverse Minus - first two arcs cover up the two movies that were released prior to the anime, - in early stages animation can turn out people, - Gohan got nerfed - power scaling Bonus. Did you watch out the awsome DBS Super Broly movie? Final verdict DB Super is a better sequel to DB Z anime, then DB GT. However DB GT is a must watch for every DB fan, because it has some really good moments like SSJ4 transformation, or Super Baby storyline arc. PS. If you have still only negative opinion about DB Super go and watch the atrocity american live action movie Dragon Ball Evolution (worst thing to happen in Dragon Ball history).
I never thought gt was bad, I always thought that z put the bar so high that was difficult to reach making people believe that if it was as good as z then it was completely bad. i personally think gt had some of the best ideas of the 2, ss4, baby as a villian, i like the concept of general rildo. and in the end showing the consequences of over using the dragon balls.
Indeed, GT had special keys and a perfect conclusion all-around. Those things made it a gem to wrap up the franchise, it did it well and especially with DB-style, especially in its characters. The GT final special, the songs, the characters, the moves, the SS4, the villains... great stuff.
The overuse of dragon balls is an idea that can fit in well with OG DB as well, too bad it wasn't well executed in GT but it's a good idea nonetheless.
baby yeah.... super C17 and the dragons meh i really liked the voyage part more than "i am the big bad which Will take 10 epsiode to kill" fortunately they didn't do this aga- *Jiren* ..... uuuuuuuh
Bro GT was horrible. The villains were extremely bland, repetitive in goals, shallow and surface level with no depth at all. Forget depth they didn’t even have good traits like frieza. Non of the worlds are memorable. There’s even a pedo in one of them lol. Horrible writing. Baby was the only solid villain even he was wasted potential
@@Mepphy99 I liked the Dragons. The first Arc got a bit boring and hard to follow at times albeit it was a good idea and the Super 17 arc was entirely pointless. I never watched GT, but from what you've shown here, it feels like it adds complexity that keeps the Dragon Ball formula from being solved with, 'Blow everything up as hard as possible.' Characters actually have to think about how to solve the problem, instead of just screaming louder. Repeatedly, our heroes' strength is used against them, turning the paradigm of power-leveling on its head and questioning the underlying assumptions of the franchise. Because they're not fighting on flat concrete arenas or abandoned mountainsides, a lot of the collateral damage feels more _grounded,_ raising the stakes. We can see how just being _around_ Goku is enough to short out computers and shatter lightbulbs. The scenery is full of lovable alien wildlife that Goku and the gang have grown attached to. It's _tangible._ It's that 'world of cardboard' that Superman talks about, and it applies interesting limitations that make fights _more_ compelling. Letting loose and nuking the map is easy; responsibility and restraint are the next level.
I always felt that exact same thing. GT brought novely not only in the worlds explore, but also the areas fought on. It had done away with the generic wasteland. So wether it be Baby leveling cities to the ground, all populated by people posessed by him, or in Super 17's saga where hell is literally brought on Earth, it feels like there is actually something to be lost. Especially since we find out there is a limit to the dragon balls and you cant simply revive everyone forever.
Not only was this a good video, but you also seem like a genuinely decent human being for being considerate of others’ opinions! Lol. Also, great soundtrack to this video and I’m glad you listed the songs in the description
When you said the reason that GT ranks > DBS I couldn’t help but feel that on another level. I love Dragon Ball as much as the next guy but I’d be lying if I said there weren’t multiple times DBS made me mad, I won’t indulge in what made me mad but I’m sure it was similar or the same reasons as you. Honestly this was a beautifully constructed video and I agree with mostly all you had to say. I honestly think it was the dub too for GT that ruined the series, I’ve currently finished the Super 17 arc and so far I’ve really enjoyed Baby and 17 more than I anticipated going into GT. I’m having that same issue tho with the Shadow Dragon Saga, most of the dragons are so underwhelming that it’s taking me a while to finish the show. Overall tho I definitely enjoyed the score and dialogue in sub rather than the dub. Again great video man and I hope you blow up more.

@@jaisotheunfathomablybased7135 big facts. Also just hate how their characters look. There’s no way they are saiyains. Cabba looks like he weights 60 pounds smfh. The universe survival arc didn’t feel like a battle to survive at all. Wasn’t tense until the movie.
@@duckyh9712 Ok I don't understand an argument like this " there is o way they are Saiyans. abba looks like he weights 60 pounds smfh". It is very simple it is a different universe they don't need to look like universe 7 Saiyans. It would be stupid if they would look the same.
GT was so bad that when i got to see it, it started a day after Z had ended, so, DB was still on the top of its game in my country, and i could only tolerate it for 5 episodes before quitting. It is so bad and uninteresting. It tries to be like the first DB and fails in every single way, then it decides to bring the fights of Z in, and fails at that too. This was 20 years ago and i still watched only some clips here and there, and the final scenes to wrap it up. A filler show with filler quality episodes, i couldn't care less.
it had a good idea for a story. it made sense. baby came back to get revenge for the saiyans for destroying hid home world. and goku and vegeta being one of the last pure saiyans still alive. then 17 being resurrected, omega shenron makes a lot of sense. the z fighters have been over using the dragonballs and because of that the shadow dragons were born. ssj4 also feels a lot more logical. i also like how they dug back to their saiyan roots to achieve ssj4
I’ve always loved DBGT (it was my brothers all time favorite), but now that I’ve been looking at this type of videos about DBGT, I’m starting to look at it differently, but it doesn’t stop me from liking it still. One thing however was I wish I could’ve seen was Vegeta having the will to turn into a ssj4 at any time instead of having to use a machine.
Bruh Moment, Vegeta do want to surpass Goku, but the fact that Goku trains more harder then Vegeta is mind-blowing, Vegeta doesn't wanna waste lots of time to turn into ssj4, so Vegeta took the easy route by using a machine of bloods-wave
@@Leoking8y I would agree, if not for so facts: 1. In GT Vegeta gave up on surpassing Kakarot and is just training for the sake of it and protecting his family. 2. Vegeta spend a lot of time training and might be stronger then Kakarot, because Kakarot was busy with the galactic travel thing. And 3. The bloods-wave machine didn’t turn him into the ssj4, only the ozaroo, the rest of ssj4 transformation he had to do himself. And besides we know Vegeta does go an easy route for power like: • creating the artifishal moon in his first battle against Kakarot, • exploiting the zenkai boost, by asking Krillin on Namet to amoust kill him, • selling his soul to Bobidy and becoming a Majin just to be on the same level as ssj2 Kakarot
@@graveslayer9666 I know the bloods-wave didn't turn him into a ssj4 you idiot, geez you young people today, it help him go into a oozaru aka taking a faster route to getting his tail even if he's a oozaru, it's call having a smart brain better then you... 😏
GT regressed Vegetas character tbh, it was sad to see him have to rely on a machine to catch up to Goku. Vegeta lost his Saiyan pride is seen as "character development" to GT fans. His only use was to help Goku become Gogeta 😪
As for SpongeBob, I don’t know if you knew Stephen Hillenburg (the show’s creator) was back on show before his passing which helped improve the show’s quality. Also, just because the show was wearing thin in quality didn’t necessarily meant they stopped putting in effort in making quality content. That’s the result of having to write for a show that’s been going for over a decade. Plus, there were actually some pretty good episode ideas that were original which fell flat due to new writers being on the show.
I'm convinced that Nickelodeon and a lot of the current Spongebob staff did not give a shit about Stephen Hillenburg. Stephen Hillenburg was pretty famously known for not wanting SpongeBob to become too mainstream or too central to a brand, I believe he once said his biggest nightmare was him seeing a SpongeBob doll wash up on the beach. This very much included making no spinoff series of the brand, and the second he passed, what happened? Boom. Kamp Koral, The Patrick Star Show. Even if Nick WASN'T just waiting for him to die so they could shit out terrible spinoffs, (which it's likely they were), they were still incredibly disrespectful to the wishes of the creator of their biggest franchise after his passing. Same , i don't get people saying that it was bad , like i get wanting to see Goku in adult form again doing some good amount of fighting but disliking the decision of him turning into a kid , after what it did for the overall story is , i think just being too held on the adult physique . If someone told me this happens before me watching gt , i could've had the same reaction , but after watching it that was a good creative choice , the initial arc makes it feel like it's just for nostalgia but it brings a lot more new things later.
I still wanted to see adult Goku afterwards doing some fights but that doesn't make me dislike this , not only did it result in ssj4 but it added even more importance to it as he could only have his adult physique in ssj4
@@humanman9920 Also Gt dub came out in my country while I was in 4th grade...being a kid made me relate to Gt Goku but also since I already watched Dragonball it felt nostalgic in a weird ass way... weird as in good or bad depening on the fan. In my humble opinion it was great. Nostalgic and experimental. Then the ending...GT is still the best ending to Dragonball for me... Son Goku returning as an adult in the end soldifies the essence of Dragonball... have fun, make friends, love family, reedeem enemies, and create memories!! I do think that arc seriously just needed more time to expand beacuse it's where GT could have became what Super is now, but its okay. Its all abt the Balls Baby! Pun intended.
The real reason most don't like GT is actually fairly simple and boring. It's really tough to see something you love and enjoy fade into the past. GT's entire design and script from episode 1 felt like they were getting you ready to say goodbye to Goku and the gang for good. Only proven further when they show Pan as an old woman on the final episode speaking about her Grandpa Goku and how epic he was. In that sense... I don't blame any fan of Dragon Ball for feeling that way about GT. If you ignore that thought then the show was alright. Some good, bad, epic, terrible all mixed in. Pretty much how Dragon Ball has always been!
Cool review, I agree GT gets alot more hate than it deserves, so it's nice seeing some defense for it as there is legitimate merit to GT. Baby is easily the best villain GT ever put out, and I like that Toei portrayed him as a villain who sees himself as the avenging hero...But I disagree that he's only the villain because the Saiyans he is out to exterminate are the only ones who don't deserve it (Vegeta arguably does given his countless death toll), he also took over the entire population of Earth, mostly Humans, who are innocent in this blood feud. Baby may see himself as the hero but his actions, personality and goal are downright evil. It's hard to be the hero when your strongest attack is called the *"Revenge Death Ball"* - not very heroic. He also kills Dr. Myuu just to get his Dragonball power source, without a shred of hesitation or regret. I think this was done on purpose by Toei so they could have their cake and eat it too. Have a villain who sees themselves as the hero, but the audience isn't going to sympathise with. Though it muddies his characterisation where Baby is seemingly indifferent to how stereotypically evil he behaves in his revenge ploy. All that said, GT has the best ending in the entire franchise.
most people prefer to ignore it but lemme tell you it is BELOVED in south america my dad and uncles from both sides of my family including younger member of this generation will inmediately recognize the intro and the most memorable saiyan form alongside SSJ1,2,3 is the fourth form if you go to a mexican streetmarket selling bootleg toy the most common ones are recolors of the SSJ4 form
I enjoyed GT as much as allowed. My only argument against GT comes to episode pacing. An episode is roughly 20 mins long. Each episode opens with about 5 mins of recap from the previous episode. Suddenly each episode is only about 15 mins of new story/content. My "fix" would have been to shorten the opening, closing credits and the recap, in order to offer closer to 20 mins of new story content. When played for TV all they had to do was cut the recap to allow for commercials. That's literally my only gripe.
I honestly didn't like GT or Super.....I didn't finish either episode. On another note GT....well..... Goku shouldn't have been a kid again:/ and Pan truly got on my nerves 😡
I consider GT and super to be two separate timelines. Kind of like trunks timeline. In one time lines, they branched into SS4, in another they discovered GodKi 🤷
From what someone told me there actually is 2 different timelines, one of them is 10 years after the Majin Buu saga (which leads to GT), and the other saga is one year after the Majin Buu saga which is when dragon ball super starts, but the last episodes of DBZ was going towards the DBGT side but yeah.
@@BruhMoment-xl5yx Pretty much. I have no clue why people still think Super takes place before the end of Z, the reveal of SSG, SSB, etc should've threw the end of Z out the window.
@@AlmightyKing143 well technically the last like 2-3 episodes of DBZ is 10 years after the Majin Buu saga where it’s like the episode of goku vs uub in the tournament then they fly off. So if you remove those last 2-3 episodes then it would’ve made sense but beats me why it was like that
@@BruhMoment-xl5yx there are 4 different main timelines which branch after DBZ. Let me explain 1. The Manga of DBS takes place after the DBZ Manga 2. The Anime of DBS takes place after the DBZ anime 3. The Non-canon Super movies which include BOG, RF and the Broly 4D movie take place after the movies 4. Dragon Ball GT is an alternate future to the Super Movies which also take place in the movies
GT was great man, especially watching it with my brother back in the day in front of the tv. It had a retro feel that’s timeless. As an adult I don’t have any care to follow anime, I read manga instead. So DB being retro for me is fine. Plus baby was a cool villain. Ssj4 was cool because of the gorilla transformation that dragon ball super completely ignores. That’s a huge part of the saiyan lore.
Super is better than GT, besides Pink Goku arc lol. It's not perfect but it's mindless fun. Excuse me, but wtf is a Cyan? Do you mean Saiyan? You just seem like a contrarian. You literally don't even want to call the race the show revolves around the same name 99.99% of people call it.
I love how back then people (including myself) hated GT but ever since we got Dragon Ball Pooper I realized I was too cruel to GT and gave it another and took back everything bad I said about GT
The reason i didnt like gt is cuz gt was too dark… and we didnt get to see all the amazing funny, humerous light hearted goku and vegeta moments that we got to see in z or with anyone else for that matter… everything in gt was just so depressing and creepy
I love GT's spirit of exploration and adventure, which was sorely missed towards the end of DBZ's run. If they had invested a bit more in the animation, and taken a little more time to flesh out the story it could've been some of the best Dragon Ball of all.
Side bit of trivia, the voice actor for Baby in Funimation is Mike McFarland, who also voices Master Roshi and Yajirobe :) So many actors do vastly different characters but I found that one particularly cool
TLDR: How some things are executed in both shows have their ups and downs but I far and away prefer GT's general approach to things that feel much more creative and interesting overall while Super's approach tends to feel more empty and lifeless in a lot of places. GT : Regresses Goku in power and focuses on the boon that Dragon Ball introduced space and aliens a long ass time ago and can realistically do whatever they want with that setting (Ignoring that OG DB did whatever it wanted in the first place most of the time). Super : Before it's even made has to roll with the fact that the "God Hierarchy" has been broken once again and a new upper echelon of raw power and/or bullshit has opened. I kinda feel like before Super as a show even came out it's "fate" in terms of what direction Dragon Ball would have to go in was sealed. Mind you battle of gods is probably my favorite DB movie if not for fusion reborn, But the introduction of Beerus and God Ki from a plot perspective really shot things into the stratosphere. Ascending past SSJ3 SSJ4 : About halfway(?) into the show and is based on going Super Saiyan during the long since forgotten and un-needed Oozaru transformation and mastering control over it which condenses and controls its power back into a humanoid state, This transformation being this way also links up with one of the main villains being that his home got crushed by the Saiyan's (Aka the raiders that went into Oozaru and fucked up planets and required Oozaru to even achieve Super Saiyan back then if ever which makes sense considering rage) SSG : At the very start of the show and is based on "6 good people of Saiyan blood" pooling their energy into one user to suddenly create God Ki in their body to save them against a ridiculously powerful enemy. There's also the whole Yamoshi's spirit thing which I honestly can't be asked to describe but its not like the new Saiyan's battle the old or anything again to finish that old conflict or something... There's also Broly's Wrath Form which is an SSJ4 themed way of explaining why Broly is so obscene compared to how the original Broly movie just kind of... had him be that way because he's a movie villain, Aside from headcanon's like his power constantly rising every second he took an unrestricted breath which also lead to his defeat. Villains I prefer the "Explore the Universe and its potential inhabitants" approach and focusing essentially on utilizing things that were pre-established in ways that feel at least some kind of smart and interesting instead of using pre-established things like Frieza and just straight up completely recycling them. I think Super does this a lot in many ways and I also think this is one of the main differences between how the two roll. Look at Omega Shenron and his "siblings". My man is literally a being of condensed greed that got created when our heroes A. Revived all of namek that got messed by Frieza so that they could live again AND to bring ANOTHER dragon back so that they got a freebie wish. and B. Abused the SHIT out of the Dragon Balls more and more repeatedly in a way that they weren't designed for as time passed. It uses the PRE-ESTABLISHED Dragon Balls which are technically the most important thing in the entire franchise and uses them in a way that's sort of fun and cheeky if you get me, Like a moment where you go "Ooooh I see what you did there..." Still kind of comes out of left field but you actually seem to have put some thought into this idea and it works thematically as well in some ways (4th star dragon ball being part of the whole re-tracing steps thing GT has going on) But when Super uses already treaded ground it just feels like a COMPLETE rehash most of the time even down to recycled scenes to try weaponizing nostalgia as opposed to working with the past events and objects to create new ones. If that sort of gibberish makes any sense. Meanwhile when it finally tries to make a brand new fully evil antagonist... You get Zamasu and fucking over Trunk's timeline to suck Future Trunks back into things PROBABLY because he's popular, And I honestly don't think I even have to say anything else for that one.
I think what made Battle of God work, is that even if it introduced a whole new tier of power, Super Saiyan God was only a temporary transformation and not even a thing Goku could do on his own. Moreover, even with that transformation Goku still wasn't strong enough to defeat Beerus. Goku was no longer the indomitable hero he'd been throughout most of the franchise, but was actually humbled in way that he hadn't really been since way back in his first tournament finals vs Jacky Chun. Instead of victory Goku walked away with some arguably more important, a glimpse at just how much stronger he could become and the determination to achieve that level through his own efforts. It could have been a good transition point to set up the Goku we saw in Z's epilogue when he fought Uub, but then the rest of Super happened with its parade of new transformations and characters pushing past their supposed "limits" so many times and in such short order that the word lost all meaning.
It's actually ssj3x Ozaru powerwise , cuz Super baby 2 was like an ssj3 . I enjoyed the BoG even thought it's a very cool direction , but i ended up imagining something they were never going to do and we just got some new fancy terms like god ki but working the same old power creeping way.
DBGT is trying hard to be original, yet struggles to not be a Dragon Ball series DBS is trying hard to be a Dragon Series, yet struggles to not look like an original series (that feels far away from Dragon Ball series) You've got a point there
That's why imo Super and GT are equally as bad GT tries hard to modify the world building, yet still trapped and somewhat consistent in previous Dragon Ball series world building and unable to separate itself from Z Super tries hard to keep consistent with previous Dragon Ball series world building, yet struggle to not modify the world building, ended up making Super feels like an alternate story that stray away from Z
DBGT is a 1 long run just to show 1 non-canon doodle art made by Toriyama and called it SSJ4, and showing new characters that actually fit to be placed in DB/Z character designs DBS is a 1 long run to show you plenty of recolored forms (to red, blue, white, black-white, gold, black, pink, etc, you name it) and introduction to characters that doesn't really looks like they could fit in DB/Z character designs Imagine Jiren in Z, can you picture what if such character in Z? Feels out of place, right? What about Baby? Baby actually could fit in Z? Fit nicely, especially around Frieza-Cell Saga
I tried desperately to like GT, but the very first episode was a disaster. You said "GT has never made you angry," but I remembered the disappointment from that very first episode. Turning Goku into a child recessed the series back into Dragonball - especially since the story mainly focused on gathering dragonballs in the beginning. Some of the characters I found were great, but as many have mentioned, the execution is incredibly poor. Super seems like a natural evolution of the series, rather than trying to capitalize or Reminisce on the success of Z. Super power extend into what is considered godly and the world is extended into multiple Universes. Dragonball GT for me and others just didn't feel like that and the story didn't seem to take any direction until Baby came along. By then, I was fatigued and everything just felt rushed. Instead of having an intermission between villains, the series just went right into the next.
IMO GT felt more like Dragonball as u said; with a little bit of Z tossed in. I do like how they evolved the SSJ in GT more than what they did in Super.
That’s cap though GT was not rushed at all especially in the first arc. Lord luud went to General Rildo and Doctor Muel and it lead to Baby, not rushed at all. Goku didn’t even need to try until baby vegeta.
@@nocappin9596: admittedly it's been a long time since I watched GT and so my memory could be playing tricks on me, but I thought Goku had that distinctive sparking aura during the more intense moment of their fight.
I’m not a fan of GT but the SS4 transformation is one of my favorites. I hate how they have gotten away from the Saiyans being Monkeys and this transformation is very Monkey like so I love it.
Gt was just so depressing. The z fighters never hung out chaotzu and tien were nowhere to be seen or mentioned , yamcha was living in the desert alone, piccolo was stuck in hell. Its just a sad nightcap to z. Hence why i enjoy super
I have nostalgia for the Dragon Ball GT dub because I grew up with the box set and watched it to death. (A hello to my fellow no cable squad) So while I didn't experience that horrible rap opening, I did experience the horrible dub. While I still like GT, rewatching it with the og Japanese subtitles is like watching an entirely different show. I went from liking the series to loving the series. The baby arc was something I would always go back too. What I'm not nostalgic for is the Dragon Ball Z dub. My introduction to the series was Kai on Nicktoons and later Kai uncensored via DVDs and online. I don't even see how's it a competition between which dub is better. Lastly, you're right about Super making me angry. I consider myself a life long Dragon Ball fan, but I have yet to finish Super. Why? Certain parts just piss me off. I dropped the series half way through the first season and only picked it back up now. And I'm still getting annoyed watching it. GT can make me laugh with a "that's stupid" but Super makes me roll my eyes with a "that's stupid."
Kai was/is great but even though the DBZ dub can be bad at time.. it’s what a lot of fans grew up with in the 90s and 2000s. Toonami and then taking to your friends about it next day at school (the frieza saga lol). At least for me it’s super nostalgic and what made me a fan!
I loved SSJ4. It's probably my favorite aesthetics transformation of any of the Saiyan forms. That alone made GT a good series. It wasn't great like Z or the ToP even, but it's still better than a lot of anime that get more air time IMO
Things GT did good. Better saga ideas Cooler transformation Good charcter development with everyone especially Goku an Vegeta. Goku seems more wise with his skill an abilities plus he's much quicker to kill than usual. An Vegeta changing his style especially when he got called a dork by his daughter lol an how he suggested fusion....z Vegeta would never do that which is why I liked it cause it showed how he's changed as a man/ warrior an knows what he loves is far more important than his pride.
I'm watching GT now and enjoying it for the most part, it was a bit of a struggle to get through the first few episodes but I warmed to it and it got better, I'm currently up to the Shadow Dragons arc. GT does have a lot going for it and there's lots of reasons why it's worth watching. I can't draw the same comparisons with the Super anime as I haven't seen it, I have however read all the localised Super manga and I've loved it since the first volume, it's very consistent in my opinion. I'm happy that both GT and Super exist, it's great to have more Dragon Ball.
Dragon ball z,and gt are good at letting characters fade into the background I feel like it would have been better to let characters go in a nice wrapped up episode or at least kill them off for good for an emotional appeal rather than just leave them hanging like they did
I loved the idea of GT when I first started watching it but I felt a lack of tension and desperation that I felt watching DBZ. We went from threats like Freeza, Cell and Buu to bad guy of the week and back then it was weekly. Where Z, at the time, was a different episode every day when I got into it. For GT I'd have to wait a whole week to watch Trunks dress up as a woman to cut off some monster's whiskers or watch the heroes forced into dancing by some dudes wearing ill-fitting sports bras. It was too much of a tonal shift that would take too long to get anywhere. Wasn't until years later that I caught it again on TV during the baby arc and while it was more entertaining, it just never gripped me the same as DB or DBZ did.
I'd argue your problem with the examples you mentioned stemmed from the fact you went into it thinking it was going to be Z part 2, when it just turned out to be the part 2 of the original Dragon ball. Meaning the tonal shift you speak of was it reverting back to the less serious and adventurous style of DB as opposed to the very serious shonen battle anime style of Z.
@@crpvillain8406 Yeah. Been meaning to give it another try. I finally watched the original Dragonball about a year ago and really enjoyed it so who knows, might enjoy GT for what it is instead of disliking it for what it isn't.
I’ve said this before and I’ll keep saying it. GT most definitely isn’t the best well written of the Dragonball franchise, but at least it had a story and added something the the series has needed for a long time. Consequences for overusing the dragonballs. They’re such a cop out that’s basically used to solve whatever problem arises to the point where death has no meaning and there’s no consequences in anything the characters do. It definitely had some good concepts, but the execution in my opinion was abysmal.
I actually love the GT but the problem was they stopped making it, it was confusing how goku was a child and then went adult but who cares the show was awesome
I don't think I ever hated GT, but I was highly critical of it, probably more so than it deserved. It wasn't until Super that I started looking back on GT with renewed fondness. I still think GT is a very flawed series, but at least it was also an ambitious series, one that looked at where Z ended and dared to ask that all important question, _"What happens next?"_ Meanwhile, Super squandered most of its potential to do the same by its very conceit. Instead of moving forward, everything is shoved into the time between Buu's defeat and the End of Z epilogue. Worse still, it doesn't even bother to try showing how any of the characters transitioned between those two intervals, Trunks and Goten being two of the most notorious examples for seeming to not even age at all. Heck, in its second half Super even seems to almost start moving backwards, for example Goku and Vegeta both reverting from the new outfits they got in Resurrection F to their more iconic Z outfits, seemingly for no other reasons than nostalgia pandering and brand recognition. Honestly, I just hope that whenever the next Dragon Ball anime starts up we could finally skip past the epilogue Z ended on, and once again ask that same question GT dared to... _"What happens next?"_
Even as someone who disagrees with you I still find myself genuinely agreeing and understanding your points. In the youtuber totally not marks’ video on the subject he essentially said what rings true to me hear: Which he prefers if purely dependent on what you specifically look for and prefer in dragonball. While I like super more, I can’t deny that super certainly gets me more mad. Even though tons of wasted potential and stupid shit happens in GT as well, its hard for me to truly get angry at it because i know that at the end of the day, none of what happens in GT is canon. It was never created for the sole purpose of being a true to heart spiritual successor of DB. It was made to sell toys and keep DB relevant, thats it. While a lot of what exists in GT shows that the people behind it cared, it also tells me that it was never 100% trying to be DB to begin with (and thats ok to me). Throughout the series but especially in the start, even the “worst things” happened elsewhere in the series, GT rubbed me the wrong way the MOST, when it tried just replicate DB. While not all the time, i feel GT hit a better stride when it was all around just trying to be its own thing. I even disagreed with your spongebob bit at the beginning!! Largely in part due to the fact that the now late creator returned to the series and brought a lot of the old crew back. It brought about a new era to spongebob as a series. And even After the creators passing, SB as a series began to do what i found similar in GT, just being its own new thing, rather than just tiredly recycling the same kind of plots and jokes. And like GT, sometimes the new ideas presented aren’t good, but I definitely appreciate the new era modern SB is in for trying. The show isn’t what it used to be, and i still prefer the old stuff, but i can genuinely appreciate the series finding a new identity in becoming something else. And this goes for GT and SB (hence why i brought it up) But on the topic of GT, i tend to see it a similar way to how i see Teen titans go or Sonic boom (the game AND the show) Both series were also never really created with the intent to be what it was before. And both series began to find their strength when they indulged in themselves rather than trying to replicate something we already knew. While both series are also starting to gain a cult following of “____ wasn’t as bad as we initially thought” EXACTLY like GT While some of the reasons people hated all 3 shows were and still are definitely, it’s undeniable that part of the larger fan scopes harshness towards them in the first place came from (like you said) a lack of nostalgia and attachment to them due to not growing up with them, expectations and judging them on a scale of how much they’re like their predecessor, and just downright they age old fear of whats new and unknown And lastly, while I do prefer the dubs and can admit that modern funimation dubs are way better than they were back in their hayday, you are 100% right on how the more choppy script changes and voice directions that would NEVER fly today, played a hand in peoples perception of Z. Similar to how 4kids and Dic created specific false impressions of what fracnhises like One piece, Sonic X, pokemon and sailor moon were actually about or even like to begin with. And no part hits harder than that than in GT’s english soundtrack (which i still love a lot btw) it gives off an energy that doesn’t always quite reflect the core themes of what GT was even about. Which is kind of a big deal when thats the entire purpose of a shows soundtrack 💀 Its honestly a shame really, with a redub and maybe a mix of the best of the english and mostly jp ost people wouldve grown on it a little more. Both in the past but also the present. But at the end of the day, the overall reaction to something new would remain the same and people would largely hate on principle anyways lmao
I mean yeah wow you really hit the nail on the head for most of that. Thanks for the respectful comment lol, I didn't expect this much thought to be put into this video, happy to hear it!
@@gubsy3730 yeah, i guess the TL;DR version is just that its easy to get over whatever GT does is because at the end of the day, it’s essentially a fanfiction/alt universe/potential future/elseworld story detatched from the actual main series in any real way yknow what i mean? Some people may read it in think i’m trying to say “because its for kids/to sell toys, that means we should settle for less or that kids don’t deserve actual quality content” And like??? No, just that its easier to appreciate something and not compare it to something else when you know it’s ultimately harmless at the end of the day, is detatched from that thing entirely to begin with. Its just its own thing. With super its obviously different. It doesn’t really matter if you choose to accept or deny how the goku black arc ended, it ACTUALLY happened, and theres no real going back on that. It IS canon and most of what happened to trunks in Z and super is all in permanent affect. Future gohan 100% died in vain and the world trunks fought for literally became a battleground that ceased to exist. They don’t even have an afterlife or anything to go back on, not even a shenron could fix it. Trunks failed, after all that he failed, and there’s no going back. It wouldn’t be so bad if they actually acknowledged and played into the tragedy of that outcome, but with the whole “neat little happy ending” bow they tied it all into just leaves an awful taste in so many peoples mouths. It makes the OG ending to his arc in Z come off as forever awkward. Literally none of the things that happened In GT retroactively affect the previous/ongoing canonical story permanently in anyway. So its easy to see how one is harder to get mad at over the other.
@@theradionicrevival8068 I typically don't care much about continuity argument, about what's "canon" and what's not, etc. Realistically the only thing that SHOULD be considered "canon" are the original 42 volumes of the manga written by Toriyama from 1984 to 1995. What I care most about for sequels is for them to justify their existence by being interesting, and in the case of DBS, I just do not think it is. I don't care if people call it "canon" to the story or not, (to repeat, I think what should be counted as "canon" is already on shaky ground), I just think Super is a bad story. I base my opinions purely on the quality of the content in relation to how well of a sequel it is to what it's following, not on whether or not I can feel justified in ignoring it. To be honest, I ignore most sequels while thinking about their original works. If I'm reading the early Dragon Ball manga, I take the assertion of Goku being a human monkey kid at face value, as that was the intention at the time. I don't let the later developments of him actually being an alien affect how I view previous stories. So the "it's okay for it to do what it wants to do because it isn't 'canon'" isn't something I agree with or consider. For me it all comes down to "If it's bad than it's bad, and if it's good than it's good", and I just believe that, in my opinion, Super is bad, and that GT is... decent.
"it also tells me that it was never 100% trying to be DB to begin with" No, even if poorly executed in term of storytelling, the story itself 100% loyal and want to be DB.
IMO, the baby saga kinda resemble the trope of red ribbon combined with buu elements, and kinda connected with freeza just because its about the planet Vegeta, its like all the bug bad villain of all the dragon ball franchise combined
GT is like the Prequels from Star Wars. When it came out, people loved it, then only a small portion of that audience still liked it while everyone else decided to hate on it. Then the Sequels came out, or in Dragonball’s case, Dragonball Super.
That analogy isn't correct because the majority of the fandom still prefers dbs to GT and dbs is more popular. With the prequal-sequal ananolgy, the prequals are more preferred and is more popular.
@@flamingcat1101 imo it goes like this: dbs manga >>> dbs > GT I think dbs is better than GT, but not by a lot. It's just easier for me to watch dbs and I like the characters and concepts for the story arcs more.
I completely disagree with everything you said (aside from GT not being bad - I did like it) but nevertheless, good video. Remember guys, you don't need to pick a side, it's fine to like both GT and Super. A lot of people feel forced to pick one just because they're both continuations of DBZ. At the end of the day it's all entertainment.
I agree you do not have to chose. And can like everything. In my case though I tried watching super and I really wanted to like it. But I hate it so much. I hate the art style, the writting, the lack of stakes...
@@Ignasimp Which is fair, you're free to dislike it if you want. Everything you stated is valid criticism. - However, in my opinion (and you may have a different opinion on this, which is fine), DBZ was just as full of writing inconsistencies and "convenient" plot devices. I think we were just young and didn't really mind them as much - nowadays, a lot of people, including me, are blind to these bad elements in Z, because of how nostolgic we are. There was a guy who wrote an entire list criticising everything in Z, and at first I doubted that it would be accurate but after reading it... yeah, I have to agree, there were definitely a lot of things in Z that were just there for the sake of being there. A lot of stuff that didn't make any sense. A few examples would be: - Goku is a saiyan, he was supposed to just be a "monkey boy" inspired by Journey to the West. - Goku trained for years, since he was a kid, to become strong; Gohan just got angry. - Vegeta magically learned to sense KI just by hanging around the Z-Fighters. - The Zenkai boost was just inserted to justify Saiyans getting stronger for getting owned. - This only covers the Saiyan saga and the Frieza saga, there are others but I think you get the point. I'm not trying to change your mind, just giving a few examples. At least that's how I see it. Also, artstyle is subjective, so I really don't have much to say on that. I personally like it, but I can understand why some wouldn't. Exchange of ideas is perfectly healthy, and I encourage it.
@@xiuhwho - Gohan trained with a much stronger master and started even youbger than Goku. And his power was very well anticipated many times and the way it worked was very consistent. Ad it was not that when he got angry he suddenly was stronger. He was that strong, he was always scared of letting it out except from moments of real danger. Vegeta even stablished before going to Earth that Saiyan hybrids were more powerful than pure saiyans. And we had seen glimpses of that power Gohan had many times before he became the SsJ2. If anything Gohan power was the best written piece in all dragon ball. Liking an art syle is subjective, that doesn't mean the quality of that art syle is. The art style in GT was objectively better than most if not all Z art style. And yes, Z had some problems, but you weren't that bothered from them because some of the elements were really great. In super there are not great things. There is no emotional weight in super except from the Zamasu arc, which I really enjoyed the start of it.
@@Ignasimp I disagree with Gohan's power. The point was in referance to when Raditz first arrived. Gohan had no training back then but was able to genuinely damage Raditz, who whooped Goku's ass. If you're referencing the quality in Super, I would like to point out that it was only inconsistent in the first half of the show. Obviously unacceptable. And yes, I agree that the art was better in GT. We agree on that, 100%. Though, I do think that Super had some really good moments as well. There's quite a bit emotional weight, even before the Zamasu arc. I don't think it's that much worse than Z, I'd argue it's on par.
Some of the first episodes I saw of gt was the baby saga and I loved it, then I watched the series all the way through a few times and I understand both the love and hate for the series, I watched super all the way through once and I personally didn't care too much for it and some of it made me angry, scratch my head, or wonder if I'm even watching the original work or a fan series, not to mention the hype of the tournament of power that didn't quite live up to expectations but some of it did feel like it was influenced by the original series with characters having odd abilities, or how the Goku black arc started out great then they messed up when they introduced an immortal Kai and I think many fans would agree that it should have been Goku from the future completely reverting to kakarot and just becoming bloodlusted after his family and friends were wiped out in front of him, and him training alongside gods he would learn of the time rings eventually because we know how curious Goku is, I could write an entire what if on this saga but that's not really my thing, but I might eventually rewatch on binge instead of just weekly and then I might reform my opinion on it a little bit
since Dragon Ball Minus exist, Toyotaro could have used that stupid bonus character with "oh yeah in an alternate timeline Goku became evil" since he loves putting his fanfic concept in the manga lol
I watched and enjoyed the subtitled GT. The interactions between Baby, Vegeta, and Trunks were hilarious. I thought the show deconstructed Z well and was almost a satire in ways.
Well thought out video, I almost completely disagree with you on all your points, but they are fair and i respect your opinion. I dont think its constructive to compare arcs like super vs GT or Z vs dragon ball. Each series is different in style and storytelling, each having its own strengths and weaknesses. Anyone who thinks any piece of art has no redeeming qualities is a fool. I'm of the mindset, if it's got dragon ball characters in it, i want to watch it.
I mean there's always gonna be comparison in super and gt cuz they both are alternative continuities of each other , i don't think either of them are straight up bad and i prefer gt more , i agree to almost everything the guy said in the video even when i'm of the same mindset . Like i enjoy most of db while watching but at the end of the day i'm gonna form my likes and dislikes when i think about it more.
@@gukeoke6312 I gotta disagree there. The ending of the Goku Black arc completely destroys any intrigue the story might have to tell given how blatantly pointless everything becomes once Zeno destroys everything and how awkward Trunks needing to live with an alternate timeline version of himself is if you think about it. Also, the fact that the Tournament of Power is basically 35 episodes of nonstop fighting with no breaks gets really tiring, and most of the content feels like filler to me. Hell, even the manga version of the ToP is bad, it just makes me believe that without a thorough reworking, the arc was just a bad idea to begin with. Totally okay if you enjoyed it though, I had some stuff that I gravitated towards even if I was disappointed with the end result.
After watching Super, and having it settle after 4 years I can say, that while the pacing was a bit bad, and they teased "final boss" too much, GT truly was the superior sequel. The story telling was still decent, a cool forms and interesting villans + no real mess ups with the animation. I love GT a lot more as the years have gone by. My biggest complaint was Goku being a kid again, but yeah.
The one off episodes when they go to a planet find a Dragon Ball then leave are all underrated each being fun or interesting Majority of the Baby arc was fantastic 17 was disappointing but had like 3-5 good moments and I think Dragon Ball Heros did the Shadow Dragons better making them events other then villain of the week
I'm not trying to be controversial or have a hot take, but I enjoyed Dragon Ball GT more. I thought the animation was better. Plot-wise I could go either way for GT or Super. But I liked that GT was more mature.
Damn so many digs for super on this. Super has some issues. But my god super is leaps and bounds beyond gt. The filler in super is great. And it actually introduces new and memorable characters. The worst thing is super is the power scaling and weird excuses for the lore. Super gives so many great moments to so many characters. All of the best moments after z happen in super and not in Gt. Gt does nothing to move the story and characters forward. In gt the characters don't even act right/out of character. Urghhhhh it was so so bad. But i appreciate that someone else is honest. Great video otherwise.
I hated GT but I love to hear both sides, and your voice and informative deconstruction is great. I can see you being great in the future and looking forward to more videos👍
When i first watched it and finished it as a kid, I honestly wished it was longer. I loved the fact that we got to see them all older... with new adventures and enemy's. The transformations were also on point. Super was the biggest disappointment to me, I can't believe I wasted my time watching it lol
And Vegeta was totally a side character. Why
It’s still better than Super Goku not knowing what a kiss is
@@itsokayguys Vegeta's character development in GT is probably the most underrated thing in the show.
@@gubsy3730 yes I totally agree with you. They also do a partiality about the main villains only get killed by goku. I think that's not fair.
That's Goku for you.. Hrs always been like that.
The first few episodes didn’t make me like the show(as a kid) but when ssj4 came i fell in love with it
shit was trashhhh
I agree. I didn't really like baby as a villain and didn't really get invested in GT since I was in elementary school and focused on that but when the part when ssj4 came up, I actually took the time to watch it. Ssj4 was such a cool transformation and ssj4 gogeta was even cooler
Edit: I actually didn't mind the while shadow dragon arc as a whole
SSj4 made GT better, but then it got trash again during the Super 17 arc and ended with a slightly better but ultimately mid arc (shadow dragons). GT is a bad show, but its not THAT bad. I don't get why it has so much hate. It's not my favorite dragon ball series but dragon ball is dragon ball, more content is never bad.

It has a huge fanbase in south america to this day and as you said most of it was because of the dub team(they brought back a lot of the original voice actors) so the nostalgia still played a huge role in the success of it.

I want ss4 to be canon so bad. I always thought of it as like the “original” super saiyan of legend.
SAME :D
Super Saiyan 4 made a ton of sense directly based off ozar (giant ape) lore from the saiyan race.
You hit the nail on both of the series
GT is slow and boring sometimes while Super has had me making rants and struggle to understand how someone could let that slide
one day I'll get around to watching super, but until I do GT remains the worst of DB content. Though the series really peaked with Frieza. I go back and forth over Cell or Buu saga's being worse, and which I prefer. I didn't watch GT until years later and struggled to get to the end of Super 17.

Dragonball GT was great. Pan and Goku was a great team up. King Tuffle was a badass and had a genuine reason to hate Saiyans. Most Dragonball series have boring parts in it. I watched GT when I was a child, but as a Brazilian I can say that our dub made GT timeless, specially with the opening...
Just a correction, Goku didn't became weak. actually, he was even stronger than Z.
Same thing happened in the Spanish speaking part of America, the dub was exceptional
Bah. You missed out on the American music, settling for the Japanese dub.
The problem with GT was it was a follow-up to Z, a masterpiece and eternal classic. Nothing could've followed that up. Also if DB Super had come out immediately after Z it would've gotten criticized so much harder than GT did

He probably didn’t put a lot of effort on it
So, I recently actually went through watching all of the dragon ball series from the beginning, and it should be noted that I had next to 0 knowledge of dragon ball up until last year when I started this (to the point where my wife was annoyed with my dumb questions, like "is goku also a prince?" since she has watched everything back in the day haha).
Like... FFS... Why does he have to be so dumb... or GT where just nothing except score and fatting would make it through his head. )
I do agree on one thing though, the idea of the dragonballs gathering too much negative energy, and that whole final arc was actually really original and interesting and I thought it had merritt and created a nice plot device to show why the dragon balls aren't the solution to everything and can't just be used so nonchalantly to wish for bullcrap like they often are...
DB GT:
Plus
- 3 good fights,
- one really interesting villian,
- SSJ4,
- music,
Minus
- can be boring at times,
- no SSJ for Pan,
- characters lack proper development
- final arcs can make no sense,
DB Super
Plus
- SSJ God, and UI for Goku,
- Vegeta has a really proper development,
- Golden Form for Frieza (he got a new form after 25 years),
- 3 really awsome story arcs,
- animation and fight scenes are the best in DB history,
- future trunks arc is really awsome,
- well done multiverse
Minus
- first two arcs cover up the two movies that were released prior to the anime,
- in early stages animation can turn out people,
- Gohan got nerfed
- power scaling
Bonus. Did you watch out the awsome DBS Super Broly movie?
Final verdict
DB Super is a better sequel to DB Z anime, then DB GT.
I believe the designs for GT were really good too
The overuse of dragon balls is an idea that can fit in well with OG DB as well, too bad it wasn't well executed in GT but it's a good idea nonetheless.

It's _tangible._
It's that 'world of cardboard' that Superman talks about, and it applies interesting limitations that make fights _more_ compelling. Letting loose and nuking the map is easy; responsibility and restraint are the next level.
This is a really great and interesting perspective!

Bruh Moment, Vegeta do want to surpass Goku, but the fact that Goku trains more harder then Vegeta is mind-blowing, Vegeta doesn't wanna waste lots of time to turn into ssj4, so Vegeta took the easy route by using a machine of bloods-wave
think it was cuz Vegeta had no tail or cuz the earths moon got destroyed in Dagonball. Or both.
@@Leoking8y I would agree, if not for so facts:
And besides we know Vegeta does go an easy route for power like:
• creating the artifishal moon in his first battle against Kakarot,

• selling his soul to Bobidy and becoming a Majin just to be on the same level as ssj2 Kakarot

Goku is a man, making him into a child was a bad idea. GT got better after his transformation gave him a mans body again.
All that said, GT has the best ending in the entire franchise.
most people prefer to ignore it but lemme tell you
it is BELOVED in south america
my dad and uncles from both sides of my family including younger member of this generation will inmediately recognize the intro and the most memorable saiyan form alongside SSJ1,2,3 is the fourth form
if you go to a mexican streetmarket selling bootleg toy the most common ones are recolors of the SSJ4 form
You deserve a like for the Panty and Stocking scenes alone
So if you remove those last 2-3 episodes then it would’ve made sense but beats me why it was like that
That's the best way to view gt and super .
@@BruhMoment-xl5yx there are 4 different main timelines which branch after DBZ. Let me explain
1. The Manga of DBS takes place after the DBZ Manga
2. The Anime of DBS takes place after the DBZ anime
3. The Non-canon Super movies which include BOG, RF and the Broly 4D movie take place after the movies
Side bit of trivia, the voice actor for Baby in Funimation is Mike McFarland, who also voices Master Roshi and Yajirobe :)
So many actors do vastly different characters but I found that one particularly cool
Ascending past SSJ3
SSJ4 : About halfway(?) into the show and is based on going Super Saiyan during the long since forgotten and un-needed Oozaru transformation and mastering control over it which condenses and controls its power back into a humanoid state, This transformation being this way also links up with one of the main villains being that his home got crushed by the Saiyan's (Aka the raiders that went into Oozaru and fucked up planets and required Oozaru to even achieve Super Saiyan back then if ever which makes sense considering rage)
SSG : At the very start of the show and is based on "6 good people of Saiyan blood" pooling their energy into one user to suddenly create God Ki in their body to save them against a ridiculously powerful enemy.
Villains
I prefer the "Explore the Universe and its potential inhabitants" approach and focusing essentially on utilizing things that were pre-established in ways that feel at least some kind of smart and interesting instead of using pre-established things like Frieza and just straight up completely recycling them. I think Super does this a lot in many ways and I also think this is one of the main differences between how the two roll.
Look at Omega Shenron and his "siblings". My man is literally a being of condensed greed that got created when our heroes
A. Revived all of namek that got messed by Frieza so that they could live again AND to bring ANOTHER dragon back so that they got a freebie wish.
and
B. Abused the SHIT out of the Dragon Balls more and more repeatedly in a way that they weren't designed for as time passed.
It uses the PRE-ESTABLISHED Dragon Balls which are technically the most important thing in the entire franchise and uses them in a way that's sort of fun and cheeky if you get me, Like a moment where you go "Ooooh I see what you did there..." Still kind of comes out of left field but you actually seem to have put some thought into this idea and it works thematically as well in some ways (4th star dragon ball being part of the whole re-tracing steps thing GT has going on)
But when Super uses already treaded ground it just feels like a COMPLETE rehash most of the time even down to recycled scenes to try weaponizing nostalgia as opposed to working with the past events and objects to create new ones.
DBGT is trying hard to be original, yet struggles to not be a Dragon Ball series
DBS is trying hard to be a Dragon Series, yet struggles to not look like an original series (that feels far away from Dragon Ball series)
You've got a point there
That's why imo Super and GT are equally as bad
GT tries hard to modify the world building, yet still trapped and somewhat consistent in previous Dragon Ball series world building and unable to separate itself from Z
Super tries hard to keep consistent with previous Dragon Ball series world building, yet struggle to not modify the world building, ended up making Super feels like an alternate story that stray away from Z
DBGT is a 1 long run just to show 1 non-canon doodle art made by Toriyama and called it SSJ4, and showing new characters that actually fit to be placed in DB/Z character designs
DBS is a 1 long run to show you plenty of recolored forms (to red, blue, white, black-white, gold, black, pink, etc, you name it) and introduction to characters that doesn't really looks like they could fit in DB/Z character designs
Imagine Jiren in Z, can you picture what if such character in Z? Feels out of place, right?
What about Baby? Baby actually could fit in Z? Fit nicely, especially around Frieza-Cell Saga
As someone who likes pretty much all dragon ball content. Super is Better than GT for 75% of it.
@@nocappin9596: I'd say Rildo was actually the first time Goku had to "try". That fight pushed him enough to actually use SS2.
@@EmeralBookwise wait I swear he used only ss1
@@nocappin9596: admittedly it's been a long time since I watched GT and so my memory could be playing tricks on me, but I thought Goku had that distinctive sparking aura during the more intense moment of their fight.
Great video! Deserves way more views.
You know when people like things just for the sake of liking them even if they are objectively bad? This is a good example.
Better saga ideas
Cooler transformation
Good charcter development with everyone especially Goku an Vegeta.
For me DB ended on GT 100 years later with Pan as Grandma... the sad thing about this anime was only because there where mire Ki Blast than fighting.
I swear if you say “cyan” one more time I’m gonna do a chiaotzu😂
Everyone knows GT stood up for Great Trash. Correct your mistake
In the youtuber totally not marks’ video on the subject he essentially said what rings true to me hear:
Which he prefers if purely dependent on what you specifically look for and prefer in dragonball.
And this goes for GT and SB (hence why i brought it up)
But on the topic of GT, i tend to see it a similar way to how i see Teen titans go or Sonic boom (the game AND the show)
Both series were also never really created with the intent to be what it was before. And both series began to find their strength when they indulged in themselves rather than trying to replicate something we already knew.
While both series are also starting to gain a cult following of “____ wasn’t as bad as we initially thought” EXACTLY like GT
While some of the reasons people hated all 3 shows were and still are definitely, it’s undeniable that part of the larger fan scopes harshness towards them in the first place came from (like you said) a lack of nostalgia and attachment to them due to not growing up with them, expectations and judging them on a scale of how much they’re like their predecessor, and just downright they age old fear of whats new and unknown
And lastly, while I do prefer the dubs and can admit that modern funimation dubs are way better than they were back in their hayday, you are 100% right on how the more choppy script changes and voice directions that would NEVER fly today, played a hand in peoples perception of Z.
Which is kind of a big deal when thats the entire purpose of a shows soundtrack 💀
Its honestly a shame really, with a redub and maybe a mix of the best of the english and mostly jp ost people wouldve grown on it a little more.
Some people may read it in think i’m trying to say “because its for kids/to sell toys, that means we should settle for less or that kids don’t deserve actual quality content”
And like???
For me it all comes down to "If it's bad than it's bad, and if it's good than it's good", and I just believe that, in my opinion, Super is bad, and that GT is... decent.
"it also tells me that it was never 100% trying to be DB to begin with"
No, even if poorly executed in term of storytelling, the story itself 100% loyal and want to be DB.
What a paragraph
IMO, the baby saga kinda resemble the trope of red ribbon combined with buu elements, and kinda connected with freeza just because its about the planet Vegeta, its like all the bug bad villain of all the dragon ball franchise combined
I dont give a shit who anyone thinks about GT. SSJ4 is most legendary transformation ever.

However, in my opinion (and you may have a different opinion on this, which is fine), DBZ was just as full of writing inconsistencies and "convenient" plot devices.
A few examples would be:
- Goku is a saiyan, he was supposed to just be a "monkey boy" inspired by Journey to the West.
In super, less things were at stake, even Freiza's return felt lackluster.
Love the music you put on the video. I think I could recognize Crash Bandicoot and Jak and Daxter soundtrack there xD
The only dragon ball series that's actually about the dragon balls lmao
I watched and enjoyed the subtitled GT. The interactions between Baby, Vegeta, and Trunks were hilarious. I thought the show deconstructed Z well and was almost a satire in ways.
Without GT there wouldnt be any inspiration to what DBS is today. You can see so many references.
100%, Toyotaro (One of the writers for Dragon ball super) made a fan manga after the events of GT, and Toriyama just thought his art looked cool.
The only redeeeming qualitied to DBS was the Zamasu arc, though it had some terrible things too.
GT isnt a follow up its a different universe story altogether
it is a follow up lol
the way he is pronouncing saiyans is sending me!!!
Super drops the ball hard mostly and ss4 is superior to ssg but never forget that trunks had to go super saiyan just to lift a couple of bricks :'(
Imagine valuing power scaling over good story telling.
Super is really good from the goku black arc onwards though
@@gubsy3730 bro the top is cool most of the goku black arc is good but the ending is off. But dbs is definitely better than GT in most ways
I agree. And I actually really, really enjoyed the doomy gloomy atmosphere of GT way more.
The one off episodes when they go to a planet find a Dragon Ball then leave are all underrated each being fun or interesting
Majority of the Baby arc was fantastic 17 was disappointing but had like 3-5 good moments and I think Dragon Ball Heros did the Shadow Dragons better making them events other then villain of the week
GT isn't the black sheep of the franchise, it's that one live action movie that shall not be named.
factual statement right here
When i first watched it and finished it as a kid, I honestly wished it was longer. I loved the fact that we got to see them all older... with new adventures and enemy's. The transformations were also on point. Super was the biggest disappointment to me, I can't believe I wasted my time watching it lol
That’s how i know you don’t REALLY watch dragon ball.. bro really said saiian its saiyan bro (say-yen)
Signs?... What signs?
