Justa little comment about the moon gag in anime, it's said that in Japan, there's a children tale that says that there are rabbits making mochi on the moon, due to it habing a surface where it's possible to see the shilouette of a rabbit making mochi. That's why there so many rabbits and moon references, like Super Mario Odyssey or that Wii game from the Rabbids.

Great video man. Dragonball is my absolute favorite piece of media ever and as someone who has been watching/reading this franchise for most of my life it’s always interesting seeing someone’s first experience with this series.

Yeah feels like alot of people underappreciate it since it was most of us' first anime we ever saw. But it's still real good.
That just anime snobs and Elites who just like to hate on shows that are popular. At one point these same people were dissing DBZ to promote OG DB! This just crap they do to make themselves feel superior to others.
Becaseu I remember back in the early 2000 Naruto was really popular until it went main stream (Viz start distributing in the US) then all of a sudden the fans started to really hate on it and nitpick every story arc. The reason why is because the secret anime/manga that they loved was no longer a secret and no longer special. JUst ignore the anime Elitist
Another great video as always. You have a way of speaking that's able to keep me interested in a topic I wouldn't have cared about otherwise.
It also helped me realize just how little of Dragon Ball I've actually experienced. When I was a kid, all I watched of dragon ball was some of the frieza arc and so I ended up forming my opinions on the series based on that, plus watching Dragon Ball Super whilst it was airing. It wasn't until 2018 that I decided to read the manga and realized just how little I had known about the series. I remember being really surprised that the series started with Goku as a kid as I'd always known him as an adult. It also surprised me just how fun the manga was to read, despite being almost 35 years old at the time. If I'm remembering correctly, I got up to the beginning of the Red Ribbon Army saga before I stopped reading. Thanks to this video, I've decided to give the Dragon Ball manga another shot and I'm gonna try to get to the end of the child Goku section before your next video releases. Really can't wait!

I'm pretty sure the DQ enemy you're thinking of is the base Skeleton enemies (DQVIII 3D models show them better). It just lacks the Alien head the Red Ribbon robot has.

People who say the story and characters in dragon ball aren’t that good are probably those who’ve only seen or heard of Super. OG dragon ball and DBZ where incredibly well written for the most part with that only slightly shaky part being the Buu Saga.
I have very mixed feelings about Super but ironically Beerus and Whis became my favorite characters in the franchise at lightning speed, to my own surprise. Toriyama no doubt had a talent at making up ridiculously charming characters. No matter how many people were in charge of DB post-manga/DBZ and what they did with it, wherever Toriyama's touch was, that's where you could feel the franchise's pulse. I also adored the whole concept and reveal of Migatte no Gokui. Those days were the most hype I saw for DB in Latin America since the nineties.
What a great video, I was actually curious about dragon ball now that I'm older. Maybe the writing isn't giga big brain but it def established tropes for its genre in manga and anime, the animated series has some shots that you see in many Shonen these days. Sick vid brah

I hope you read Slam Dunk someday, if you haven't. It was the king of JUMP along with DB sales-wise before One Piece took over. Editors have rookie mangaka study both and it really shows.
But back to Toriyama, I can tell you'd enjoy Dr. Slump.
Love the fact the you actually took the time to sit down and analyze the story for what it is instead of meat riding everyone else who doesn't enjoy dbz especially old db

And when I watched it for real when I was maybe 17, I liked it more than expected, especially DB.

Toriyama's genius shines brightest in Dr Slump. I laugh out loud at every single page. It so funny, so charming. Toriyama is a gag manga authour par excellence. He became a action guy by accident, yet he revolutionized that field too.
His death count back then was sky high.... guy was killing them like flies....

ngl, i think the og dragonball before the saiyans aged better minus maybe some inappriorate jokes, it's just more fun, but also has some badass fights, the tone in Z became too monotone the more it progressed. saiyan saga was still fine, maybe frieza too, but there was just less and less fun and more and more of the same pretty one dimensional fights

Dragon Ball is just one of those shows where people tend to either be batshit insane about or think it's a snooze fest (Which I mostly blame on poor pacing in the og Z anime), it's my first Anime and manga so I can't really say with complete certainty that I'm not at least partially blinded by nostalgia but I think it's a very competently written and charming with some great action and some of the character writing from Kid Krillin to Vegeta are like actual 10/10 bangers.
Fr. I think the original story's writing is much more intelligent than people give it credit for, which is something I hope to show

25:10 That's what I hated about DBZ. He didn't even need to drink that water, since he's a super sayan, who gets twice as strong whenever he almost dies. All of DB seems unneccessary now.
For me the series is great up until Piccolo Daimao. After that it just starts to get more and more boring to me. My own full thoughts on everything though are in a review video I did last year.
"Dragon Ball" is one of the most wildly influential manga in history, to the point where pretty much any shounen mangaka will reference it and draw upon Toriyama's flow between paneling in their own work by using the natural movement of the manga reader's eye. But if you don't like slapstick, Toriyama's particular brand of potty humor, sense of power scaling, AND his penchant for jus outright forgetting / dismissing aspects of his canon until much later...then yeah, it's a story that may not be for everyone.
FWIW, I adore "Dragon Ball," warts and all lol. If you want a precursor to energy wave style attacks, you'd probably have to go back to something like "Space Battleship Yamato" from the 1970s with the Wave Motion Gun, assuming you were staying strictly in anime and not "Dragon Ball's" influences from antiquity.
As a point of critique, I gotta say - you spend so much time simply walking through the plot that a lot of analysis opportunity is just blown over, or you're not really saying anything new. If this is supposed to get people to read the manga, it feels like a plot summary that one could glean by reading Wikipedia.
The “puff puff” is actually pronounced “pafu pafu.” In Japan it’s onomatopoeia for someone putting their face between someone elses breasts.

Say what you will about his other talents but in his prime Toriyama was one of best pannelers of manga ever. Toyotaro's art is getting pretty good in the modern super manga, and he has some good ideas, but his panneling is mid.

Lol imagine thinking that? First of all of Dragonball is just one story so trying to separate Z and “OG” DB as a story is stupid, the anime just did it for marketing. But also even if you want to split it up. Z did better with characters, story arcs, pretty much everything. You’re right about the rest being garbage tho and that’s because it’s just people trying to milk it. Toriyama truly ended the story after Z.

I think this video is needed, Hearing people repeat the same criticism over and over again like "oh it's just guys powering up and yelling" makes me think they either haven't watched, or they've only seen Z.
It's pretty common for people to start with Z, this definitely damages peoples perception of the series.
It's the same as if you started Naruto at Shippuden, or the MCU at Infinity war, or Kingdom hearts at 3

Dragon Ball just aged poorly as more competent writers took what Dragon Ball did, and did it better. Toriyama set a bar and others exceeded it so much more in the aspect of battle shonen.
