Actual description: I asked Vevor to send me one of their Mini Lathes so I could test it and demonstrated it to you all. I got my first lathe several years ago and although I don't use it every day, I use it several times a year, and is an extremely handy tool to have around the shop.
In this video, Dustin makes a part, and I send him home with this Vevor lathe.
Dude, I'm so happy with the lathe. I finally had to some to play with it a couple days ago, i just got a quick change tool holder, so i needed to try that. Turned down the tip of my flywheel puller that i had to shorten the tip on, and turned down the face of a large nut i cut in half for another project. It works perfectly so far. I'm so happy to finally have one of these in my garage. Thank you so much for the "crash course" ha ha!
I spent the afternoon looking up 3D printable accessories for it, and now I'm going to put a couple DRO's on it, plus so many other things.
Thanks again!
Good to hear. The QCTP is a game changer. Did you get extra tool holders ? You can never have enough, haha.
Like I say. You won't use it every day, but you will find all sorts of great uses for it. A DRO is a great idea ! ... I've been meaning to do that with my lathe for about 10 years, haha.
You're welcome !
Strangest weather I've ever seen. You still have snow. The ground has been clear here for a few weeks. Weather has been warm in the daytime mostly, one or two cold days. The next 5 day highs are: 61, 73, 64, 58, 58. We've had a lot of sun also. Weird for February.
It has been fairly nice here for the past week or so.. Above freezing, and then in the past few days it has gotten colder and we got a little snow. The first half of next week is supposed to be quite cold here, and then by the end of the week back above freezing, haha.
👍 Inspired to get small lathe. Around 2000 I smashed spark plug, found correct size rubber hose to use as a holding sleeve and pushed in the dial and happily done my old bike's contact ignition adjustment :)
A small lathe is a really nice tool to have around the shop... You won't use it every day, but you will find a lot of uses for it.
I already have a gauge holder made from an old spark plug. I got really lucky ! Just removed the ceramic and the gauge fit perfectly. It is actually snug enough that I don't even need a set screw.
This video was to teach Dustin how to thread and to demonstrate threading on a mini lathe, haha.... So no spark plugs were used.
@@loweredexpectations4927 you guys created very good bit for toolbox - no doubt. I just remembered my days :) got dial and didn't know what how.. Just did with what was around. I even think that first try was with some rubber hose pushed in plug hole lol then got smarter.
And def need lathe. So many times need all these things.. Press, 3d printer, lathe etc
I recently purchased a ZR micro lathe from China(aliexpress). Obviously very different to this lathe but still very inspiring video non the less. I too have some slight modifications that I'd like to do to mine. Awesome video series Mate. Thanks you
Thanks for the comment. I hope you enjoy your lathe... they are great fun and handy to have around.
I sure enjoyed this post today.
Thanks !!
@@loweredexpectations4927 How do I join in on the giveaway ?
You and Dustin much be pretty close for him to trust you to ream and thread his thingy for the first time.
Yeah... some people just click, and work well together.

That would be a nice lathe to play with.
🤙
They are a lot of fun, and you end up finding a surprising number of uses for them. For a few years I was obsessed with my lathe, but for the past few years it has just been a really handy tool that sits in the corner most of the time, but is very much appreciated, when I need it.
I want to win an air suit. Already have a 5" chuck lathe. Don't have to change gears out, does standard and metric threads. Just wish I knew how to use that function 😂. One day, maybe, I'll find time to study on it and play with it.
LOL... "I want to win an air suit" ...
Sweet... Not having to physically swap out gears is nice. Do you have an older american lathe ?
Yep. It's an old Southbend in great shape. I upgraded the old tool holder for about quick change. I bought the books for it and a complete overhaul kit, played with it a bit, got busy on other things and haven't touched it in a few years.
@@tjhouston4916 Right on. A beautiful lathe. The quick change tool holder is a must, haha.
I miss having access to a lathe. Sigh. It would be nice to have one at our observatory-restoration project, but, not this year :(
I feel you "not this year" .... If I wasn't given this, I wouldn't have been able to afford it. I've got to get a new mortgage on my house (going through a separation) , and my payments are going to increase a little over 10X what they were.
Sorry to hear about the separation. Been there, done that. Sucked.
@@patchvonbraun Thanks. Mine is probably going a lot more smoothly than normal.
Very good video. Can you make imperial threads?
Thanks. Yes, it makes imperial threads as well.
Hi Joel,
I bet your friend was really happy to get that lathe....
Where did you get your lathe, and what kind of pricing have you found for a used one as capable as yours? Any suggestions on where you look for them? The vevor one is a bit too small for me, and I can't afford anything larger "new".
I am keeping my eye out for a deal on a used lathe and a mill. I know deals are out there -- it's just a waiting game to find them. With the 3 phase converter/controllers getting as cheap as they are now, it makes sense for me to look for older 3 phase machines and run them using those 3phase converter/controllers.
Philip
Yeah, I'm sure he will really enjoy it.
I ended up getting REALLY lucky with my lathe. Some collage kids had got it for an electric car project for a class they were doing, and they left it with their mom when the moved out... It was basically brand new and she sold it to me for $1500... if I remember correctly.
I had purchased one before that for around $900 that was in rough shape... I fixed it up, cleaned it up and sold it for $1200... You really have to do a lot of research, watch a lot of videos and get to know small lathes... before you go shopping.
If you can find an old American one, you may end up with a much better lathe with a transmission, instead of change gears... that makes threading much easier. Keep an eye out on Craigslist or other buyer / seller sites... Every now and then you will find an incredible deal, if you are patient.
All of this being said. The lathe itself (if you don't get one with tooling) is only going to be half of the cost... be prepared to invest that much again in tools... the plus side is that you can usually invest a few hundred at a time on tooking.
Nice demonstration of the mini lathe :D seems to be very handy really. Great video and great work as always 👍
Edit: what would be the max size of the working piece to fit in there?
They are very handy to have, and can teach you a lot about using machine tools in general. Thanks for the comment !
Why not just drill out an old spark plug? Could it be too simple maybe?
Yeah. I already have one made from an old spark plug. I just removed the ceramic and the gauge fit perfectly.
Two problems with this. 1. is that there isn't much room to install a set screw, although I could use a M3 or something... but mainly 2. This video was to teach Dustin how to thread and to demonstrate threading on a mini lathe, haha.
The spark plug bottom that I have is actually snug enough that I don't even need a set screw. I get really lucky and it works perfectly.
Will that thing turn stainless? I remember trying to turn stainless on a lathe like that only smaller and more crappy. It worked really bad, but we also probably had crap cutting tools.
I suspect that this would also be crappy, haha. My guess is that, it would take a while to figure out what tools to use, and what technique. On a bigger, more rigid machine you generally use a totally different set of tools and techniques.
That being said... if you are working with a stainless, or anything else, that work hardens, that's almost impossible with a small lathe.
When can we win an ice fishing hut?
Haha... I'll keep you posted !
Do you use Drill Doctor to sharpen your bits?
I do my sharpening by hand... I'm not very good at it, and most of the time I make them too aggressive... they work well for one or two holes and then I have to do them again, haha.
I can get the bigger bits pretty close, but forget it with the smaller ones. I've had a
Drill Doctor probably 15 years, never could get it to sharpen a bit. Didn't learn how to use it properly until I watched a Drill Doctor video on line last year, then out of desperation actually sat down and read the book. When you get the hang of it, it's really a fantastic machine. I have the 750x. I think it goes up to 3/4".
@@tjhouston4916 Haha... turns out that, sometimes reading the book is a good idea, eh.
