- In our opinion, ball handles are the best type of locking lever. In this video, we introduce two possible methods of machining ball handles. This can be done entirely on a metal working lathe - a milling machine is not required for this project.

Some very fine machining there. would it be feasible to construct a lense blank- being both the positive and negative for plastic injection- or is this only possible on a mill?

I have the kit for a Quorn downstairs myself. The one thing I found that makes these a pain to use is that as it stands there is no way to easily reorient it the handles to lock at a specific angle. The quick way of modifying that is to cut away more of the hemisphere to change the axial position of the start of the thread, or stick a washer under this so that it clamps down at the right angle. I've been thinking if someone is prone to elaboracy a little more like I am, it should be possible to make the threaded portion an insert, and have it selectively lock somehow at different angles. I had considered actually making the tapered shaft hollow, threading the small end to take a smaller ball cap that threads on, and putting a rod through the middle that is threaded and lockable on the insert, so you just unscrew the little ball head, screw down a shaft that runs through to lock the main tightening insert in the axial position you want, then screw the little ball back on and you can't even tell the whole thing is adjustable from the outside. You could make all the ball handles this way and they would be individually adjustable for whatever position you wanted 😁 I've never seen anyone take this approach for a ball handle but I'm certain it would work but it would be more work of course.
I like the idea. I’ve come to the conclusion that there is no possible clocking for the umpteen ball handles on a Quorn that doesn’t end up with them interfering with each other for some operations. Adjustable without facing/milling/washers would be great. You’re essentially reinventing Kipp handles.

Is that a Quorn you're working on? I've been looking for a T&C grinder but was intimidated by the 150+hr build duration

Hey Guy. Just found your channel. I have the baby brother of the Super 7, the ML7 and also took delivery of a crusty old Dore Westbury 2 weeks ago ! However It needed a drive belt ! I ordered the same as what was fitted 10mm x 1165 but,having now received and fitted it, find it too tight ! Could you confirm what bets are fitted to your Dore Westburys and possibly, if you know, what would be the standard, if any, on these machines. I'm thinking that perhaps the motor is not standard and overhangs more than the original and that the belt size may be original and consequently too tight. Is there a method for calculating belt size ? If anyone can help please let me know. Thanks.

But how did you make the collets to hold the spheres? Are they actually spherical inside or is it just an internal groove that the balls sit in?
The collet bore is a straight bore but fairly critical as to size and depth. A book called The Model Engineers Workshop Manual written by George Thomas provides the details about ball handle proportions, machining and the collets.

Just imagine how actually useful it would be to give link to the ball cutting fixture source, or give us some views of it, or post some drawings. Obviously we can't use a tool we cannot acquire, so all your 'METHOD TEACHING" is just self-indulgence. Thumbs down.
