Everyone should know you can change the "volume" of the shot on this machine. Hold down the button for as long as you want the shot to be, and the machine will remember for next time. Remember to only start timing after the pre-infusion after the machine waits for a second.
The shot should pull for about 25-30 seconds. If you can't pull a good tasting shot in this time, change your grind.
Another tip for this machine is not to tamp too hard. Compress the coffee and then stop. No need to put all your strength into it.
Thank you very much.
Can I change the pre infusion time? With the instructions it is explained only how long the pouring will be
@@giuseppemengoli No you can’t
Hi your video is very useful but with a second coffee grinder SMEG CGF01 and 30 available position my results are not the best could you help me?
@@ArtyHome the coffee is coming out my bottomless portafilter too fast. Do I need to make a finer grind and tamp harder?
Good video. Background noise is unbearable.
I think you have tamped it too hard in the normal portafilter so it gave drops not a continous flow
I don't want to alarm you, but it sounds like Darth Vader is breathing over your shoulder this whole time.
I don't know how people are fitting 18g into these baskets on the bottomless PF. I am struggling to get 16g.
Finer grind.. and some sorts of cofee are heavier..
@@saneksheva80 nice info my man, god bless
Are you sure you don’t just have a smaller basket? IMS do a range of sizes, I have the 15-18g but there was a smaller and a bigger basket available as well
@@owenedgson7302 I've just paused the video where he turns the PF on it's side and you may be right. There are no markings on the my basket but the depth is 24mm.
Completely over extracted the second shot. Probably ground too fine or it's over tamped. I have this machine, and the shots from the stock portafilter are far better than displayed in this video.
in my experience the shots from stock portafilter are very mediocre. the rubber seal is elevated at one point for easier removal and that makes it really hard to achieve proper tamp. when I purchased bottomless portafilter my coffee became much better
@@gordanbabic8028 I agree with you. The rubber seal of single-shot cup is even seen when you tamp. It breaks the flatness of the coffee surface.
That is why I always use double-shot cup of stock portafilter.

Why all those ocmpanies doesnt make it from the factory bottomless?
Why did you use 14g (ratio 1: 2.4) for the normal portafilter and 18g (ratio 1: 1.9) for the bottomless one and not the same coffee quantity with beans coarser/finer? Thank you for share the video.
Normal portafilter can not hold much coffee. I have also found 14g is about the maximum. 15g or more and the puck may touch the spout on the group head.
But I agree would be interested to see 14g from the bottomless filter.
soo..WHICH TASTES BETTER? IN WHAT ASPECT DOES IT TASTE DIFFERENT?
We can clearly see a difference 👍
He used the same grind for both filters. Pressurized filters are used for pre ground coffee which is typically less fine. The second shot was over extracted.
About the timer: If we assume that you go for a ratio of 1:2+ and extraction time should be around 25-30 sec then you can say that both the portafilters done their job at 30sec. They doubled the amount you gave them. Eventho if u had Coarser coffe more suited for espresso you could take the same result in less time maybe on the ideal more most: 25''. Well done tho, you are so close!
Background music is to high.
Do you change the grind size for the bottomless one?
Is the video beautiful - right? Although why create it with constant squelching in the background?
I don't understand why you need to boil 34g of espresso from 14g of coffee - this is also an over-extract - only bitterness. Plus, in 34 seconds - it's a wild over-extract. We do not yet take into account the fact that your timer starts when the first drops enter the cup. In fact, the first drops fall into the cup at ~ 5th second, and due to the pre-wetting mode of the Delonghi ec685 coffee maker, the first drops fall into the cup at all at 8-9 seconds.
How do you drink this bitterness.
And why are you knocking on the portafilter? This creates cracks in the condensed coffee. And why are you screwing the tempera? You just need to squeeze.
I have blocking issue with the pressurized basket when the grind is finer, have you had the same issue?
Yes, I have a similar problem, you have to gradually adjust the fineness of the grinder.
Just happened this morning

I don't see any difference. Somebody explain to me, please, what is the difference?
I would like to ask you about the De'Longhi Dedica Espresso Machine EC885. I want to buy it with a professional bottomless, non-pressurized portafilter. Is it effective to use this portafilter with the machine? I've heard that this type of small coffee maker has a higher water pressure, around 15 bars or more, which may not be suitable with a professional bottomless, non-pressurized portafilter.
Also, What degree of grind did you use for the coffee?
I've watched no less than 30 videos and it didn't click until yours. 👍
What basket size are you using? My bottom of the basket doesn’t reach till the end of the portafilter.
Buongiorno ho acquistato il filtro non pressurizzato. Malgrado abbia raddoppiato la dose di caffè e l'abbia pressata molto il risultato è un caffè per nulla cremoso?
Nice vid, congrats! What is the purpose of the piece with black rubber in the original portafilter?
its a filter. the original portafilter is a pressurised one, so it has a small hole that it uses to generate crema for the espresso, the black ring is a filter that's removable so that the small hole doesnt get blocked by the coffee grinds
So, what is the underlying reason for the difference?
Can you please tell me which filter your using on the bottomless portafilter and where did you purchased it from. I'm on my second filter and I can't and I still can't find the right filter to work. Thanks
Are you grinding the grains fine enough?
You said 18g out 34g 25sec. This 25sec count from when u press the button? or when the espresso comes out?
You can clearly see from the video that scale timer starts when coffee starts to drip
So what is the verdict??
whats a good grind level for the bottomless portafilter? fine |? too fine?
Hi Arty, very nice video! The link for the portafilter on Amazon is not working anymore. Do you have any portafilter to recommend for a Dedica?
I bought one which is supposed to fit on a Dedica (according to the seller) but it turns out slightly loose and the portafilter came off mid brewing and created a big mess! So now I have to hold on to it whenever I start brewing.

thanks for the video. please advice how do you manage to get normal extraction time with open portafilter on Dedica AND THE SAME GRIND SIZE as on pressurezed?
nomatter how I tried I always have one of the two situations with Dedica and open portafilter:
- if the grind is the same as for the pressurized - the extraction is very quick and the result is bad
around 3,8 on 1zpresso k-max
- if the grind is small enough to get visually good and slow extraction - 2,4 - the taste is that much bitter that it gets absolutely undrinkable
What the heck is the background sound? Is someone running the dishwasher?

Hello! Beginner home espresso maker with the EC685 here! Thank you for the nice video!
Have fellow users here found the distributor to be an essential tool for a good cup of espresso? I’ve actually just learnt from this video that such thing exists! ☕️

The ground coffee you are using is too coarse.
Did you have any channeling when using a bottomless portafilter? If yes, how did you solve it?
Are you using pre-ground coffee? Never had it since I am using freshly ground coffee.
@@andrescyfy570 no I use fresh beans with my Eureka Mignon Facile grinder.
@@andrescyfy570 do you mind sharing the recipe you are using?
Well, after grinding it needs some distribution by tipping on the portafilters side. Then I gently knock the porta on a hard surface with the bottom to get it settled - 3 times. I think it doesn't need rough tamping. But give it a little twist in the end. If this procedure doesn't help, maybe it's your grinder setting or coffee itself. I'm using modded original portafilter with modded original sieve. Pulling out 33g coffee out of 13g powder.

I've Dedica and this same graef you are talking about and it works perfectly enough at 10 of 30 steps. Graef give you 3 spring washer to modify fineness if it isn't enough. I'm using it without modification.
Any ideas for a good 3-4cup bottomless basket ( around 18gr )??? those from china have big holes and splatter everywhere .no crema at all . The original holds 14gr i need a bigger one , ty in advance
I bought the Neouza set from Amazon: 2 cups 16-19g, 1 cup (idk, 1 cup is too tricky), bottomless portafilter and the filter plate. Then from IMS, i bought the screen replacement (the one on the machine with the middle screw). I also got an Eureka Silenzio single dose mod grinder (single dose kit from Etsy), the lever steam knob (also from etsy) and the rancilio silvia v1/v2 steam wand replacement from Amazon. Never enough...
For comparison you should use the 2 cup button for pressurized. It makes all the differnece in the world. When pressing 1 cup button the crema is always ligher in colour than with the 2 cup button. The difference in taste is remarkable.
what do you mean? either 1 cup or 2 cup button can be adjusted in same output (34g) , or you know something difference beside the output volume?

Thank you for your nicely prepared video. May I ask if the pressure you tamped the coffee ground were the same for both brews? I have heard that there is no need to tamp the ground for pressurized basket as hard as for bottomless portafilter. Is that true?
I heard the same about tamping with the pressurised basket. They are designed for people who don't want to spend time dialling in etc.
Hello Arty. Thanks for these videos. They help me very much to understand how to make some espresso. And... Ti understand that this original portafilter is not good.
It is stuck every day. And we always loose fresh milled coffee if the hole is blocked.

So i wanted to buy a new portafikter bottomless. But unfortunately those you out into your desrciption arent available.
The prices of alternatives are from 13 to 45 Euros. So maybe you could tell em the price of YOURS to dind a similar one?
Would be really kind. Because not only me but also my wife gets angry about that.
Get an IMS portafilter basket. They're top quality, don't just buy any one from amazon. Also, make sure it's 51mm for the dedica
Where is the Bottomlessfilter from
From eBay.
Just can't get any crema out of it. Most of the time water doesn't even pass through the filter, don't matter if I use the original or the non presurized. Been practicing for weeks, still don't get satisfactory results.
I think the machine doesn't have enough power to get the water through the coffee in the filter.
Which espresso shot did you like the best?
The bottomless or the normal portafilter from dedica? :)
I also use both. Like the light taste of nolmal portafilter.
So is the 14g 34 seconds shot with portafilter fine as well?
You should not knock against the portafilter to avoid channeling.
Thank you very much. I won't do it again.
Degree of perfect grinding ??
I can not identify. The fineness depends on the hardness of the ground coffee beans.
This doesn't make sense at all, you are practically using 3 doses to make 1 coffee!!!!! I would like to see a video with this bottomless portafilter and a 1 CUP FILTER (7 grams )but no one made it... Is it normal to drink 3 Espresso coffees in one in thailand?

I like the way you organised your desk and how you shooted the scene.
Bravo!
And ground too fine.
I've got trouble with the stock pressurised portafilter: if I grind finer, it often gets totally stuck (blocked, with no flow). It happens more often on the smaller (8 gram) one. The problem is the coffee is definitely NOT too fine for espresso. I am so fed up with it that I ordered the bottomless non-pressurised portafilter to try doing things the right way.
I don't like using a single basket, I use a double and bottomless, it's easier and the coffee tastes better.
The coffee tastes better with a double dose? Obviously not an Italian.
I think that's just how pressurised baskets work. You need to grind coarser because the basket gives a lot of extra pressure.
Are you tamping too hard or have you forgotten to insert the metal filter with the rubber surround into the basket? i heard that tamping is not needed with pressurised portafilters. Mine does block sometimes if the one hole in the basket gets blocked or if i forget to insert the metal filter.
You sould grind the coffee with medium to fine size, if using pressurised portafilter..
The grind size must be changed for the pressurised one and I couldn’t see any difference between them
On the other hand you tamped it soooo hard and this will make the extraction time consuming and moreover it will taste like crap!not espresso
Agreed. The grind was too fine for the pressurized filter and created too much resistance and channeling for good extraction.
About the portafilter: A bottomless portafilter and a "normal" one should have no difference regarding the way they work. The difference is at the Delonghi default basket. Delonghi uses by default a pressurized basket that is very good to make a so-so coffe from any bean and grind so to make anyone feel a little like a barista at home. But it's definetely not good if u go for a higher quality taste with a budget machine. For this you need if you can't affort a more expensive machine then you go for the most basic upgrades: Normal basket and freshly grinded, thoroughly weighted coffe (the better quality the better the result). If u get the bottomless portafilter it will help you become better at espresso making by giving you access to watch the extraction. Nothing more. So: Non pressurized portafilter and a tamper that fits it. Scales. Quality coffe beans and grinder or freshly grinded coffe. A tip: Avoid re-freezing coffe beans. If you insist of keeping your beans in the freezer then devide them in portions and get out of the freezer what you need a night before.
What better machine would you recommend instead of this one?
@@mateuszparus I wouldn't dare suggesting a specific one. But it will be very easy for you to find the best canditates that your pocket can buy if you spend some time in youtube or other online searching. All i know is that you should basicaly aim for a "premium" type of machine as a top goal but you can always stop aiming higher if you find the one that suits your taste. Because while an espresso can be made easily, for a good or a very good extraction you will definetely need a good or a very good machine on which you will have to spend some worthy time to find the ratios to produce a result to your liking and the same time create some of your your own solid knowledge. Coz there is no sealing really. There are people with shareable knowledge about espresso making and latte art and the same time they test different machines. Worth to chcek if you decided to brew your own coffe.
How about a good grinder ??
@@aligossas9431 Yes! But a good grinder is also an expensive grinder. I use "Porlex Tall" a hand grinder that suits my budget for a quality ceramic blade grinder. That also dictates how mutch to count as a portion when i seperate the bag into smaller ones. I grind a batch for myself and keep it in a small glass container. It will last for 4,5 single shoots for sure. My wife does the same for her coffe. The cleaning is easy and we can experiment a bit with the grind size.
@@mateuszparus I think a Lelit Anna with the PID and a Eureka Mignon is a good start. If money is tight, then spend it on the grinder first and upgrade the machine several years down the line. They may seem like a lot, but think of it this way: 3 Euros (or however it is at your local coffee shop) for coffee every day adds up very fast when you start making your own coffee at home. We usually do three cappuccini and three doppio espressi per day. That's easily 30 € at a local coffee. Shop. The grinder and espresso machine pays for itself in under a year.
Where did you get the bottomless portafiler from? Is there a link to share?

@@kastierV the basket must have a bit of a lip around the edge to seal properly. Some of the cheap ones don't. Maybe you might bend the edges slightly with pliers.
I use the stock 685 portafilter with an old stock calssic (double)basket from Delonghi bar14. It fits, locks and pour pours just fine. It had outlived the old machine, and I'm glad that I kept it "just in case". I'm going to remove the plastic thingy from the holder, it does not do any good for a non-pressure basket anyway, but I'd love to seal the screw hole somehow. Even "as is", I prefer it over the original pressurized basket. Might get a botomless portafilter, eventually.
I've been thinking about that screw as well. Some kind of a nut is needed, but I might be too lazy to go find the right one lol.

@@whoami724y i'm guessing the grind size is the issue. i use a cheap blade grinder at the moment. tamping pressure should be okay. i was very surprised to see that 18-36 could be achieved for more than 20 seconds as I thought it's impossible with the Dedica due to the water pressure. but, i'm getting a proper grinder soon and will check.

@@heliu5 the grinder will definitely be the issue. i just bought the Sage Dose Control Pro and i'm very impressed by what it delivers at this price point
@@lionelpeer4097 100% support that. Great value for the money.
At 2:50 when the initial pour starts for me, it’s dark and clear and then a couple seconds later gets foamier. Why is this? Old beans?
Hello, in the video do you use the single shot basket for the original portafilter or the double shot basket? Thanks
double shot basket.
@@ArtyHome Thanks
hi, Unfortunately the bottomless portafilter is current unavailable in amazon, do you have another links for this product?..thank you
What temperature is best ? Low , medium or high temperature? Thanks for reply
High. It's also interesting that the device can't provide stable high temperature during the extraction process, there is a video about it on YT.
So if i want to sell coffee, i just add 14g.still get the same weight result just taking bit longer
