  • Releasing amidst controversy in 2016, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided was, ironically, a very divisive installment in a largely beloved series. One year after launch, the time was right to revisit this title, and examine it's merits and flaws thoroughly.

If you want to know "Why Prague" you should follow more of the European news or /r/Europe more closely. in Prague, you got already some high-tech companies, biotech companies, finance and some hard-core EU-project doubting, easter-eu fascist elements, all packaged in in a city full of alleyways and claustrophobic buildings. Yup, my man, Prague is dysfunctional, if not cyberpunk.

    • @FreelanceDev4life

Well spoken. Prague is often considered dirty by those who have never been there because it's eastern europe, which was hit hard by both ww2 and the cold war.
Building decay, poor political stability, a population seeminly unable or willing to fight for anything to completion hence its challenges in the last 70 years, civil wars, and it never has ever really been on the world stage. That's just the last 100 years.

Still though, he's right about there being so many better choices for a European location. Why couldn't they have the same dystopian type of environment in Germany, Italy or even Russia. Those places can be just as cyberpunk considering Deus Ex is in a sci-fi environment.

I'm replaying this game. And it's blowing my mind this time. I have barely touched the story and I'm almost 20 hours in. I've explored so much, it's crazy how big this game is. There is so much care put in all of the details. The environment tells a complex story that is all tied together. It's incredible and easy to miss if you don't look for it. It just went way over my head the first time and it did for almost everybody. The reviews for this game were shit. People didn't even try to scratch the surface and as a result declared it mediocre. Fuck those idiots.

I wish their would be more levels like the Bank, focusing on gameplay and Exploration. I am also happy with Prague, Also that it is so small but more filled than a normal open world game. I am happy for the sequel already

Imo MD is not a bad game whatsoever but it's definitely not the best Deus Ex game, and imo is a small step-down fro HR. HR not only had a more coherent and appealing aesthetic ( aesthetic not graphics, it's obvious even at a glance that MD is far more visually stunning than HR ) but a better story ( I played the director's cut, not the base game and THEN the missing link DLC with a huge hiatus in between. ), more player choice in how you could tackle levels, more 'all of the above' type choices ( Don't search this up until you finish HR if you like Deus Ex, basically this choice is named after an achievement you get where you are told that you only have 2 choices, but as the name implies, sleuthing around will reveal a much more pleasing choice that was never even hinted at. ), the characters were more fleshed out ( All the 'antagonists' in HR, if you had the CASIE Aug or atleast gave a shit about dialogue challenges, felt human, as they say the best villains are the ones that let you understand and even force you to empathize by showing you their method to madness, unlike the huge brute that goes I LIKE KILL KILL GOOD PEW PEW PEW . ). All in all, there are 2 lists for people interested in Deus Ex, one that ranks the games best to worst and the other that ranks the game with a new player in mind. I'll just put the latter in as the comment section is full of people that REALLY want to get into the DX universe:
      1: Human Revolution
Because it is definitely a game meant to ease newer players into the universe and gameplay loop and methods of completing mission. Also canonically, the game is the first. NO I DO NOT CONSIDER THE FALL A DEUS EX GAME.
      2:Mankind Divided
Good game, but not an amazing DX game. However it's here so that you can wrap up Jensen's storyline. Much more polish in terms of looks and certain gameplay features, but as I've already said, it's lost some things that made HR great.
      3:Deus Ex
The first game in the series and definitely the best when it comes to story and player choices. Now the reason why people SHOULD play this last if they are new to the franchise is simply because... alot has aged like milk. It is absolutely fine to me but I am a person that grew up with games like the first Quake so I am adept at adapting to the older looks and feels of older games. However to the new players the game will look like shit, gameplay will also be shit and finally the AI would stick a gun through it's asshole instead of trying to take you down. Pros are definitely the player choices and story, but also the main protagonist... he may not have Jensen's voice, but he is definitely hardcore. But there is hope Bratan. There are 2 mods for this game. There is GMDX and Deus Ex Revision Mod. The former is what old time players will prefer, as it really fixes alot of the gameplay issues and AI. However for people that are concerned with Graphics, GMDX does alot but not as much as Revision. Sadly Where GMDX excels, Revision falters badly. It does not make the game worse than the original, but simply put, Revision is just a beautiful paintjob on honda civic without tires, whereas GMDX is a Chevrolet but a really basic white as it's paint.
We don't talk about The Fall and Invisible Wars about here... How can we ? know one can simply speak of what does not simply exist.

This game is sure not perfect but it definitely is my favorite game of this generation, it is so underrated. Its atmosphere was so captivating and its secondary missions were so amazing and well written. This game really touched my gamer heart because this is what I would love to see happening more often in games, to have complex and detailed handcrafted open-ended maps with a great level design and awesome environmental narration (especially Prague which may be my favorite map ever across all games) instead of repetitive and boring huge open-worlds that most of big studios are doing these days. Sadly not only Square Enix didn't let enough time to the developers to complete and polish the game, but they fucked up its marketing campaign with the microtransactions thing and by showing stupid action trailers that didn't show what the game really was about.
This game is for me the true definition of maturity in videogames, this should be the main way to help a lot of videogames to really get more mature: through putting depth in gameplay. I'm not criticizing The Last Of Us 2 from a quality point of view, you have the right to like it. But in my opinion games like this with a casual bland gameplay don't help the videogame industry to get more mature, it only helps it to get closer to the movie industry, which is a bad thing and a huge waste of potential.
Other than that I was already familiar with Deus Ex before playing the game so I directly played it the right way, like an immersive-sim game. And I was so sad and annoyed to see all these negative reviews and all these empty forums for such a great game because that meant that we wouldn't see this kind of game and the immersive sim genre being back before a long time. And unfortunately time proved me right because Square Enix putted away Deus Ex in a drawer and forced Eidos Montréal to work on the Avengers game, which turned out to be a disaster. But even if Deus Ex comes back someday, I wonder if it will still be as good because a lot of the original creators of Human Revolution and Mankind Divided have left the Eidos Montréal studio these last years, which makes me even more sad...

With Deus Ex, Thief and Hitman, I really thought Square would be taking these franchises to greatness (again). What ended up happening, was that they pushed for cheap and simple designs for console players, and shoved in all manner of micro payments and obvious content cutting to sell less game with same money. Now each of these once magnificent game series has effectively crashed and burned.
Considering the scale of this overarching fuck up, one can only wonder at the idiocy. They could have simply put the correct amount of time and effort, find the right people with the motivation for the title in question. And use the licenses to produce games that both sell well, and strengthen the franchise for the future. They threw all that away, and rather tried to force feed us some DLC.
I guess even Human Revolution just didn't sell enough. All the critical praise in the world doesn't keep the investors happy. So Square saw a forced profit margin increase as the only way forward, and managed to destroy 3 of some of the most legendary single player franchises PC ever had.

The way they show how technology is overtaking this old medieval city and how those two elements contrast I found to be really great. While it’s only one hub world it’s vastly more dense and layered then the ones we got in Human Revolution. The atmosphere as well to me was amazing in all 3 phases Prague goes through. Night time Prague was my favorite point in the game and gave me the same feelings I got with the Human Revolution despite its more realistic lighting and less Gold and Black palette. While in terms of scope/size. HR felt much bigger considering you get to explore much larger areas, especially when compared to MD. However, MD for me ups the game by having each building (nearly) have something meaningful. MD is much more packed than HR and made exploration much more necessary to see the picture. While HR was more mission focused and bad guy chasing. MD side missions felt much more personal and intimate. Furthermore it felt there were more interwoven into the environment and mood of the situation. HR felt like drinking cold Americano, a long thirst quelching experiences, while MD more like several espressos, a punch where ever you go. To me in MD side missions felt like the the main story you have to solve to understand the main story a bit more. Like finding the shop owner in Golem city if you didn't help him as well as the underground theater actress. While HR felt much more fulfilling in terms of story, MD left me with more yearning for next installment.

Because of that, there has been a very long history of various meetings between leaders around the world, peace summits, treaty and pact signings, and other foundational diplomatic events have taken place in Prague dating back to the Crusades era and all the way up to the Nuclear Summit that the non-proliferation countries attend

For any fans of the newer Deus Ex games looking to get into the original, I HIGHLY recommend the GMDX mod. It's an overhaul of the game that enhances gameplay fluidity, graphical fidelity, and overall polish while staying true to the game's original vision. You'll fined vastly retooled AI, subtle environmental detail, rebalanced skills and augmentations, reworked weapon behavior, new mechanics, expanded difficulty modes and options, brand new effects, and bugfixing. It's an extremely solid package, preserving what made Deus Ex so great while updating the game for new and old players alike.
Anyway, I appreciate to see some more discussion about Mankind Divided, so thanks for the video. I'll be sad if the franchise ends here, since there was a lot to like about the last two games, and as you said the design principles underlying Deus Ex are sorely needed in our homogenized, linear, cinematic setpiece-driven game industry.

I've played every Deus Ex game except for invisible war and it is one of the most criminally underrated franchises. Sure MD was not as good as HR but I really enjoyed the interface and weapon changes as well as side missions, it's still a damn good game. This series is really important to play imo because its storylines and threats are so real to life and something that could easily happen in the next couple decades. Tech companies ruling over the masses and blurring the line between what is human and when do we go too far is plausible.

For reference, I never was a fan of the earlier MGS games but I heard 5 is completely different in gameplay and tone. I loved the early Splinter Cell games and thought Dishonored 1 was amazing. Human Revolution felt clunky by comparison but was fairly enjoyable overall, although the takedown moves were distracting as they were non interactive cutscenes, also there was little variation in them.

There is actually only one instance of forced combat in the game, and that is the boss fight with Machenko and even that can be skipped if you have his kill switch. When your in the Garm facility DO NOT contact Miller, he will get in touch with his superiors who are Illuminati and it will trigger an alarm part way through the mission no matter what.
Also for anyone going for the Foxiest of Hounds achievement (No Alarms set off) DO NOT complete the side mission involving Eliza Cassan's AI, when she helps you avoid the police after the curfew and blows up a squad car it will always trigger an Alarm which will void that achievement, regardless if you yourself alert any of the police. There maybe a way to avoid this taking an alternative route to the Red Light District but I never stumbled upon it.
The same thing happens when you convince that female police officer take care of the guy trying to scam people into buying fake ID's an alarm will trigger when they have there little firefight and even if your not involved it will void the achievement.

This is the most diverse FPS stealth game in terms of gameplay. Real-time weapon modding. Various combat augs you can use to suit your playstyle. Insane amount of diverse mission paths. This game is better than HR in every way except for its story. It's not a bad story. It's just not as engaging as HR, and that's due to the fact that the ending is cut short as this was intended to be part of a trilogy. A trilogy that may never be finished. In terms of stealth gameplay, it's the best in the series.

The only thing i did not enjoy about this game was the ending. A bit anti-climactic because of it’s set-up for a sequel. But the rest of the game is a damn near-perfect Deus Ex game, and it sucks as a fan that the franchise has been shelved. It feels like HR was an idea to build on what Deus Ex started, and was a learning experience for the team, MD was like a “okay, we listened to the criticism, and here’s some development on what was good” and the sequel to this would be the best in the franchise, especially as it would segue into the original, story-wise.
Hopefully we will one day see a conclusion to Jensen’s arc...

Really like this review. I miss Deus Ex man. Came here cause I thought of the series due to thd Cyberpunk hype lately. I really think there are 2 reasons this game failed and you named them both:
    1. The preorder and mtx bullshit
    2. The length of the game / comtent
I personally played the game and I think the fact that it was at least 3 times smaller/shorter than Human Revolution really killed it for me. Otherwise I really liked it.

5:08 - If all cyberpunk games will be set in a gritty rainy metropolis, it will become very boring very quickly + is exploring the rest of the world and not just Detroit\LA ( your typical cyberpunk cities) is such a bad thing? MD really expanded the world and lore of Deus Ex, i loved how all the sick technology blended in with Prague' architecture and you actually get to roam around Prague at night, this is were the game becomes "The Third Man" of cyberpunk. In other words a very original turn for a cyberpunk genre

Well then you clearly didn't play the game at release because i could barely hold a locked 60fps at high settings with a GTX1060. Maybe the performance is better now but at release it was garbage. From what i've heard about DX:MD dlc's they're meant to be really good.
