Deus Ex is one of the most beloved and acclaimed games of all time. Let's take a look at where its blend of action, adventure, and RPG elements came from and this storied franchise came to be. Trenchcoat and sunglasses required.

This is probably the most in-depth retrospective I've seen of the Deus Ex series. The research was stellar and contained many details I didn't know about. Great work!
you should make a video on deus ex too
Will you ever make a video on Deus Ex? And a history about Adam Jensen?
I low Key love you
I can already predict the title.
Deus Ex: 17 Years Later...
...really? I thought it was pretty pedestrian, done by someone who hasn't played a whole heap of each game like its fans have.
I love the original Deus Ex game. My only regret is never playing it when it first got released back in 2000. But I'm playing it now and I am about to beat it soon. It truly is one of the greatest games ever created.
Just beat it last week and man...it was a great game.
Beat it for the first time one year ago, after looking for recommendations of science fiction games, love it and i'm amazed for the gameplay and big world considering the era, and the most important for me, the storyline is awesome.
Respect for doing this and not whining about the graphics!
There is one thing about first deus ex that you didn't mention in video - music! Soundtrack of first deus ex was simply amazing. One of rare game soundtrack that I listened at home, even today.
OneCoinArcade yes, I’m always listening to the soundtrack, at least daily. Since I played the game
Indeed, Michael McCann did a stellar job for the ones made by Eidos Montreal as well. Incredible work.
True, but the soundtracks of Human Revolution and Mankind Divided are equally amazing.
@@NicheGames meh
I recommend the _Mothership Loudspeakerz Remix_ augmentation for the DX soundtrack.
"Paul's getting lonely waiting on that dock"
"A detail like that was revolutionary."
Considering how you rarely see detail like that, it still is.
I want JC back for Deus Ex
Me too, i'm tired of Jensen and MD for me is going to the wrong direction.
PlotlinePlus He is flat for a reason. To put out reactions in the game, not the devs idea of how the player react.
Not to mention that a great game with superior story and writing (deus ex) hold up better then the 'non flat' Jensen...who is also flat
JC was born during the events of MD, we could see Paul tho, he was born in 2018
JC has a full character arc. We've met him during his first mission and we last saw him, when he led humanity into a peaceful utopia. I suppose we could investigate the conspiracies around his and his brother's creation, maybe get a glimpse of a young JC from far away, but other than that, there is little to add to his history.
Make deus ex great again, JC for pressident.
Rumor says, that every time you mention Deus Ex on a forum, someone re-installs it.
You are thinking of Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines.
The question is, why was it ever uninstalled?
Why contain it? Let it simmer in the steam library let it spill from HDD to SSD. in the end they'll be begging us to delete it!

In spite of the loose ends and shorter main story, I feel mankind divided is worthy of praise. It improves in a few ways but mostly its just more of the same, which is good.
im glad they didn't CODifed it
but i think it would be interesting with a multiplayer
First Deus Ex had multiplayer dont judge me
Well, the story in Mankind Divided isn't that bad, actually it is quite interesting... if one look carefully, as most things aren't told directly in the game, just suggested (In contrast with Deus Ex 1 which tell things quite directly).
Depends. IMHO the PC bullsh*t in Mankind Divided is very annoying and exaggerated but many important details about the story and the game's world (and even some side quests) are well hidden thoughout the maps. And they are the ones which make the story interesting. If one plays without exploring, the storyline is very average compared to the previous games.
@@NicheGames What do you mean by PC bullshit? The fact that in The game augs are treated like shit?
Who the hell uninstalls Deus ex in the first place?
i never did, changing hard drives is closest thing to a uninstall.
To install newer deus ex (also saving space)
those who got their hardware stolen or gone broke?
I Only Uninstall so I can reinstall it again.
Gamepad players as it only supports mouse and keyboard
Jeez, the Deus Ex Menu Theme give me always chills. good song, love that song. great.
Legend has it that even till this day, JC is STILL expecting a show.
that is just toilet humor
I'll *never* reinstall Deus Ex, because I've never uninstalled it. I still have my original save games.
thats awsome :)
Funny and believable, but that means you never had to reinstall Windows since then? Which NOT at all believable.

If you answer "no", then, RESPECT.
And, yeah I got the idea when reading the comment for the first time.
True games remain in your heart anyways, installed forever, no matter the hard drive or system.
I still play Max Payne 1, to this day.
Installed it on every PC I owned.
I still have all my saves from the day I bought the game.
How is that even possible? :D
@@ericoshimatta515 I always copy my old data to new drives. None have died before they were replaced. Plus, I never detonate my drones near them. ;-)
Impressive.
You got a single fact to back that up?
Yuh see how this boy does rell lie
I'm glad that someone else recognizes that Invisible War wasn't THAT bad. Sure, it had plenty of flaws, but it's biggest "flaw" was being Deus Ex's sequal, otherwise it is a pretty good game.
jamabenf loved invisible war
Its painfully small hub areas, the protagonist and handling of small things like ammo and biomods were enough to turn people off. It has other issues, most of them technical, but I honestly think its just for those reasons that people don't like it.
I recently got to finish it, and I honestly felt that even on its own it was a mediocre. A lot of elements felt mishandled with a story that while wasn't absolutely awful was pretty lackluster and not very engaging (had good elements, though. I like majority of stuff related to JC outside of him having an army of talking aliens which was dumb, and NG Resonance who you meet multiple times in the game was always a joy to talk to). That's on top of the small levels and the technical issues (which are semi fixed with The Visible Upgrade mod), and the mechanics being dumbed down.
Did you guys play this game back in the days with pc from that era? Or did you play on new rigs from today?
Because back then, it was a technical mess ^^ Gosh it was unplayable, even with my decent configuration.
I remember waiting for Deus Ex2, loving the first one. What a disappointment it was in the end.
A bit like this year with Cyberpunk ^^
You feel let down, big time ^^
2:21 you missed a fairly huge side-note with this mention here. Yes, Ultima Underworld was developed before Wolfenstein 3D.
Thing is, John Carmack of Id Software saw an early demo of Ultima Underworld, and it was this viewing that inspired him to create Wolfenstein 3D.
For those that don't know, Wolfenstein 3D was the initial seed that lead to the ENTIRE first-person shooter genre.
After recently finishing Mankind Divided I'm certainly intrigued with how they'll conclude the Jensen storyline. With Human Revolution showing the end of an era, and Mankind Divided giving us a look into the early years of the dystopia we later see in the first game, Jensen's story is edging much closer to JC and Paul's. Hell Mankind Divided takes place the very year JC was born. If Jensen's story is going to end as a trilogy I'd think one big way to do it is have his final game take place over a period of 20 something years from 2030 to 2050 or 2052, with Jensen's story ending around where JC's begins. I'm sort of imagining something like the Burial At Sea expansion to BioShock Infinite. You get to help set the events of the "first story" in motion, but ultimately the story one character sets in motion has to be finished by the main character of the aforementioned "first story."
I never uninstalled it in the first place.
...and now I have like six versions of Deus Ex on my harddrive
Great retrospective. Very informative, yet spoilerfree.
Good job!
Deus Ex IS THE ONLY GAME I TRULY LOVE.... AND I'M NOW 26. THE MUSIC IS BEAST THE WHOLE WORLD.... THE COUNTLESS WAYS 2 PLAY AND WIN.... BEST GAME EVER .... WISH THE REMAKES WERE LIKE THIS ... THERE NOT EVEN CLOSE 2 THIS MASTER PIECE
Isometric Aquariums what remakes?
Seems like you have problems with writing like a normal human being.
@@iansantiago7545 I think he means the prequel/reboot series.
@@peppermillers8361 oh, I mean the first one of those was almost perfect, the second one.... Simply not
@@iansantiago7545 I haven't played MD, but the only issue I heard about it is that it was cut too short in terms of plot (because honestly, making a game like the original DX isn't easy). I'll see when I get to it.
20:04 It actually IS Alex Denton. In the first Deus Ex game, if you take the time to explore Area 51, you'll find a room with cloning tanks, one of them is still occupied by a clone in progress and the name plate reads A. Denton. You can see it also in the intro but can't see the name, could be JC, since Simmons and Bob Page are mentioning that the next unit is almost ready. The empty tanks are were JC and Paul Denton were created. I think there's also a fourth empty tank without a name.
There is an empty tank, one named "Wade Walker" which is Simons's clone, and one named "Nick Pausback" which is page's clone. What I want to know is are these plans/prototypes for the eventual clones? Or models depicting how the clones would look? Because JC and Paul had childhoods, they didn't just pop out grown men.
It's always fun to end up in a conversation where someone goes "What do you mean you Can save Paul?"
Or that you can kill Navarre.
That person is me. What the hell? I though there was no saving him.
@@davidgusquiloor2665 Yes. The trick is to not run or fight when the MIB show up to arrest you both.
An excellent history of Deus Ex, i am old enough to remember all the games shown and they were truly ground breaking, great memories. Well done.
Can we all agree Deus Ex is the godfather of modern games?
Deus Ex isn't the godfather of 'all modern games' anymore than Doom is. Both of those games tried new things and set standards.. were very successful, yeah. Nobody is denying that. But to act like they're the only examples of this being done, or to act like they were the first instances of new innovative things being tried is.. dishonest to be frank.
@nope dooms a totally different game though
Half life anybody? Don’t forget
unfortunately not, they keep getting more and more primitive
:55 OHHHH that music! I'll be right back, I need to go reinstall Deus Ex.
Can't believe i actually sat down and watched the whole half hour!
It's only half an hour, shitty student films can last longer.
This is a fantastic overview man. Solid narration at a relaxed tempo, honest acknowledgement of the flaws of the legendary original, a lot of interesting trivia and smooth editing. Well done.
I just finished Deus Ex today after buying it during the winter sale. I love it so much, definitely one of my favorite game ever!
The Deus Ex series is fantastic. Even DX2 was not all that bad. I have played all 4 games at least 2 times through. Deus Ex 1 I have played over half a dozen times. Just because of the story.
I hated Deus Ex 2. Disappointing, maybe enhanced by the disappointment from performance of Geforce FX5200 :D
@@bobzeepl it was a bit of a performance whore
I genuinely enjoyed this. You seem to have a decent knack for the game documentary genre and you should keep it up.
I look forward to your next "history of" video.
Damn I played the entire Invisible War, and I didn't remember any of the main story until now.
Very impressive documentary on the roots of the franchise. Clearly a lot of time and effort put into the writing, editing and sourcing of all the footage/photos etc. I'm a big Deus Ex fan and this contained a lot of information I didn't know. Subscribed!
This was beautiful, thanks for putting the time to do this videos years ago. DeusEx was the first game I paid money for, it's just wonderful in many ways. Playing for hours finding tunnels, chatting with NPCs and learning hidden details.
I love Mankind Divided, I don't care what bullshit people throw at it. It is one of the best games of all time.
The interesting narrative, unique characters, realistic graphics, amazing detail, complex level design, fluid gameplay mechanics. It's all there!
If you have not played Mankind Divided, you don't know what you're missing.
I'm on my third play through now and I still discover new things I never knew about. The feeling of discovering a new side quest or finding an access card to the palisade is just an amazing sense of immersion. I really hope they are working on a new Deus Ex game.
Ludo. I watched your Myst from beginning and end and then did a search for my other fav of the 90's Deus Ex and low and behold you have one! Bonus!
Speaking as an ardent fan and veteran of the original: the third title - 'Human Revolution' - was a fantastic one. Square Enix put right everything Invisible War got wrong, and concentrated on what made the original great, but also improved upon them. It even featured melee (choice of lethal or non-lethal) cutscenes and wall-cover during gunfights. 'Mankind Divided' was also a good outing - although sadly I experienced technical issues and it crashed at a certain point every time. It grieved me, but I had to stop and uninstall in favour of other games that did work.
I love these game history series you do. Please keep 'em coming!
I loved your video man! I'm a sucker for video game history. This is well put together and I'm looking forward to the next one! Subscribed!
Crazy how a majority of my favorite games have all been worked on by various members of the same team
The Dishonored games also are "0451 games", also among my favorites.
Amazing work went into this. You did very well.
Excellent video! I'm so happy to have played the games mentioned starting with Underworld. The first System Shock is still my dad's favorite game. And Human Revolution and Mankind Divided are some of my favorite games!
This was a wonderful video. Keep up the high quality work.
Subbed, liked, and I've got notifications for all your new videos! Well done dude.
same!
I really likd the idea of playing as JC's father and him being some ind of early nano augmentation experiment, what a shame that never happened.

Well, the Jensen Saga will end sooner or later, so one day we might get a game starring Blake Denton...
RaidenBlackSamurai Lolz
The Jensen saga was supposed to end on the sequel for Mankind Divided but due to how poorly it sold I don't even know if there's plans for a sequel anymore.
Hopefully we are able to get such game, either that or a remake of DX I with all the discarded ideas (mainly the AI on the space station and the respective missions) as well as an enhanced engine/A.I.
愛乞う イクトAikou
I'm fully aware of the Mankind Divided controversy, but remember that before we got Human Revolution, there were 4 (maybe even more) failed attempts to bring back the series after the failure of Invisible War.
If Deus Ex survived that, I can assure you that the Jensen Saga will return one day.
Regarding the idea of a DX1 Remake, as much as I love the original game, I agree that a Remake/Reinterpretation (like the Resident Evil 2 Remake) with Improved Gameplay and restored discarded content would be a great idea.
RaidenBlackSamurai Lolz
I did not remember that, the only failed attempt I remembered was "Call of Deus Ex" also known as "Project Snow-blind" but that kind of gives me hope.
Well most of the cut content/ideas were dropped due to both technology limitations and time constraints so a proper remake would be wonderful. Emphasis on proper because most remakes are just made for the sake of sales so they end up looking a bit more like expansions with a considerably lower difficulty in comparison to the original game.
that music... even after all these years, it still gives me the chills :)
Brilliant video. Great effort, looking forward to more!
Man your taste in music is awesome.
Literally every song you've used in the background is a favorite of mine from all of those games.
EVEN THE FRIGGIN DAIKATANA SONG YOU USED!!! Like what the hell hahaha.
Also, awesome video overall :)
i'm so excited to watch this channel blow up. as of right now, 1,045 subs. please keep the content coming :)
Great video. Big fan of these more in-depth breakdowns on games and history of games/franchises/genres. Would like to see 1080p, though.
Man the original Deus Ex will always be one of my all time favorites. I revisit every 3-5 years.
I still get that feeling of nostalgia when I first played it. I was still playing N64. One of my dads work buddies sent home this game, Unreal Tournament 2000, Unreal, and some Alien RPG that I can’t remember (never got far in it because it confused me). Needless to say I was blown away. Unreal Tournament was a blast, Unreal freaked me out at the time, but Deus Ex was life changing lol.
I am a simple man: I see Deux Ex I press like
The moment JC starts betraying UNATCO this games goes to another level when I played....like an addiction
This is great thank you for letting me know more about this amazing game.
HOW THE FUCK DO YOU ONLY HAVE 67 SUBS THIS IS AN OUTRAGE! fantastic video man! ima share the fuck outta this
really great channel. love doc style videos like this!
Excellent! Thank you. I'm a massive fan of the original but didn't know about the developer's previous projects. Very interesting and well narrated.
I dont really play games much these days, but I doubt some game will ever beat JC Deenton masterpiece and be better, no matter GBs or K resolutions.
Just bought Deus Ex off GOG for $0.35 and I'm hooked, again. Very few games have that effect on me.
Great video, thanks.
Just what i wanted before starting HR, thanks man

Great video, brings me back.
Great video, really enjoyed it
Well it’s a shame that Deus Ex is put on hold again after Mankind Divided :(
I truly Hope that Cyberpunk2077 will revive hopes for DX franchise
Ethereal cyberpunk will likely flop due to over hype (as seen with all overhyped games) and prove to everyone that deus ex franchise (1, human revolution and mankind divided) is the true champion of the genre

The dark Camelot story pitch was good, wish they were able to continue it.
excellent review from our beloved games!
Excellent video, Thank you very much!
oh yeah. smashed like, great video.
Fantastic work!
What HR missed was a bit of layer of conspiracy. And random bits of philosophy. And Side Mission are track, I don't know why, but I like them untracked...
I love Morpheus in the original, and some of the conversation. Never got that touched by any conversation in MD and HR. I also miss melee combat that didn't take you out of combat for a few seconds.
Reinstalled DX1, btw... Yes, the meme real...
VictorMistral it's not a meme, it's natural law.
I also loved Morpheus and IBMs Watson reminded me a lot of "him". Kinda creepy if you think about this game having been released almost 20 years ago.
Agree with your points.
The takedowns in the prequels take away the precision needed to stalk your enemy and actually invest in melee. I just wait for my single battery to charge back up and it’s all packaged and delivered straight to your door.
@@xx4rch4xx I don't know, low tech in DX1 was pretty unbalanced if you get that one aug that increases the damage of your melee weapons on top of the dragon tooth sword. I definitely won't mind if they bring back melee, but they have to balance it out more.
Project Snowblind was one of my first video games. I played it a lot on the PS2. I highly recommend it!
This is really well put together. You deserve more attention.
Thank you for the in dept review
When I finished playing Deus Ex back in 2001 i was like "Wow, since now all games will be like that, freedom, non-linearity, total immersion, endless choices, I can't wait for the games in future!" I couldn't have been more wrong :(
Echoing what others have said, this is very well done!
I never knew about the history of Deus Ex until just now. The first ever Deus Ex I've played was Deus Ex Mankind Divided and it is really fun to play and made me curious when I saw a little cut scene of Adam when he got really hurt before he has augmentations
Don't you mean Human Revolution, since this is when Adam gets his augmentations.
This is probably the best series I've seen
this is actually a really good video, thanks so much for putting so much time into this and making it, it must have taken ages, and i really hope you get more views!
p.s sub!
second or third time watching this and it still feels fresh to watch.

My name is Amadeus and if you can pronounce that, you can pronounce deus ex
De = pronounced as day minus the Y
+ us = pronounced "ooze" + Ex
dae+ooze+ex
@@FeelingShred
Haha that's the perfect way of pronouncing it the wrong way. Deus is a Latin word. It's not pronounced using the weird English sounds. To make it simple say it as if you were reading it in Spanish, or like Olive says: like one would pronounce Amadeus which actually comes from that word meaning one that loves god or something like that I think

@@theguardian8317 True. Also I forgot I made this comment at all.
very good video homie keep it up
I cannot boast that I bought the game immediately upon release. Nor can I claim that I still have my original saves from first playthrough - I've had three or four computers ever since first purchasing Deus Ex in 2001. I can, however, testify that the moment I started playing was one of the best moments of my life.
I was so fortunate to have played the first one when it first came out. It was, sadly, the peak of gaming for me, and subsequent games simply did not reach the same Heights.
I remember I had to buy the game in a physical store but couldn't play straight away because I had to leave the country for a month. I couldn't take the game with me because laptops we're not widespread back then and cheap. So instead I took the manual with me and read it page to page until there are many tiny white cracks on the pages.
The last two songs were perfectly chosen !
Amazing thanks
Awesome vid.
I've been thinking about playing it again for a while but now that you said Pauls getting lonely waiting on that dock I have to now.

Very interesting story line that you had researched. Thank you for making this video.
Do you have this research somewhere in writing? Maybe, a large blog post?
Such an amazing nightcore feel to it. Even the music was reminiscent of retro synth wave
Great video for a great game!
The original is still my all-time favorite game. It came with my first computer and was the best surprise ever once I started playing it.
