From what I’ve always been told, put the barrel on the receiver, drop a dowel rod down the barrel till it rests on the bolt. Mark the dowel at the end of the barrel. Measure the dowel rod. If it’s 18”, you’re good. I would always go longer.
Nice vid, showed me how to quickly do mine........very easy. Showed it to the gunsmith at the range and he thought it was a factory job. I drank 1 extra beer for good measure lol
Amazon sent me Glock sights and I ordered Sig sights. I contacted Amazon and they sent me new correct sights and told me to keep the Glock sights. Great video
I did the same to my 88, but I went with a collapsible AR type stock and a railed forgrip to mount a light on. Best $169 I ever spent. Btw I used a bandsaw to cut the barrel, and had less time invested in squaring up the barrel. 👍
Bandit I thought he was going to have some Beers, but then I saw him drinking (Coca Cola)I’m sorry I meant Coors, and even worse Coors Light.I guess we know where Texans stand on drinking soft drinks(sorry)I meant BEER.
My grandpa gave me his Hercules model 10 that he got for 20$ it’s a really nice gun. I’ve already redone the stock and it’s the first day I have owned it. One downside is it has a permanently choked 30 inch barrel. I’m considering chopping it to a 26 inch barrel
Nice work. I prefer the Velcro sidesaddle, leaves screws accessible and no chance of binding up action with over tightened screws or corrosion between plate and receiver.
Did mine with a hack saw a few years back. And if I remember correctly I left at 19 1/2 or so. Didn’t trust my maths. Cleaned it up with some filing. But sometimes when I look at it it might be slightly uneven. I’m hoping that doesn’t mess with anything.
Academy sells the Mossberg 88 with BOTH long (28”) and short (18”) barrels for only $20 more than just the standard 28” barrel model. You can have both and it’s manufactured so it’s a certified 18” barrel.
That is correct. I'd rather spent $20 and have both barrels. But I'm sure next video will be a 2 beer and duct tape video non how to re-attach it to go duck hunting.
There are great cheap guns and great cheap mods. This combo is like peanut butter and jelly.. If it were me, I would shorten the stock, new butt plate, call it awesome.
I made the equivalent to a maverick super shorty when I was in my teens. I shortened the mag tube and barrel. Then I shaped and drilled a piece of leaf spring and a nut welded in the tube to hold it with the original bolt. It only held 3 in the mag plus one in the chamber. Surprisingly it still held a half way decent pattern. I turned the rest of the barrel into nunchucks. A few years after that I found out that was a federal crime to have so I put a normal barrel and tube on it and junked the short ones.
Just by the Field Combo Maverick. It comes with the 28" and a 18" barrel. So you don't have to butcher a perfectly good barrel. But looks like he's a Harley dude. So this video makes sense.
One thing that should be pointed out for anyone wanting to mod their shotgun in such a way is that federal law states the barrel needs to be at least 18 inches, but like the salesmen say, "That's not all folks!" The gun can't be shorter than 26 inches overall. If you have a collapsible or folding stock it is measured with the stock fully extended so folded/collapsed it can be shorter than 26 inches. There are a lot of laws that do not get enforced but this is one that the if you get caught with it (since you can tell it has been sawed) you are probably going to jail. A lot of police think it is illegal to saw one off to any length since it doesn't match what it says on the barrel. Not true of course but that gets em looking and measuring and googling and... Just make sure you gun is at least 26 inches long. If it is 25.9 inches overall then you might as well have a 4 inch barrel because it is illegal. Not getting into things like the Mossberg Shockwave since that was never built as a long gun (it was factory built as a pistol and that matters) and even it is 26.5.
And this isn't to be construed as anti modding, just staying legal for those who care. I am all about taking cheap fudd guns and modding them into something cool (and worth more money)
Good gawd. I just bought a Maverick 88 Combo. It comes with the 18' barrel and a 28" inch vent rib barrel. The vent rib barrel is damn sexy looking on the gun. Now,I have a home defense weapon and a skeet or trap gun as well.
18" is the legal limit, most gun manufactures make the 18.5" the standard production length so there is room to repair the end if need be. The ATF page will give you the legal limits,18" barrel minimal and overall length of weapon is 26".
That grip will fit, just have to put in some elbow grease. The plastic compound will conform to the right shape with enough pressure. Mine was the exact same when I put on the pistol grip. It looked like it was meant for a different gun but in the end it fit nicely! Cheers!
Update. The amazon seller did indeed send me the grip for an 870. They made it right and sent me the right one and I got to keep the alternate. Will make a new video when I install the new one.
Another reason criminals avoid home invasions of houses with beer cartons in the trash in America! Even if they don't shoot you with a shotgun they will probably bust your face up with a partially consumed beer!
Hey man, a cut off wheel on a Skil-saw works A LOT better than a hand held cut-off tool. There's more control and a straighter cut without a lot off cut over slag inside the barrel. Also, you can make the cut slower because of the control that the Skil-Saw provides. A slower cut is a cleaner cut. Thnx for the background bikes.
You can buy the maverick 88 with an18.5 inch barrel. You can also pay 30$ more and get both the 18 and 26”. I’ve got the 18.5. I wish I would have paid a little more and gotten the extra barrel. The 26” barrel alone is 150$.
look around, i found a 28in barrel about a month ago for 80 bucks. it was used but in good shape no rust and the inner was as clean as the other one i had.
I do not hunt, I have thought of sawing down an old Winchester pump for years. I have eleven other pump shotguns, but the Winchester has the slickest action. I ordered a grinder, since this not a job for a Dremel.
When the atf measures a shotgun barrel length they do it with the barrel on and with the bolt forward, they then either run a rod or measuring tape down the barrel until it hits the bolt face...
you can buy the grip for the Mossberg shockwave ..also comes fit for rem 870 around $30 on Amazon a mig will fix the rib up nice after cutting and put a bead on it
Not sure if the laws have changed but back in 1971, a person I know sawed off his shotgun barrel and was charged by the FEDS for manufacturing firearms without a license, plus, having a barrel length of less than 18 1/2 inches: given 5 years in a fed pen.
Larry Potterfield of Midway USA says measure from bolt face, which locks inside your bREECH Measurement. Insert rod down barrel to bolt face, mark and measure barrel from there. Good luck..to lenghtn one too short you have to weld.. spot weld.. a extension
Not gonna lie I like the original stock anyways, more versatile never know you might end up outside needing to take a longer shot, way more accurate than the pistol grip. But whatever, that is personal preference. Cool video thanks for posting!
I've done the 18.5" and pistol grip on my 500, looks badass but I'm not that accurate with it. So back went the stock on it. I did buy an 88 with the 20" just to get a couple more rounds in the mag.
@Christopher Marlowe The 500 has the tang safety, so with a pistol grip you have to move your hand to reach the top of the receiver. That one I have a synthetic conventional stock. The 88 uses a safety in front of the trigger guard, so my pistol grip stock works fine with that, just use the index finger to engage/disengage.

Beers Bikes and Guns. Youd get along with me and my friends just fine. I found one of these at a gun shop and i was thinking of buying it and chopping it down .Do you thinks its possible to do this with a hacksaw or will that turn it into a 6 beer job?
@Onigiri Otaku that's not true only law you have to worry about here is keeping it at least 18". And you don't need a license for that either it just has to be registered with the ATF
Under Federal Law Barell must be minimum 18in AND Overall Length minimum 26in . To go shorter with either you would need to file a Form 1 with ATF , with $200 , wait 3 to 9 months to recieve Tax Stamp before making the modifications .
Looks better with 18 inch barrel. I have a 20 and a 12 gauge maverick 88 and i put the pistol grip on the 20 and i definitely wouldn't on the 12. But i think i know what im gonna be doing this weekend.
Personally I cut my 870 down to 18.25 to deal with the vent rib ,no one makes a left handed tatical barrel ,I made my mark put a hose clamp around barrel as a reference, cut it with a right angle grinder filed and used Emery cloth worked fine
Probably a stupid question but if I decide to cut my barrel down to 18.5 inches does it matter that I don’t have a choke on the barrel? Can I shoot it without a choke and have no issues?

Hey brother put a silencer on that bad boy that’s why I want to do with mine but not sure how to with my barrel that short to the pump do you have any idea ?
Damn brother, you have a steady hand. The 2nd cut looked damn good after you touched it up. I believe for me, I would have to put my cut-off blade on a bench grinder, that is bolted to a sturdy workbench to get the straightest possible cut. I'm not sure if my hand is steady enough for a hand held grinder. I have several shotguns I'm thinking about cutting down, my Mossberg Maverick 88 being one of 'em. Btw, I'm also in TEXAS.
Hey man! I just wanted to let you know that if you have the raptor grip it is technically a Non-NFA firearm, mean ing the barrel can be more or less as short as the tube, if you want to do so.
I heard that even if a firearm meets the requirements (barrel length, overall length, etc) if you turn a pistol into a shoulder fired rifle or turn a long gun into a pistol you still run into legal problems. It has to do with how the firearm “started its life”. The feds never lose their legal fights, so it’s not worth taking a chance.
I think that is ONLY correct if the shotgun was manufactured by Mossberg as a "special category" pistol. I don't know if this is accurate, but I saw it in a video from Mossberg that I can no longer find.
Wrong, and I'm going to correct you so other people don't follow what you're saying and find themselves in trouble. Once that receiver came from Mossberg attached to a shoulder stock, it was, and it will always be, a shotgun. Stop talking about things you don't know, because there are people dumb enough to believe you.
I heard the cut has to be perfectly straight and even right down to a fraction of a mm or it affects the accuracy. How do you measure its flat and even, With a level?
Bro, barrel length is measured from the bolt head of the closed bolt. Close the action, stick the tape measure in to the barrel until it stops at the bolt, thats the length.
Just a point of interest. ...if anyone in Canada does that, the shotgun immediately becomes a prohibited firearm under Canadian law. You can buy a shorty shotgun or a 28 inch barrel shotgun, but if you saw off the barrel, you're suddenly a criminal. Go figure! 😎
Not necessarily, Canadian Prohibited firearms include: "Rifles and shotguns that have been altered by sawing or other means so that their barrel length is less than 457 mm(17.9921 inches) OR their overall length is less than 660 mm (25.9843 inches)" -www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca
I believe this is a felony in the USA as well, not sure why youd saw it down unless it was a hot (stolen) gun or you are some kind of felon already and just dont give a f. If you legitimately own a gun why butcher it.
PRETTY "DECENT SERVICE"?? You've had the part approx. six weeks, learned it doesn't fit, make them aware of that and in less than one hour THEY are telling you to send it back that they are sending you the correct part FREE!? WHAT DO THEY HAFTA DO TO HAVE EXCELLENT SERVICE? just saying....
*Actually, That particular PDX-1 Load is One Slug UNDER Three Buckshot. That amounts to a modern version of the "Civil War Buck and Ball Load". The Buckshot are just under the crimp and do leave the barrel first, Immediately followed by a full 72 Caliber Soft Lead Slug.... "if it matters." IF I CARRY the shotgun For Bear Defense, I still prefer Monoit or SteelHeader STEEL Slugs... and switch out ammo both regularly and religiously. Shotgun shells do not keep water away from the powder as well as most centerfire cartridges will.*
Are you going to video the finishing of the Mossberg 88? I also think it might be good to slightly round the end of the ventilated rib (rail) to not have the sharp points on each side and do some blueing of the raw metal (or Cerakote all the metal).
Incorrect, 16” applies only to rifle barrels. Shot guns barrels can not be less than 18” and 26” overall length otherwise they are a class two firearm and must be registered as such with the BATF along with a $200 fee.
Honest question. If I permanently pin an extreme choke (sticks approx 1.5" past barrel end) could you cut the barrel at 16.6, permanently affix the choke and satisfy the 18" requirement at 18.1"?
Great video. It was a good help. I hope you got the pistol grip sorted out. The step by step absolutely made it a breeze to make my own home defense shotgun. Subscribed . Checking out your other videos
Another way to insure you are not over the legal barrel length is to leave the barrel in place and put a wooden rod down the barrel with the breech closed. Some law enforcement may use this method to check for legal length. Just another way to measure.

From what I’ve always been told, put the barrel on the receiver, drop a dowel rod down the barrel till it rests on the bolt. Mark the dowel at the end of the barrel. Measure the dowel rod. If it’s 18”, you’re good. I would always go longer.
You are correct, and that difference might be an 8th of an inch or more. He may very well have himself in SBS here.
3 beer job, i like how you measure time

So its 3x 0,3l beer 3%

The beer count needed for the job caught me off guard and I literally laughed out loud. This is my kind of guy lol. Great video
The barrel length actually is measured with a dowel rod from the face of the bolt to the end of the barrel. Just letting you know :)
When he made that comment I was yelling at the video don't do it don't do it.
So how short do you think it really is?

I used a wood cutting miter saw on my mossy barrel there were sparks flying everywhere but it made a very clean cut pretty much

Wouldn't he need a tax stamp at that point since he's changing the classification of the firearm
Stop talking about things you don't know, because there are people dumb enough to believe you.
well done squire
I heard the cut has to be perfectly straight and even right down to a fraction of a mm or it affects the accuracy. How do you measure its flat and even, With a level?
Well.... If you are firing anything other than slug then accuracy is less of a worry than spread.
Go figure! 😎
Not necessarily,
Canadian Prohibited firearms include:
"Rifles and shotguns that have been altered by sawing or other means so that their barrel length is less than 457 mm(17.9921 inches) OR their overall length is less than 660 mm (25.9843 inches)" -www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca
same in usa
It's just another way to create revenue from fines
Cant you guys have 14 inch barrels on your shotguns
Yeah as soon as I have some time.
Is there a good reason to cut the barrel rather than buy a shorter replacement barrel?
Merica
I enjoyed watching this, man. Thanks.
Hahaha!! What's up bud. Aaron works on my bike and maybe my guns too, now... good job.
Choppin bikes choppin guns! Its all custom, Man!
Great video man. Thanks. I'm gonna do some work to my 88 in the next week or so.
Volume is king‼️
If it's over 26inc(over all length)it's fine even if the barrel is 17 or 16. But can't go lower than 16.
Incorrect, 16” applies only to rifle barrels. Shot guns barrels can not be less than 18” and 26” overall length otherwise they are a class two firearm and must be registered as such with the BATF along with a $200 fee.
Man that beer looks like a shot glass in your hand, lol. Great video!
Very helpful video thank you.
wouldn't it had just been easier to order a 18.8 inch deer barrell, I know its a lot more money to do so but then youd have 2 useful barrels.
I have a mav 88 but the barrel is the same length as the ammo tube. I guess I cant make it sawed off?
Did you have to re-blu the end of the barrel?
Coors! The champagne of beers! Awesome bro!
Another way to insure you are not over the legal barrel length is to leave the barrel in place and put a wooden rod down the barrel with the breech closed. Some law enforcement may use this method to check for legal length. Just another way to measure.
It's not another way to measure, it is the way to measure. The measurement begins at the bolt face.
Great little gun!
