  • The Mossberg Maverick 88 12 gauge shotgun. This is the security model and it might be an option for folks on a tight budget who want a good solid defense shotgun. Of course that is just my opinion, I'm not here to sell shotguns I'm here to share information, opinions and have a damn good time :)

For the average citizen that shotgun is all we need. I have older "higher end" shotguns but the maverick is the one I go to most. It is hanging on the wall in my bedroom for whatever it is called to do. We live out in the country and sometimes I need it for a coon in my chicken pin or a coyote out in the pasture. From birdshot to slugs it has never failed me.

Recently walked into the gun store with the intent to buy a Remington 870 shotgun. While I was trying to talk myself into putting the cash on the counter the salesman says to me that he had another "little shotgun" that he wants to show me. He brought out this Maverick 88. I looked it over and walked out with it. The first week I fired everything from bird shot to slugs and never had a problem with it. It is a great shotgun and it stays by my bed as my home defense weapon.

I have a Mossberg Maverick, it is 10 years old, have shot MANY ROUNDS with it, it has never failed once. It is well broken in. I have shot 3 inch and 2 3/4 Magnum with it, can put Five 2 3/4 and 2 three inchers in the magazine. I have had Moss 500's and I have a M590-A1. I cannot tell the difference in shooting it. They are $190 bucks everywhere plus transfer etc
The M590 with the Ghost rings is a fine shotgun, but I could have bought 2 Mavericks and had money left over for what the M-590 cost.
I have NEVER had a bad Mossberg product, never. BB

I have watched this video before but came upon it again and just had to comment after watching the intro. You doing the "run and gun" on your course brought a chuckle to my day. At 74 years of age I'm well past the running and gunning course. I'll set in my bedroom safely behind cover and left them come to me and my Maverick 88 12 ga. My middle son gifted me an 18.5" security barrel for it two Christmases ago and the 28" vent rib barrel resides in the corner of the gun cabinet. I live in a nice mobile home park so I have settled on #4 buckshot for my stand by load because of neighbors close by. I always enjoy your video so keep up the good work because, sure as shootin, one of these days you too won't be able to do the run and gun thing anymore!!!

Check out gunbroker.com. It’s like eBay for guns, you can bid on them. I just purchased my maverick 88 from there. Keep in mind that you will have to pay for a FFL transfer and that varies in price depending on where you go. Just search your area for FFL dealer. And you will probably have to pay shipping. So factor in your bidding price a little lower keeping shipping and FFL dealer prices in mind. I got my maverick 88 “new in box” for $145, shipping was $25 and FFL transfer was$15. So $185 all said and done. I lost quite a few bids because I kept getting outbid, but ended up winning one finally.

If ya buy this gun and then discover its light weight delivers more punch to your shoulder than you like, don’t give up yet.
Have a reputable gunsmith (or your machinist brother-in-law) port the muzzle.
Be sure to start the ports about 3” back from the muzzle so there’s still pressure after the shot cup passes the ports. This will reduce recoil but unfortunately also increases loudnboomin to the shooter.
Or.....replace the stock with a Knoxx shock absorber stock. These REALLY work.
Or.....do both of the above and you can shoot slugs all day without bruising your shoulder. 😜

OK, here goes. Remember, a lot of viewers wont go along with what I did.. Start off, the heat shield on barrel, side saddle for extra shells, Laser spot sight along with a 1000 lumen tactical light [ to blind my opponent ] . A telescopic stock and for the coup de grade, barrel lug attachment for fixed bayonet [ 12'' ] I was one of the last to train with fixed bayonet though I never had to test my training in Viet Nam. I'm trying to find the web sight for all these accessories. One stop shopping. Nice trench shotgun. I also used some very thin brass shim material to take out a lot of the slop on the slide action. They fit right at the slide bars where they attach just inside the fore-grip. just a bit of JB Weld and the little shims wedge right in place. Disassemble the gun to install, Don't sweat it, it's not that difficult to do, Ref to UA-cam videos to see how. This is an excellent home defense weapon, dependable and very reasonably priced. Back later on that web site.

I know this is an ancient video by UA-cam standards, but I just thought I'd share. Back in the 1990s, I bought a used 500A for about what you can get an 88 now. It was in pretty good shape then. I never really mastered it. But I did have fun with it for a while. Life circumstances precluded me from shooting the gun for some long while. I recently regained interest in shotguns. So I pulled it out of the closet. Rust all over it. I've had it completely apart, cleaning every bit that I can. I can tell you those aluminum alloy receivers are really good at handling neglect. The current status is I finished putting the action back together this evening. It has a five shot tube. I'm expecting an 18.5" cylinder bore barrel plus a heat shield from Mossberg on Monday. It's gonna be a non tactical tactical shotgun. The only extra stuff I'm really adding, apart from the heat shield, is a pair of sling mounts and sling. Other than that, it's gonna be running a bead sight. It was made in 1970 so it only has a single action bar and I can not upgrade the trigger to the metal one used on the 590A1. But I'm not spending much money getting it back into running order with a barrel length more suitable for defense use rather than the barrel for trap. I'll clean up that barrel too though. It's a 28" modified choke. I'll be short on capacity, but I don't think that will really matter. I prefer the tang mounted safety. But like you said, for the price the 88 sells for, a cross bolt safety can be lived with. The 88 is a solid bargain. I do kinda wish I could afford a 590A1 though. But money is tight and ammo is not cheap. So resurrecting my old 500A is my version of the 88. Cheap. Or, rather, high value.

  • @charlesmarais4582
    @charlesmarais4582 5 років тому +1

Also bought a Maverick 88 based on this review, amongst others. I live in South Africa. I paid R 7 000 (R= Rand). That's about $ US 483 at the current exchange rate. This is still a very good price for a firearm here in South Africa. The Mossberg 590A1 goes for about three times that much. Wanted one with 20" barrel but could only get the 18,5".
Now it is a case of waiting if one lives in a country under gun control. After lodging an application at the police for a licence to own this gun the wait can be anything from three months to two years before one has it in hand, until then it remains in the dealer's strongroom.
As I already have an over/under shotgun in 12 gauge I am expecting an uphill struggle for the license. Already lodged R 1000 contingency fees with lawyers to help me fight the case.
Such a privilige for folks living in countries where you pay and take your gun home with you!

I have the 20" 500 persuader. In hindsight the maverick would have been as good for less money. Only thing I like better about an 870 is much simpler shell lifter. It comes out as a unit with trigger group on the two Turkish 870 clones I have. I scratch my head a bit every time I field strip my 500, trying to put shell lifter back together.

Somebody should set up a shoot house resembling a home intruder scenario. It would be an excellent demonstration for a home defense shotgun and how to deploy it. Running around a shotgun range is fine and entertaining, but I would like to see how a shotgun would be used in the confines of a house, apartment, barn whatever.

Another feature of the Maverick 88 and the Mossberg 500 is both have user serviceable ejectors . Remington 870's ejectors are riveted in place. and have to be sent back to the factory for replacement. the 88 and the 500's are held in by a flat head machine screw. not that you'll ever need to replace them.

I know this video is 3 years old but have owned my maverick 88 for many years now . I keep it cleaned and oiled no problems! I just recently added a short 2-1/2 " long railing that goes between barrel and shell tube . On one side have a bright 4" tactic light and on the other a tactical red laser pointer . Some ask why a laser on a shotgun ? For intimidation factors . I will soon have a rear stock that folds with pistol grip. I found a cheap way of putting a pistol grip on the front factory pump grip : mag pull brand or some other good quality plastic tactical screw on rail to put on a sliding pistol grip for rifles like AR-15's

What’s appealing to me is the fact it’s a Mossberg. Mossberg would literally make a turd worth buying. It’s a company I’ve trusted since day 1 of the shotgun world. I bought this shotgun brand new WITH shells for $280 at a local quality gun shop. Mossberg Maverick is the only shotgun I would ever trust and feel good about if I HAD to pull $200 out for a gun. I wouldn’t even dare to walk in a store today with $200 expecting to buy a reliable gun, but I would dare to buy a Maverick any day. With foreign firearms flooding the market today, Mavericks seem to be getting pushed over to the side, but I’d dig through a 5 foot pile of Turkish shotguns just to find a beat up rusty Mossberg any day. I’m a big fan of the 570, 500 and 88, 100%. American branded shotgun, cheap but made to run like a cheetah, and the other reason I enjoy it is because of the dual bar ride mechanism on the pump assembly. I have owned several shotguns that only had one single bar that rides when pumping the shotgun and they felt absolutely terrible, wobbly, and just didn’t feel stable. Generally, Mossbergs have dual rides and it makes the pumping feel sturdy, straight, and comfortable. It’s one of those only shotguns that looks great with 0 accessories. And not mention the famous “racking” sound that we all love that Mossbergs make. Haven’t been able to replicate the sound elsewhere.

UA-camrs and Internet forumites keep repeating that the Maverick 88 is Mexican made. Mossberg stamps it on the receiver and with a sticker on the stock as “Made In The U.S.A.” All the Mexican part talk is speculation repeated ad nausea. No one produces any data from Mossberg demonstrating that this is true. Nor do they present any data showing that the 500 series uses anything other than the same parts (minus the pinned forearm, trigger/safety and the receiver stamp.
