Unless it is an optical illusion from his camera or from my monitor, as he turns the barrel the cut does not seem to be a true flat cut, but somewhat slanted.
Great minds think alike. About a month ago I cut off two Midland Shotgun barrels using the hose clamp method also.. perfect every time. My friends could not believe how nice the job turned out.
Thank you so much for sharing this tip. I needed to cut an 18.5" Mossberg barrel about a 1/4" longer than the mag tube nut. I taped up the barrel and put a 3/8" wide hose clamp flush against the thing that holds the mag tube nut. Using a $3 mini hacksaw from Walmart, I cut a groove in the barrel about 2/3 the way around, then I turned the clamp a 1/3 turn so I could continue making the groove all the way around the barrel. Took my time and the groove really helped keep the cut flush. Didn't even need to clamp the barrel down somewhere, just had it sitting in my lap, lol. It really helps to not overthink it. Thanks again!
Thank you for this great video. I would also recommend making the hole for the new sight before cutting, so you can use your front bead (or hole) as a midline anchor for thin string (or fishing line) that goes all the way back to the top of the receiver.
Thats a good idea. I have a pretty good eye and it's just a shot gun so no need for profection. Although I do like your idea. I bought this shot gun, the end of the barrel was missing along with the bead site. It looked like it was torn off. I have no idea how it happened. The end of the barrel was jagged. I really didn't have much choice but to eyeball it. I like your idea though. Good job.
You can make you a nifty snap on and glue front sight by using 3/4" pvc pipe. The pipe slip fits on my shotgun barrel, really good fit. Sand like an express sight and glue on if you want to.
Zip ties work a lot better brother, two zip ties back to back lined up with your measurement, works in the same fashion but no danger of scratching the barrel.
A 20-inch cut on a Mossberg 500 barrel is perfect. If you upgrade the common magazine tube to be 7 +1, it will ride flush with a 20-inch barrel. It just gives you more options for upgrades and keeps the barrel length shorter and most important of all it keeps it legal.
I think a slight improvement might be to use one of those annoying "compression" type clamps, because they are the same width all the way around. No need to reposition your clamp part way through the cut. Also, if you positioned 2 of them to be the same distance apart as the width of your hacksaw blade it would be almost foolproof.
Just use a small pipe cutter, like that used for galvanized steel pipe and similar. Cover the barrel with masking tape, take small bites (so you don't bend the metal in), and get at it. Cheap, fast, straight, and clean.
That will work too but would also require some filing. The pipe cutter would push metal inward. It would also cut the metal on a taper. Still, not a bad idea.
You are correct, but I've cut alot of pipe in my days and there is always a little bent in from the pressure of the cutting wheel. It's just how the cutter works. It is a shot gun so it's not crucial to have it perfect. You are correct. I made this video because I seen way too many guys just lay Into the barrel with a hacksaw unguided. A pipe cutter is another good way to cut a barrel. I wish I would have thought of it when I did the video. Good job.
Good and useful tip, although I would've clamped the hose clip on the other side : on the sawed-off part of the barrel not to scratch the remaining end.
I know what you mean about the scratches, I'd consider putting masking tape or electrical tape around the barrel then the hose clamp. Thr problem with putting the clamp on the cut end is if the hacksaw slips and then you make a gouge in your remaining barrel.
If you put the hose clamp on the other side, it runs a risk of you slipping and cutting into the part of the barrel you dont want it to cut lol.... If you clamp it on the other side, you have to be very very careful not to slip.
PEA NUT, DID YOU EVER CONSIDER USING A SMALL PIPE CUTTER LIKE I DID? DOES A BETTER JOB THAN A HACK SAW, ONLY YOU HAVE TO BE SURE NOT TO LET THE CUTTING WHEEL SLIDE OVER THE FIRST FEW TURNS. VAN.
Why dont people just use a tubing cutter. im considering doing this to an old pawn shop single shot 12 gauge to cut the 30" barrel down just enough to remove the choke so i can shoot roundballs through it without worrying about splitting the barrel out or something. this brings a very important consideration. legal barrel length on shotguns (hopefully these unjust and ridiculous laws are removed soon, it is what it is)
Anybody know the legal barrel length for Ohio? From the info I gathered it's 18" like Pea Nut states, overall length is 26." Don't need any sick birds ... ifn ya ketch madrift.
You could. Both methods will work. I just prefer this way. I feel there is less filing involved. Also, shotgun barrels are tapered from the reciever to the end. A pipe cutter might not sit true. A pipe cutter will have a smother surface but will push metal inward towards the end of the cut. It's been mentioned already. It could work just as good as a hacksaw.
Yeah this advice is good, but he still screwed it up lol... He's also scratching the fk out of the barrel on that rusty vice. If you put it in a vice, it needs to be padded with something.

Really good idea, your Dad sounds like a smart man. Thanks again buddy

Good vid I'm going to try this

I use an industrial size pipe cutter. And use spiderwire 5lb test to mark my bb sight.
I also use an, 4 inch pipe cutter for steel. A perfectly squared cut and minimal file work. Great vid.
This guy has a brain that works, that's a good idea for cutting it square...You can use that as a file guide also.

Good idea, getting ready to do one today, thanks.
You're a saint, thanks for the help
thanks for the advice, iv been wondering how to get a good cut
Nicely done thank you for the idea

@@peanut6168 .. That's why I very specifically said to "take small bites (so you don't bend the metal in)." Any small taper would be irrelevant.

What an awesome simple solution !
Measured from the bolt face.
That is a great tip👍
simple and effective, thanks.
Thanks Man!!!
I use a pipe cutter for galvanized water pipe
I might have a better way if the barrel does'nt have a rib a pipe cutter works great just takes alot of turns and time but it's fool proof. 😊
He looks like a werewolf

Use a pipe cutter. Only downside is that they don't work on ribbed barrels.
And deburring them properly can be a pretty big asspain.

Use a portaband saw or a stationary one it’ll be a perfect cut then use a reamer 3 mins tops!
Good Tip
I used a cut-off saw set on 90 degrees.
Good idea!!!
Zip tie also wont scratch
Pipe cutter is the way to go on a barrel without a rib.
Smart as fuck thanks for the knowledge
pipe cutters?
How about a pipe cutter?
good idea.
Thanks.
Cool thanks

not a bad concept, but showing people to use a bench vise on their "not junk" barrels isn't a good thing.
Why couldnt you just rotate the clamp and cut from the bottom when you get to the bottom?
Anybody know the legal barrel length for Ohio? From the info I gathered it's 18" like Pea Nut states, overall length is 26." Don't need any sick birds ... ifn ya ketch madrift.
Gary Kovach just look up atf regulations and ull be fine
A lot of people cut a 18 .5 make sure to stay above legal limit
That’s correct, which is why the Mossberg 590 Shockwave is illegal in Ohio.
Why couldn't you use some big pipe cutters the one's that look like tubing cutters
You could. Both methods will work. I just prefer this way. I feel there is less filing involved. Also, shotgun barrels are tapered from the reciever to the end. A pipe cutter might not sit true. @@peanut1614 have never cut one just wondering
18.5 is best
Thats a crooked ass cut..
Exactly! I wondered why nobody noticed.

Looks like shit. Haha
That is not square
No, it's a circle
