What makes Bill so lethal is that he's such a great listener. He takes a miniscule thing and blows it up and is a masterful ranter. He's once in a generation.
The more you sit back and 'absorb', the more dangerous you become. He doesn't take the miniscule thing and blows it up for no reason, he assumes the intent to be negative and that's why he spikes you - which is sometimes wrong as he himself admitted - something that is understandable when you spend your whole life getting back handed compliments.
@@DarkForceUbz this is something i'll admit that i really struggle with. i've had some fucked up friendships and i pay super close attention to the smallest things and of course most of it is negative although there are plenty of positive things if i look at it from a broader perspective

Just be humble and accept changes in things you realize are not totally accurate and you'll be good imo. In a social way, it's weird to pay that much attention to relationships. In a human way, it's expectable. I've recently started to differentiate shxt for what their natural / human meaning is, and what the social / systematic adaptation is. That helped me a lot distinguish and treat shxt for what it is and made it easier for me to distinguish right from wrong according to my morals. Love!
Lol oh please he treated Theo like shit. He got pissy he didn't know his old TV show reference and belittled him the whole time. Was only there to promote his special that everyone knew was out. Very nasty side came out.

Bill Burr and Conan are the best pair. You can't convince me otherwise. I could listen to them talk to each other for hours. No other late night host could handle bill like conan could.
They are both razor-sharp, sophisticated, and evenly matched. Bill has his way with most other comedians like JR and TV because he's too quick-witted and can dismantle both of them with ease...

That’s what makes Bill pretty relatable. He’s honestly upfront about his insecurities. That’s the reason why he could call out the insecurities of others so easily.
I think he was great in king of staten island very belivable and did a solid job. He’s one of the top senior comics in the country and the big comics can always work a bad crowd and hecklers over in a unique way, but the way he cleared out Philly on the virus tour is the stuff of legend.
“Some people think Bill is the insecure one” He is insecure. He’s talked about his insecurities before. It’s birthed some of his best comedic insights. One of the reasons he’s able to maintain his perspective and roast people regularly is because he lets his insecurities be known.
Everyone is insecure, it's only a matter of how aware you are of your insecurities and how you deal with them. Anybody who says they're not insecure, don't know themselves well enough.

Seen Bill live, he is really like hearing an old timey uncle from a bygone era crack jokes at a BBQ in a working class backyard somewhere . He talked and told jokes for a long time and it felt like he had been up there 20 min. Me and the crowd didnt want it to end. He is a one of a kind comedian.
Me too, best money I ever spent. Being with the crowd was amazing it was genuinely like our psychotic uncle was giving his never ending thanksgiving toast and the entire arena was at the dinner table laughing together at every single joke. I’ll cherish that memory forever.
People who enjoy talking to "working class people" aka depressed angry people, probably enjoys his jokes. The rest of us sees him as the obvious asshole he is. A pathetic one at that. Fkr cant have a conversation at all.
I saw him about 15 years ago in a small nightclub in SF having zero idea who anyone was - just to go see some comedy. Bill Burr was the headliner and he killed it - kept going and going and going with the crowd dying. I almost threw up laughing so hard.
About 20 years ago I was with 25 friends in a room and we saw him perform in this tiny comedy club before he got famous. We were the only ones in the room. I only realized it was him years later. Anyway 2 of our friends, a couple, got too drunk and started talking loudly to each other while he was doing his set. He LIT INTO them, so savagely and so hilariously that everyone laughed like we were going to die. I don't think he knew that the whole room knew each other. To this day I still remember some of the jokes he told because they were so funny and so true.
I don't have 25 friends anymore. Bill Burr's savage rips tore us apart. Some of us wanted to go back and kick his ass, others (including me) thought we should kick our friends' asses for talking during the show. We started arguing, then other things came out, and well, long story short, I haven't seen most of those people since that time.
The end, with Bill being so uncomfortable with shitting on people trying comedy, kinda shows a sweeter side of him. He genuinely felt uncomfortable tearing somebody down like that
Because experienced comedians hate losing the room and being heckled. It why Bills Philly rant and Bernie Mac’s “I ain’t scared of you muthafuckers” set is so legendary.
He is not highly educated, as he stated a lot of times himself... he flunked highschool, never finished college, so theres that... but still... I love him. @@wtxcrazydonut He's not judging him, he's just refuting something that's stated in the first 20 seconds of the video... @@wtxcrazydonut I mean, being educated means completing a degree. They are not wrong, even if their grammar is. The guy in the video probably just meant he is very aware of other's body language and attentive to what they say. Then Bill Burr just goes on the attack and knows how to make people submit in a conversation. It makes him socially aware in a sense of dominance, but the guy lacks emotional intelligence.
his philly rant has got to be the funniest thing i’ve ever heard! the fact that he went off unscripted and just dropped the greatest bit ever makes him my all time fav comic
Watching this is like watching a normal conversation between friends in Lancashire (and Yorkshire). Blunt, brutal, sarcastic and yet will listen to you rant for hours to get what it is off your chest.
Not just what's in people's heads - Burr is a comedic genius because he gives words to feelings and perspectives that many people have had for a long time but could not explain. It takes a lot of effort to distill and capture the present moment and that's what makes comedy magic. Its what comedians do in the same way that philosophers do.
Yeah, right before he destroys any credibility he has by viciously insulting everyone around him for no real reason. Is he funny? Absolutely. Is he a relentless asshole who lashes out at anyone around him for no real reason at all beyond desperately trying to hide his own insecurities? Also absolutely!
One of the things that seem to genuinely bother him is when people are unprofessional with him. The bio on his website used to start with "hello to all the radio producers reading this five minutes before interviewing me on the air." He's old school and came up through comedy the hard way, that's why he doesn't have a lot of patience for people being unprofessional.
He should try to be more patient to newcomers, they have got learn sometimes. I would swap comedian/actor all the time, because it doesn't show a ranking, that which is more, but after this I would have learnt, that some peoole would be offended by swapping it. But I would also expect a more formal response, that "I prefer comedian/actor, since I am first of all a comedian"...
@@andraspalatinus145 I haven't heard of him slagging off other comics or actors. In fact on his podcast he encourages people to try comedy. His issues are usually with producers, Bookers, hosts. People that do it as a job and should know better.

I appreciate how you allow the subject to do the talking, and when you talk, you actually give context or provide your own interpretation, but you don't over-do it. It's also helpful that you use different clips to further your thoughts and provide evidence instead of just giving your opinion. So many creators talk and talk and talk because they like hearing themselves without realizing that viewers watch these videos because they love the comedians! Keep it up, my friend.
Imagine roasting the entirety of philadelphia . Bro is a beast 💪😂 End of day Bill is genuinely a nice person who standup for others and go above and beyond ❤️
The reason Bill succeeded in that Philly set so much is because he reacted in a way that Philadelphia would act, and that’s why they lived it. Like he said about always hating compliments. Responded harshly to Philly, and they loved it

Bill Burr came off as mean on Theo Vons show. And the fact that he was still humble afterwards about how he was treated… that’s why people like Theo. He’s genuinely a good guy.
I've followed Bill's career for a long time. If you really want to know why he is the way he is then look up what the cellar table was. There are plenty of stories about comics genuinely avoiding that table in the comedy cellar where a certain group of comics would sit and roast the hell out of each other to the point of some walking out genuinely upset. It toughened comics up but it can also have the opposite effect of causing a normally easygoing fun loving person into an aggressive overly guarded person at times. In today's comedy climate it's become obsolete with everyone encouraged to be supportive and he's one of the few of that group still working, says yes to as many podcasts as he can to keep in touch with today's comedy audience as well as bringing his large audience to comedy newcomers. You need to remember this was a kid who grew up in the 70's where you HAD to be tougher and talking to someone younger, more sensitive will occasionally provoke someone older to dish out some tough love like he got. I have no doubt most of today's comedians would not have lasted being roasted nearly nightly by comics like Patrice O Neal, Jim Norton, Rich Vos, Colin Quinn and many more and would have walked out feeling like they were bullied. That culture has basically gone and I'm not saying that's a good or a bad thing but you can see the damage it's done to Bill on the very rare occasion where he gets exasperated by a younger comedians question
But he usually makes it funny even if he’s upset, somehow he’s offensive but it’s still funny, there’s some irony and sarcasm behind it, it’s still passive aggressive to full on aggressive but it’s humorous so its unclear if he’s really upset by things or just pretending to be, he’s very quick witted and like Theo said very brash, it’s astounding he hasn’t gotten cancelled outright or has had a major scandal against him, I’m sorta waiting to see if he do some type of turn I won’t like as a lot of comedians have that I once laughed at and agreed with to some degree
Yes, you nailed it with this comment. I follow a lot of comedians here and there, but Bill Burr is the main guy I've followed consistently. There is something unique about the fucking lunatic and I wish I had more of this type of personality in life. Everyone around me is so fake and too afraid to actually say what needs to be said. Bill is what I imagine a NY fireman or construction worker is. He's just tough and has a good heart, but he's got a lot of armor. A lot of comedians come from rough upbringing and use comedy to cope.
You can see in that last bit that Bill isn't a bully, he’s happy to tear into people so long as they either a) Can take it or b) Had it coming. When someone seems uncomfortable and has just died he’d feel like a prick to tear into them but if they just did a good set and seem confident, he can let them have it with the confidence that they will take it well. The people on that show who tear everybody down equally, seem to lack empathy and many might be looking to belittle others to make themselves feel bigger.
Lisa Lampanelli, Jeffrey Ross, the late Greg Giraldo, the late Patrice o'Neal are/were like that too, they're old school roasters with a soul. They are not cynical like Colbert, for example.
His rant in Philadelphia is one of the best things I have ever seen. He was extremely intelligent in how he insulted them and it was funny. The situation also warranted that response from him.

Not really, but even if it was, Burr has sometimes proved to actually be harsh. There was some episode with Jim Gaffigan i saw that was just awful on Bill's part. It was insulting and NO comedy. I hope he has learned some manners. @@theoriginalmonstermaker
@terjehansen0101 I VERY much doubt he intended to insult Jim (unless they have some previous beef Im unfamiliar with); with that being said, I never said he wasn't "harsh", just that ANYONE interested in comedy shouldn't even have that word in their lexicon when discussing comedy. Ppl are straight rude to Bill regularly; he doesn't throw a fit, he doesn't whine on socmed or publish "news " stories about his poor, hurt "feelings" (though he will probably talk shht back). And, he is one of the most real, true, emphatic and considerate ppl I've heard perform/ talk, i wouldn't think he actually WANTS to offend anyone. If anyone is "hurt" by his remarks, they have NO PLACE in comedy.... but I disagree with the concept of "offense" on its face; the things that offend are either lies, and irrelevant, or truth, in which case the onus isn't on the remarker for your hurt "feelings", bc if you're hurt when ppl observe you for what you are, the onus is on you to change. Noone should have the power to offend you, unless facing the truths of "you"causes embarrassment; so maybe we should change the lexicon from "offended" to "embarrassed" ..... and THAT is the REAL issue; our modern world, which goes around constantly offended is in fact, unhappy with themselves. It's not their fault, society and social interaction has been disrupted by ppl's need to be constantly seen (and they're socially anxious bc they are well aware their socmed "life" doesn't reflect their REAL life).
@@theoriginalmonstermaker I mean first I don't see why you think every comedian is or would have to be "harsh"? I mean that is a perfectly valid form of humor there but it's not like there aren't a ton of jokes that have nothing to do with that either? It's odd you think there is only one way to be funny to people. Next I'm not sure why it matters how rude others are? If you want to be rude, be rude, but don't make excuses like other people control you. They can give you "reasons" but they can't be to blame. Next...this is just parasocial, I don't know what else to say about this? You don't know Bill and Bill doesn't know you so you don't know if he's "one of the most real, true, emphatic and considerate ppl I've heard perform/ talk. "? Like maybe he is, maybe he isn't but legit we just see his public persona? The next bit about people being hurt is just...what? Like it seems like you believe all human beings think alike? You're aware what is true for you isn't true for others when it comes to mentality, thoughts, and even the function of people's brains, right? Like if other people apply YOUR personal justifications and philosophy to *their* lives they'd be miserable because, for example, some people are capable of genuine empathy or of "righteous indignation" or simply don't believe they deserve to be a punching bag. Your ideas aren't like bad or anything I just find it odd you think they even COULD apply to anyone but yourself. This is how *you* see the world and what is true *for you*, not a set of facts or actual truths...
@VoxVictus First of all, in rereading this exchange, I'm most annoyed with all my spelling errors in the initial rant... I'm having trouble focusing on anything else : ) But yeah, I can't disagree with most of what you said so I'll say this; even though they aren't always accurate, ppl tend to perceive and discuss things in generalizations (I just made one right there). Even a mostly "true" thing would need a list of amendments to have its essence squeezed properly into words. But you're right; not all comedy is "harsh", we can't know Bill's non-public persona with certainty, and all ppl have differences (more specifically, their brains operate fundamentally different).

His helicopter piece is by far the best comedic performance I've ever seen. The story itself is great, but the way he tells it from different viewpoints with different sounds and then even sticks the landing. Genius.
I find him pretty intimidating. I was trying to put a finger on why I avoid things with him in it. I'm Irish, I recognize the aggressiveness, I guess people in Boston are pretty like us back on the island. But if I can choose it, I avoid conflict and men who seem quick to anger. Sometimes even if they're a good guy, it can still feel uncomfortable/scary
I think one of the reason he does come off as intimidating is because he is quick to offend you and make jokes that would destroy your character without hesitation. That kind of interaction display power and dominance. He say whatever he wants to say and not afraid of conflict since he's really good at ranting. I rarely see him shows any anger compare to giving out offensive humor.
Burr is on the same level as Carlin with knowing wtf is going on in society. He's much smarter than he comes across. His common sense is off the charts tbh. That's why he's beloved, everyone can relate to him 100%.
I always recognized Burrs attitude. When all of your family and friends are constantly making fun of you since birth, you just think its normal and harmless. But then it gets YOU in trouble and you're left confused. Bill leaned into it hard but tries to be normal, while for me I entirely rejected that attitude
"When all of your family and friends are constantly making fun of you since birth, you just think its normal and harmless." Not the case for those that have better relationships outside their family and grow up seeing how shitty their life is. I'd probably have ended myself if not for my friends loving and valuing me so much, unlike my family.
No way people do not constantly bust their families balls like all the time. Not saying its bad if you don't but the idea of not waking up in the morning and calling everyone I love a shithead loser is crazy to me and I'm legit not trying to be "edgy" that's just how we do it lol.
@@cosmonauthal7651 you do you, but there's a line for everyone where it's no longer "I'm just joking". I used to think it was fine, but now I see it as a weakness. Speak more honestly for a while and the whole dynamic shifts
Bill's a ball-buster. If you've ever met one of these people you need to be able to take a proper roasting and, so long as it's in good spirit, learn from it. The first few seconds of watching Theo complain about his tour grind I was like "Ahhhh shit. Bill is sensitive to this". Bill bitches about his own tours but every time I've heard it he usually acknowledges he's blessed as an MFer to have the opportunity to bitch about it.
For sure. He's principled. You get genuineness from him and he expects genuineness from others, when he doesn't get it that's when the gloves come off and he forces it out.
18:54 I love how Bill creates a shield around the new comics. He is correct. 1 minute is a long time. nobody can just be funny in 1 minute. He takes a jab at you, when he knows you are gonna far. Telling the other guy that hes a psycho and hes gonna have his own show one day. Big respect to Bill.
Bill is the only comedian that genuinely made me cry. It was because how brutally honest he was when he talked about how he had to give his dog away to another owner and his pain was so real that it almost broke me. An absolute legend!
Yeah, that was sad, especially if you've watched his earlier stand up special where he talks about how much he loved that pitbull and how much fun they were having
@johnprager662 no, they were having a baby and the dog was too rowdy. He talks about his wife crying ever day up until the day they have to part with the dog.
18:50 shows how selfless of a human and thoughtful of a person bill is. Thats fantastic and makes me feel good. This is a great video and patrick did a great job on it
Bill burr is one of the greats of comedy who consistently diligently works on his craft and delivers quality comedy. It must be exhausting out here for him .
Bill's first criticism to Theo was some shit he needed to hear. Every comedian thinks they should be a headliner, and has a phase of "I shouldn't have to open for somebody..." Bill, though, had a greatly humble beginning in comedy's mainstream: he regularly opened for Patrice. Sometimes, you've just got to accept that you're never going to be the funniest person in the room if certain people are in that room with you. Theo struggles with that. Bill told him that he has to get over it.

Bro is a beast 💪😂
End of day Bill is genuinely a nice person who standup for others and go above and beyond ❤️
The reason Bill succeeded in that Philly set so much is because he reacted in a way that Philadelphia would act, and that’s why they lived it. Like he said about always hating compliments. Responded harshly to Philly, and they loved it
It's my long time dream to see Bill on the FLAGRANT pod. As a former fan of the pod, I used to think it'd be great content. Seeing the current direction it's headed in, Andrew needs a massive reality check that only Bill can deliver.

Been watching a ton of bills stuff lately, so this is right on time
I just watched his film "Old Dads" and old dads will think its funny for sure
It's definitely a bad thing. Most of the new comics are lame. Everyone at the cellar was a legend. All diamonds are created from pressure
I am so happy Bill was able to carve out a successful career and not get thrown to the wayside by the newer generations of sensitive and inclusive people.
@@vlogily8043 I suspect much of it is pretend. Bill is quick witted and pokes fun at everyone's insecurities whether real or perceived. He roasts everyone, including himself.
@@kepler656I feel that about fake people, I have a friend that's really a nice guy, but he always says what's on his mind regardless of who's in the room, and I respect him for that. I don't think his "heart" is as pure as you think. He's a run of the mill narcissistic Republican, and by definition conservatives don't have hearts.
does a fireman or construction worker live on a FUTON!?
You can see in that last bit that Bill isn't a bully, he’s happy to tear into people so long as they either a) Can take it or b) Had it coming. When someone seems uncomfortable and has just died he’d feel like a prick to tear into them but if they just did a good set and seem confident, he can let them have it with the confidence that they will take it well. The people on that show who tear everybody down equally, seem to lack empathy and many might be looking to belittle others to make themselves feel bigger.

Bill went full on "Drunk dad taking out their anger on their son" on Theo, damn.
I'm not even a fan of Theo, but that was a bizarre interaction.
It makes a lot more sense when you realize he is a very intellectual, well traveled individual, who is very quick to point out brutal irony in society. For him, seeing a quite successful new comedian complain about the hard work is ridiculous, and he reprimands him for it. Basically, the guy is just real about life at all times, he expects people living relatively "easy" lifestyles to work just like everyone else, its fine to have issues, but, everyone does. Get over it. That's Bill burr.
@@maasman240I get what you're saying but Theo had been struggling with depression. What Bill said obviously felt like a stab to the heart. Look at how his face dropped after the funeral jab. Not only that Theo was looking forward to having him on. It was just uncalled for and disrespectful.

"Harsh" shouldn't exist in relation to comedy. That is the foundation it stands on.
Noone should have the power to offend you, unless facing the truths of "you"causes embarrassment; so maybe we should change the lexicon from "offended" to "embarrassed"
..... and THAT is the REAL issue; our modern world, which goes around constantly offended is in fact, unhappy with themselves.
I'm having trouble focusing on anything else : )
But yeah, I can't disagree with most of what you said so I'll say this; even though they aren't always accurate, ppl tend to perceive and discuss things in generalizations (I just made one right there). Even a mostly "true" thing would need a list of amendments to have its essence squeezed properly into words.
But you're right; not all comedy is "harsh", we can't know Bill's non-public persona with certainty, and all ppl have differences (more specifically, their brains operate fundamentally different).
theo von seems so genuine and humble. it was hard to watch bill tear him up like that. theo does great interviews

Fuck opening for patrice, he had to do shitty gigs at restaurants where people didn't even know there was gonna be comedy. That is brutal
