@@mogdor One could argue that he thinks he's a comedian, but that doesn't necessarily make him one. It's like Tucker Carlson - he calls himself a journalist, but that doesn't mean much.
When I think of Dane, I first think of his bit on how everyone needs a good cry. And I really appreciated that as a young person. The second bit I remember most is him talking about finally removing his parents in his phone contacts after losing both of them consecutively. It took me years to remove my Dad's number. For months after his death, I'd call him just to hear his shirt and blunt "Leave a message" voicemail. I guess the things that made him admit he's human resonated with me more than the raunchy stuff and the backlash.

I really relate to this. I kept my Mom's number in my phone for years. My Dad passed away recently and my brother and I were listening to some of his old messages. I went looking for my Mom's number, and found that it was gone. I guess it didn't make it through the many migrations.
I don't recommend this. When the reality is time doesn't heal when you lose someone that close, those are the few connections you still have. You can NEVER get back something you delete after a period of time. It can be incredibly cathartic to have that access.
When my dad died, the rest of our family (mom + 2 kids) was beside ourselves over the fact that we couldn't find many videos of him and especially videos where he was talking. I didn't realize how much I'd miss hearing his voice. Luckily, I found an old external HD that I used as a backup and it still contained videos I had deleted elsewhere (including bad video in poor lighting but he was speaking clearly). My mom was so grateful and she's carried on better than we ever could've expected.
I related to this as well. My parents are both gone. And those stand ups really resonated with me. Dane cook, no what people say, I don't care. I still like him.

I was at that Penn State show. The line was insane…I somehow was able to work my way up to the front 😂… I remember I was crying during the entire show. He did the barf routine using the stool as a toilet, I also remember the getting hit by a car skit where his shoes flew off. Time flies!
He marketed his comedy really well. Got on the social media trend which alot of comics did not do. The guy was smart about it and he deserved his success.
🤷 he earned it. The guy knew what he was doing, and there's no denying his success. I believe everyone was too harsh on him as well. When honestly, he's just one of those guys, you either love him, or deeply despise him with a fiery passion.

That was so in-depth. As a 40 year old, I completely remember his rise and sudden fall. His act cracked me up during that era. I wondered why he was so hated and now I see how that all unfolded. Stealing jokes is a felony in the comedy world, but I guess only Dane knows the truth to that.
I suggest sitting down and watching a string of new comics out there - every single set is exactly the same. Originality seems to be fading just as movies and music. But that's always been the thing, most jobbers rinse and repeat - but once in a while you'll see a Carlin pop up out of nowhere.
As for the whole young girl wife thing - bit hypocritical to shame him for it as he wasn't hosting parties jerking off in front of women who didn't want to see it.

I never knew Rough Around the Edges was mostly improvised. He was a BEAST on that special and had ONE take to get it right on improv....how can you hate. Meanwhile half the other "comedians" have other people write their shit
He was one of the first comedians to really latch onto the power of social media. I think that's why a lot of contemporary comics hated him. Instead of grinding out a following in comedy clubs he just spammed links to people who friended him on MySpace. His reach was instantly expanded from the NYC/Chicago/LA comedy scene to nationwide if not worldwide. His material was not the best but his success came from his ability to get his material in front of a lot more people.

Dane was a “live show” freak. The energy and passion he exudes is contagious and mix that with the effect of the masses and it’s pretty easy to understand the sudden success of his work. However, that doesn’t always translate to say listening to him on cd or in the car. He’s a live talent. And as much as he worked to be so much more, it also meant he flamed out way too soon.
Most of his comedy was really visual. The way he moved on stage was almost comparable to Jim Carrey. The only thing is, you can listen to Jim Carrey's jokes without seeing him on stage and it's still funny.

I remember sophomore year. My best bro 4 life Tony and i had both got our licenses. And we basically stole his parents 2nd car and drove up to their lake house, without permission. Like a 3 hour drive. No drugs or booze yet at that time. Just being deushe bag early 00's teens and laughing so hard to Dane cook's stuff we were crying the WHOLE WAY. And we were listening on a "mp3 mini disc player" (Limewire downloads) through a cassette adapter. That trip is a great memory.

Yeah he was so animated like Robin Williams and he owned the energy in the room making him seem so kinetic and like his material was alive and a bit funnier that it had a right to be, if you saw his sets on paper they aren't really funny but are delivered with such assurance you can't deny the energy and he was quite witty in the pocket but in reality he let his confidence make him arrogant and other comedians in the green room couldn't stand him because in person the dude is known to be a douche and not very charitable and actually quite jealous of up and commers like Greg Geraldo and Anthony Jeselnik who were actual joke writers and by all accounts far more funny.

In 2000 Dane came to my college and it was very poorly promoted. I worked at the student union which is where it was held so I knew about it. About 15-20 people showed up in a room set up for 600. He stayed on stage for close to 4 hours. It was awesome.

While not my cup of tea, the man found his audience and became successful. There's no disputing that, and it only shows how cruel less successful people can be.
Nice when people can admit that. I can understand why people wouldn't love the way he acts, but to say he's not funny at all is silly.
Eh, if he was stealing jokes, then he is building his success off the backs of others. I can't abide that. Never hated the guy, I liked his stuff back in the day and wondered why he fell off.
The fact is that other comics didn’t start hating him because of stolen jokes, they hated him because he was infinitely more successful than they were. Cooks comedy isn’t my cup of tea, and even as someone who isn’t a fan, the jealousy of other comics was always clear. Cook maximized the return on his talent, regardless that he isn’t the most talented comedian out there. THAT is why other comics hated him, because they saw a comic that wasn’t incredibly talented being incredibly successful, and they felt it was unfair. They could have maximized their career like he did, but they wanted to do things their way, and were not as successful. It’s similar to a blue collar employee hating their manager. The employee may be more intelligent than a manager, but the manager went to college, earned a degree, and did what was necessary to be more successful. The employee could have done those things, but chose not to, and is now resentful that the manager gets paid more.

I view Dane as the Nickelback of comedy. Didn’t do anything wrong but everyone just decided to turn on them when they made it big.
Much like Nickelback he just has an unlikable quality to him that a lot of people catch on to. He just reminds you of like a guy you knew in college that your friends would hang out with but you always thought he was a total boner. The kinda guy whod always come in with some whacky story you know is bullshit and shows you up every chance he gets.
Funny. I think it has to do with getting more popular than they would “deserve” based on the merits of the art alone. Similar to Dane Cook friending very one on MySpace, Nickleback also marketed themselves in a weird way: they lied to radio stations telling them that other radio stations were playing their music in regular rotation, basically tricking the radio stations into believing nickleback was popular so they’d better play it too.

Hot damn I miss myspace. The screenshot at 4:47 blindsided me with a sense of nostalgia I wasn't prepared for. I could literally smell the living room of my parents house when I was 16. Social media was more exciting when it wasn't a news/ad feed at your fingertips constantly. You got home, you logged on, and you waited to see who reached out to you intentionally. It had its own special charm to it you don't find often anymore.
Don't forget how you could intentionally arrange the order of your friends list! If you were in someones "Top X", you were hot shit!

I had so many interactions with musicians on MySpace that I never would have had in person.
Once bands started figuring out how beneficial MySpace was to growing the brand, band members were excited to converse with fans.
One of my fondest memories on MySpace was getting to chat with the lead singer, Dale, for the band Bride.
I had been following the band and playing their songs for years.
One day there was a notification from the band’s profile asking if anyone wanted to join a group to just talk music, what instrument people played, how everyone got started.
I was the only person to respond. Dale went ahead and started the group anyways, and the two of us chatted back and forth for a long while.
I miss those days a lot.
I remember graduating high school when Dane was just getting really popular and I left for the Army came back years later to everyone bashing him and never could find out why until now, Thank you!
I enjoyed Dane's content back in the day but I could see how people wouldn't. I haven't seen anything about him in ages and this answers why. Glad to hear he's still at it after everything he's gone through. He still maintains his trademark positivity. You gotta respect that.
Also he's in one of my favorite movies, even though it's just a small role. Mystery Men was way ahead of its time.

He's the nickleback of comedy. He's really not bad at all, but for some reason he has this reputation that you love to hate. His vibe is just... perfect for comics to hate, and perfect for us to think we're sophisticated by hating.
Patrice O'Neal had mad love for him. And if you know comedy, then you know that Patrice O'Neal was and is the GOAT. Dane Cook actually has something that a lot of the 'sell out' comedians don't have... if you listen to funny, then one day you'll learn the difference between Dane and Kevin Hart.
I still think his b&e set is one of the funniest things I've ever heard from anyone. I don't know why but I literally have a UA-cam video of that saved and whenever I'm feeling down or sad I'll re-watch it 😂 he's a really good storyteller. And I don't think he gets credit for that. Being a good storyteller is one of those things that you can't really learn. You either are one or you aren't. It's one of the most underrated personality traits. I don't care what anyone says that set made me laugh until I cried.

I actually liked him in Employee of the Month because he didn't have to carry the movie by himself and several of the cast members are pretty funny.

I was looking in the comments to see if anyone knew that movie. That movie was filmed close to where I live and right before Katrina wiped out that area. It's crazy to think the now mega star Ryan Reynolds was in that little cheap movie that close to me.

The thing that makes it harder to prove joke theft with these guys too is when your style is "relatable content" a lot of people have similar experiences and therefore similar relatable stories
While that may be true, even 'similar' experience isn't enough to get you off the hook in comedy. Even a whiff of joke stealing is enough to get you Mencia'ed. It's sorta like hosting a game night with a bunch of tweens when your in your 40's. Technically, there's nothing wrong with it but it still looks gross AF.

Never hated on him, but never understood why he was popular. Now I know, it was because he got in on the ground level on a huge internet phenomenon. Good for him. There's always someone who takes advantage of new developments in media or technology. And they almost always burn out as fast as they came because other more talented people eventually figure it out and then you don't have anything special anymore.
I’m the same. I could never get through more than a minute of any of his routines, but he wasn’t a jerk. He just wasn’t funny. I don’t begrudge anyone their success, though, even if they aren’t my cup of tea.
I love stand up comedy, so when everyone was saying how funny he was, I watched his specials. I didn't crack one smile. It was weird, I can see the humor in his jokes, but I just couldn't laugh.

Yep.. that's how I feel. He worked his ars off to get ALL his fans. Other comedians just let people move them up as they want and let themselves be controlled by the industry's Politics. He didn't, he went out and grabbed it. That's why all the other comedians that weren't smart enough started hating on him.
Will always be a fan! I never felt like I saw stolen work. Ill have to go back and rewatch his stuff but honestly props to him. It's like how everyone hated Nickelback but really couldn't tell you why.
unpopular opinion: I prefer Dane Cook to George Carlin, or Bill Burr, or Jim Gaffigan. Carlin whined and complained, Bill Burr relies on being "edgy" and Gaffigan's face, voice and dumb hot pockets jokes irritate the snot out of me.

After his Comedy Central special came out, I ended up writing him an email in 2000 asking advice for a young comic. To my surprise, he wrote me back and it wasn't just one sentence. It was a few tips on getting 5 minutes together, signing up for any-and-all Open Mics and willing to drive/travel to anywhere within reason to perform, because you don't get good/comfortable without practice. He has some niceties at the end as well. It gave me a huge amount of respect back then as he was on the upwards path of his career and I wish I had the Hotmail account where it was stored for years.

Dane Cook was actually my introduction to stand up comedy. He's partly one of the reasons why I got drawn into that type of comedy and try to search for a lot of different comedians. Throughout the years I noticed that he just went off the radar and after knowing of the things that happened to him. I felt rather sad than hate towards Dane. Although now I'm glad he's slowly getting back up with his new special

Underrated comedian Shane Torres has a *great* bit out there about how people hate Guy Fieri for just chasing his dreams, and it’s true; part of it is treating him like he’s a member of Nickleback which is immediately followed up with “And btw, _what the hell did Nickleback ever do to you?”_ It’s really funny and also legit made me think less cynically of successful people and the world in general.

He should have been an actor, instead of a comedy writer. Greg Giraldo stated he was a bad actor but he was great at writing jokes, especially along with Jesse Joyce who helped in some of his roast jokes. Giraldo was great for standup comedy but wasn't an actor.

My squad and I used to listen to him a lot during my second tour to Iraq in ‘05 and ‘06. We all thought he was really funny and had no idea he was blowing up back home. We’d often play his album in the humvee while on patrol. You guys can hate him all you want, but he made us laugh during some rough times.

As others said, he got really big really fast and that tends to make people get sick of your particular style a lot more quickly. That's not really his fault, it's more of a problem with the way the entertainment industry finds someone or something people enjoy and drives it into the ground through oversaturation. Dane is one of those comedians that even if you don't personally like his comedy, you can't deny his impact. He's a really funny person and also a good guy based on what most in comedy say about him as a person, even if they didn't like his jokes. And his appearance on Louis C.K.'s FX show will always be legendary. He's one of few comedians that's been accused of joke theft that's actually handled it in a decent way. There's no real good reason to hate the guy.

I grew up watching comedy. Every Friday night I'd go to my friends house and we'd watch stand up all night long. I clearly remember Dane Cook. My friends thought he was hilarious. Me on the other hand, I wasn't a fan of performance comedy. It wasn't a big deal though, I watched a lot of comedians that I didn't find funny. Not all the comedians who made it on Comedy Central Presents were hilarious especially as the seasons went on and on.

Yeah, I never really fully understood the hate going against him, I think you nail it with the oversaturation. He was not a genius comedian, but he didn't have to be, he made people laugh and that should be enough for it. He did a great job in marketing himself, and lets be realistic, that's also a thing entertainers should be doing, if they want to be successful. People don't like it when artists they enjoy receive any sort of legitimate criticism, so they blame their decline in popularity on broad, nebulous concepts like "Hollywood" or "The media", rather than engage in any sort of actual critical thinking. Dane's downfall had nothing to do with "Hollywood" and everything to do with being rejected by his peers (who resented his mass appeal/potential joke theft), as well as his inability to adapt/change along with his audience, who eventually outgrew his style. It's literally all in the video. But sure, blame Hollywood, I guess?

I have a ton of respect for people who just keep going, and he did. Most would have stopped and taken a desk job or something similar, but he continued. You really have to believe and like yourself enough to keep moving, when nothing else is.

Comedy is all about delivery. Dane's Viscious Circle was HILARIOUS. my sister and i still quote "angel baby. My precious angel baby."
Steve Martin's biography is really interesting and I think it describes comedy of his era pretty well. It's clear that he did not think of himself as being naturally funny - he practiced his bits relentlessly. It was kind of who he was as a person - he was a performer who wanted to perfect his performance which oddly enough often centered around making fun of himself as a performer. But there are people who, if not exactly funny, are naturally good at being entertaining. So if you look critically at their material you might not see anything of any depth you can deconstruct or analyze critically, but that doesn't mean they are not entertaining to watch or that their performance doesn't have value (possibly to a specific group of people).
I was about 15 or 16 and I remember emailing Dane telling him how much I loved his comedy and how he was my idol. An hour and a half later I got a reply saying "hey ..... (addressed me by my first name) thanks man I appreciate it." It blew my mind I replied back fanboying about Employee of the Month and he replied with in 30 mins saying "thanks and how he tries his best to be the best version of himself." To a young guy who loved comedy to get a reply from his favorite comedian so fast made me an even bigger fan. Mind you this was in 2012 after Myspace died and Facebook took over. Well after the early years of grinding it out messaging every fan back. That is a memory I will never forget.

Probably his delievery and content. Minus the stolen jokes. I loved Dane as a young teen and felt his comedy resonated with what was going on in my life at the time. It's weird to hear this because I was born in 1991 and I remember being obsessed with Dave Chappell in late middle school and watched lots of Comedy Central late night comedy and I even liked cringe acts like Lisa Lampenelli but I could never get into Dane Cook, I kinda put him in the category of Jeff Duhnam or Larry the Cable guy (who were both overplayed on Comedy Central at that time for some reason) as the obnoxious comedians I couldn't really get into on the roster.

His Vicious Circle special is what got me in to comedy. I’ve heard several comedians that I respect talk about how easy it is to “steal” jokes so they actually make a point to not listen to much stand up. I think there’s a huge difference between repeating a joke almost line for line and absorbing jokes you hear and then having them naturally come out in your writing process later. It’s extremely hard to be 100% original in any craft. Humans have been around a long time and everything gets repeated. It’s an unfair expectation to place on people I think.
Parts of a bit always gets stolen by comics and there is no denying that. What distinguishes comics is how they incorporate those bits and change it up along with subject matter. Along with how they manipulate the crowd. With Dane Cook his style is pretty low ceiling which when it was going well, he can get his fanbase to eat it up. But when it gets rough for him, he's not that kind of comic to adjust or flip a crowd around back to his side. The greats understand these nuances and are pretty silly and subtle about it.
If he were a Jewish woman, people wouldn't see things as clearly as you do. It's unfortunate. C'est la vie.

Bill Burr is such a great man. He built Dane up even after saying it wasn’t for him.
I saw Dane live at my local ARENA at his height. The fact that he sold out the same venue that at the time people like Britney Spears was, was insane. Unheard of for a comedian at that time.
His best role is absolutely in "Waiting" he freaking kills it and steals every scene he's in
