Why is she so underrated? When people talk about the greatest jazz ladies, they mention Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holiday. Yes they were great singers, but Mary Lou Williams is without doubt the most important woman in Jazz history. She has written hundreds of original compositions and she also tutored many jazz greats including Coltrane, Monk and many others. She should be getting the same recognition as Coltrane, Parker, Monk etc.
Ans she had all the history of jazz in her hands from JR Morton to Cecil Taylor

One of my all-time Jazz favourites....so many works of hers...but I guess Moten Swing and Twinkin' are always in my head ! Her version of Round Midnight is astounding !
Great interview! I always love hearing clips of Mary Lou speaking (and, of course, love her playing!!). There will be a performance of "Mary's Lou's Mass" on Wed, Feb 20 at Park Ave Christian Church in NYC. Thanks to "A Journey Through NYC Religions" for posting the info at their site!
Mary Lou Williams was so humble and loved Jazz so much that she did not really care about getting recognition for herself. She just wanted people to play Jazz and that is why she tutored so many people. She was a great human being as well. She used to let starving musicians in her house and she would give them free meals.
