It was sort of intentionally bad in the og- the creators were big fans of "cheesy teen romance"- but for one thing, there was more than one romance we actually had good reason to care about, and for another thing, the romances felt more prompted than forced (with exceptions). For Korra, there's only one romance consistently relevant throughout, and there's essentially no saving grace for it- the moments where it's arguably wholesome are a lot harder to argue as being wholesome than what we were given to work with in The Last Airbender.

The thing that annoys so much about the love triangle and the cheating in this show is the fact the characters can move on it from it so fast and hold no grudges. It's not impossible but it's very unlikely.
You don't just "become bi" just because Korra and asami dated mako doesn't mean they weren't bisexual while dating him, just because it wasn't mentioned, doesn't mean it wasn't there ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ the show writers wanted to make it canon in the show but the network said no so they made it in afterwards in the comics

If they do a live series like Avatar, I say make them the same age and cut out Mako dating either of them.
