- Applies from 1994-2004. There are a few differences on 1994-1997 models, but for the most part it is the same. (Also, torque specs may be a little different as well. I recommend getting your own repair manual so you have all the specs on hand.)

I did this job in the street. Truck broke down on Friday and I had an interview on Monday. Sold my dirtbike Friday night, bough all the parts Saturday morning and started wrenching right there in front of my moms house. Glad there is someone determined to get that job. Sounds like what I did with my ram.. Cam and lifter swap in a day and a half to use my truck on Monday to pull my 15 year olds trailer so he can mow lawns. Yes you heard me right it’s my 15-year-olds trailer and equipment lol he’s set up which he bought everything mowing lawns . I bought his zero turns at auctions and fixed them for him while he learned mechanics.

Dude you don't know how much time you saved me. I just picked up this s10 with a blown head gasket and I've just been stuck with the intake
A few of the intake bolts are easiest to get going through the wheel well. You may need to lift that corner of the truck and remove the wheel to get in there. When I did one I did not leave the intake on the head, I had it unbolted and pulled a few inches away from the head.
Working on my 2.2 right now (2000) discoverd coolant streaks in my last oil change so figured at 270k miles time to replace the head gasket, thanks for posting such a good video bud! S10s are a labor of love

Just replaced the cylinder head with a remanufactured head this weekend on my 03 GMC Sonoma 2.2! I watched your video several times to clear up a few things! Thanks for posting this video!
Thank's for the scary video. When I venture into the dark zone of smudgeville I bag and label my bolts and take photos to remember the minute details in this maze so as to remove the hex I would otherwise create by forgetting what it is supposed to be in it's natural untouched gob corroded beauty , just a friendly nudge. And don't forget to clean your parts,especially that smudge pot throttle body, geez!
You did a great job of focusing on the highlights and providing details where it was needed.
It's much easier to start with the fan (remove it & pulley), then remove the thermostat housing and the 4 bolts that hold the big bracket that everything mounts to, and the 2 bolts that attach rear bracket to the exhaust manifold. Lift & pull forward the whole bracket with accesories still bolted to it, and lay it forward. Saves removing ac compressor, power steering pump etc. and it's less hassle & time leaving it all together as an assembly. Goes back together easier also. :)
Subscribed... I don't even have an S-10 or anything close to a 2.2L engine but I can appreciate any little pointers you have to offer in case I come across one some day. You can never know enough. Good work.

Replacing the exhaust manifold was the biggest PITA i have ever had to deal with on mine. Ive replaced the shocks, control arms, starter, alternator, spark plugs, etc. Exhaust manifold was by far the hardest. Mostlyy because it had siezed bolts and shit. Man what a nightmare of a job lol.

You can use liquid paper to mark your plug wires at the coil packs and any marker up top.

Does the power streering cooler need to come off to remove head also did you attach both manifolds onto head before installing oir waited to head was set on motor then installed the manifolds to each side.Tks
This is really interesting to watch how all this is setup I honestly never knew that these small s10 pickups carried the 2.2L 4 cylinder engines I always thought they was meant for the Chevy Cavaliers that ran these 2.2L SFI OHV L4 engines otherwise this something very new to me and how this engine is sitting in the engine bay sitting not sideways like a front wheel drive vehicle and as for me I have gotten a head gasket replaced on my 98 Chevy cavalier and was curious how this was done for this I'm very intrigued by watching this setup here
I have a 97 with 2.2 5 speed bought new love it. My friend put a sunfire 2.2 motor in his S15 same motor in some of those just sideways as you stated for the front wheel drives.
Always mark and return lifters, push rods and rockers to the exact same location as these are now mated to each other and may cause issues if you don't.
I need to do this right just blew my head gasket and I'm gonna attempt to do this myself so thanks for helping me. I have the same truck but mines a 98 s10 and it's my first truck so I wanna get it fixed so I can drive again.

I had the same problem but resolved it quickly.
I disconnected the exhaust manifold at the head and exhaust flange at the catalytic converter. After removing the head you can manipulate the EM up and over the block enough to cut the bolt head with a regular hacksaw in 1 minute.

Nice job on the head gasket. I am replacing some leaky gaskets and valve stem seals on my 98 S10 with the head on the engine. The valves ones back by the firewall are blocked by the EGR valve and bracket overhanging them. Do you recall how you removed that bracket? Does it need to come off to replace the cylinder head gasket? My Chiltons manual is vague on this. Thanks for any help from anyone who reads this.

I just took my head off. Your vid was very helpful. I tried to leave my exhaust manifold on but of course one of the three bolts refused to budge. So I took the manifold off and keep going. But now I have a problem with my exhaust system. How to separate the first pipe from the manifold? I can't leave it with one bolt froozen in place. So I went to disconnect the first pipe from the cat/converter. Same thing. One bolt was froze solid. I couldn't get it with a grinder or saw. I finally cut it half off with a saw. Then I was able to unbolt it. That allowed me movement to get to the manifold bolt. I cut it off then. Now I'm trying to drive the bolts out of the cat/converter. They are pressed in. No luck so far. If I had just taken the manifold off to begin with.

I have a 95 with the 2.2 and the head gaskets actually in great condition however I went to change the plugs which were seized pretty badly but when I got to spark plug number 3 I noticed a bunch of old sealant around it and when I cleaned that off I noticed the plug didn’t even have a nut.. figured I could either replace the engine or just the head.

Is the truck still going good? You have studs for rockers it looks like which would be 37 ft lbs even though your truck is 2000 and it states it should have nuts.

Very helpful
Spray the lower exhaust bolts real good with WD-40 or other penetrating oil ahead of time before trying to remove them. Even up to a day ahead spraying multiple times. That way the bolts don't strip or snap on you.

your video is Awsome. i just got an Isuzu hombre pick up with a 2.2liter same as chevy. Ok my problem is that is loosing coolant from the back of the head and fire wall. The previous owner told that it need a head gasket job, but i drive the truck no overheating the oil is super clean run very good. Any suggestions.........
There is a plate on the back of the head held in place by four 8 mm bolts. I would check to see if that is leaking. Are your heater hoses good? Normally head gaskets leak on the inside. It would be possible for it to leak externally, but I doubt it. Check that plate and check all the hoses first and go from there.

Did you resurface the heads?
Your engines looks like mine. Covered in oil. The radiator cracked and I ended up with a new water pump also. The oil mya have come from the power steering unit.

This is a good tip when you replace a radiator take the radiator out of the box take the cardboard cut it lay it on top of the fins put tie wraps thru the radiator secure the cardboard to each side of the radiator install radiator leave cardboard on if you're working on something and you don't want to damage the fins hook up the hoses assuming that the fan blade is on the engine cut tie wraps pull out cardboard install fan shroud think about what I said

Head gasket set: FEL-PRO HS9170PT2
Head bolts: FEL-PRO ES72170
I buy my stuff from RockAuto. Just go to RockAuto.com, enter your vehicle’s information, select “engine”, then select “cylinder head gasket / set”. I strongly suggest the Fel-Pro gaskets. Then go to “cylinder head bolt” to add your head bolts.

i bought this 97 sonoma has the 2.2 4 cylinder also been off the road for awhile
i turn it on every now and then
but i just started to get into serviceing it
havent changed anything as far as fluids besides antifreeze
i drove it to a tire shop the other day and the temp started to raise
ill put it in neutral (Awhile rolling) and rev it and the temp will go down
its not knocking or white smoking
anyways drove back home parked it and now im trying to see if the headgasket blown
i took off the pcv valve and it had a bit of milky substance in it
i checked the dipstick no milky stuff on it besides its runny
and on cold starts it misfires and after a few revs it idles perfectly
what do you think?
im not mechanically inclined enough to do a full gasket change

How hot did it get? Is the coolant low in the radiator? If so, does the coolant smell like gas fumes or oil? Also, you could take the radiator cap off, start it up and see if coolant shoots out. And look for bubbles in the coolant. Just be careful if you do this and make sure the engine is cooled down.
You could also do a compression test. If the compression is good most likely the head gaskets are good. I would start out with the coolant test. If the coolant does shoot out or smells bad, then you know the gasket is bad. If you are still unsure, then you could go ahead and do the compression test.
As far as it overheating, does the radiator fan have good resistance? When the engine is off (obviously), try spinning the fan. If it spins freely then it is not working correctly. If you give it a good push, it should only spin maybe a 1/2 to 3/4 turn.

It went over normal temp when it overheated
Before I took off the thermostat earlier I checked the oil and it looked ok and like you know if the pan had water the oil will stay floating on top thus good sort of oil viscosity on the dip stick so then i started it and like always it on cold starts, it starts but misfires then after a few revs it runs perfectly
Then I checked the oil dip stick again and it looked like coffee color and was runny
The thermostat was old and was stuck open sideways which restricted flow of antifreeze
No white smoke
no knocking

So when you say it looked like coffee, you mean light colored right? Like chocolate milk? You don't always see white smoke when the gasket blows. And also the misfire seems related to the head gasket as well. Like I said, I would do a compression test before taring it apart. Unless it is obvious that it is blown.

The best order was taught me to do head bolts on any head job would be 12465397 810 so then its the most even all round

looking at this its the same as my 95 sonoma 2.2l so technically its a diy for 94-04? there are a few different thing such as intake. once thats remove its all the same

Putting a small amount wouldn't hurt. Just don't put much because it can cause problems.

I am doing this on my buddy's '99 S10 in Hilo Hawaii in June because I told him to get a new $6 radiator cap, and he didn't. I just ordered a rebuilt head with no core to take with me cause chances are he warped and cracked his. How long did this take you start to finish? I do V6's and 4's all the time but this is my first S10. Thanks again!!!
Thank you! Good idea on ordering a new head. I did it over the coarse of a few days, only working a few hours per day. Overall I believe it took me between 14-16 hours start to finish. Depends on how fast you work. I probably could have done it faster, but I like to take my time and make sure I get everything done right.
Great, thanks. I use air ratchet and a Ryobi Impact driver with a socket attachment to remove bolts as it makes the job faster and easier. Having the correct tools for the job is critical, like your angle ratchet head. I do the same, take my time with this stuff because I hate doing things twice!! Thanks again!
Also, you removed the clutch fan, and used the correct wrench for it, was the nut standard right-hand thread or was it Left-hand (Lefty Loosey?)? Heard they can vary. Couldn't tell from the vid.
Yes, having the right tools definitely gets the job done faster and easier. The big fan nut is regular threaded (turn left to remove).

How did you disconnected the fuel rail back on the firewall side.
You only need to disconnect it by the intake manifold (passenger side where metal fuel rail goes into the line). I'm not sure if it disconnects by the firewall. If it does I don't remember seeing it.

Hi, I just recently ran into trouble with my 2003 Chevy S10. I been told that it could be a blown head gasket. Could you possibly tell me some key points that it could be that? Like its not getting any compression and won't start. There isn't any leaking from it if that helps any 😅
Did it overheat? If it did and now it won't start then most likely it's blown. Other symptoms would be white smoke (if it did run), milky oil, oil in coolant, or engine compression coming out through the radiator. What you could do is pull the radiator cap off and turn the engine over. If coolant shoots out or you feel a lot of air pushing out, then that's a head gasket. Also the coolant will probably smell like oil.
I don't think so, but there was white smoke. really I'm just worried if the block in the engine is cracked.

I would suspect a cracked head over a cracked block. I would take the head off and get it pressure tested and check the gasket. That's probably all that's wrong. I really don't think it would have a cracked block. Not saying it is not possible, just I doubt it.

About 2 days taking my time.
Iv got a 96 sonoma and theres and external leak. Every week the reservoir is just about emty. The back of the engine is wet. Looks like its coming from the back of the heads. Where the head gasket is. Do you think this could be a head gasket? I cant see the back of the head to confirm it's the headgasket, just the side near the back.
There is a plate on the back of the head that I believe is held on with four 8mm bolts. Check that for leaks and check your heater hoses back there. Head gaskets normally don’t leak coolant externally.
@@MightyMechanic i looked at the plate earlier tonight(egr adapter i believe its called and 6 bolts for my year) and the heater hoses are good(already had one that ran my coolant way down about 6 months ago). its hard to tell if its the plate or the head because they are so close together. and on my model the plate is very close to the firewall. (supposedly its further away on 98+) im going to get a head kit before i remove the plate just incase, cuz if the plate gasket it fine (then its the head gasket) or because if the old gasket cant be removed off of the back of the head while the head is installed. (cant even see the plate without a mirror its so far in)

I have a question. I just recently did a swap to my truck got an engine out of a 2000 mines is 99 . My old motor blew a rod that's why I needed a new one . I picked one off Craigslist with it in running condition he even send me a video of it running . When I swapped it I started it up and white smoke started coming out exhaust. I praying its not a head gasket leak. I checked oil its not milky . I checked spark plugs and they are dry . Any suggestions what it could be ???
Does the engine run okay? Does the exhaust smell like coolant? Also, how long did you run it? Did it have a few minutes to burn off any moisture that may have got into the engine during the swap?
I would take the radiator cap off and see if there is any oil in it. You could also start it up with the cap off and see if coolant shoots out. That way you could see if there is any combustion pressure leaking into the cooling system.
You could also do a compression test to see if it has good compression in all the cylinders. All the cylinders should be within about 10% of each other.
MightyMechanic yes it runs good , I took it around the block about 2 times like a minute drive. The coolant looks good no bubbling or oil in it ill have to check taking the cap off and starting it .and check the smell.
MightyMechanic I will also do a compression test to check .
If it turns out that it has good compression, I would check all the vacuum hoses and make sure there is not extra air getting into the engine.
How did it fail?
The radiator blew and it overheated, which warped the head.
What tool did you use at 6:43 and what did you remove?
That is a hose clamp removal tool. I was sliding that clamp back to remove the heater hose.

Honestly can’t remember but I believe it took me around 10-12 hours. (Took me longer because I was filming)
does AC bracket go above head bolts or below?
the reason i ask is because i found the head bolts were used to hold the ac bracket down - it must be wrong
The head bolts have studs for the bracket nuts. So bolt and torque down the head and then put the bracket on the studs of the head bolts with the nuts. DO NOT put the bracket under the main bolts.

whoever replaced the head gasket did not leave them ill have to shop around and find a replace nut(s) i will also have to find the bracket for the alternator, it was only bolted in with one bolt in the front

It was the fuel line but I was able to replace the gasket without removing it. Really appreciat the video it was the only way I could have gotten the job done.
How did it hold up? Debating buy a truck for cheap with a blown Head.

To do it yourself, head gasket, with all the parts you need, about $300-400. Engine rebuild around $1000-1500. Plus any tool expenses if you don't have them.
