As some of you know this job had a personal connection for me. My friend Ryan Coffey, who was the former owner of the truck, lost his life to cancer last year. His parents brought me the truck and a new engine so that I could make it run again. I was honored to do the job, and make this video series for you. I present this series as a tribute to Ryan and his family. I know you guys like watching my engine replacement videos, and I'm glad to know that this series will get some views and get Ryan's name out there. Ryan loved my show and having his truck featured in my videos, it's been in 3 before this series came out. I think this is a great way to honor him and his memory. Here's some some links to those videos as well as other stuff you might find useful.

Eric, I have a 2001 chevy S10. It has almost a half a million miles on the block. I have rebuilt the engine in stages a few times now and I think it is time to replace. I hate car payments so I bought a new engine just like the one on your Awesome Show. I plan to use your lessons learned to do mine. Thank you so much for your service and I will donate as much as I can. God Bless or whatever you believe in. I am following you now.😃😃😃😃😃
So far so good. Excellent tutorial as always
Great video Eric. I'm such a novice at all of this, but tend to learn more and gain understanding, if not confidence in tackling a few your suggestions. I think it's great that your dedicating this to your friend Ryan. So sorry for your loss. I'm sure his family will appreciate all the hard work you put into this swap, + video. Looking forward to Part 2! Take care.
Best mechanic and teacher ever. Greetings Eric! God Bless You!!
Excellent video I have a 1998 2.2 Sonoma and learned a lot about the sensors and hoses and so much more watching your work your magic along with killer detailed info.
Kudos man.
Eric your a great man.....and excellent instructor and mechanic
I need to learn about cars in English for professional reasons and your videos are helping me a lot. Thank you very much! subscribed. greetings from Brazil!
Thank you for these! Very well thought out and informative. About to do my 2000 S10. Long block sitting the bed ready for me to get with it. Now, I think I will!
Thank you Eric. I realized today that I was looking for working principles. I have no experience, 63 years old and I’m going for it. With this kind of guidance, Toyota 3.0 to 3.4 swap.
Sorry about your loss Eric! :/ i know how you feel.R.I.P Ryan Still watching every video to learn something new! Keep up the good work!
Here we go again...I'll probably never own a Sonoma in my life but I'm watching this anyway and now i'm hooked. Can't wait for part 2...
Is it uploading yet :)
I am sorry for your loss, Eric. Thank you very much for the great video.
I'm sorry for the loss of your friend, you seem very fond of his family. You're a great guy love your videos. Wish you were in Houston, TX, I'd bring you my 2003 S-10 to help me with getting it all fixed up. Keep the videos coming bro.
Wow, Eric! Looks like this series is shaping up to be a masterpiece of sorts. I don't believe you've ever been so thorough in engine swap videos. It reflects your dedication to honoring Ryan's memory. Well done, mate. Looking forward to the rest of the series
Excellent video series i remember watching this while i was 13-14 years old in middle school
Thank you so much Eric I'd be lost without you buddy keep doing what you doing because you're helping a lot of people im one of em
RIP Ryan Coffey. And thank you very much, Eric.
I was looking to watch a video on replacing the gasket on the intake manifold
however in honor of Ryan I will watch this whole video
RIP
Ryan
Keep those videos coming Eric. Although I don't have a GM product, I like your different approaches to tear downs.. I hope # 2 films smoothly.
Oh that is a hard history of this truck. Cancer is such a creepy disease. We actually have such a case in our family as well. After chemo-/radiotherapy and a heavy surgery, we hope, my mother in law is doing better now (cervix cancer). Greetings from Germany.
You are a really good mechanic I took the head off my 2.2 leave the intake manifold on it and exhaust manifold so when you put the head on the other engine you don't have to mess with the intake
I thought you were great before and now you have permanently made a good guy spot in my mind. sorry to hear about your friend and I know he appreciates your video in his honour!!!!
Great vid. In addition to putting bolts back in their holes to keep them from getting lost or mixed up, I also like to group bolts in ziploc bags and write on them with a sharpie. "power steering pump bolts". Mixed up or lost bolts can make a job seem twice as hard.
I have the same jack, it does the same thing with the handle, it lowers it self all the time. Great video.
Very nice intro Eric, from the heart. Great video so far too, only about 10 minutes in but looking forward to finishing this as soon as I can :)
You know your stuff, Eric! Love watching the videos! Thanks!
Eric, I'm sorry for your loss cancer can be a hard thing to deal with, I know my little sister had cancer and thankfully beat it. This was a great video! I actually replaced an engine in a 4.7 HO jeep Grand Cherokee :-) I can't wait for your next video! Keep up the great work!
Nice job with the engine so far! Very sorry to hear about Ryan! A guy I went to school with, who was also Ryan succumbed to a brain tumor 2 years ago, he was 18 and just several months shy of graduating high school
And now the anticipation will kill me until part 2 comes out! Great job Eric!
RIP Ryan, I'm learning a lot for you Eric not only on mechanical work also to be a better man.
The body on that Sonoma looks pretty great! I have a 2002 model s10, my parents bought it new and it has quite a bit of rust considering that it's no older than what it is.
Let's go on a journey. One where we swap out an engine in this little GMC Sonoma.
2001 GMC Sonoma 2.2L Engine Replacement (Part 1) -EricTheCarGuy
Good video Eric
EricTheCarGuy .hey man were did you get that long block from for that sonnama
Sorry about your loss, Eric, Thanks for the video.
I was just trying to help some guy with a 2001 Chevrolet S-10. He had a problem with the ARR Pump hose and existence of and location of the pump. I shared with him about ETCG and the Engine R&R series on the Sonoma (right at the parts counter at a GM dealer). His answer is right at 31:25! Eric saves the day again. The price of my part mysterious was increased by 45% from MSRP. I'll shop elsewhere. I hope he finds Eric's channel! It just illustrates how good the videos are at ETCG!
I own a 2000 Sonoma 4 cyl manual,w/125k im gonna watch this series for sure
Great Video. The mass connectors for that engine are on bottom of the fuse box and on the ecu.
Man it must take so long to edit all these ..... Thanks for all your hard work Eric these vids are fun and informative
I appreciate the proper terminology and lack of vulgarity.
Excellent video.
btw.....I once worked with a good underwater robotic (ROV) electronic tech from Louisiana that used "sh*t" in every sentence to describe nearly everything as in "this s*&t goes here, connected to this s*&t, that in turn feeds this s*$t".
I like these engine replacement videos! Much respect Ryan R.I.P :(
hi Eric love the motor 2.2 swap videos and my hat goes out to you on this one very detailed and to the point. do more please
I always put the bolts/fasteners/etc back into where they would go. It does make your work in the engine heaps easier.
Sorry for your loss Eric. Great vid!
loved this vid man. as a budding mechanic apprentice these provide me with a lot of information that i will hopefully be able to use later on down the line
Aw yeah, I just happen to have a 2001 S10 2.2L. I'm sure this series will be super useful.
This engine has a chain, not a belt. Don't worry, lots more videos in this series to go.
I came for car repair and got some feels too. RIP Ryan. I hope his family is doing alright. What a terrible thing.
Hey Eric thanks for the making the video for us to watch. I know it's a bit of a pain to juggle the job and ensure the camera has a good view too.
Thank you Eric for all the good camera angles and lighting, thumbs up for the work done as well
I did a clutch and slave cylinder on one of these. It was not fun. Especially when the catch cup I was using to bleed the slave cylinder fell and dumped the fluid directly into my mouth.
There's a story about an automotive engineer back in the late 60's when they were just about getting cars easy to work on. The engineer came home and caught his wife in bed with a mechanic. He told his buddies and they've been screwing us back ever since.
Good video! Thanks for taking the time to talk it through.
I know alot of people have said this in the past but we all need to put together and buy Eric a lift. I'm sure his back we thank us in the future.
first let me say I hope you had a good holiday second I am sorry for the loss of your friend.
Now are you working on part 2 . And let me say one thing you have some strength.
Okay take care can't wait for the other video.
Thank you for everything.
nice speech for your friend.. and good video, looking forward to see part 2!
Even tho it sucks that I have to wait for the next video, excellent video. My first car was a 1996 Chevy S10 2.2l 5 speed 2WD. I did just about every repair imaginable to that truck, except pull the motor. Although some of the intake system seems updated on this Sonoma allot seems to be the same. I suppose GM wasn't in the habit of making too many changes in this vintage of mini truck. Sure brings back memories of when I first started turning wrenches in high school. Thanks Eric.
Hey man, just wanted to say that I love the vids, and thanks for taking the time to make them. Good on ya, Eric.
Great video, Eric. The comment about engineers made me smile.
This is the second time I'm watching this video, and this video is the reason I subed in the firstplace. You are a good guy, Ericthecarguy!
I really enjoy your vids man. Could watch them all night! Keep up the great work!
Good series. Was thinking about picking one of these up on CL, but I think I'll pass. The other truck I was looking at was a Mazda B4000. I own a 99 Mazda Protoge 1.6L now and have had nothing but a good experience. The B4000 has good reviews across the board.
Yeah that one of the things that's always kept me from working on cars - all the different tools you need to do anything. And if you don't have the right tool, everything gets 10x harder than it needs to be.
OMG YOu read my mind because I WAS going to ask you where to put the jack under :-D and I am sorry about your friend, that sucks!
Thanks Eric for another useful video. I want to become a mechanic someday but I'm only 16 now. I had an interview for an apprenticeship with mercedes last week. Hopefully I'll get it.
YAY an engine replacement video thanks eric! :) i don't need to replace an engine but its so intresting to see you do it :).
Hey Eric, Shep here. In 2011 I bought a 2000 S10 w/74k and a cracked block for $500.The former owner didn't know about basic car care. She did however keep it clean. A used engine,$1000.Reman,$1600.New from GM,$1800. I went new.I had to remove the head and smash the pistons to rotate the crank to unbolt it from the torque converter!I replaced various other parts(rad, starter, alt, etc)It's a neat truck now but Mr Holzman is right. If you ran the 1/4 mile you'd have to clock it with a calender!
Great work as usual and you have all of the right tools.
Your a great inspiration to me you are a great mechanic and one day i wish to know atleast half of what you know
Sorry for your lost Eric.
At first I was like... Why would someone waste so much time & money on such an old car and less than 2 minutes later I realised why you & the owner are doing this! Well done Eric!
First, sorry for the loss of your friend... very sad.
For the record, whenever I do an engine swap or other access intensive stuff, I bite the bullet and yank the hood first. The extra light & access are always well worth the minor inconvenience. If working outside, be sure to have an appropriate tarp and/or whatever handy for nights, inactive periods and in-climate weather...
Suggestion. Get a hat to attach your camera to. I think it will help with some of the shots. Thank you so much for making this video! I recently swapped my engine in my 98 s10 and your tips and tricks helped me finish it up and also solve the mystery of that AIR system. My 99 engine uses an egr and i thought i just had extra parts. But we figured it out thanks to you!
The heater core on my civic.. when i did the motor swap i went to pull the hose off and krimped it... took a big bolt at my shop rounded the tip of it hammered it in made it as round as i could put RTV around the fitting and used a hose clamp good as new and heat works great lol
Yes we really, really like it when you replace engines
You're a good man Eric. Keep it up.
did this same thing to my 98 Ford Ranger XLT about a month ago. and yes it is/can be a pain to the butt but it was fun
I have a Chevy P/U with this 2.2 and I was absolutely hating the idea that I had to crawl up under this thing and try to get bolts off. Well it turns out that if you get your head at the tail of the transmission and look forward you can see all the bolts and access them all...Use an impact wrench and the bolts zip right out.
Sorry about your friend, Eric. May he rest in peace.
He didn't need to and it would have wasted time. Eric is all about doing things the most efficient way possible.
Beautiful truck. Looks well taken care of.
hey eric i have a 1996 gmc jimmy 4.3 vortec and i have a few tips/tricks for you in the future for you that might make things simpler
when you remove the hood open it up to take those bolts on to the plastic above the hinge than close the hood with a small piece of wood under it than pop them out and you have double the ratchet room than you remove the hood the same way you did
also there should be a few main wiring harness connectors for the engine around the abs unit
sorry to hear the news great video man keep it up
Do you ever use your videos to remind yourself how each part fits back where it belongs? I'm sure you have plenty of expertise, but as an aspiring driveway mechanic I always have to make reminders for myself about what goes where.
Even in vehicles designed for it, death cool can do those. GM 4.3L V6 intake gaskets come to mind... I've even heard of rad caps corroding to nothing over it. As a result, I run traditional green in my dad's 1997 S10... never had an issue since.
bloody hell, imagine having the task of replacing ignition leads on one of these!
I caught myself going " use cameraman Brian!", then It was like "oh.. this is older. right.
"
Eric, your a smashing bloke and im sure ryan knows your doing his truck, i know he also trusts you as he loved your work.
Excellent video as allways mate :-), so enjoy your vids :-)
You are the man Eric
Actually no. I did not diagnose this engine. It was brought to me half taken apart and I was told to put an engine in it. Sorry.
oh my god i remember when i had to replace the starter for my bros 95 sonoma what a pain, took forever to do it. sadly now a rod snapped due to hydrolock so gonna have to get another motor. hopefully with this vid i can get a good idea on how to tackle this
Iv never done this but very thorough and explained everything. Smart man and gave me confidence to try
RIP Ryan.Thankyou for all the cool video's Erock.why not just yank the engine out and then take what you need off of it.
Tears of joy 😭
Been anticipating this video as one of my vehicles is a Chevy S10 with 2.2l manual, identical to the Sonoma, and I hope to keep it until I go where Ryan Coffey is hanging out. Great stuff as usual Eric . Does anyone know the links to the other three videos Eric produced featuring Ryan's Sonoma? Oh yeah ... You can replace the spark plug wires and coils by just removing the right wheel if not replacing the 2.2l !!! Thanks Eric ... Looking forward to the next video
HAVNT finished the vid yet (just passed the intro) and that story is really sad. R.I.P Ryan
Check your Idle Air Control setup and see if it's go good working order. Should be located around the throttle body.
Thats a nice lookin truck truck hope u have fun with the engine pull eric take care man
Great video Eric!
I am sorry to hear about your friend.
hey Eric i am so sorry too hear that
