It’s a good thing there’s a voice saying ‘right’ every few sentences. It really supports the argument.
right?
thats so true and now i am gonna repeat what you said so the algorithm might pick up on me
Some folks just can't shut up. Not even when listening.
It’s a real conversation, not a UA-cam essay. When you’re in real life, having someone affirm what you’re saying is clear is actually helpful
“Yea. Yea. Yea.” 😂
I work in construction and found joy in focusing on the work and making the customer happy, instead of focusing on the payday and the weekend.
You have cracked the secret of life. Hats off to you, brother.
you are an amazing example of doing what you love and not making a job. Staying in the realm of loving what you do not doing it only because you have to make money. there is freedom in that.
The algorithm fed me this. It was yummy. Back to the algorithm
Blue pilled
mmm *louie sucking fingers*
Clever
@@jaymontone how so?
Whatever the first 3 year algorithm youtube had for feeds and suggestions was far better than it is now.
“It takes 25 years to find out you shouldn’t have started down that road” - failed musician here feeling the big OOF. He’s right tho
Louis is so well thought. No fantasy. Just well thought intro/exposion of his experience. Louis would be great as just a public speaker, comedy with a message and a q&a 50/50.
I was lucky to see him in a small theatre last year in Vancouver. Just his standup but he still schooled us.
The thing that Louis is saying beyond just the importance of having integrity is that if you just do the work and you keep true to your voice your audience will grow and love you enough to beat the algorithm for you.
What a distopia.
one of the things that makes louis great is that what he is talks about goes beyond what he is talking about. this is about life, not just comedy
Yeah for sure.
the participatory underlies the propositional 💪
He’s talking about Devotional Service. Working without thinking about and obsessing about the rewards of your actions but dedication to the action itself.
Louis CK: "You don't need to be on social media to be relevant".
4 minutes later: "I have a guy who does all that for me"
Exactly, here is right about what he’s saying but he’s not really answering the question. You have to put out tiktok and shit
Adaptability.
The difference here is that he is letting it spread organically, opposed to the algorithm.
Which in itself is also going to be within the algorithm. Just not as driven as what the algorithm deems "popular."
@@Lauraraksin77 Exactly, if a lot of people share something because they think it's funny, it's going to influence the algorithm and share your content. A lot of people don't realize this form of "AI" is just helping spread what people already generally want to see faster.
Both can be true. It's not like he was unpopular before his instagram
And then he said that guy is doing the opposite of what's _supposed to be done_
Were you even listening or just picked up parts
Social Media is people who know Louie's name and humor and listen to him despite him not knowing anything about Social Media.
Everyone should listen to this.
Agreed! It's not just good advice for comedy but for all fields
I would read however many books this guy may write in the future
Funny thing is I learned about Louis C.K. by the algorithm of UA-cam.
That laugh at the end 😂
Man he’s right on the money. The most important thing is to pay attention and fall in love with your craft, the peripherals are always second. Jiro Ono said the same thing, a sentiment mirrored by a lot of the greats.
I need to cut how much time I spend fucking around on my cell phone… its killing my hunger
"The most important thing is to pay attention and fall in love with your craft." Very well said. The amount of women I've dated who have mentioned how their "ex-bf was literally always in his phone, all the time" I could barely count on 2 hands.
Having enough f00d to eat tends to do that too. Luckily inflation is insane. So a lot of people are gonna be hungry soon. (Sorry just lost income this month. Frusturating as shit.)
@@livewithmeterandnomeasureb1679 best of luck man, that sucks.
@@GavinOCo Thanks. I could use the luck.☮💙🙂🚬😉
Louie is KING!
"Louie" & "Lucky Louie" were so funny, as was "Horace and Pete".
This video was recommended to me because the algorithm knows I love Louie
In his answer is the secret to success and a fulfilling life as an artist (or with any endeavor worth doing). Don't agree? Go read pressfield's The War of Art before you say anything. It's about the work and nothing else. Absolutely. That said, Louie obviously still markets himself and his work, but his main creative focus is on his craft, as yours should be.
That's great advice from a guy who's already known back from the days before social media
Perfectly said. I think people seek out authenticity; if you play to others, you might have short-term success, but none long-term and you’ll hate yourself.
“Get on the algorithm… it’s the only way!” 😂
Before anything, you have to be different, exceptional, memorable.
Then you don’t need to be like everyone else. But if you’re not that special and your work is just ok, then you can follow steps that do take you to the top.
Thanks.
So many people with so little life experience and no stories (and for comedians no jokes.) It sucks. Ive been following comedy for over a decade and its gotten shittier hes right. An opener i know said "too many comedians look down on their own comedy fans" i agree. I do not support those types. Remember at the end of the day comedians are just people and if they suck theyre just gonna bring more suck.
It takes 25 years to find out you should have never started
Such a good point he is making about shaving away any of your personality (and one could argue, authenticity) to fit some AI algorithim. I feel this way as a woman watching all of the makeover videos to look NOT AT ALL LIKE YOU but some cookie cutter Kim Kardashian zombie.
Louis is one of the smartest guys in comedy
I like to think he's talking about Andrew Schulz in the last half of this
Yes he is 😂
Was so happy to get this question in!!! Louie is the best
Chrissy Chaos with the fire TLDR!
i love him saying this direct to chris's face
The ALGORITHUM did good work bringing me this wonderful Louis C.K. advice
I am an artist myself and I have no drive anymore to entertain or do anything to draw attention to myself anymore. The system and this sick cell phone fantasy have pretty much ended my desire to be seen. Were better off as we are anyways without all that crap but I think its sad that all that matters now is the machine.
5:15 called out A LOT of people
There is nothing more ironic than getting youtube algorithm recommend me this.
Louis: don’t use social media, just be famous already like me
Louis CK is surprisingly insightful. He's not the kinda guy you'd think would know about any of this. I expected more "basic" tips.
Funny that artists ended up trying to please a computer.
Glad that he's continuing doing stand-up rather than going for that sweet sitcom deal and lean back. He's not quite Bill Burr or Bill Hicks, he lacks the anger, but that's fine, they can't all be angry at society.
Forced to post constantly equals quantity over quality
"Yeah"..."yeah"..."yeah"..."right"..."yeah"..."yeah"..."hahaha, I agree"...😅😅😅
Really feeling this in my own career as a graphic artist.
Louis doesn't get it
@@humanoid9787
He’s saying that marketing and comedy are different skills.
@@kristofaxelson5088 no he’s saying you don’t need to market yourself online today to make it as an artist. He’s saying it as someone who has never been a struggling artist in a post social media world and doesn’t really know what he’s talking about. Love Louis but he’s plain wrong here
Me too Jason. It’s a fucked up, fascinating, unfair, astounding time to be a creative professional.
Yeah. Okay. Right. Yeah. Yeah. Uh-huh. Okay. Yeah. Right. Yeah. Yeah. Right. Yeah.
"they say it takes 20 years to become an overnight success. what they dont tell you is that it also takes 20 years to become a bitter, resentful failure. and you dont know which one youre gonna be until like, the night before"

@@tamhameenie3136 on his podcast idk which episodes one of the earlier ones i think
@@OGRE_HATES_NERDS Thanks!
The algorithm is fundemenatlly an equation that uses uses aggregate signals of human behaviour. It isnt some mystical computer intelligence. Its basically the same as watching ticket sales to your show, its just across a broader demographic, and uses a wider set of inputs.
Genius observation
Amazing advice. Thanks Louis.
The question at 4:50 was such a good thing to ask a guy like Louis
6:00 ...woulda been hilarious if Louis said, "assassinations of big tech executives?" 😂😂😂
I'm so amazed that he understands concepts like these so well. Not many untrained people can be so coherent about a subject they have no training in. Not a hater but imagine how Joe Rogan would have approached this question. Maybe along the same lines but not with so much depth as shown here. Respect
Yes, but to be fair you picked one of the worst comedians out there. We wouldn't expect Joe to have a deep take seeing as his comedy style is to shout really loud and if that doesn't work double the loudness.
I can tell you've only listened to clips of him or non serious fucking around episodes. That guy is just as articulate as louis here
When he is talking about the algorithm he sounds like someone who came up in a different time and is now already successful, the rules don't apply to him.
„yeah“
Is this taken from Chris DiStefano's podcast? Thought I heard his voice in there saying "right" every 5 seconds. Was thrown off by the audience applause though...?
Imagine Louie asking George Carlin about this new Internet thing that people are forced to use to promote themselves. I would expect Carlin to give you an outdated advice too :)
3:47 dude that crowd work comment was refreshing. Schulz did crowd work, and everybody copied, and the resulting clips were awful
I think a big piece of it is crowdwork fits in the small bite category, can pull them out while regularly touring without exposing parts of your main act while putting it together
@@theempirestrikesback nah, good comedians can condense jokes into 60 sec format. These up and comers are trying to steal a winning formula, but they don't even have the ingredients
Again, I think it's mostly about not exposing the jokes from the hour
@@theempirestrikesback but you don't disagree on the resulting clips being awful, right?
@@dr.terrible I agree the majority of the short clips are weak. On the flip side, I think it's garbage too slowly dribble out half your jokes so when I see you live/ watch the special the first time, I already know it
"Yeah"
The irony of being brought here by the algorithm.
AI will turn all comedians into Brendan Shaub and all comedy into the Gringo Papi
God those guys are so fuckin unfunny.
The algorithm was invented by Al Gore, its the Al-Gore-ithm. He invented the internet along with Soulja Boy.
Love Louis, but that's not how algorithms work. It's not just a 'computer', or just an 'ai'...yes, they are all some sort of equations, but the variables are actual people. So the algorithms that you are trying to fit are directly affected by what people want. Regardless of him not understanding how those thing work, I think he is right about what he said - we should all focus on what we do and what we get out of it in a spiritual, personal way, not seeking for attention.
That darned algorithm.
fukn gem of t he comedy world. heed his words
Deep guy. He’s been there and back again. Love to have a coffee with him.
Careful…there’s a more-than-50% chance he’ll show you his junk…
You like your coffee black and white ?
I was there before an equation was even written
Honestly it's exactly the same with the music industry. Recycled rappers built on virality. Bands have more people in them and their work takes longer. Albums are dead. And good modern music is scarce.
He's talking about Schulz LoL
It's a funny thing, getting advice on things 99,9% of the people never get famous for. I can guarentee you there's thousands of Louis CK's out there that just aren't famous.
Thanks to the algorithm for bringing me to this video
this is the first time ive heard from chris destefano in the last two years or so... but apparently hes super famous now or something?
Who are the laughing hyenas in the background with no self awareness
Big ooof on this one. Louis is missing that the “algorithm” is based entirely on human behavior in a feedback loop. Pleasing the algorithm IS pleasing human audiences. And you can’t deny the success and financial benefits that come from posting on various social channels
I do think there is a difference here. It's one thing to make art that you want to make and people find it which over time influences the algorithm. That's completely different from "in going to tailor the art to be picked up by the algorithm to get it in front of people". I think the difference between those two approaches is what Louie is getting at
took the road less traveled an encountered a crap shoot at the end
Amazes me how the other guy has absolutely nothing to say yet keeps interrupting Louie all of the times
yall really forget how conversations without keyboards work?
When people who don’t really understand computers but still proceed to philosophize about the uses and misuses of computers just come across as old pompous and dumb. And this is coming from an older guy who doesn’t understand computers. Just Flow with the times people and do what works for you. Louis came up in a different universe. No more no less. He needs to let go a little and wisen up
"Comics should be starved for attention and feeling alone."
Stay hungry, my friends.
Clickbait has always been an alluring thumbnail masking a lame video/story
great artists alawys go agaist the grain.
Pure truth
Stop worshiping the algorithm
Keep your desires light and enjoy the journey, not the destination.
The point is that the specialness of material comes from a human being. Being a slave to a computer algorithm is pretty damn scary.
Nobody yet diagnosed it as well, as far as I know.
Another weird and related thing is this whole aspect of posting other people's content. I don't understand how that's even allowed, I would think this would be subject to copyright infringement as it's essentially stealing money from the original creator.
That big laugh at the end, Louis is the goat for me, but he has to consider that there were people who did went big with only 5-10 years of doing stand up
what do you mean?
Artists make art. Narcissistic children make UA-cam videos about their “art.” It doesn’t take much to figure out what they’re truly interested in. For example; people who like camping go camping. Narcissistic children make “bushcraft” videos. The most popular tell; anyone who posts a picture of their “art” with their brushes, pens, tools &c “casually” placed in frame so it makes a nice instagram post isn’t an artist. They’re a narcissistic child who craves attention. Never hesitate to call them out on it.
Here's my bump for the algi!
so funny: this guy's posting a ripped off clip of CK talking about the algorithm, and the description is flooded with hashtags for a bunch of popular comics unrelated to this clip.
classic.
Stick to leaving comments and leave the funniness to Louis pal

Wow! That guy is a circus elephant, man. "I'm forced to follow the circus wherever it goes because they always chain me to this stick, that I can't possibly pull out of the ground. I know, I tried."
it isn't ironic that the word 'algorithm' is measured in within the algorithm ?
The Arabs invented Algebra and Algorithms. As to your point, they have to, I bet vids that mention the algorithm too much get docked.
The algorithm is shaped by what we input into big data….
The algorithm displays a reflection of everyone else…
Which is good in ways to know stuff you’d otherwise not be aware of.
It’s a dialectic!
Along the same lines tho, Louie would be proud of my son who just doesn’t want to follow blindly. He has a mind of his own but open to learn kinda crazy fast (sign of reading at 2, can manage social interactions, play piano to fit mood….) I’ve been picking up on nudges to consider private school or just not public. The system is mostly stifling - spirit crushing - not fitting for our current era of specialization.
But my kid is just 3 so maybe I won’t sweat about it too much.
An algorithm brought me here 😂
“I am a well-known name and don’t have to be a slave to the algorithm because I’ve been doing this for 30+ years. So you shouldn’t either regardless of how the system works now.” -Louis, approximately
If I don't make it in 25 years, I'll be almost dead so no biggie.
Everyone is an AI expert now.
Quality not quantity.
If Louis had killed himself in the 24th year most of us would've never heard of him.
Dark. You mean 'his' 24th year? He needed time to hone.....
I agree with everything he said. The problem is: he made his career in a time that social media wasn't a thing. He did what his generation had to do. By the time social media came he already had established a solid base.
So would someone that's starting today actually be able to make a flourishing career defying the algorithm?
be undeniable.
