HIMYM makes up for poor comic writing with good chemistry between the cast. I never laugh at it but still enjoy it. To me shows like Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half were way bigger culprits of what Louie is referring to.
" with good chemistry between the cast" god the estrogen is pouring out of you. These are lame boring people, you wanna see that kind of chemistry just go to an Ikea on a saturday morning.
Louis' Great Shunning... judging by the special he just put out, that global level of humiliation gave him wolverine bones. He's the greatest of all time, now
Man i saw him live during this last tour and it was the greatest standup performance ive ever seen. He controlled the energy of the room, you could feel it.
The thing is, there are few writers who are capable of putting out entire (or almost entire) episodes of comedy from their head; even Louis took a lot of time to write a shorter season. HIMYM was a fun for what it was like Frasier - it's a farce based on familiar characters like a warm blanket; when it's a show like Louie, you don't know where the jokes lead to. It's also a risk because you're putting it mostly on one person's brain to make the show; HIMYM was good early on but hit a nosedive because writers and scripts changed little by little instead of just one creator shitting the bed.
God it bugs me listening to old clips of Louis and Jim yammering back and forth under the pretext of being friends, knowing that Louis' entire career got destroyed basically for engaging in the EXACT same kind of perverted fetishes that Jim does in his private life, but simply not being as vocal about it. Meanwhile, Jim won't have Louis on his show anymore; he won't even address it or utter a SINGLE word in Louis' defence. Middle of the road Jimmy sure knows the art of opportunism.
Mikey G - What makes you think Louis didn't have consent? When you ask someone "Are you ok if I..." and they say "Yeah," that's called consent. Louis is in the exact same camp as Jim in terms of being a weird fetishist, yet Jim hasn't had him on his show since the allegations broke, which is infuriating. The way it's looking now, if Louis ever comes back again, it will most likely be 25 years later like Pee-wee Herman.
Brakathor uh, several of them said he didn't, and some of the ones who did said yes initially and then got freaked out and tried to leave, which he then blocked them from doing. Do your fucking homework, jackass. Consent can also be revoked at any time, too. I'm sorry you don't understand the ins and outs of consent.
Yeah, Louie went with the mature reaction and his date dried up like a….date. His point stands though, what does she want him to do? Hit minors? She cognitively knows he did the right thing but her biology doesn’t like it, sort of like when a man cries in front of his lady, she will say it makes her happy to feel so close and open with him, but inevitably she dries up because it’s seen as “pathetic” for a man to cry no matter what people say about it being a good thing.

One of the first examples I saw of what they're speaking of was Clerks. Very astute and flowing conversation. It was great, and to absorb everything being said and going on took more than one viewing. One of the first examples of the awful side of the same coin was Gilmore Girls. No words ever out of place, quick snappy comebacks, but to the point of being completely scripted and unreal. Now, it's an anomaly when a script isn't written in this fashion.

How I met your mother is comedy junk food. And everyone likes junk food. Even the most refined palates like a cheese burger from time to time. “Louis” is comedy gastronomy. OMG i have had the same opinion on nph. everything he says has a wink and a nod to the audience. "can you believe it's me, doogy howser, saying this?!?!"
I don't agree that NPH isn't funny, but this conversation totally sheds a light on the difference between shows like Family Guy, HIMYM, and Two and a Half Men; and Lucky Louie, South Park, and (dare I say?) SNL.
Total vapid nonsense - along with Big Bang, Two Broke Girls, that Charlie Sheen show... horrible wastes of time that are pushed on network as “funny” and “comedy”. Filler GARBAGE. I’ve been forced to watch several eps of Big Bang at realitives houses, and Jesus Christ, they weren’t funny in about the slightest.
I love Louis' comedy and shows, but I really dislike this instinct to pit different artists or styles against one another. Was the world of the show Harris was on elevated in its reality and a little glossy? Sure, but that's the style they chose. They weren't even aiming at the thing Louis is saying he prefers. And guess what? They made a ton of people laugh out loud with their approach to their show. Louis knows that laughs from an audience are honest. Comedy is like a sport. If the audience laughs that means you scored. It doesn't matter if you ran the ball in or threw it. You scored. And no kvetching from someone who thinks you should have scored a different way matters at all. I also find the constant complaints that "people don't talk that way!" to be of very little interest to me. Have you ever listened to the way people actually talk most of the time? It's BORING. Every show is going to be written for something approaching hyper realism or something very unrealistic or something in between, and these are all valid approaches to the work. If you claim that only one approach is valid then you are boring in your approach to art. You do you. Hopefully you will be successful, but other people will be too.
I need people to stop being emotional sheep and think. (No offense) Some people are into that. If a person, no matter the relationship to me, was attracted to their coworker and maybe had a history of flirting and what not, if that person ask for permission to take it further, I can’t see how that could be offensive. The answer is yes or no. It sounds like he respected their answer. I wish people would use common sense and not emotions all the time. But I guess that’s the simple minded estrogen world we live in. This thread is no longer worth my time.
Louie ducked up when he made 4million off Horance & Pete without any network help. He was showing ppl how to break away from that old system. I believe he pissed off some powerful ppl & he had to go. Considering he hasn't done anything any worse than 95% of other ppl in showbiz & what he did was ask permission!
One of the greatest comedians ever, and we're being denied his talent because of some opportunistic women and some mindless keyboard warriors, it's tragic.
I think they're both funny in their own ways. I didn't watch himym much, But NPH himself is pretty funny. Also Louis is Hilarious as well, sorta surpsied he wouldn't find nph funny one way or another, but it's subjective I suppose. Seems he got caught doing something a little unsavory. Well, he apologized...and I think he's smart enough to realize his mistakes. I don't think he should be done forever. I'm sure he'll be around soon enough. Time seems to heal all wounds, and create indifference as well.
Theres definitely a science to Larry Davids non-writing on Curb Your Enthusiasm. But what Larry demonstrates is the standard comedy writing science that was being talked about isn't a universal law. Plus another point is if you agree theres such a thing as 'comedic timing' then you're acknowledging theres a science and formula behind why its an actual thing.
I think most of the comments for this are missing the point of this video. Whether or not you liked NPH as an actor (I for one think he's incredibly charismatic), the problem CK has with most sitcoms is their lack of sincerity and realistic dialogue, which he believes has to do with most people who write comedy as a "craft" not actually being funny. I don't think that he's inherently saying he's better- that's not really his point. He made his show to give a contrast to most of what he'd been seeing on tv. And you know what? Since Louie came out, a lot of tv shows have gotten better in terms of sincerity and attention to detail.
@@bigrobfitness7953 How does that make it strange? And what does that have to do with anything? Big Rob, don't tell me you're a repressed gay man. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

The bully episode ended poorly, like a lot of Louis’ stream-of-consciousness episodes, where the plot trails off and/or he’s simply rejected somehow and goes home. It’s unique compared to the whiz-bang of sitcoms, but it also made that show worse each season by draining the enthusiasm.
Completely agree. Louis is a much better standup writer, one of the best, but his show(s) lacked something and almost always fizzled out. Love his comedy tho and hope he comes back.
@@kuziokundera it's his style, he doesn't give us what we want, he has his own idea what he wants to say to us and it's not always fully satisfying. It's for adults and not being satisfied by movie or the show ending is fine for adults.
@Dmitry Kim Every subplot eventually began to end like that though. If he didn’t know what to do with a character, he killed them off. If he didn’t know what to do with himself he got rejected and went home. It wasn’t the depression in the writing. It was the laziness. The rhythm and gallop of the first two seasons have way to the dullness of the third and fourth. Miss Louis... I mean come on. He asked. Lol
Yea but didn't everyone say no and then he did it anyway and came into a pot plant. That's gross and weird!

Chappell just dropped a new show.
The world did Louis a favor with they shunned him.
As Patrice once said, Norton takes the shape of whatever container you pour him into.
Uh...you realize that Norton gets consent for his fetishes, right?
Brakathor you are the worst. You know exactly what you're doing and you know it's wrong, yet here you fucking are.
Oh man, I was on a date once and got picked on by some young kids. That episode hit too close to home.

I like how ridiculous Neil Patrick Harris acts in how I met your mother. I don’t want a silly sitcom to be immersive all the time. Barney is just a chaotic force in the show and that’s what makes him funny. But I see his point
I agree. It’s like eating a meal from Taco Bell as opposed to a nice Mexican meal. Both have their place and can hit just right. I love Louis, but he can be a bit of a snob when it comes to comedy.
@teledoink exactly. I enjoy both Neil patrick harris's comedy as well as Norm Macdonalds comedy. Their humor is wildely different, and i definitely like Norm comedy more in general, but both of their comedic styles make me laugh.
He's not a "chaotice force". You just think bad writing + photogenic homosexual = recipe
Look at all the dislikes from all the writers and Neil Patrick Harris fans 💀
One of the first examples I saw of what they're speaking of was Clerks. Very astute and flowing conversation. It was great, and to absorb everything being said and going on took more than one viewing. One of the first examples of the awful side of the same coin was Gilmore Girls. No words ever out of place, quick snappy comebacks, but to the point of being completely scripted and unreal. Now, it's an anomaly when a script isn't written in this fashion.
I would say there are exceptions to this that are genuinely brilliant and well executed. Letterkenny and House being two
Why so many dislikes? This is actually very interesting to listen, there's a lot of truth in it
I hope it's people who are annoyed that the clip is cut off so early.

How I met your mother is comedy junk food. And everyone likes junk food. Even the most refined palates like a cheese burger from time to time. “Louis” is comedy gastronomy. For the refined palate it is a masterpiece, but some people just can’t handle the idea of eating duck liver or bone marrow.
I like Louis, and I also like HIMYM.
Something must be wrong when a Nickelodeon sitcom (Drake and Josh) is genuinely more entertaining than most modern “grown-up” sitcoms.

The name Keith always cracks me up. We use to use it in high school as an insult. Your mate trips on something …. "watch were your going Keith"
Wow its still going huh. Im going back 15 years ago and in Australia. It was just really me and another mate calling each other and other people keith. He got it from his 3 brothers who use to call their old man keith. When was he hilarious?
In his gay show or the other gay show he is in. St Fu!
Louie: “there’s no method to doing comedy. Anyway, here’s my method.”
Love Louie. But he's wrong. NPH is great in what he does. Just different style
100% agreement about Neil P. Harris.
Neil Patrick Harris is funny in Harold and Kumar, but it's because of the writing.
The detriment of popular sitcoms is that they must have and maintain mass appeal.

He asked for permission. What a monster 😑😒
Just by the way, Pamela Adlon, the woman Louis mentions in the story, is Spinelli from Disney's fantastic children's show _Recess_
I've copped this comment section. Copped!

Totally agree with what Louie was saying, but let’s not get crazy here. We all saw Keith’s off the cuff performance at the Patrice roast. 😂
Eventually giving way to Horace and Pete which was a totally self-indulgent write-off of everything and everyone.
