Ayy, I worked on this! I was one of only 5 animators on The Tenth Planet. (we expanded to nearly 20 for Moonbase). Thanks for the kind words and pointing out all the meticulous lengths we to to keep things as accurate as possible. What an experience it was!

The Tenth planet style of animation is my favorite of the Dr Who recreations. The rest i've seen look cheap and nasty. Your animation looks like how an adaptation should.

Ive Been an doctor who fan for less then 2 years. My curiosity brought me to classic who moderately quickly. I really enjoyed what ive seen of the 3rd and 4th doctors so there the ones ive seen most of, but hearing about what happened with a lot of the black and white era broke my heart, there important parts of the history, hearing 10th planet was one of them did not make me happy. but i learned about the animation because of that. If there was any lost episode most deserving of it its this one.

@@thevfxmancolorizationvfxex4051 Having seen some fan attempts at 3D CGI recons, I think I'd need a lot more convincing they're a good idea. It's difficult to see how doing it well could be afforded. These animations have to be made within the constraints of the money made in home media sales. They also have to make a profit on top of it.
If the cost of the 2D work is already close to bank breaking, I think that stepping up to full 3D (there's some 3D inclusions in the animations already) may be a leap too far. This is especially the case if they still want to convince fans they're legitimate recreations at the same time. You do get the moaning purists who throw a tantrum if they so much as move a background extra out of place! I've heard a lot of belly aching from those types concerning The Macra Terror these past few weeks (Which I think has been brilliantly done).
If the Beeb invested proper money in the projects then the quality levels would go up sharply. I wouldn't hold my breath on that though.

    • @CountScarlioni
      @CountScarlioni 5 років тому

@@thevfxmancolorizationvfxex4051 Interesting example. I'd be willing to give something like that a go but the art style is intensely off-putting for me (not that the art style would have to look like that of course). I guess it still comes down to the cost per hour for the animators working on the project. If it can be brought close to that for 2D, then it might well have a shot at succeeding.

The question should be, "What episode wouldn't you want animated?" and I don't have an answer for that. The ones I really want the most are The Savages (Steven's last story), The Highlanders (Jamie's first story) and The Wheel in Space (Zoe's first story), but as I've said before, I want them all. Until I ran across this wonderful channel, I hadn't realised there were any other animations besides Power of the Daleks and Shada, so now I have all the stories with animated episodes except The Moonbase - and that's next on my list to order!

  • @jezt42

  • @CountScarlioni
    @CountScarlioni 5 років тому +2

    A very interesting side-by-side comparison.
Evil of the Daleks would be my pick for animation. If they go a little off-piste like The Macra Terror they could make it look far more epic than the original production could ever have hoped to achieve.
It'd be a huge and expensive project though, so I have doubts that it would ever happen.

Hey Josh! I know a few details about the Tenth Planet Episode 4 that may have been missing from the video, the opening scene isn't the same as the ending scene from Episode 3, if you read the camera script and look at the telesnaps you can see how it could've originally looked, David Gillispie-Pratt did do a video about this, so you should check it out! For the ending shots filmed on 8mm, the shot of the Docto may have been when he yells "Hey Barclay do not help them!" and the up close shot of Ben is when he says "It's fallen to bits!" and finally, the shot of Ben afterwards is him saying "Hey, look." which a lot of reconstructions get wrong and place it in the "The Doctor and Polly!" scene. Great video though!

  • @pjgathergood6987

Another great video Josh - I had watched it when you first uploaded it, but watched 'The Tenth Planet' last night (finally, in all my decades as a Who fan it's the first time I'd seen it!) and revisited this video afterwards to see how the animation compared to the original.
The serial itself I really enjoyed. I loved this early, 'basic' version of the Cybermen - in some ways I found them actually creepier than later incarnations, especially with their weird speech patterns which could have resulted hilarious but for the most part comes off as really unnerving. I also felt that these early Cybermen weren't as overtly 'evil' as such, more that they were simply following their emotionless (albeit twisted) logic to save themselves. The story is mercifully four parts long - as much as I love the classic series' longer 'slow burner' format over NuWho's "all crammed into one episode" approach - some of those Hartnell and Troughton stories can occasionally be a bit challenging to get through in terms of sheer length. Thankfully temptation was resisted to stretch this one beyond a four-parter and it benefits from it as a result.
Previously I've watched 'The Invasion' with the two animated episodes, and whilst that does a reasonable job reconstructing the lost originals, the 'Tenth Planet' seems to stick to the (surviving) source far closer, budget allowing. Out of all of the missing episodes, rediscovering the missing final episode of the serial is surely the holy grail to most 'Who' fans - maybe one day, but sadly time is passing (and film is decomposing)...

I feel like this should have been released in 2008 to mark 45 years of doctor who and the 100th birthday of William Hartnell or they could have done this in 2000 marking the silver anniversary of his death, a tribute with Anneke Wills, Verity lambert etc. If that did happen maybe the underwater menace would get animated as the moonbase is released in 2013, while the crusade gets a DVD recon release.

  • @brunochambre
    @brunochambre 3 роки тому +1

Thanks for the video. I do need to clarify though a little information. The wording " hand cranked" is not completely accurate. In the 60s home movies were made on a format called Standard 8. The cameras used a 25 foot role of 16mm film . You shot 2 minutes of footage and then had to reload it to shoot on the 2nd side of the film. ( which was cut and spliced in the lab)
Standard speed was 16 FPS while TV was 25 frames per second. This created the flashing bands you see. The cameras were spring driven . You wound them up and then shot until the spring wound down. There were slight fluctuations in the shooting speed and sound had to be added later by getting a magnetic strip glued to the edge of the film after editing. In the late 60s battery operated Super Eight Cartridge cameras became the norm and could shoot at 16fps or 24fps. But again because of the speed difference , shooting off a TV screen creating bands because you were seeing the space were the image formed on the cathode ray screen.

I’d like the Underwater Menace next because that was supposed to be animated. Plus I just love the story.
    Following that:
The Savages - So that story can get the recognition it deserves.
The Faceless Ones - A Fantastic story.
The Celestial Toymaker - It’s very visual. The recon is hard to watch.
Fury from the Deep - This story is great.
The Wheel in Space - This one is obviously the next one. It’s a good story but not the best.
The Highlanders - Jamie’s first adventure.
The Crusade - To get it the final half complete done.
The Myth Makers - Vickis final story and it’s a story that needs more love.
The Evil of the Daleks - I don’t like the first half but the 2nd half is great. It’s a shame it’s not episode 6 or whichever part with the playing Daleks we don’t have surviving imo.
The Space Pirates - Maybe as an Animation this story will be more watchable.
The Web of Fear - Needs to be done and would be quick and full the gap until that thief returns the episode...if ever.
The Abominable Snowmen - To go in a box set with Web of Fear. I can’t remember much from the story
The Smugglers - To complete the Ben and Polly Era.
Galaxy 4 - nice overlooked story
The Massacre - Boring story but it’s then done.
And that leaves 2 popular and long stories for the final 2 animations
I’d say Marco Polo first so we can end with Daleks Master Plan. I’d have mission as that recreation thing

Tenth Planet Episode 4 is one of those frustrating episodes that literally disappeared rather than being destroyed. That's not to say that it wasn't, but it wasn't supposed to be, and may have wound up in a mislabelled canister. This is so infuriating because it COULD be out there, but if it wound up unintentionally destroyed, we'll never know.

Having been a fan since 1968, although I did see the Cybermen in 'The Tenth Planet' in 1966, and they scared the bejeezus out of me (I was three at the time), I'd love to see this rather complex Dalek story, of which only one episode, and tiny fragments remain.

Out of curiosity, what's your take on the recreated sequences made in Twice Upon a Time?

Seeing how you've compared Macra Terror, Wheel in Space and now Tenth Planet, what's the next animation comparison you'll be doing? Power?

For me, the animation works better than the reconstruction, this is one of my personal favourites, Mainly for both Hartnell and the Cybermen, who have never been creepier, in my opinion. I would love to see Part 4 returned to the archives.

I very much doubt that anything was filmed on 'a hand-cranked 8mm camera'.
Hand-cranked cine cameras were long gone by the 1960s, and I would be surprised if any were built for 8mm film, which was a dedicated home-movie gauge.
This footage will have been made on a hand WOUND spring-driven camera, with a fixed frame-rate.
The spring is not wound during filming. It is wound-up at the start, and not again until the shot is over.

You’d think they would have kept at least his last episode.

The animation looks very good, but I wish they had used the surviving footage of the regeneration.

It would make so much sense for them to do so, plus it could even make them save money on animation so they wouldn’t have to animate a scene they already have in the archives!

Overall I think they did a good job with the animation of episode 4, is it Pixar Quality no but remember they can't afford that, but their animation has gotten better since then I must say no doubt, I wouldn't mind seeing a color version of this story

As much as I feel many fans would want to see it, I highly doubt the BBC will restore The Daleks Master Plan using such animated means. I think its length would be too cost prohibitive.

The Reign of Terror sadly doesn't have any telesnaps surviving, so can't compare them!
I might do The Faceless Ones one day :)
