Keys of Marinus is one of my favourite first Doctor adventures. Love the format of it, having each episode it’s own little sub-Adventure in a different style, brining it all together in the end.
The Keys of Marinus - it's an epic and really feels like it's 6 mini stories packed in. Also it's full of adventure that none of the adventurers actually want to be in, they all want to return to the TARDIS and leave. The Rescue and The Romans - Packaged together on VHS and because of that I think of them always being together. I love in the Rescue it shows illustrates the Doctor having had unseen adventures before Babs and Ian joined them. I agree with you on The War Machines and The Time Meddler. The Daleks' Master Plan seems like it should be a season all on its own like the Key to Time, it's epic in ways that we don't ever see again except maybe during the Moff years of the interconnected story arcs. Honourable mentions: the other Dalek stories; Daleks. Invasion and Chase. They've all got flaws, mostly from padding, but all have epic senses of scale, coverage and contribution to the universe.
I like that The Gunfighters gets a placing AND an honourable mention too, it's just that good! Another great vid Josh, lovely to see your appreciation for this era, it's easily my favourite. Agree heartily with all your choices. Every one a classic. Choosing favs is impossible I love them all, however.. 1. The Myth Makers 2. The Smugglers 3. The Keys of Marinus 4. The Reign of Terror 5. The Crusade 6. The Space Museum
My absolute favourite is "The Massacre of St. Bartholomew's Eve". Hartnell gets to play the bad guy (and play him well). Steven absolutely shines as he carries this story. The themes of religious persecution and politics are not dumbed-down for the audience and the guest characters (and actors) are absolutely brilliant. The icing on the cake is the Doctor's speech to himself when he's finally alone in the TARDIS.
The Time Meddler is wonderful. I'm surprised my DVD isn't worn out from all the re-watching. Its such a shame we couldn't get Marco Polo in colour because those costumes were gorgeous, and it would have been nice to see them in all their glory. I'm hard pressed to pick my favourite stories because, just like every incarnation of the Doctor, they all have great moments. If I had to choose, I think: 1. The Time Meddler 2. The Dalek Invasion of Earth 3. The Savages (where's my animation of this, BBC? C'mon, get your bloody act together!) 4. The Tenth Planet 5. The Celestial Toymaker 6. The War Machines
Great choices, glad to see Marco Polo getting some much-deserved appreciation - it's the story I'd most like to see returned. My favourite first Doctor story is The Daleks. Sure, it's not perfect, but it's the perfect way to establish the Daleks, and it ensured the future of the programme.
60s Doctor Who is my favourite television ever! My top 5 First Doctor Stories is 1 Marco Polo 2 The Aztecs 3 The Daleks 4 The Tenth planet 5 The Daleks Master plan Marco Polo is literally one the best things ever made.
Great video. My favourites are: 1 - The Daleks 2 - The Tenth Planet 3 - The Time Meddler 4 - The Dalek Invasion of Earth 5 - The Keys of Marinus 6 - The Aztecs Special mention to the first episode of An Unearthly Child - possibly one of the best episodes of Doctor Who in the entire series.
A fantastic review of some very interesting Hartnell stories. My top five would have to be 1. Daleks Master plan 2. An Ubearthly Child (All four episodes ) 3. Dalek Invasion of earth 4. The Web Planet 5. The Aztecs It's just so good to see William Hartnell getting so much respect these days as we owe him so much. 👍😎
Plus, Master plan features the Brigadier before he was the Brigadier. Yes, Nicolas Courtney was in a First Doctor story. If we do ever get a recovery or animation, it would have to be like Gone With the Wind, the Invasion or the War Games. Split in half over two discs.
Splendid work as always, young man! Hmm mm! Indeed. Yes, indeed! To offer another ranking into the mix: 6. The Edge of Destruction 5. The Crusade 4. The Dalek Invasion of Earth 3. The Aztecs 2. The War Machines 1. The Time Meddler
Daleks' Masterplan is brilliant. The story does meander and it is slightly uneven, but the concept, acting, direction...its just brilliant. The Daleks are the most ruthless they had ever been, along with great voice modulation and even having sinister, sneaky personalities. The delegates each having their own unique alien qualities (remember when they were clapping backwards, and Chen's long fingers and odd writing style). Its attention to detail the show had never seen before. The stakes were so high and the cost of winning was heartbreaking. I'm sure the Time Destructor was responsible for that Doctor's body wearing a bit thin. It was a very dark era in the story terms
Definitely DMP, it was ahead of its time. Two companions die, returning characters of the Monk and Daleks, and it’s just epic with the conclusion using the time destructor.
To be honest The Web Planet is my favourite Hartnell story. I've seen quite a decent amount of his episodes and for whatever reason this engaged me the most. I wasn't bored for a second. I quite like the idea of the story, the ridiculous looking creatures are charming to me and it has a lovely surreal feeling to it. It's just fun.
He’s my favourite doctor too .... I can still remember watching the first episode at the age of 7, mind blowing concepts ... time travel, spatial weirdness .... then the DALEKS!! I can remember going back to school on the Monday after the DALEKS reveal, all the kids running round shouting EXTERMINATE!! I have a soft spot for the Voords as a “monster”, they scared me more than the DALEKS
Another fantastic video Josh!! To be honest Hartnell ranks somewhere in the middle for me as "best doctor"..but there are some stellar stories. My top 5: #5- The Gun fighters - I have to agree with you about this one...it's silly but it's comedy moments make want to watch this one over and over again. Plus Steven and Dodo playing that song is enough to make me burst out laughing. 4. The Space Museum - Overall this isn't that great a story...but I feel that episode 1 is possibly the greatest episode of any Doctor Who story..the cliff hanger is brilliant. .too bad the rest of the story isn't as strong. #3 - The Keys of Marinas - number 3 was a toss up between Marco Polo and this story...but the reason I like this one better is because the way the story is written. ..it's like you get 4 separate story adventures in one ..while I believe Marco Polo is fantastic and is the one story I'd love to see found again. ..Keys keeps my attention through the whole story. #2 - The Dalek Invasion of Earth- This is classic Who..the Doctor vs the Daleks. .what more could you want...plus the departure of Susan is heart breaking. ..and has always left a question in my head...when will they finally write a new Doctor Who story where he/she returns to Earth to visit Susan...after all he says he will return. #1 - The Daleks - The introductory story of the Daleks has always been my favorite story from the Hartnell era...so many things happening here. ..the introduction of the Thalls. .you get Hartnell's first showing of his greedy side as he lies about the mercury switch...Barbra and Ian are still bitter about being kidnapped. ..all this within a brilliant Daleks story. Oh and by the way my favorite Doctor is #2 .
1) Daleks Masterplan 2) Time Meddler 3) Reign of Terror 4) Gunfighters 5) War Machines 6) Savages 7) The sensorites Really wanted to out in the Daleks or Planet of the giants and Marco Polo or the Massacre. All really great stories.
Here my top 6 (from what I’ve seen): 6. An Unearthly Child 5. The Space Museum 4. The Dalek Invasion Of Earth 3. Keys Of Marinus 2. The Aztecs 1. The War Machines
I too love The Gunfighters. Even the bad singing. And how the Doctor rolls the dice on wild western dentistry. I'd've hit the randomiser on the TARDIS and hoped for the best.
And to answer the question, my top five, unorthodox I know... the keys of marinus The daleks master plan The dead planet The web planet The chase I'm a huge fan of TKoM for same reason as Josh mentions 're TDMP. That it's so wide ranging, a vast story. KOM is one of the few times where the story based on an alien planet isn't confined to one tiny area. Instead different regions of marinus are shown. :)
Very good choices. The Gunfighters is okay for what it is, and I do agree that it's fun. The Romans is also a pretty fun story and is wildly underrated. Just know you have to do one of these for each of the Doctors now.
I heartily agree that THE DALEKS' MASTERPLAN is one of the best ever stories and that it should be animated. Something else we can agree on is Billy Hartnell - had the Doctor been a real person and not a fictional character, he would have been Billy for sure. :)
Top 6 in no particular order: The Daleks, Keys of Marinus, Web Planet, Romans, Dalek Invasion of Earth and Time Meddler. Honourable mention to Space Museum (1). I am lucky to have only missed seeing one episode of Dr Who ever on first broadcast and that was the last episode of The Chase although at least I had the Century 21 mini album of the episode.
29. The Massacre 28. The Rescue 27. The Myth Makers 26. The Tenth Planet 25. The Savages 24. The Web Planet 23. Galaxy 4 22. The Time Meddler 21. The Crusade 20. The Reign of Terri 19. The Aztecs 18. The Edge of Destruction 17. The Smugglers 16. The Gunfighters 15. The Ark 14. The Sensorites 13. Mission to the Unknown 12. The Space Museum 11. The War Machines 10. The Keys of Marinus 9. An Unearthly Child 8. Marco Polo 7. Planet of Giants 6. The Dalek Invasion of Earth 5. The Celestial Toymaker 4. The Romans 3. The Daleks 2. The Daleks Master Plan 1. The Chase
Ffs, I go so many months without thinking about the ballad of the last chance saloon, and then I get reminded of it, and it's stuck in my head for a week! My favourite 1st doctor story can only ever be The Dalek Invasion of Earth. I dont even think it's the best written, and it's certainly not the best directed. But it's the story that made me fall head over heels for classic who, and such, it will forever have a hold on me that few other pieces of fiction could ever hope to rival.
Well, here goes nothing! The Aztecs (#1 - Yeah, I know, it's cliche to say that this is your favourite Hartnell but when I was watching it on Twitch, I was quite honestly blown away with how good it was. I haven't watched most of era, so thank you to Twitch for allowing me to watch stories I've never seen) The Edge of Destruction (#2 - Could we please get more TARDIS-focused stories in the new series? All we have is The Doctor's Wife and the focus for that was on Idris, and not the paranoia inside the TARDIS. Imagine that but with Jodie's TARDIS team, it would be awesome!) The Time Meddler (#3 - Great fun, great villain, great cast, great ending, it is fantastic. I love the addition of Steven from the previous story, and he already works well with Hartnell. This is a fantastic TARDIS team and it is a shame that we don't have much of their stories in the archive) The Rescue (#4 - I love this story. I love it a lot. I love the costume design on the villain of the story, still freaky to this day. Vicki is just fantastic and it's a great opener for the new TARDIS team. That scene where the Doctor asks Susan to open the door is heartbreaking) The Chase (#5 - 60's Who boiled down into the most fun adventure that they could ever have. The first two stories are weak because of those fish people, but as soon as they leave that planet, the Chase kicks off! There is so much to love in this story) Honourable Mention: The Space Muesum (Like I said, I haven't watched much, but I actually enjoyed this story when it was shown on Twitch. Not as bad as everyone said it was)
I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who thinks Hartnell remains the best Doctor even after more than half a decade after his regeneration. Everyone seems to share the opinion that Troughton made the show better and that the new Doctors are overall the best. My favorite Hartnell stories are: 6. The Time Meddler - our first meeting with another Time Lord. 5. The Daleks - a great introduction to the now iconic villains and we get to see how curiosity almost killed the cat when The Doctor puts at risk not only his life, but also those of his compnions. 4. The Daleks' Invasion on Earth - a sheer epic that ends with the heartbreaking goodbye between The Doctor and susan. I'd really like to see Carole Ann Ford get visited by Jodie Whittaker - not only will The Doctor finally keep his promise to come back, but it would also be hilarious to have an octogenerian woman call another woman in her late 30s "Grandfather". 3. The Tenth Planet - I'm rather annoyed by the way the Cybermen speak in this story, but this is their first appearance and it really delivers. Not to mention the regeneration scene at the very end which must have been very unexpected for the viewers. 2. The Chase - I'm a fan of everything related to the Daleks and this story is unique due to the fact that it isn't confined by one particular planet or time, but it takes us to many different places. 1. The Unaired Pilot - I really think that it turned out better and creepier than the remake they actualy aired, but the kids would've been scarred for life if it had made the air. This is honestly one of the best and most compelling first episodes ever made. It gives you just enough information to hook you up.
I like Gunfighters. Its main problem is how they tried to make a Western wihtout any American actors or convincing american accents employed, and that damn song! But besides that, its not inherently a bad story. Just not the best execution.
I can remember on Twitter, someone who had done the animation for 'The Macra Terror' had put up a chart of what they look for when they want to animate a lost episode or story. The main one is how many characters are in it, and if it's over a certain amount, the BBC won't do it. So unfortunately, that means 'Marco Polo' and 'The Daleks' Master Plan' won't get the animation treatment.
Wow! Your taste exactly matches mine! Thank you for your incredible videos that highlight this era of Dr. Who! Bill Hartnell will always be #1 for me and these episodes really demonstrate why.
"The War Machine" with the doctor standing there, walking slowly and triumphantly closer to the War Machine while everyone else cowers. That is one of the first greatest "doctor" moment. And the Gunfighters is AMAZING. Even with the terrible American accent.
For me, The War Machines is the best, but to be fair, I never watched Daleks' Masterplan. Hopefully I'll be able to one day. The Time Meddler is a close second for me, while The Sensorites (underrated!) is the third. The First Doctor is my favourite as well, take five! ✋🏼
Some great choices there! I am encouraged to watch some of these serials again very soon. Love The War Machines - agree there should have been more contemporary Hartnell tales - this has the feel of Adam Adamant Lives about it. The Time Meddler has been a favourite of mine since I first saw it in 1992 when BBC2 began the first major repeat season of Who since 1984. The Romans is a sublime piece of TV. The joke about the fridge is a classic. Did you upgrade your choice of The Gunfighters? You give it a place on the list and then say it gets an honourable mention? You make a very convincing argument for each story and your obvious love of the First Doctor shines through. Great video, Josh!
You sure chose some fun ones... mine seem so serious now ;) 1) The Daleks' Master Plan 2) Marco Polo 3) The Crusade 4) The Aztecs 5) The Daleks 6) The Massacre Thanks again for all your great work!
A lot of people seem to fixate on Hartnell being this old and cranky version of The Doctor, but a lot of my favourite moments of the 1st Doctor are when he was being cheeky and childish. People seem to forget how funny he could be. I always loved it when one of the companions came up with the idea to save the day, only for The Doctor to turn around and say "yes, I'm glad I thought of that". Fans who perhaps never really watched the classic series probably have a view of him similar to that of "Twice Upon A Time" which is so wrong. He could be grumpy, but he was more often than not the mischievous grandfather figure going on wild adventures.
The Massacre is a Doctor who story a must see favorite about Steven being confused as The Doctor is The Aboot or the Aboot looks identical to his friend IF! I just the whole will WILL survive completely and return in the archives to it's glory and seeing THE LIGHT OF DAY!
In descending order 1 - The Unearthly Child (episode 1 only - the studio bound "cavemen trying to start a fire" episodes bore me) 2 - The Daleks 3 - The Web Planet (a guilty pleasure - so much ambition on a "High school Drama club" budget.) 4 - Daleks Master Plan (except the silly "Feast of Steven" for its ballsy killing off of characters.) 5 - The Ark (rare use in early Who of time travel within the story) 6 - Marco Polo - Best of the pure historicals.
I love The Time Meddler. A real ground-breaking episode. I love the moment the recording of the monks singing slows down. Peter Butterworth is great as The Monk.
Some of my favourite Hartnells, in no particular order: The Savages, The Ark, The Time Meddler, Masterplan, The Space Museum.. If only there were good, animated versions of eps 2,3 and 4 of The Savages....
You’re absolutely right, Time Meddler is currently my favourite First Doctor story. Although I do have a fondness for Keys of Marinus, Tenth Planet, and War Machines.
My top five Hartnell stories: 1. The Time Meddler 2. The Romans 3. The Tenth Planet 4. The Keys of Marinus 5. The Dalek Invasion of Earth Honorable mentions: An Unearthly Child, The Space Museum, Planet of Giants
My ranking for every 1st Dr story goes like this: 29). The Myth Makers 28). The Smugglers 27). The Rescue 26). The Space Museum 25). The Edge of Destruction 24). The Keys of Marinus 23). The Web Planet 22). The Crusade 21). The Ark 20). The Celestial Toymaker 19). The Sensorites 18). The Savages 17). The Reign of Terror 16). Planet of Giants 15). Galaxy 4 14). The Massacre of St Bartholomew’s Eve 13). The Gunfighters 12). The Time Meddler 11). The Tenth Planet 10). The Chase 9). The War Machines 8). The Romans 7). An Unearthly Child 6). The Daleks 5). The Dalek Invasion of Earth 4). The Daleks’ Master Plan 3). The Aztecs 2). Mission to the Unknown 1). Marco Polo
No one is going to agree with me, but my favourite first doctor story - and probably my favourite Doctor Who story of all time - is the Celestial Toymaker. It is so much fun to watch and I really enjoyed reading the Target Novelisation. I’m probably going to be alone in this, but there...
What a wonderful list! It's so cool to hear what you think about your favorite doctor, and I'm glad Hartnell has fans representing him! For me: 7. The Edge of Destruction 6. The Time Meddler 5. The Aztecs 4. The Space Museum (so underrated) 3. The Daleks' Masterplan 2. The Tenth Planet 1. The Dalek Invasion of Earth
Ah, Hartnell's a favourite of mine too. There really hasn't been a Doctor like him since. Even the oldest actor to portray the Doctor, Peter Capaldi, didn't give in anyway similar performance.
I have to comment just because I stan the Smugglers. I understand why y'all hate it it's got an 8-minute banter scene with no narration and two pictures of Polly/Ben on rotate I get it but I love it. Polly and Ben are such different people who collaborate so well together in their first story and the Doctor is kidnapped by pirates while going HUMHUMHUM and laughing and Polly remembers that everyone fears witchcraft and uses that to escape so I love it 6. Time Meddler 5. Masterplan 4. The Edge of Destruction 3. The Smugglers 2. Marco Polo 1. The Massacre (I detest how AAISAT implied that Billy method-acted the monologue)
My favorites I do love the Romans. Proving Doctor Who can be farce. I also love the bit of "Ian, Barbara's calling you" Massacre - It is such a strong story. Tragic. Also a strong Steven story that he takes center stage Also I do feel the Ark needs a mention due to it being one of the few stories that really used the travel part as we rarely see the Doctor return and see the effect of what they did.
One serial I really like that I feel frequently gets overlooked is The Space Museum! I don't know if it falls into my top 5 necessarily, but the first episode in particular reminded me of The Twilight Zone, and I absolutely loved seeing Vicki take charge in trying to organize the revolt. It definitely had its weaker moments later in the serial and felt like it really didn't have anywhere to go but down as the first episode was by far the best one, but I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Yeaaaaa a new Shares video *puts it in watch later*. Shall enjoy this later. Save BEST for last. Thank you Mr. Snares for all the hard work. Your fans appreciate your dedication and respect you show Hartnell and Troughton.
Dear Mr. Snares thank you for the heart but it's true. I've been a fan since the late 80s but yourself, a newbie (as you revealed in that video about how you became a fan?), does fantastic magical videos full of love and passion for Doctor Who? I feel less of a fan. I intend to be better from now on. UA-camrs/Fans like yourself have not only re ignited my Whovian flame but help each week to make my depression less worse than it might've been. Thank you. Means a lot. NEVER let anyone tell you can't because you're gay or any other reason. Have a wonderful day and Peace.
1. An Unearthly Child 2. The Daleks 3. Marco Polo 4. Planet Of The Giants 5. Dalek Invasion Of Earth 6. The Tenth Planet Honorable mentions: The Sensorites, The Rescue, Galaxy Four, The Crusades, The Myth Makers, Mission To The Unknown, The Daleks Masterplan and The Smugglers.
Nice list! Hartnell really had a lot of great stories, though I still think the Wotan says "Doctor Who is required" because of a linguistic bug in the programming. In programming, sometimes filling voice commands requires a name string, but since "Doctor" is probably identified as a string for profession and there is no known name to complete the sentence, they just fill it with a "Who" string instead of a null value to avoid errors. The technology is ahead of its time, but still in a primitive stage. And yes, I nerded out again over Who facts... sorry about that. P.S: Gunfighters is also a bold choice. And talking about cult following episodes that aren't the usual fan favourites, I actually love the Web Planet - recognizible creatures, magical cinematic alien landscape, a great mystery with creepy vibes, an ambitious project about an alien dystopia. The story may not have a lot of relatable elements or crazy twists but it's also as Doctor Who as it can get. One day, I would love to see those aliens redesigned.
I am so here for Gunfighters love. And honestly, every single one of your choices would be on my list too. I think that your comments on the War Machines and the companions are really interesting.
@@JoshSnares I'm of that generation that was always told "Celestial Toymaker is a classic; The Gunfighters is awful", so I was blown away when I saw the latter. So much fun, so joyful.
Time Meddler- it's a fresh and invigorating story, with a mystery and revelation that work well. The Daleks Master Plan - definitely epic! The Daleks - the first one just sells an exploration into a true alien world. It may be a little long but still works for me! An Unearthly Child - yes, even parts 2-4. Part 1 is truly remarkable in everything it does. 2 through 4 have their own moral to tell. Yes, the cavemen have language skills well beyond their time but what else could they do, hmm? :) The Tenth Planet - not a perfect story but the Cybermen rarely came across as genuinely creepy as in this. They're not robots, they're mummified walking corpses kept going by tons of implants and saying how much better it is to be that way.
OK, Josh. Here's my top six: 1) The Time Meddler 2) The Crusade 3) The War Machines 4) The Daleks 5) The Aztecs 6) The Web Planet I've only seen the existent three episodes of DMP, so I'm going to just give it an honorable mention.
Since you asked (in chronological order as I can't see myself trying to rank them, tho I feel the ranking is quite close to the same, despite my preference for Vicki over Susan) 1: Keys of Marinus 2: The Sensorites 3: Reign of Terror (but without the unfortunate animations) 4: The Space Museum 5: The Chase 6: The Time Meddler Honourable mentions: The Crusade and The Tenth Planet (with the vastly superior animation for Part 4).
The Gunfighters...? I'd love to know your least favourite Hartnell stories... 😉 think I'd have to switch it out with The Aztecs. Top list, nice vid, thanks.
I'd have to say The Time Meddler is my favourite. I can't go past all the other historicals. Aztec, Romans and Gunfighters are all amazing... I would definitely love to see Marco Polo, Myth Makers and the other half of The Crusade returned to the archives. Great video review. Thank you.
My favorites 1) the keys of Marinus 2) planet of giants 3) the Daleks 4) the egde of distruction 5) the chase Also love The time meddler And Space museum
I really enjoyed this one. Our reaction to any episode of the series is completely subjective which you can see by scrolling through the comments and seeing which episodes are mentioned most and in some cases, not at all! My six are all based on the fact that I'm a historian or because of a particular performance I've enjoyed. In chronological order...1. Marco Polo - such a shame it doesn't exist, it looks an opulent, beautifully designed production and the CDs give an excellent sense of the overall scale of the narrative. Mark Eden is superb and Hartnell and Khan griping over their aches and pains is a delightful moment.2. The Aztecs - a great guest cast, with a scenery chewing tour-de-force by John Ringham. He rants, he declaims like Olivier, he even breaks the Fourth Wall but he's the only villain in the history of the series who wins. Despite her best efforts, Barabara changes nothing and the Aztecs will have their blood. Ian, Ixta and that "heavy" stone though...3. The Romans - a great way to ease a new companion into the series and there is plenty of action, from a terrible fight scene between Hartnell and an assassin to Barbara being chased by Nero in what looks like a scene from Scooby Doo! Plus, I'm also pretty sure that Ian and Barbara get a bit naughty at the villa whilst under the influence of some fine wine...OH MY!!4.The Crusade - Julian Glover, Jean Marsh and Bernard Kay lead an amazing guest cast, with another memorable villain as played by Walter Randall. Once again, the regulars all get some time to shine, with Hartnell and Hill being especially fine. The production is lovely to look at and there is a real sense that everyone knew this was going to be something special.5. The Web Planet - O.K. My guilty pleasure, just like the Pet Shop Boys CDs hidden behind the bust of Beethoven. It's insane, nothing makes sense, the acting is vile, Richard Martin put Vaseline on the camera lens because, well he just didn't care about Doctor Who and when it all comes down to it, you can't top...ZAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARBI!!!5.The Myth Makers - It might just be even funnier than the Romans and then, everyone dies. It's written like a stage play and it still works. Max Adrian, Frances de Wolff and Barrie Ingham ("You can't say whoa to the Horse" is a riot!) are all wonderful but sadly, Vicki's departure is the first of many half-hearted farewells to companions who just didn't want to be there anymore. Favourite Troughton stories coming up next?
I have to congratulate you young man on your research and videos on the first doctor. These videos are priceless and such a refreshing sight from other Dr items on UA-cam. I can't agree with your selection but that's OK it's subjective. Oh yes I watched these when they were first screened. That makes me as old as the doctor
The chase was my fave, it had daleks lots of different places, and old companions leaving new one joining. Drama, comedy. Was good. Master plan veery close second, for same reasons.
Sorry but being the nerd I am, you said The War Machines was his penultimiate story when obviously The Smugglers is
Yeah, I mean who would forget about a masterpiece like the Smugglers?
omg i am the worst fan, i'm cancelling myself
Why isn't the BBC hiring him to DO THESE for the actual releases?
Mind boggling the mentality of the BBC.
@@JoshSnares I mean I dont blame you because The Smugglers is one of the worst stories ever
you spelt 'best' wrong
Keys of Marinus is one of my favourite first Doctor adventures. Love the format of it, having each episode it’s own little sub-Adventure in a different style, brining it all together in the end.
That's actually the FIRST William Hartnell story I ever watched! Loved it and have been a fan of his Doctor ever since! 😂😂😂😂
ye, I love it too, my 2nd favourite
One of my favourites.
Please make more of these for all the Doctor's! Your such a good youtuber, and I'd love to hear your thoughts on the other Doctors eras!
I like that The Gunfighters gets a placing AND an honourable mention too, it's just that good! Another great vid Josh, lovely to see your appreciation for this era, it's easily my favourite. Agree heartily with all your choices. Every one a classic. Choosing favs is impossible I love them all, however..
1. The Myth Makers
2. The Smugglers
3. The Keys of Marinus
4. The Reign of Terror
5. The Crusade
6. The Space Museum
7:49 soooo, you love the Gunfighters so much that you accidentally mentioned it for a second time 😂
The Chase is definitely up there with the great adventures.
Mine would be:
6. Mission To The Unknown
5. The Dalek Invasion Of Earth
4. The Romans
3. The Time Meddler
2. The Daleks Master plan
1. The Aztecs
Mission to the unknown is good, but it is not, top tier for me, why do you like about it?
@@sampletext8229 isnt mission to the unknown th one where the doctor doesn't appear? No idea why I ranked it 6th best
Bless you, sir! Hartnell is a delight! My fondest wish is a beautiful animation of Marco Polo someday.
We can all dream!
Some of my favorite 1st Doctor stories were The Time Meddler, The Dalek Invasion of Earth, The Tenth Planet, The Daleks, and the Reign of Terror.
Someone needs to descent from the skies baring a wheelbarrow with all the missing episodes in. We need more missing ep recoveries in my life time.
If I had to choose, I think:
1. The Time Meddler
2. The Dalek Invasion of Earth
3. The Savages (where's my animation of this, BBC? C'mon, get your bloody act together!)
4. The Tenth Planet
5. The Celestial Toymaker
My top 5 First Doctor Stories is
1 Marco Polo
2 The Aztecs
3 The Daleks
4 The Tenth planet
5 The Daleks Master plan
Marco Polo is literally one the best things ever made.
Matthew JH 60s who is the best
it is also the one lost story we have no hope of recovering cause nitwits in the bbc burnt it, so unless some one else has it, its gone for good!
Great video. My favourites are:
1 - The Daleks
2 - The Tenth Planet
3 - The Time Meddler
4 - The Dalek Invasion of Earth
5 - The Keys of Marinus
6 - The Aztecs
Special mention to the first episode of An Unearthly Child - possibly one of the best episodes of Doctor Who in the entire series.
A fantastic review of some very interesting Hartnell stories. My top five would have to be
1. Daleks Master plan
2. An Ubearthly Child (All four episodes )
3. Dalek Invasion of earth
4. The Web Planet
5. The Aztecs
It's just so good to see William Hartnell getting so much respect these days as we owe him so much. 👍😎
Since no ones talking about it (I know it had a lot of problems) I just wanna say I love The Keys Of Marinus.
To offer another ranking into the mix:
6. The Edge of Destruction
5. The Crusade
4. The Dalek Invasion of Earth
3. The Aztecs
2. The War Machines
We've all got a favourite!
Superb choices! I adore Hartnell's era.
Another fantastic video Josh!! To be honest Hartnell ranks somewhere in the middle for me as "best doctor"..but there are some stellar stories.
My top 5:
#5- The Gun fighters - I have to agree with you about this one...it's silly but it's comedy moments make want to watch this one over and over again.
Why does everyone prefer Dalek invasion of Earth to The Dalek's Master Plan?
I agree on Episode 1 of The Space Museum! It's amazing! Then... episodes 2-4.... :( :( :( Just dreadful.
1) Daleks Masterplan
2) Time Meddler
3) Reign of Terror
4) Gunfighters
5) War Machines
6) Savages
7) The sensorites
Really wanted to out in the Daleks or Planet of the giants and Marco Polo or the Massacre. All really great stories.
Here my top 6 (from what I’ve seen):
6. An Unearthly Child
5. The Space Museum
4. The Dalek Invasion Of Earth
3. Keys Of Marinus
2. The Aztecs
1. The War Machines
I too love The Gunfighters. Even the bad singing. And how the Doctor rolls the dice on wild western dentistry. I'd've hit the randomiser on the TARDIS and hoped for the best.
And to answer the question, my top five, unorthodox I know...
the keys of marinus
The daleks master plan
The dead planet
The web planet
The chase
I'm a huge fan of TKoM for same reason as Josh mentions 're TDMP. That it's so wide ranging, a vast story. KOM is one of the few times where the story based on an alien planet isn't confined to one tiny area. Instead different regions of marinus are shown. :)
agree 100% about keys or marinus
Very good choices. The Gunfighters is okay for what it is, and I do agree that it's fun. The Romans is also a pretty fun story and is wildly underrated.
Just know you have to do one of these for each of the Doctors now.
I heartily agree that THE DALEKS' MASTERPLAN is one of the best ever stories and that it should be animated. Something else we can agree on is Billy Hartnell - had the Doctor been a real person and not a fictional character, he would have been Billy for sure. :)
I too love The Gunfighters, and I'm not ashamed to say it!
yeehaw!
29. The Massacre
28. The Rescue
27. The Myth Makers
26. The Tenth Planet
25. The Savages
24. The Web Planet
23. Galaxy 4
22. The Time Meddler
21. The Crusade
20. The Reign of Terri
19. The Aztecs
18. The Edge of Destruction
17. The Smugglers
16. The Gunfighters
15. The Ark
14. The Sensorites
13. Mission to the Unknown
12. The Space Museum
11. The War Machines
10. The Keys of Marinus
9. An Unearthly Child
8. Marco Polo
7. Planet of Giants
6. The Dalek Invasion of Earth
5. The Celestial Toymaker
4. The Romans
3. The Daleks
2. The Daleks Master Plan
Great video this, love listening to other people’s opinions. My favourite doctor is Troughton. Love him so much 😀
Well, here goes nothing!
The Aztecs (#1 - Yeah, I know, it's cliche to say that this is your favourite Hartnell but when I was watching it on Twitch, I was quite honestly blown away with how good it was. I haven't watched most of era, so thank you to Twitch for allowing me to watch stories I've never seen)
The Edge of Destruction (#2 - Could we please get more TARDIS-focused stories in the new series? All we have is The Doctor's Wife and the focus for that was on Idris, and not the paranoia inside the TARDIS. Imagine that but with Jodie's TARDIS team, it would be awesome!)
The Time Meddler (#3 - Great fun, great villain, great cast, great ending, it is fantastic. I love the addition of Steven from the previous story, and he already works well with Hartnell. This is a fantastic TARDIS team and it is a shame that we don't have much of their stories in the archive)
The Rescue (#4 - I love this story. I love it a lot. I love the costume design on the villain of the story, still freaky to this day. Vicki is just fantastic and it's a great opener for the new TARDIS team. That scene where the Doctor asks Susan to open the door is heartbreaking)
The Chase (#5 - 60's Who boiled down into the most fun adventure that they could ever have. The first two stories are weak because of those fish people, but as soon as they leave that planet, the Chase kicks off! There is so much to love in this story)
Honourable Mention: The Space Muesum (Like I said, I haven't watched much, but I actually enjoyed this story when it was shown on Twitch. Not as bad as everyone said it was)
You forgot about Journey to the Center of the TARDIS.
Ender We’re all trying to forget that one.
If Edge of Destruction was basically the Midnight of the classic series it might have been one of the very best of all time
I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who thinks Hartnell remains the best Doctor even after more than half a decade after his regeneration. Everyone seems to share the opinion that Troughton made the show better and that the new Doctors are overall the best. My favorite Hartnell stories are:
Yeah in classic it either troughton or hartnell
Perfect timing, I'm coming toward the end of yet another Hartnell watch through.
I like Gunfighters. Its main problem is how they tried to make a Western wihtout any American actors or convincing american accents employed, and that damn song! But besides that, its not inherently a bad story. Just not the best execution.
God I love the 60s Doctor Who so much!
My absolute favourite Hartnell story is the Tenth Planet. Will you do make these for all of the Doctor's?
What you do is brilliant Josh. Keep it going and thanks.
Never say never...
So many good stories to choose from, I have a soft spot for The War Machines as it was the first Hartnell story I ever owned.
You sure chose some fun ones... mine seem so serious now ;)
1) The Daleks' Master Plan
2) Marco Polo
3) The Crusade
4) The Aztecs
5) The Daleks
6) The Massacre
Thanks again for all your great work!
Bill Hartnell is my favorite Doctor too, and Season Three was brilliant.
I LOVE The War Machines - it really shakes things up - it sets the template for all the wonderful unit stories.
Im so happy you put Daleks master plan as number one, same here. I love the narrated audio release!
The Massacre is a Doctor who story a must see favorite about Steven being confused as The Doctor is The Aboot or the Aboot looks identical to his friend IF! I just the whole will WILL survive completely and return in the archives to it's glory and seeing THE LIGHT OF DAY!
In descending order
1 - The Unearthly Child (episode 1 only - the studio bound "cavemen trying to start a fire" episodes bore me)
2 - The Daleks
3 - The Web Planet (a guilty pleasure - so much ambition on a "High school Drama club" budget.)
4 - Daleks Master Plan (except the silly "Feast of Steven" for its ballsy killing off of characters.)
5 - The Ark (rare use in early Who of time travel within the story)
6 - Marco Polo - Best of the pure historicals.
the gunfighters is so good it made the list and the honourable mentions!
I love The Time Meddler. A real ground-breaking episode. I love the moment the recording of the monks singing slows down. Peter Butterworth is great as The Monk.
Another brilliant video!
My top five Hartnell stories:
1. The Time Meddler
2. The Romans
3. The Tenth Planet
4. The Keys of Marinus
5. The Dalek Invasion of Earth
Honorable mentions: An Unearthly Child, The Space Museum, Planet of Giants
I love the gunfighters. Its a fun light hearted episode with some great comedy in it.
"Doc?"
"yes?"
Holiday?"
"I suppose so."
My ranking for every 1st Dr story goes like this:
29). The Myth Makers
28). The Smugglers
27). The Rescue
26). The Space Museum
25). The Edge of Destruction
24). The Keys of Marinus
23). The Web Planet
22). The Crusade
21). The Ark
20). The Celestial Toymaker
19). The Sensorites
18). The Savages
17). The Reign of Terror
16). Planet of Giants
15). Galaxy 4
14). The Massacre of St Bartholomew’s Eve
13). The Gunfighters
12). The Time Meddler
11). The Tenth Planet

8). The Romans
7). An Unearthly Child
6). The Daleks

4). The Daleks’ Master Plan
3). The Aztecs
2). Mission to the Unknown
1). Marco Polo
6.The Daleks
5.The Daleks Invasion Of Earth
4.Daleks master Plan
3.The War Machines
2.The Tenth Planet
1.The Gunfighters
How much similar do you think this list is to your own leave it in the replies bellow
I think I'm gonna need to rewatch the Gunfighters now.
Do it!!
For me:
7. The Edge of Destruction
6. The Time Meddler
5. The Aztecs
4. The Space Museum (so underrated)
3. The Daleks' Masterplan
2. The Tenth Planet
1. The Dalek Invasion of Earth
Time Meddler was the 1st Hartnell story I saw, during the 1993 BBC repeat run so it has always been one of my favourites too.
Great review Josh ! You picked my favourite top 5 exactly 😊😊
Polly and Ben are such different people who collaborate so well together in their first story and the Doctor is kidnapped by pirates while going HUMHUMHUM and laughing and Polly remembers that everyone fears witchcraft and uses that to escape so I love it
6. Time Meddler
5. Masterplan
4. The Edge of Destruction
3. The Smugglers
2. Marco Polo
1. The Massacre (I detest how AAISAT implied that Billy method-acted the monologue)
My favorites
I do love the Romans. Proving Doctor Who can be farce. I also love the bit of "Ian, Barbara's calling you"
Massacre - It is such a strong story. Tragic. Also a strong Steven story that he takes center stage
Also I do feel the Ark needs a mention due to it being one of the few stories that really used the travel part as we rarely see the Doctor return and see the effect of what they did.
I love All of the first doctor story from the William Hartnell
Wonderful video, Josh. Hartnell is also my favorite Doctor, and your list is very similar to my own. But my favorite story is "Marco Polo".
William hartnell is definitely a favorite of mine
I love that you love him
And I agree time meddler is amazing
The Time Meddler and The Romans would definitely be on my list. Would also have An Unearthly Child and The Aztecs too.
Yeaaaaa a new Shares video
*puts it in watch later*.
Shall enjoy this later. Save BEST for last. Thank you Mr. Snares for all the hard work. Your fans appreciate your dedication and respect you show Hartnell and Troughton.
Dear Mr. Snares thank you for the heart but it's true.
I've been a fan since the late 80s but yourself, a newbie (as you revealed in that video about how you became a fan?),
does fantastic magical videos full of love and passion for Doctor Who? I feel less of a fan. I intend to be better from now on.
UA-camrs/Fans like yourself have not only re ignited my Whovian flame but help each week to make my depression less worse than it might've been. Thank you. Means a lot. NEVER let anyone tell you can't because you're gay or any other reason.
Have a wonderful day and Peace.
OK the opening 'Space helmet for a cow' just made me spit tea all over my macbook. Nice one.
it's the best line in history! haha
1. An Unearthly Child
2. The Daleks
3. Marco Polo
4. Planet Of The Giants
5. Dalek Invasion Of Earth
6. The Tenth Planet
Honorable mentions: The Sensorites, The Rescue, Galaxy Four, The Crusades, The Myth Makers, Mission To The Unknown, The Daleks Masterplan and The Smugglers.
Yes, one day....
Woah, you came up with the exact same theory I did
I am so here for Gunfighters love. And honestly, every single one of your choices would be on my list too. I think that your comments on the War Machines and the companions are really interesting.
The Gunfighters is so much fun!
@@JoshSnares I'm of that generation that was always told "Celestial Toymaker is a classic; The Gunfighters is awful", so I was blown away when I saw the latter. So much fun, so joyful.
What? No love for The Celestial Toymaker?!?!
The Tenth Planet is all kinds of awesome. The Mondasian Cybermen are genuinely unnerving.
The Tenth Planet - not a perfect story but the Cybermen rarely came across as genuinely creepy as in this. They're not robots, they're mummified walking corpses kept going by tons of implants and saying how much better it is to be that way.
OK, Josh. Here's my top six:
1) The Time Meddler
2) The Crusade
3) The War Machines
4) The Daleks
5) The Aztecs
6) The Web Planet
I've only seen the existent three episodes of DMP, so I'm going to just give it an honorable mention.
Since you asked (in chronological order as I can't see myself trying to rank them, tho I feel the ranking is quite close to the same, despite my preference for Vicki over Susan)
1: Keys of Marinus
2: The Sensorites
3: Reign of Terror (but without the unfortunate animations)
4: The Space Museum
5: The Chase
6: The Time Meddler
Honourable mentions: The Crusade and The Tenth Planet (with the vastly superior animation for Part 4).
My top three:
3. An Unearthly Child
2. The Tenth Planet
1. The Daleks
fun list. Hartnell is my second fav also.
You are right Josh, the daleks master plan should be animated next!
Thank you.
for honorable mentions, you said The Gunfighters...
My favorites
1) the keys of Marinus
2) planet of giants
3) the Daleks
4) the egde of distruction
5) the chase
Also love
The time meddler
And Space museum
Damn, The Gunfighters made the list AND the honourable mentions? You must really love that story :P
so nice, i mention it twice
would you mind looking into cliffhangers and how they are significant both to doctor who as a show and the look into lost episodes?
