    The worst thing to me is that the animation leaves the best scene out. That's where the Doctor and companions lie down amongst the dead bodies in the corridor, and pretend to be dead, as a Dalek inspects the bodies for signs of life, its eye stalk going from corpse to corpse, ready to blast away at any movement. Truly terrifying to a seven year old, I can tell you.

    I like the fact that the BBC is doing animated episodes to fill the gaps, but, I wish they would spend a little money and get better quality animation.

      It's especially bad if you consider that an "amateur" animation package like MMD, even in 2016, could have done **FAR** better work than this. OpenToonz was released as open-source (based on the Toonz package) in March 2016. And Toonz is what Studio Ghibli uses for their computer animation. Really, there's NO excuse for such shoddy work.
      About the only thing that would look more stilted, clunky and un-lifelike would be the acting, scripting and direction in the latest two seasons of DrWho.

    I saw this story as it was originally broadcast in Australia in 1966. I was living in Newcastle( NSW) at the time and was 5 years old. I did not hide behind the sofa; I hid behind the kitchen door, which was in turn behind the sofa and peered occasionally around the corner despite myself. This story and The Moonbase remain seminal for me in regards to Dr Who. I had seen the final two or three Hartnell stories, including of course the Tenth Planet, but it's these early Troughton stories that are imprinted upon me.

    Love the videos! Just a slight correction about the 35mm film. Although episodes like Power 6, Wheel 6, and Space Pirates 2 were recorded to that format, they were still 625 line SD signals from the cameras, just using a different storage medium from tape. So none of them can be represented in HD. But for the ones that survive, at least they are master recordings, and not telerecordings where 16mm cameras were pointed at TV screens, like the other surviving 60's episodes.
    Still cruel that Power 6 is not among the survivors, of course.

    I took my family to watch Power of the Daleks in the cinema - they had a one-off showing that I managed to get tickets to. Apropos of nothing, back in the late 90's, I was friends with a fellow Aussie who did classic DW reconstructions under the name Change of Identity (taken, of course, from the episode of the same name in The Reign of Terror). He did excellent reconstructions and I still have VHS copies of The Savages, The Power of the Daleks, The Moonbase and The Enemy of the World. Ironically, the missing five episodes of The Enemy of the World was discovered intact in a television relay station storage room in Nigeria, so the reconstruction is now rendered moot, but it's still an interesting watch. He did very thorough work, so all the clips from Power are included in his reconstruction. I've often wondered if there was a way to transfer VHS to digital, but I've tried several different ways without success. :-(

    I kinda wish they did some sort of hybrid episodes with both animation and the recovered 8mm/16mm clips. Just to fill in the blanks.
    Kinda like what they is with The Animated Shada.

    • @EditedAF987
      @EditedAF987 3 роки тому

      Problem is with Shada we had full scenes so the jumps between animation and live action would only occur at the end of a scene. With the power of the Daleks on the other hand, we only have random snippets of footage from the scenes so the jumps between animation and live action would occur in the middle of scenes and probably feel a lot more jarring

    This animation is good! I'd say it'd be a 9/10, I don't really like how they widened the screen to 16:9, it doesn't match with some of the other episodes, like if you're watching the show and it's 4:3, then it's all of a sudden 16:9. Also I didn't expect how at 1:07 the animated doctor matched with the background doctors legs lol😂.

      The Jacal Indeed. Although I can take the fact that they made The Space Pirates as a huge budget saver for The War Games, the only things that save it are the main villain only being represented through production stills, random things here and there in the serial, Milo Clancy (I wasn't joking when I said that), and the paring of The Doctor, Jamie, and Zoe. Other than that, it's not that interesting, and is litterally my least favorite missing serial.

    I personally don't really like the animation, I watched the power of the Daleks the other day and opted out of watching the official release and instead watched the loose cannon version. It is a brilliant story but something I noticed is that much like the myth makers there is an 8mm clip of the Doctor saying "are you coming or are you not?" And he puts a hat on his head but this is not from the first scene in the TARDIS it's actually from later in the Mercury swamps because you can tell from the background, I think he actually says "come on you two"
    Also great video by the way!
    Would you ever consider doing some missing episode videos in the style of your missing episode series but this time you look at episodes like enemy of the world or tomb of the cybermen, ones that were missing for a while but were eventually recovered? I suppose it might not work as well...

    • @SofiaFox
      @SofiaFox 5 років тому

      Another 8mm clip was wrongly identified too. A The Myth Makers Death of a Spy clip was identified as part of the slitting throats censor clip in Episode 2 Small Prophet, Quick Return. We only have a partial clip of that.

    Watching this, I'm wondering if the daleks would be edible. Been toying around with the idea of Sixie taking in an androgum tween who acts like a typical kawaii little girl, but she loves to eat, has no concept of danger (and is a danger to herself and others) and she thinks daleks might be tasty. Been imagining her cracking open a dalek while yelling "Cream filling! Cream filling!" without any guile at all, and then taking out the tentacled thing and whacking it over and over with a rock - while it's still alive... all as if she's struggling to open a jar.

    Seeing those blurry clips and tele-snaps, it brings it all back to me. I was lucky enough to watch The Power of the Daleks when it aired live in 1966. (I was aged 5). I can actually recall a few moments - especially the first regeneration of the Doctor. The animations look OK. But for me, alas, (having seen the original), I don't think I'd ever be able to watch the animated version. It's just not the same! I hope they find the real thing one day.

    I really appreciate that we are getting all of these old stories animated. I really do. And I try to be kind about the animations, but it's frustrating that the issue with the animation quality is just little things letting it down. So much of it is really good, they put heaps of effort into things like backgrounds, but so little care seems to be put into things like walk cycles. I get that they need to cut corners somewhere but they cut corners in the wrong places. It's a real shame honestly.

    Though I greatly enjoyed the animation, you do highlight some of the issues with the first episode -, particularly around the inconsistencies withTroughton's animated rendering. Clearly, attempts were made to closely match the post-regeneration depiction of the actor with the 8mm film, but it just ends up jarring with the rendering used for the remainder of the serial. Character movements are also at their weakest here and that's not even mentioning the clothing error. Hopefully, this particular episode will be tidied up a bit for the inevitable Season 4 Bluray boxset.

    Would have liked to have had a mention of some of the different *versions* of this animated feature. The reverse from what I remember. It's actually messed up. One of the mistakes is Ben and Polly in the wrong clothes in a scene. BBCAmerica.com had two versions available on demand through their website: the black and white and the color version. Sometime after they had those online, BBC America aired yet *another* color version of the serial. That version had them in the correct clothing in that scene. From what I understand, the home video release may still have the mistake, at least in one of the versions of it (The black and white?). You can see a screencap of the two ondemand versions and the second later color version they aired. imgur.com/83bc7MG

    Not gonna lie, I appreciate the amount of effort put into these animated reconstructions and I love your comparison videos but....I kind of prefer the loose canon reconstructions.
    The quality of the sound in these 60s stories is poor compared to later episodes, and it becomes jarring to watch the high quality animation over the audio from the episodes- they just don't synch in my mind. Not to mention as great as the animation is it always looks a bit stilted to me (the one exception of this being the recent Macra Terror release). I appreciate the work and Im glad they're doing this since other fans love them but I do still prefer the telesnaps.
    With that said I'd LOVE a fully animated version of Marco Polo or Fury From the Deep.

    From what I saw in the first 2 minutes the animation was so true to the telesnaps. I might understand the need to be economical in the animation, eliminating the closeups would lesson the limited animation short comings, however, from the Loose Canon reconstruction of what does survive of the original live action clips should have been preserved, my humble opinion. A small criticism, however.
