I used Silk to repaint my bathroom cabinets but have been nervous about tackling the BIG kitchen project. I am so glad I watched your video to see that you used Gator Hide. I didn't realize I could use that product over Silk but will definitely do as the kitchen gets so much more use/dirt than the bathrooms. Also, I didn't paint the back of my bathroom cabinet doors either, but may in the kitchen..... thank you for all the detailed information in this video.

Planning to paint my kitchen cabinet and countertop the first time. Should I do the countertop first then cabinet? Or the other way round.
if I paint furniture I do it all together. Unless I am staining then I do the top stained last. I don't think it matters so much. Make sure to give the tops extra Gator Hide coats for durability. Have fun.
It's been a couple months. How is it holding up? Nice video. My daughter used the regular dixie belle on a vanity and used the matte top coat.
We aren't having issue with the final result all holding up. I still recommend Gator Hide for super durability. I suggest a test cabinet door for sure to make sure the wood doesn't need more primer or for sure B.O.S.S.
Did you lightly sand between coats with the Silk?

Did u say u brushed the doors? It looks sprayed. When you spray the atomized paint will follow the low areas, such as gaps in the grain; and not fill them like a brush does.
There was parts of the kitchen I tried spraying on. For this video, I hadn't done any spraying yet. The paint levels so well especially since I kept them flat to dry. If you saw my kitchen, you wouldn't know what I sprayed or hand painted. I even forget. :-)
Hi your cabinets look great! I have a question… my cabinets are dark would i need to use boss on them.
I really recommend that you go through the steps on a door front and maybe a side panel of a cabinet. Clean, scuff, paint, top coat. if you don't see any issues you should be good to go. But if after top coating-if you choose to do that and you see bleed through, then I would BOSS after cleaning. Some areas in my kitchen needed it and other didn't. I've been looking everywhere to find out how to clean my brush after using dixie belle silk. How do you clean yours?
1. Run my fingers through the bristles while under warm (not hot water)
2. I use a stiff brush while the brush is laying in my sink flat, I run the stiff brush away from the handle, removing any paint left on the bristles of the brush.
3. I let water run down into the bristles, looking for any signs of paint.
4. Check for anything missed
5. I hang the brush so the bristles are down while it dries.

the paint and top coat don't have any issues with smell. I hope that answers the questions.
Its been over a year now and how are your cabinets holding up?
there are a couple heavy used spots that need a little touch up but overall, they are in great shape.
Doesn't Silk have a primer in it so I wouldn't have to use a primer?
the BOSS was for stain blocker/bleed through. I personally didn't trust that the bit of built in primer would be enough.
Can i replace a gator hide with something else
Extra Coats of Dixie Belle's Top Coat.
Why use gator hide as opposed to clear coat?
It's super durable, harder, stronger finish overall.
Why did you choose the silk paint for the cabinets verses the regular chalk?
I want to put the new product to the ultimate test and I love how smooth it paints on. It goes on so well.
Why use the silk instead of the chalk mineral?
that's a great question. I could go either way really. Silk is more like a latex paint but I can't say it's more or less durable than Chalk Mineral Paint. At the time, Silk was a new project and I know a lot of people were looking for helps like this.
Why didn’t you paint the inside of the doors?
just personal preference and time. They match the inside of the cabinets :-)
