A solid desk w/ a non-swivel chair w/o wheels & a heavy box behind the pedals is a good basic setup. My desk was wobbling around a lot so I added some steal brackets. Now I bet it’s strong enough for a dd wheel.

    • @Greego
      @Greego 2 роки тому +4

That probably has a lot more to say about Timmy than the wheel though. There is always an example of a very exceptional person that somehow beats the odds just from natural gifts and talent. I think 90% of racers probably won’t be able to pull that off. However, you must have the attitude that you can do it.

I’m more than happy to share what I’ve learned over my years:
    1. After 7+ years since I first decided to move from games like OG Grid to sims, starting with Raceroom and now covering most titles from Assetto Corsa to rFactor 2, and consistently having a Logitech wheel of some kind (Momo, G27, G920 + G29), with enough practice you can be fast! Now those products do lack some fidelity in both FFB output and braking inputs but one can adapt (until you sample something like a Simucube 2 + Fanatec clubsport v3 pedals on a 6DOF motion system, then you’ll probably want to look at upgrades, lol)
    2. A fixed chair, be it part of a full cockpit or not, is key to getting a good seating position for comfort and performance reasons, though in saying that right now I’m not following that advice (temporarily)
    3. Load cell brake pedals are so much better, and I’ve only had brief experiences with them as vaguely outlined above, but being able to be consistent is better than one lap fast, one lap slow
    4. VR is great for immersion but see if you can try before you buy - also requires a decent system to run properly as FPS drops below the headset’s refresh rate are very noticeable and personally induce mild nausea
There’s probably more but I don’t want to write an essay here lol 😅 hope this helps some people :)

I was getting motion sick in my VR headset because my office chair was moving around, so I ditched it for a visitors chair (like a waiting room chair) - problem solved. Was cheaper than an office chair, and it was more comfortable too.
I run VR with a 1080GTX and an old i7-4770k no problem for most things except Assetto Corsa Competitzone which makes my system feel like an etch-a-sketch in VR. Fine in triple screen though.

I'd have two massive pieces of information for anyone looking to get into sim racing
1: whatever wheel you get, get one with force feeback. You don't need the fanciest direct drive wheel, you dont even need a belt driven one. Just avoid something with bunjee cords or even no ffb
2: Find some kind of frame to fit everything to. Sure, you can strap your logitech wheel to a coffee table and sit on a bunnings lawn chair and go racing, but having a rigid structure to strap everything to has made me more consistent than anything else.

Made my cockpit out of wood.(mdf and 2x4's). Solid as a rock with DD wheel and huesingfevlt (sp) pedals. Got my car seat out of a PT cruiser in a junkyard. Works great. Has recline and moves forward and back. With VR and tactile transducers, can't get much better!

Thank you for the video! My experience, I'm new to Sim Racing. Started with a Ferrari 458 Spider, no ffb, bungie chord. I loved it, so I've since moved on to around a $2000 setup (F-GT, Thrustmaster TX, Th8a, T3pa, TV mount, 49" Sanyo 1080 TV, Xbox1X/PS4) over time I plan on slowly building up to a Fanatec DD1/DD2, Formula V3 wheel&P1 with V3 peddles only issue I will be using them with the F-GT 😂 as I plan on keeping this cockpit for a long time. It's an awesome experience and a hobby I am so glad to have found.

That's a great setup, so great that it's exactly what I'm rocking too!
F-GT, TX 458 edition, monitor stand with 32" 1080P TV, Xbox One X.
Next thing on my shopping list will be the Thrustmaster LCM pedals they just released this year, as the included ones I'm currently using are basically junk.
Then the TH8A and the F1 wheel and that's about as good as it gets on Xbox

One thing i missed out on is DIY Rigs. you can spend as low as 50$ on pvc or wood and using your imagination to build your rig it won't be perfect for example i have a rig made out of straight muffler parts.

I built a 15 EUR wooden frame for the floor, which my pedals are fixed into. My office chair has a cylinder prodtruding to near the floor from the central axis. The wooden frame is made so this cylinder is wedged into the frame. works really well for keeping both chair and pedals 100 % in place.

Nice idea! I have had to wedge an old door from a build in wardrobe (That I took out last week) behind my wheely chair to get it to stop rolling around when I brake. I tried removing the wheels but the cylinder sticking out of the base ended that idea quickly...

    • @andersrasmussen3942

@@d1rcwill can definitely recommend to find some way to lock the pedal position to your chair. It makes a huge difference in your driving consistency.

Few things i wanna share :)
I'm currently using the Logitech G29 (with shifter) on PS4 and loving it. Recently i have run into a little issue regarding the wheel. The wheel disconnects randomly mid race. The contant disconnecting does get pretty annoying but i'm sure it's just a hardware issue. I'm unable to take it back due to the current 'thing' happening right now (stay safe everyone)
2nd thing is that the sim racing community has always been very helpful and positive. Not only content creators like Will but aldo people you meet in online lobbies.
I tend to write very long essays so i'll leave it here 😂
Don't go all out and buy everything straight away; make sure you love the sport
    Enjoy!!

Ben CF the noise is a bit annoying and can be a prob w/ roommates if U race late at night. It’s loader w/ some sims than others. The noise is part of the reason I upgraded to a T300 it’s not silent but DRAMATICALLY quieter. I’m no longer concerned of disturbing roommates late at night. (FFB is also stronger & smoother).

I've been sim racing for 5/6'ish years, crazy how time flies!! I'm by no means a pro, it's about having fun too!! I purchased the F1 Playseat, little more on the pricier end of the scale, but if you love F1, it's awesome!! As for wheel hardware, I have the Thrustmaster t500, honestly, can't fault it, great for an entry level set up, pedals have been faultless even up to now, the only two issues Iv'e run into were: 1) the wheel slightly losing it's center of rotation, just had to reset it a couple of times, works fine now!! 2) the Ferrari F1 wheel add on, as cool as it is, Iv'e had two, as I found the paddles weren't the greatest of quality and over time, basically wore out to keep it simple, So i purchased the Open wheel add on (from the newer ts-pc racer) and now use that wheel on the t500 base, and love it!! perhaps a cheaper option if you're wanting a slightly better wheel, but a cheaper base!! Good Luck to newer sim racers, you'll love it, heaps of fun!! :) :)

A LOOOOOONG time ago I was involved with the very start of racing online. Papyrus software created the NASCAR series of "sim" games and they tested a online system using dial up modems called Hawaii. It was long distance and soon after they went live with it I joined a league on AOL. 3-5 guys in the league were the testers for Hawaii that was used as Papy's coded interface/system included in the sim/game.
When I graduated college in '98 - I got an expensive wheel/pedal set up for about $700 - all using potentiometers and no force feedback what so ever.... I did not do well - not having the G forces or the feedback on the pedals - I could never adjust....
Then I learned that the fastest guy in the league was......... wheelchair bound and played with........ a cheap joystick (and that didn't even twist). I hove NO freaking idea how he could do it but he had a lot of time to practise and the patience to practise...

My playseat challenge works really well with a thrustmaster T300. There is no movement in the important directions, only a little fore-and-aft pivot, which I eliminated by just letting the front of the wheel plate touch the edge of my monitor platform. Many people remain very satisfied with the playseat challenge after years of ownership.

I want to get into sim racing and it has been a childhood dream, but every time I try to take one step towards it, I take two steps back because of the lack of time. It wouldn't be a wise move to spend over 2 lacs on something you couldn't give time to. My guitar gear which costed me almost two kidneys is collecting dust since I'm not able to give it time.
Although I'll probably pick up a fanatec csw 2.5 and the compatible wheel with inverted pedals pretty soon.

    that cost comparison is REAL.
Here, where i live in the Caribbean, the first year purchase and setup for KART racing is about USD$5000 - $7000, and about $5000 per year after that. And that's just for the car and expendables.
That's a LOT of money. and I would STILL need a SIM kit.
They way i figured it, i could put that into a SIM kit and be up and running with top end gear

My tip if you are clamping to a desk don't use a typical office swivel chair.
use a fixed chair if you can, I've found that even a kitchen chair is better than something that can swivel
I guess it's similar to the flex problem of your wheel mount, movement in your chair is also a problem

  • @CalculatedRiskAK
    @CalculatedRiskAK 2 роки тому +1

Just letting you know, Next Level Racing has started including the optional strengthening kit for the wheel deck and pedal plate (for the F-GT) by default, which eliminates any forward/backward flex in my experience. The wheel and pedals are super solid in my F-GT, using a GT DD Pro and CSL Load Cell pedals. Now, I probably am never gonna upgrade to a DD1 or DD2, so it's unlikely that I'll be able to test it out with those.

I got my first racing wheel recently (g923). From what I've read from several sources the FFB is said to feel "a little notchy". I find this to be not at all the case. A more accurate description would be that it feels more like a car with broken struts in the front "sort of a clunky rattle". Otherwise its pretty smooth. And the strength is more than adequate. That said, it's the only FFB wheel I've ever used unless you wanna count those Daytona USA arcade machines from the early 90's.
I'd like to get a decent computer but all the specs just sound like gibberish to me. In afraid I'd go bald trying to figure out how to work it too. So I'm stuck in console where there arent very many sim titles if any.

The problem is, due to the lack of space, I want to put this set-up on my desk. I have a pretty solid gaming chair and the pedals with the loadcell would stand direcetly in front of a wall. Nevertheless I am bit scared that the desk-setup can not hold the pressure of the loadcell, but I think it will fit and if not, I buy some rubberbrakes for the rolls on my chair.
You helped me alot due to my disicion. Greetings from Germany :)

Great video Will! I always watch videos like these in case I've missed something silly despite the fact that I've been sim racing for nearly 30 years now. I've had a million different setups over the years, and I completely agree with the fundamentals you went through in this video. Looking forward to the next one!
Stay safe Will and your family too.

For beginners using Logitech and Thrustmaster wheel kits I HIGHLY recommend building a custom rig with plans from Ricmotech or alike. I'm using a Logitech G29 with inverted pedals using plans from Ricmotech and very much enjoyed the experience of building my own rig from scratch and modifying plans to suit my tastes. The best part is once your ready to upgrade the resale value of a complete starter rig is excellent. www.ricmotech.com/Build_your_own_racing_cockpit_s/1630.htm

U didn’t mention the most important part of pedals, what type of brake. Pedals w/ a load cell is the most imp or at least simulated (G29/ G920, T3PA). There are also aftermarket companies that have kits to simulate a load cell if UR pedals don’t have it, or do a better job. Also some pedals U can get a mod kit to make them load cell.

I started Sim Racing a few days ago with Fanatec CSL Elite Wheel and Pedals. Bought a Next Level Racing Wheel Stand too.
But I have problems to configure the Wheel. Don't know how to manage the sensitivity ingame and in the Wheel Menu. When I play ACC or F1 2019 the movement on screen is not the same. Would be great to get some tips.

I see this video is old but im new to the channel with high desire to have a semi realistic racing sim one day. I bought a wheel and pedals with a stick shift without knowing much and im afraid i wasted almost 200 bucks because its so hard to steer on. Hoping to learn alot from your channel. I bought a “speed drive” wheel and pedals. I feel like i got the cheapest junk you can buy which is embarrassing. Any other steering wheels that are worth buying that feel like a real steering wheel? I dont want to waste anymore money ):

I like to get into sim racing, last time i used a wheel in a videogame was in the ps1 era .. was some cheap 30bucks crap wheel (it was horrible :D). But im a guy if i buy something, i want some good stuff (not the best but good quality and a nice experience). So for me it would be something entry level dd, like the csl dd. But all combined it's easily over 1000bucks, for something i dont even know how much i would enjoy it. Sadly i know no one that has a setup, even a cheap one like a g29 or similar to test it.

Looking at getting my first sim rig for F1 (and maybe other racing games).
    I have a PS5.
I would love to base it around the Thrustmaster SF1000 wheel.
Would love some advice on what base, pedals and cockpit I could use.
It would probably need to be moveable as it will be set up in the main loungeroom.
Thanks for any hits and tips. :)

Thank you for a great review, Will! The lack of racing action during this quarantine time makes me want my first racing wheel.
Now I'd like to know how precise the G920 is from your point of view. I'll race a lot on oval and I'd hate it if turning the wheel a bit to correct the line doesn't make any difference because the wheel isn't sensitive enough.
G29 is on the top of my list for now, but seeing many real life drivers use a Fanatec in the e-sport races, I'm a sort of eyeing at them also. Anyway I won't be able to set a wheel stand let alone a cockpit in my room so they can't be for me TvT (will have to use a small table or workbench to put the wheel)

    • @boostedmedia
      @boostedmedia  4 роки тому +1

The FANATEC stuff is definitely more precise but not by a huge margin. You’ll be fine with a G29 to begin with :)

Until recently some of the worlds fastest were intentionally still using a G27. Also prob better to use a G29 or T300 if you want to get into invitational competitions since that’s likely what U’d be using there so less to adjust to.

If you have any sespific questions regarding the lodgitech g29/g920, thrustmaster TX Base with the pro pedals, thrustmaster shifter, and all of the fanatec wheels (csl elite, csw v2.5, and the dd2) since I've used all of these wheels at one time. please feel free to DM me on Instagram @jack_ivey. Hi Will, great videos! Im new to sim racing, I have g29 clamped on my desk, my pc is on the same desk nearby, i was playing my first few hours on assetto corsa, it started being 100% cpu load so i lowered graphics. I then had the pc shutdown and get stuck in a boot loop. I reseated the ram sticks and was able to boot again. Could it have been the vibrations of the wheel? Are there any other tests I can do to find out the cause please?
    Many thanks.
