  • Pedals, along with a solid mounting solution are generally regarded as single the most important component in a sim racing rig when it comes to turning fast and consistent lap times. So in today's video we'll take a closer look at all the things you need to know to make the right decision for your needs and budget.
    We'll look at the different types of pedals such as load cell, potentiometer and hall effect sensors, we'll talk about adjustability, pedal feel, ecosystems and much more.

    As a total newbie looking to get into sim racing, I'm stunned by how respectful and supportive the sim racing community appears to be overall. A far cry from the toxicity I'm used to seeing in other video game genres, particularly shooters.

    If you play with a desk and chair, there is a very cheap and easy solution when upgrading pedals. Mount the pedals to a piece of plywood, then cut holes that the wheels/legs of the chair can fit into. The downside is that you have to get it just right because you won't be able to move forward or back, but I did it and it works really well.

    • @karlmaier1013

      I put a bolt into the playwood and connected that bolt with a steel rope to my chair. The steel rope has a rope tensioner in its middle for adjusting the distance.
      Works great and I can press the break as hard as I want.
      The only downside is that when you press too much from above, your chair gets lifted up.

    Hi from France.
    Once again, very interesting video. I totally agree with you with the importance of how the mounting, I experienced it recently with upgrading from a rseat rs evo to a DIY-like JCL/motedis, I already knew my pedals mounting was not good (and now it is rockstable) but I re-discovered the effects from my wheelbase (a simple clubsport 2.5, not a direct drive)
    So yes, spending less on the hardware and more on the mounting/cockpit is really a good advice, even a terrible driver like me can tell the difference.

    Another great vid, Will! Enjoying going through many of your videos. It looks like your motion rig is only affecting your seat, not your whole cockpit, but surely that can't the be the case. I'm assuming it's just a weird effect of the filming. Having motion on the seat only would be super strange and very unsettling to the whole driving experience (like having a loose seat in your car wobbling around! :) ).

    I’m still running my T500rs with the original pedals. I haven’t really raced in my Obutto Ozone since GT6. I was too lazy to rearrange my Man Cave to play GT Sport. Now that GT7 is here for the next 5yrs or so, I am so out of “racing shape” LOL. I have the pedals mounted onto the pedal plate in the “GT” or inverted position. Inverting your pedals was all the rage 10yrs ago. But, now it seems like that cooled off and the majority of pedals are set in the “F1” orientation. I also used to have my brake pedal pretty stiff. Now that I’m 52, I don’t feel like having to really lay into it to get full braking. Same with the gas, I am finding myself pushing my leg to go full throttle rather than pivoting my ankle. I can’t recall if I’ve ever used the pedals in the down or F1 position. If I move the seat forward a click or two, then I’m too close to the pedals and I get soreness in my left ankle from resting my foot on the pedal. As for the brake pedal face, I’m using a custom made pedal face that spans the brake and clutch. I have zero internet in using a clutch. I tried it on my G25 and it was just nothing like driving a real clutch. So, I’m quite happy with sequential shifting.
    I can’t just simply flip the pedals around and press a couple of buttons. The pedals are oddly mounted to the Obutto pedal tray. I can’t find any inverted Vs regular pedal position videos to give me an idea of what to expect if I take my rig apart and flip them around.
    What are your thoughts on inverted Vs regular (or flat)?
    Thanks bud

    I really enjoy your sim racing channel: Informative, Articulate, Unbiased. I'm just getting into sim racing and trying 'slow my roll' and not jump in with both feet before deciding if it's something more than a quick fad for me (I've done this too many times and spent way too much $$$). My current setup is G29 w shifter, Playseat, ButtKicker and PS4. Sim is Project Cars 2. Goal now is to learn, practice and race with friends and family around the World. I would really appreciate some insight on gear that I could buy now to use with my console (PS4) that would transition to PC if/when I decide to get serious. No other company makes direct FANATEC compatible wheels, however there are some emulators available that allow you to mount a different quick release, and FANATEC also sell a universal hub that allows you to mount other wheels but with no button functionality.
      As for FANATEC wheel compatibility with different FANATEC bases, it’s all listed on their website.

    Almost all GT racing cars have standing pedal-boxes, even older ones like the Z4 GT3 never had hanging pedals. Same goes for all the TCR cars despite they "seem based on roadcars".
    I considered Wave Italy Imolas, but after checking out a couple of race cars, basically none have hanging pedals anymore these days.
    So hanging pedals only make sense if you want to drive an awful lot of old cars... ord just road cars. But modern race cars... I can't think of a single one at the moment with hanging pedals.

    Hi Will, does there have to be a shifter connected before a clutch is recognized in the software? I'm waiting for my dd wheel to get here (good luck on that right now), so I hooked up a T150 and used t3pa-pros with it but doesn't detect the clutch. To be honest though, you really have to spend on pedals, thx, these guides are bang-on.

    • @RafaelSilva-yv3oh
      @RafaelSilva-yv3oh 4 роки тому

      @@chrisd3510 I do not looove them. But with the conical brake mod they're a lot easier to control (how much you press the brake). But if I had to do it again, I would've gotten the Fanatec CSL Elite LC (emphasis on the LC) for $230 or now I guess you have the option of the Thrustmaster T-LCM for $200. But I feel the brake being a gradual changing position instead of a pressure sensor is a deterent. It was great when I started but now that I want to get better at trail braking and all that stuff (plus I try to compare and practice with my real life cars, 2 Subarus and a Porsche) I feel the lack of a realistic feeling brake pedal kinda sucks.

    When you get to PCs, can you cover how much computer you NEED to be able to run at high(er) quality on a 49" super wider monitor, triple screens, etc? I'm looking to purchase a gaming PC I'm having a hard time finding guidance on what is necessary and what is overkill. Particularly in relation to GPUs.

    • @csr7685
      @csr7685 4 роки тому

      Don't know if this is helpful, but I've had both setups with my PC. I had triple 4K monitors and switched over to a 49" 120 Hz 1440p ultrawide. I can play at pretty much max settings on the 49" and get ~100-120 fps in games like Project Cars 2 where they take advantage of things like SLI. Other games like Forza Horizon 4 and Forza Motorsport 7 only use one GPU and are pegged at 100% to get 85-120 fps at ultra settings. With 3x monitors using Nvidia surround I was rarely able to get 60 fps with resolution at 4K in PC2 so I lowered the resolution to 1440p or 1080p to get 60fps stable. If you're looking at getting one 49" ultrawide then you'd probably need at least a 2080/2080 Super to take advantage of the monitor's refresh rate. My CPU is rarely at more than 25% load during these games so that's definitely overkill.

      i9-9900K
      Asus Z390
      32 GB RAM 3200MHz
      Games on Samsung 860 Evo 2TB SSD
      2x Asus ROG STRIX GTX 1080 Ti (HB SLI Bridge)
      Samsung CRG90 49" 1440p 120 Hz Ultrawide

      @@edac5681 I only need it for video editing. For gaming it's overkill. The streaming might be using a lot of RAM, but if you're below 90% usage I wouldn't worry about it.

    I’m so lost. Im newish to sim racing 3 months (Iracing) came from (Ps4 Nascar).I have the T300 & use the stock peddles I made a wood rig. & I want/feel like I need to upgrade. For the biggest reason. Is I can’t feel the car break loose. Now idk if it’s the wood rig or settings or just the T300. So like you said the peddles are the most important add. I do more GT3 & Audi Rs3 & Mazda series. That being said being newish to Iracing what peddles would you recommend?. I think I like a soft peddle if that helps. Thanks & great content.

    Not ideal but for a nice cheap solution, I have my pedals stuck on top of a cardboard box with double sided tape to stop them moving, butted up against another taller cardboard box that is in turn against a wall, and shoes on my desk chair wheels to stop it rolling (2 bigger shoes on the front 2 spokes, 2 smaller shoes on the side spokes and nothing on the back, which gives the chair a nice backwards tilt as well). Definitely a poor man's sim rig, but leagues above floor mounted pedals like you talk about where you use your ankle to "stomp" the pedal rather than nice controlled pressure using your leg muscles.
    I just need to find a way of stopping my chair from swivelling if anyone has a suggestion for that?

    Other than those like you here online I don't know anyone who has a steering wheel and or a pedal set that even races on console or in sim racing ,so I have no way of comparing my pedal setup to theirs or the type of pedal setups your'er talking about when it comes to things like how much break pressure is being used to get maximum breaking before lock up . I don't have a way of gauging that with my pedal's that I have . But I am using the g27 pedals with the g29 steering wheel because they are setup in the gt style already and I like the style better than the stock g 27 or g 29 version but I didn't like the way they felt not being able to get that muscle memory use from it . So I replaced the throttle pedal spring with a stiffer 25 lb compression spring did the same with the clutch pedal and I put a 45 lb. 1 1/4 in . compression spring in a rubber tube lubricated inside a 3 1/4 in compression spring that is also inside a rubber tube and lubricated and I also put 1/2 inch rubber bumper at each end of the brake spring and it has made a world of a difference in being able to use muscle memory verses the stock Logitech pedal version . I have to stand on the breaks hard to get lockup and at the higher speeds it almost impossible for me to get the breaks to lockup but I do feel them grab and release where the tires lockup and release like with ABS but I also get that same type of feeling even when i don't have ABS on but its just a little less of that feeling where the breaks grab just a bit more but don't totally lockup . But I don't know how they compare to higher end or load cell pedals or what they feel like. I wish I knew someone who even had a wheel and pedal set besides just those like you who I know I will never meet in person outside of online from your video's you do . I'm sure they are better than what I am using but for now mine feel good I just wish I had a little more throw in the pedals than I do with them .
