  • When you're working with a natural substance like wood sometimes you find things you weren't expecting, like knots, cracks, or bug holes. A decision has to be, should you try to hide it or accentuate it?
    On this episode of The Fix, Jory shows us a few different options for fixing cracks and filling holes in wood. Wood putty, tinted epoxy or cyanoacrylate glue, or glue and sawdust, lots of options for lots of different situations. Which is your favorite?

    Garry not Linda. One thing I learned many years ago is unless the project is lathe turned is to not do any filling or repairing until after any staining or coloring is done and at least the first coat of sanding sealer has been applied. If you wait until that point in the process your fill will match the surrounding wood much better and you stand less chance of discoloration or glazing of the surrounding wood. Before the advent of pin nailers most finish carpenters did all of the varnishing and finishing before making any repairs and with several colors of putty mixed filler that would become nearly invisible.

    What is the point of adding black to filler? Seems it would accentuate the crack.

    How does TB III work with stain or finish when you sand it wet?
