8:22 makes the car more aerodynamic by letting out air trapped in the wheel arches-> reduced air pressure - > reduced air pressure gradient ->reduced drag coefficient & less lift (more down force at the front)

    • @Waltherwermuth7001
      @Waltherwermuth7001 2 роки тому +3

Nahh its not really about the drag. As Andreas Preuniger Head of GT Department said in a podcast they have to do it, because of the amount of downforce at the back of the Car when it comes to RS models. It is necesarry because otherwise the Balance of the Car would suck.

Hey Doug, just FYI: the logo on the front hood is not only a decal for weight reasons, it's also because embedding it in the carbon fiber hood would increase cost and complicate manufacturing. It's not impossible, just cheaper that way. The put it on every carbon fiber front hood.

Porsche saw Singer and realized that the collectible nature of min-maxxed cars is off the charts. E.g. what would happen if you put the best of everything available to Porsche on any given model? GT3RS engine/Trans/suspension/brakes on the 718 model. It's fabulous. It's like the 914-6. Those values are insane right now.

I agree with just about everything you’ve said, I have a 2009 Cayman S that is a complete track car, stripped out interior coil over suspension yada yada yada. I was dying to get my hands on a GT four with a PDK, and was looking forward to this car as well. When I saw that they were basically going to be unobtainable for at least a couple of years, I went and bought a 2019 GT3RS. It’s quite a special car, I don’t regret my choice. And I still have my Cayman. The wife and I both track our cars, and we do about 50 to 60 track days a year.

Absolutely love this car! I've always been a GT3 RS fan but this is focus driven like Doug said. It's a better track version of a GT3 RS. Some will hate me for saying that but the Mid engine really makes a different with performance. Less chance of oversteer or the rear sliding out on you cause the weight is centralized between the axles. I've only just found this new version of the 718 GT4 RS recently and I love it every bit of it. Doug said it rides terribly when you're on street and it's true, but nobody buys a car like this for the "Comfort". They buy it for show pieces(which I'm not a fan of) or they buy it to fulfill its racing heart. Porsche always has my heart. ❤

Having had my 2022 PDK GT4 for 4 mths now... Regarding the suspension harshness, at least on the GT4 (probably the GT4 RS as well), the main issue I feel isn't harshness, it's the damping. I found my GT4 to be quite unstable at high speed on CA crappy/broken pavement roads.
The car moves around waaay too much. The compression is dialed too high and the rebound is under damped. I also found the front-end didn't "talk" well with what the rear-end was doing when the suspension is handling some of the larger bumps. The factory PASM suspension on the GT4 and probably RS are designed for smooth roads and tracks, not US crappy/broken pavement roads.
I added MCS 2-way remote dampers to mine and it helped A LOT to make it much more stable at speed when the roads were less than perfect and made the front-end and rear-end a lot more cohesive with each other.

The former Top gear host tested the 911 Dakar and said he regretted baying the 911 GT something because the Dakar was MUCH more fun to drive with it soft high ride height and low grip gravel tires on tarmac. Cars that make good lap times on track is rarely fun cars to drive on normal roads...
Most fun car to drive I ever had was a Opel Ascona B 1,9SR from 1976 with 90hp and rear wheel drive :) I bought in 2001 for 550$. Now a car like that cost 20.000 to 40.000 $ so I am instead of getting a new one like that getting a used Porsche Cayman as those now cost the same...

The magnesium wheels are expensive for many reasons but the logistics when manufacturing them are pretty insane. The magnesium billets are cast in the UK, they are forged and finish machined in Japan, then they are coated in Germany. That's a lot of travel. The magnesium roofs, which is available on the 911 GT3 RS and other RS models, is cast and rolled in South Korea (was finish rolled in the US at one point), formed and coated in Canada and then shipped to Germany. Just some insight on these magnesium supply chains.

If you think about it, the closer you get to a race car - think series like GT cars from Porsche, GT-R cars from Mercedes - you inevitably lose most of the car's everyday functionality. The comfort goes down, the quality of materials is lower to save weight, but what you gain is a car that drives significantly better, accelerates more agressively. It's a trade-off. As Doug said, this car is for the people who want track-focused car 95% of the time. Everyone else is much better off aiming for a lower-tier Cayman, which is slower, but has all the quality of life equipment and characteristics.

Good review as always. The GT4 RS is a very nice car, but I am not sure I am feeling the potential $250+k price tag for this car would be considered a good value. Particularly when you have several cars with similar or better performance characteristics (ie., GTR, ZO6) with less expensive price tags. I get the current market and its associated markups, but even still $250K for a Cayman, you'd lose money in that investment. Those who would buy this car over $200k, are lovers of Porsche more than lovers of performance.

The GT4 cayman is the best "value" performance porsche at ~110-120k after options. It can go between track and street with no worries, you could daily drive it I guess, if you don't have a family. You could option it out for a really comfy interior, or go bare bones and make it a track monster. If you're looking at a car as an investment you're removing joy from the equation. Get on some wait lists, take factory/dealer reps out to crazy parties and buy and sell Lambos and Ferraris, I guess. This car is a step above the GT4 for someone who wants a dedicated track car and for whom the increase in price has no meaning.

As much as a manual would be fun and add a new driving dimension, I feel that the PDK sound character is more befitting of that high revving 4.0. The manual doesn't have that "punchiness" that is like a drum beat to a perfect song. You lose that with the manual. The PDK is a lot more similar to the gearbox found in the GT4 race car, and to have that in your garage to use when and where you feel like, is a privilege.

  • @tylerwelker
    @tylerwelker 2 роки тому +1

Okay what? We need to dissect the Doug Score here. How in the world is styling of the GT4RS the same rating as the GT4? I know a quirk was the 6 logos for the RS, but remove the door decals, my dream build wouldn't have those on it. It's an RS, so I would assume that styling should be higher than, IF NOT AT LEAST ON PAR, was the GT3 (okay the GT3 touring is sexy and I get that, I would put styling for it at an 8, keep normal GT3 at 7, and match the touring with the GT4RS at a score of 8 (you know this makes sense).
The cool factor for this car should be a 10. I live in north scottsdale right by all the dealerships. I see multiple aventadors, 488's, mclarens, rolls royce, and GTxxx Porsches, MINUS THE GT4 OR RS. This car is more rare, more unique, and more cool. I've seen multiple GT2RS' in scottsdale and while I know they've been out longer, i still have yet to see a GT4RS in the wild, but doesn't that prove my point? This car is rare, and going to be an IFKYK car. I've drooled walking past GT4's and my non-car friends have no clue why I love it so much.
So since this is an RS car, and extremely rare, cool factor is an automatic 9. ITS A CAYMAN WITH A GT3 SOURCED ENGINE. THAT'S SO COOL... PORSCHE DID THIS FOR US! The only way this could be a 10 is if they did two things. Add ventilated seats without compromising weight or performance (I live in AZ, sue me), and maybe something like a carbon roof. For me that was my favorite part of the older M6's, plus it's laden with carbon already.
Again, how does quality suffer here in comparison to the GT4? This is Porsche, the Hummer of race cars. Make it on par with the GT4 at a 9. And features the same as a GT4? You have air intakes in the rear windows to hear induction. You have a GT3 engine in the back. These two features alone should give it a +1 just due to the fact that no other car has this. 911 purists can't debate (at least the motor) anymore against the 718. I guess though these features are based on daily practicality, I just would very much rather drive an RS over a GT4 as a daily because, well, PDK.
So adding this back up the Doug Score should be:
    Styling: 8
    Cool Factor: 9
Wknd Total: 44 (right below the GT2RS, right where God intended it to be),
    Features: 7
    Quality: 9
    Daily: 28
    Total: 72
Tied for first place. Call me crazy but I would rather drive this over a Ferrari. But that's due to my disdain for Ferrari ever since Nick Cage walked into a dealership and told the dealer that he needed one because he saw too many of them in the starbucks parking lot in Gone in 60 Seconds, which i feel is on brand for what I think Ferrari owners are. Maybe dock one point on features because the features I listed aren't for daily use, though i'd use them daily, so sure, adjust it for that, have it at 71.
Sorry I just really love the GT4RS.

I got 3 laps in one of these on a track day (thanks baby!). Truly a bucket list car.
I am a hard core manual fan, but this PDK is amazing and makes so much more sense for this trim level than a manual.
Back to real world if I were to purchase a Cayman/Boxster, it would be much closer to the entry level car with a stick of course.
If you get a chance to do a track day in one of these, pull out the credit card and do it!

I'm not a car engineer myself, but as I hear almost every trained car guy say: Reducing rotational mass is one of the most effective ways to make a car drive better/safer/quicker . That's why all these "weight-reduced" moving parts are so much more expensive in return for the net weight they save.
It's kinde the same with weight reduced cam shafts (other materials). They are on the one hand more sturdy to withstand more power but they are sometimes even lighter to increase power-output themselfs. 12:52 Magnesium wheels

Deserves more than a 2 for Practicality, with the two cargo areas.
PS: You've always hated on 914s. The 914 was the ancestor that led directly to this. You should really drive one.

Part of being a Porsche fanboy like all journalists are is being a snob towards the "Volkswagen" cars like the 914 and the 924. Nevermind how the 914/6 was this, it just didn't resemble a smaller 911.

The Porsche flat-6 sounds like an air raid siren on four wheels, love it!

I love the fact that everyone in the automotive world knows the Cayman is a better drivers car than the Carrera, but Porsche is too stubborn to admit it
