Sam, you really are next level at the moment mate. The content, the topics, the camera angles and quality alone are best on UA-cam but your view of life and how you use and enjoy cars is soo inspiring. I’ve done so many driving holidays the last few years and enjoyed life soo much doing things inspired by you ……. More twiggy ;)
Absolutely agree - always enjoyed Sam’s channel and podcast since I found them during his world tour, but as you say, whole different level at the moment. STG is always one of first three videos I watch if I am catching up!
Man - your take on the visual appeal is EXACTLY what was going through my head as I was watching along - you verbalised my inner debate perfectly! I genuinely cannot believe the quality of your videos that you achieve by yourself - honestly mind blowing…! Keep up the incredible work - amazing.
I love the subtleness of the GT3 Touring. I never fashioned myself a RS person either. That is until I started driving them. Now I find each of us has a bit of a different threshold for where that Jekyll and Hyde line sits. Although I love the aesthetics of the 911, the small intimate nature and near perfect ergonomic layout of the 718 interior just pulls and reminds you more of the older 911’s than the more bloated, current versions. I’m finding now that one should have a non-RS Porsche, as well as a RS one in the garage at all times. Heck, there are 7 days in a week-perhaps a different one for each day, right?🤦🏻♂️
I agree with you, but hands down, I'd take this over a GT3 (PDK) everyday. The only reason I'd choose the 911 is to have the manual. I'm over the whole "it's not a 911" thing. Mid-engined is just better, fact. I personally like the looks of the Cayman better, too.
We just need to appreciate his filmography skills. He's not just a UA-camr with an iPhone, he puts so much time into the camera angles and shots to create beautiful footage
Before watching the video I’m wondering about your angle? Why on earth would you try to daily a GT4RS for a week? I picked up mine Friday and have done the 1500km break in period on Scandinavian B-roads during the last 3 days. Today 9000rpm was unleashed and my hearing still suffers😂 The GT4RS is an absolute run riot heavy metal band on a leash at all times. The car was invented in 1886 with the Lohner-Porsche, and it ends with the GT4RS as the pinnacle of driving fun. Of course the coming 992GT3RS is faster and a lot more of a technological tour de force as it should be, but that just makes m case, and yours to loose. The Cayman GT4RS will out-fun any car on the planet any time. It’s surprisingly analog and hilariously old school. BUT, during the 1700kms I’ve been doing since Friday in the GT4RS, so be learnt that the ride comfort is just excellent, and the seats are amazingly comfortable. I can even use the sport setting on the suspension for long durations if so desired. The 3 drawbacks with the car is except price and availability: 1) rear view limited. I could be having a cop trailing me and I wouldn’t know until the siren came on. 2) side view visibility, you need the co-pilot to give thumbs up in tight intersections. 3) tyre noise on bad road surfaces, but this is the same for the 911 also. Motoring ends with the GT4RS. No need to look further, and compared to the coming GT3RS and Ferraris is actually a bargain! Happy days❤
I have a ‘22 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 in Frozen Berry Metallic (I think there was a GT4 in the same color when you picked up the GT4 RS). I daily drive her, but every weekend I’m up around 5:45 and take her out for a ride. Quiet roads, no urgency, just me and my car. Amazing
Those downshifts at the 20:43 mark… OMG, I just cannot get enough of the sound! Really appreciate your perspective! I am turning Sixty today and am really looking forward to be a Hooligan!
Nice filming. You could make exactly the same argument about your new GT3, “really need to rev it out…a little too firm for the road…on track this thing would be fantastic…you have to drive this car like a hooligan”.
Sam's productions are beyond next level. Hard to fathom all the effort needed to bring such great content in a consistent, polished package. My vote for next Top Gear host.
nice in-depth test. Unbelievable, 10 minutes before you went into the sound and the speed range, I had exactly the same thoughts. Incredible, like telepathy. I also feel that the range of the sound is relatively small, and then just before the end of the speed, for a speed window of maybe 500 revolutions, there is a peak in the sound that is really emotional. In my opinion it is also clearly too late, which means that you have to keep accelerating. With the Ferrari 360, for example, it opens from 3-4000 revolutions, which makes more sense for my emotions.
I think you’re missing the point a little bit with this car though. It’s not a car to live with, you have other Cayman versions for that. As you said, it’s a toy and you should use it as something to have fun with. Maybe that doesn’t suit everyone’s garages. You made some very interesting points though and the video is great as always! 👏🏻
I get it. RS cars aren’t supposed to be for every day use. But there are plenty of videos of this car on great roads being thrashed. I wanted to see what it was like in other situations. Thanks for watching and for the feedback
Nice attempt at a contrary point of view. But it’s an RS - I think we knew before your video that if you attempt to measure against criteria for which it was not designed, it might feel compromised. But measure it on great driving roads and on track and it’s epic. So the conclusion for me was obvious before you started. It was never intended as a daily driver nor is that why someone would buy it. Frankly I wouldn’t have a base GT4 as a daily driver either. AP says the 4RS was built as a fun car for road and track and they appear to have nailed that brief. My order is in and I’ll be keeping my X5 for daily driving duties.
The best thing about being a taste maker is that YOU set the opinion, the opinions and views of others aren't important. In that, just because the mob says a 911 is the top shelf car and the Cayman/Boxster is something less, even if it's not. It's all gate keeping and snobery.
Having been a member of Porsche GB this last 8 months I've realised there are a lot of Porsche owners who are lucky enough to have multiple cars and will have a GT car for regular track days. Me myself, can only afford to enjoy mine on the country roads. So I get your point, but the RS cars really are used mostly on the track, where all those "extra bits" make a massive difference.
Sam, you and the rest of the UK guys are making such great content. I’m sure you’ve seen what’s happening here in the states, I won’t ask you to comment on it but it’s tragic and I wish car culture here was better. Keep making great content
The 718 GTS is where it’s at. 400 HP flat six out of a 911 with 6 speed manual. No ridiculous body panels, wings, or racing setup. Truly ultimate daily driver.
Sam I love that you can say "its not for me". For a fair bit less you could have the same aural experience (almost) with Cayman GTS. It will have a more supple ride and be more useable on a daily basis.
@@seenthroughglass I’ve got one on the way. No Weissach on it as I prefer the plainer look. Also I’ll save the money for a Manthey Racing kit which will actually improve performance as opposed to be a cosmetic kit.
I agreed with you mate. After all, you want to be able to drive the car as much as you can and enjoy the whole thing -- daily driving. I drive a 911 CS for daily and it's capable of going through most of the road at ease. But doing the same thing with a 911 GT3 RS wouldn't be as much fun because the suspension would be too harsh and too hard first of all. 2ndly you would be constantly worrying about damaging the car, which is going to take away all the fun.
Had my Carrera 4S keyed all down the passenger side in the Waitrose car park. Lesson for the day: park your Porsche as far away from anyone else. Unfortunately I did follow my own advice but was still surrounded by the time I returned.
I’ve owned a 981 GT4 here in the US since new in late 2015, and have been waiting for years for this to come out with a deposit at my dealer. Finally it was released - yah! But the bad news - $100K markup!! That’s for a 25 year customer of Porsche who has bought 9 cars. Now about a year later, my time on the list was coming up, and my dealer said as a “favor” they could knock it down to $60K. In the mean time Porsche has quietly had two price increases on these cars, which now adds another $10K to the price. So, with medium options, the car is $250K with markup. As much as I wanted it, that price is a hard nope. So, still wanting to obtain a Porsche with that glorious 4.0L Motorsport motor, I ended up buying a beautiful 1 owner CPO 2018 GT Silver 991.2 GT3 with PCCB’s, carbon buckets, etc with 2300 miles for $195K. I absolutely love this car, and to be honest I think it all worked out for the best. For me, the extra interior room, complete gauges, more aggressive stying and presence, installed Sharkwerks rear muffler bypass for an epic sound, and proven resale make it a winner.
Great video Sam. Can't wait for your GT3. If they ever release a manual version of this (I know they won't) it'll be 911R all over again. Some ballsy guy in the US will make a modded manual and it will be the best car in the world then.
Sam, British butter is available... Love the fact you still get a proper door handle on the Cayman, first point of contact, its the little things that matter....edit again, oh hello, proper cup holders 👌
I agree Sam that car sounds better from inside than outside as far as i can tell with your video Keep the videos coming, thank you! Also mr.jwws gt4 in purple is absolutely stunning
For me I think the GT4.0 with a manual gearbox is the sweet spot. A 4L six in the mid-engine Caman or better yet the Boxster. Better driving car than the 911. A lot less money. Only issue is the tall gears. That can be changed.
Wow. I loved the 8 minute clip with the music, the exhaust and the scenic. absolutely perfect combination if you ask me!! actually this video was really fun to watch. Keep up the work!
Amazing video Sam! Love the content here. But also amazing video work, nice smooth transitions and very very cool shots. Great in-depth test of the car and how it really is. T.b.h. I really really really want one now though... Keep up the great work with STG and BTG!
I love the “watch the drink” ride quality metric. 😂 Genius. The “below the 911” bit was a fail. The 4RS is a great car in its own right, and to be discouraged by (a rapidly vanishing) “911 is a better car” elitism is to be a member of it. I have a 718 spyder, and I bow to no other Porsche (except maybe a 918 lol). I do admit it looks a bit…gimmicky, but to your point. That’s probably just because we’re not used to seeing a cayman in full aero. The 3RS is not any less gimmicky, but we’re just used to seeing them in race settings more, so are used to it, I guess. I’m actually quite bummed the spyder rs looks like it will be stuck with all the same front end aero as the 4RS, which will look even more out of place on that car (not like I could get near one, though). Keep the shiny side up
How funny, had a work experience at Porsche HQ a few weeks ago and visited Podium at the same time. Unfortunately not in a GT4 RS. But still very cool. Great video Sam!
Imagine my surprise Sam when I was driving casually past the Porsche dealer in Limoges and saw they have a used 911GT3 new model in shark blue. 4000kms and 250,000 euros. Wow it looked stunning.
i have a early Cayman, very practical GT car. use it every day, do work stuff in it , tools, and stuff. great car. would have a newer one if i could efford it.
Good review. And I agree: Non-Weissach looks way better. I have one of these on order - coincidentally, in racing yellow - and I did it without Weissach.
When I watch these videos, I always think about how it’s probably a pain in the ass to have to come back and pick up the camera and the tripod that did the shot…
I really do appreciate the video but I am not sure anybody has said it is the 'perfect' car....some may have said it is the perfect sports car (which I disagree with) but not the perfect car. Now...back to enjoying the video. Great work Sam and team
I had never seen your channel before, but I really enjoyed this "Living with a GT4 RS" you know, to see the reality of this car other than it being amazing on track 🙌 (Oh, and I'm also not an RS guy 😅) And I would also prefer that regular GT4 at the end of the video :)
I agree regarding the looks. Some of these latest RS cars from Porcshe look like a bad day at Halfords. I'd take a non-RS 718 Cayman GT4 all in black with black wheels any day.
First time watching the channel, great video Sam! Nice to see it being driven on the streets and not the track. Since this car came out, I always felt something about the looks of it wasn’t popping..and you nailed it. I’m always asking myself, this or GT3 in manual. 718 has the amazing sound inside, and from what I gather might be better suited for someone that’s not so tall (5’6). Other hand, 992 is well…that and has the manual option. I’ve driven neither, and don’t even know why I bother thinking about this as I’ll never have finds for it lol. Guess I just like to dream. Wish Porsche would lend me a car to drive for the weekend..heck even for a day..
Sam I think you may find the 992 gt3 will be just as stiff on small roads. The one to have will be the RS Spyder...all day long the RS 991 is lovely. Tony knows bug all as the Roma is a bit knobby
GTS 4.0 manual is all you need for southern England’s roads. Love mind but it’s just too busy with an increasing vehicle population and is also a licence eater at 82mph in second.
Hi Sam, great video and its great to see you in the cotswolds. I've lived there since a kid and yes, it does have some of the best driving roads in the UK. Chaos.
maybe its the age but i came to the conclusion that as my daily i want something very comfortable, even luxurious, yet sporty looking (s class coupe, bmw 6 or 8 series coupe) and for the summer weekend fun you have one of porsches gt products.
I like how the smoothie becomes a g-meter! They should ad some bulb, half filled with some shiny liquid instead of the silly clock on the dash as an extra, as an analog g-meter. I mean you, especially you could take a girl with long flowing hair along. Her hair might do the job as well?
Sam you’re the best mate, curious to why you don’t have more subs!!! Maybe you could try doing some more videos with other UA-cams to gain access to new viewers and vice versa.
that is a volcanic roar in that last gasp of the engine - but then.... were not used to 9K these days! Go back in time bit and you'll get plenty of that before the outdated stability tech puts you in a bush haha
I have these conversations frequently, so many cars that I think are cool and could see why someone would love one, but personally I wouldn’t buy. That’s said, if I could get hold of one, I’d be all over a GT4 RS.
Sam, you really are next level at the moment mate. Absolutely agree - always enjoyed Sam’s channel and podcast since I found them during his world tour, but as you say, whole different level at the moment. STG is always one of first three videos I watch if I am catching up!
If an RS would be ideal as a daily, we would demand something more hardcore. Let’s keep the RS’es as toys, on and off track.
Great episode.

The sound of the Porsche naturally aspirated flat six never gets old love the videos Sam

Except the gt3 is a manual, so it's engaging in other ways as well. Also not a stiff.

I really do appreciate the video but I am not sure anybody has said it is the 'perfect' car....some may have said it is the perfect sports car (which I disagree with) but not the perfect car.
Now...back to enjoying the video. Great work Sam and team
Maybe the incoming Spyder “RS” is more your cup of tea
Really in your element right now man! fantastic videos back to back
I had never seen your channel before, but I really enjoyed this "Living with a GT4 RS" you know, to see the reality of this car other than it being amazing on track 🙌 (Oh, and I'm also not an RS guy 😅)
And I would also prefer that regular GT4 at the end of the video :)
Agree. For UK, mainly road use, I'd take the GT4.
For a track junkie, or on European billiard table tarmac, RS may be better.
Lol neat idea with the drink! Something most people can relate to 👍👍
I’m sure Dan Prosser used those roads for his road tests too.
I agree regarding the looks. Some of these latest RS cars from Porcshe look like a bad day at Halfords. I'd take a non-RS 718 Cayman GT4 all in black with black wheels any day.
Nice to see you back in my neck of the woods Sam. Recognise the scenery. I’m not a Porsche lover but I do love the look and sound of that.
That video was just a masterclass 👏🏻👏🏻
19:21 and unlike the new 911, this thing still has the good Porsche cupholders.
Fantastic review as always. So relatable and real. I would have it painted normally too. The carbon bits just don’t do it for me. But, what a car.
Got to be one of the best sounding new cars available. Absolutely insane! Great video as always 👍
Sam, these videos are always so good, best channel on UA-cam ❤
Sam I think you may find the 992 gt3 will be just as stiff on small roads. The one to have will be the RS Spyder...all day long the RS 991 is lovely. Tony knows bug all as the Roma is a bit knobby
Gt4 rs with some custom adaptive coilovers that you could ease back on the harshness more than the standard seams like the perfect solution
GTS 4.0 manual is all you need for southern England’s roads.
Love mind but it’s just too busy with an increasing vehicle population and is also a licence eater at 82mph in second.
Brilliant Sam. Only you to show reality of our daily lives of how these great cars fit in.... Or not
Another car that needs thrashing to enjoy, so much fun at low speeds. Great review
4:00 I felt that
Hi Sam, great video and its great to see you in the cotswolds.
Sam your videos are on another level
Do you think you'd have more fun in a smaller more nimble car on UK country roads like an MX5 ND, Lotus Exige or Caterham?
Definitely not in an mx5 they are painfully slow
With you on the looks, didn’t really notice it was the GT4RS at Podium till you pointed it out, the sound though…..
I like how the smoothie becomes a g-meter! They should ad some bulb, half filled with some shiny liquid instead of the silly clock on the dash as an extra, as an analog g-meter. I mean you, especially you could take a girl with long flowing hair along. Her hair might do the job as well?
Morning Sam! You are the best!😊
The spec of that GT4 is mad!
Awesome video. Hopefully that is real sound and not synthetic. Would be interesting to see one without the packs.
Sam, when your YT channel takes nose dive. You can always double as Prince Williams double. Work will definitely pick up more when he becomes king 🤴
Another top video and one in which I recognise the roads! Newbury, Lambourn via Ashdown House, the North Wessex Downs etc.
