What an iconic photo! Tool and Alice In Chains are two of my favorite bands ever. It's truly a miracle that Maynard, Adam, Justin, and Dany managed to avoid the pitfalls of stardom, stay clean, and continue to make incredible music decades later.
Alice in Chains at Bumbershoot in the summer of 1990 was the greatest show that I've ever seen. A clueless 20 year old roaming Seattle. God damn the late 80s/early 90s were great.
I've seen Tool three times in the past four years. The first two times, Maynard wore riot gear and barely moved. But that last show in Indianapolis, he was just like he was back in the mid 90s. Like a much younger man, he was. But I would kill to have been able to see Alice in Chains at the same show. The real AiC, with Layne Staley.

These two have been my favorite bands for a while, and only recently have I realized some musical similarities between them. And even more recently I realized they were friends. That's cool
Maynard has stated that it's not about "Engaging with the audience" and more about focusing on the sound. He doesn't stand front center stage because the drums, guitar, amps etc bleed out his microphone and vocals. Standing to the left and right of the drums gives the advantage for a better sound and show.
Literally everyone tried to help Layne but sadly he was beyond help. All the tensions and animosity in AIC was due to Laynes drug abuse and frustration from within the band of him not getting help, not even from the financial perspective but as friends.
I wonder if Layne was still alive all the collaboration he might of done with Maynard. There are alot of tool songs where Layne's voiced would of shined. Maynard seems like the type of person that Layne would get along with.
I saw Maynard take the stage first with just Chris Cornell to play a Elvis Costello song to calm down a crowd that was nearly ready to riot, as they--we--thought the show might be cxled because of weather. After they did "Peace, Love and Understanding" as an acoustic duet, Tom Morello, Dave Navarro, James Iha, and Stephen Perkins all came on, and they played "Watching the Detectives," "Seven National Army," and "Ring of Fire," which with the extended solos and a couple extra choruses, went on for about 15 min. It was amazing, of course, but it still doesn't sound as cool as Lane Staley and MJK on stage together.
