Alice in Chains (1993) Interview

- A rare Alice In Chains interview in 1993 surfaced on the internet in recent days.
In the video, which shows the band at a press conference in Finland, Layne Staley and company discuss the departure of bassist Mike Starr, then President Bill Clinton, the tour with Metallica and various other subjects.
One highlight of the interview is the band’s “prediction” about Seattle’s emerging grunge scene, which was at a high point in the 1990s.
At 13:00, just watch him breathe. There was air coming in and out of his body. I know that’s obvious but just think about it. This was 1993, only 9 years short years later he’d be sitting dead on his couch for two weeks before anyone found him. Absolutely heartbreaking. There is help out there! Please please, your life is worth too much to fall on the same line as Layne (and many others) did. You are loved and you are worthy of living a life full of joy. Please reach out to someone you trust.
Thank you. I needed to read that.
@@bennetttyler6019 the most important step is always the next one! 💛
As a former Heroin junkie, clean 6 1/2 years. It seems hopeless in it, but as you get further away, it gets easier. I thank the lord i didn't have unlimited $$$ like Layne, or i woukd've most likely been found isolated, on a couch dead as well. He was very open about it toward the end, hence the AIC album w the 3 legged dog(obviously a metaphor for tje band) almost a tribute to their friend who was dying, really. Like the film 'Trainspotting' said " choose life" if you get in deep w Heroin, you have to choose, quit and you could live a fulfilling life, keep using you WILL 💯die a premature death
Yes my girl friend has been addicted to Ice for like 4 years now! She knows she needs to quit it. It's so frustrating. I don't want her to die!! She's been my bff for 9 years now
he looks very healthy and in very good spirits here!! 😭
Layne was very funny, but shy and soft spoken. He looks so young and healthy here. It's uncanny that someone that soft spoken could belt out such powerful vocals.
Agreed ❤
Yess, his soft talking voice is a huge contrast to his powerful singing
The meek inherit the earth
Same with Kurt. 😔
Why Are All These Grunge Interviews So Relaxing To Watch ?
If drugs can take down this beautiful young man in his prime, they can take you out too. Don't make the same mistake.
I have a good friend who really addicted right now but won't admit to himself. It's hard to watch and hard to be around him. Drugs suck man. I would know but thankfully I straightened my life out.
Staley sent out his warning 💔
I've been there...heroin is damn near impossible to kick. The pain from the withdrawal is unbearable. I've been clean for a few years now, fortunately....
the thing is, it comes from a greater problem in our society
Theres no place for weird people, different people.
The artists I should say!
We view the world differently and arent able to see it other way, but we are forced into functionning with a straight and calm mind, to fit in the square of corporate society
Drugs offer us the warmth nobody allows us, the escape needed for the mind to feel at home in a place that feels like just like the opposite
@@satanictaffy congratulations on staying sober for so long, I can only imagine how hard that must be ❤
Hard to believe that such a monster voice would come out of a guy with such a soothing speaking voice.
IKR, his voice was gentle and soft
Maynard James Keenan is the same way
Watching Layne in this interview brings tears to my eyes. He looks so happy, hopeful, and healthy. He has a glow about him, and honestly when he speaks you want to listen. Seeing him like this, and then watching the MTV Unplugged session kills me. Drugs are a horrible thing.
Heroin especially is brutal
Maybe he was not joking when he said they sold their souls to satan @ 07:35 - like its said as part of the enterntainment industry as a whole.
@@nurmonprinssi3335 That is a great point. Something to really think about.

I agree. Jerry is a common man's man as well.
Absolutely, I feel a lot of people overlooked that of him.
Well, he is a genius, simple as that. One of the best at what he does
When I was a naive teen, Layne was a beautiful rockstar. Now that I'm a mother, he is a beautiful broken boy, delicate soul, I wish I could hug. F***. What a loss.
It's fascinating how life changes perspective over time.
That's exactly how I feel. His story haunts me every day. I just can't.
Beautiful sentiment
Feel the same, 100%. I’ve got a little boy who’s just turning 5, and Layne’s got such a sweet face I can’t help seeing the little boy he once was, just like my son. Sometimes I can’t even watch these things, knowing what happened to him 💔
Layne's smile is breathtaking! He looked so good back in 93, its such a shame the heroin demon took hold of him. God Speed Layne!!

OMG! Layne was so handsome! Sometimes people are born, beautiful inside and out, everything about them is breathtaking: face, voice, charisma, appearance. And then they become famous, we can see them, listen to them, admire. But they are gone too soon. Layne is one of these unique people. He was supposed to be known and loved and remembered by many.
He is a legend and he will ALWAYS be remembered💓
He is remembered by many.
Layne looks so different. Man. He seems so sweet and thoughtful, the eye contact and making sure he's listening to the questions to answer properly. My heart breaks for him. I am not an addict but I identify so much with the lyrics in Nutshell. The pain in AIC lyrics really speak to so many scenarios in this shitty life. Can I just add that Jerry has a really gorgeous speaking voice.
He’s gorgeous PERIOD!!! Layne I was in love with. My ex looks just like him!!!
@@OhHellMel he indeed is very good looking in this interview, I say that as a straight man
Being a survivor of addiction I wish I could've met Layne to try and rub off some of my inspiration/choices/ lifestyle on him, or at least had a chance to TRY. Especially since I live in his area! Moved to the Seattle area 1994, just months after we lost Kurt Cobain.
i agree completely…on every point you make. i still cry when i watch the unplugged show. and i think everything about jerry is good, honest and thoughtful. i saw them in 92 when Layne’s foot was broken and in a cast up to his knee, if memory serves. he is telling the absolute truth. that was my first big rock show. their sound and his running all over the stage, climbing up riggings and dragging that cast around…it was incredible. once you saw the power behind his voice and Jerry’s guitar…and Jerry’s voice; well, it was like nothing I’d experienced before. It was everything i was feeling at that age communicated in such a way that seeing it live was cathartic. I have been a fan since. I listen to Alice In Chains every day still and somehow it all still applies. It made me happy to see this video and the attention and consideration shown by such young men. I applaud them. I am grateful to them.
This is the way I want to remember Layne

From what I've heard, everyone who was close to him intervened and he chose this instead. As wonderful of a person he may seem, he selfishly went deeper into his addiction. See, this is the kind of thing only a real nonconformist can say. All they care about is doing what's fun to them and meeting their own ideas of success. They don't care how it effects the world, if it changes people's minds or if people idolize them. They like their music and they like playing it.
My sister was dating a dude in a 90s hair metal band that played all over hollywood, so she was always at all the main clubs in Hollywood all through the early and mid 90s.. @x3whatsup This young generation should get educated. I got educated by actually living through the same era's. Layne is 5yrs older than me... No joke, he was salt of the earth man belting out those guttural lyrics 💋
Most people don't consider 6'1" to be "small"...
Kurt cobain was the small one. Layne was a bit underweight for his height. Specifically when he was on the H and blow.
I went to Layne's birthday/memorial party at Jerry and Sean's bar. I got to speak with Nancy, Layne's mom for a while. Mike Starr's mom was there. I praised her for her power of forgiveness after accepting Phil Staley, Layne's father, back into her life after he left them when the kids were little and then found Layne again after he was famous, used heroin with him, and became a runner for the heroin dealer. It was an amazing two days.
That sounds absolutely incredible. I am planning to attend next August. It was my genuine hope to have been able to have gone this year; but, I wound up getting hired for a new job the same week 😢 Layne means the world to me.
@@AvecPoesie The crowd was just a big hug for him. It was such a happy vibe. The bands played an acoustic night, and then a 2-and-a-half-hour rock show the next night! There was a meeting at the fountain in the city center to commemorate Layne and Andy Wood, and Kurt and all the other musicians that graced the city and are now gone. Phil Staley was there too. We saw private pictures a friend took when they were just starting out. A portion of the money made went to the Layne Staley Memorial fund, which helps those in the music with addiction issues. I adored Layne and he still means the world to me too. Some fans there were a tad overwhelming, I must say. They haunted and hung out every place they heard he went. But they were so sweet. I haven't danced that much in a long time. Congratulations on your new job, but make sure to be there next year. Every year it seems that so many are just learning of his gift, and the words resonate with every generation.
@@missolesoulI can't understand Layne's Mom forgiving his Dad. His Dad only came back in the fold because Layne had money and therefore he could get H through him for free. That's disgusting and evil. How did that help Layne? Ppl need to get real with some of this crap. Just like Mark Lanegan being the lowlife scum bag who was on tour in Europe and got Layne right back in to H again. And Demri did the same sh*t to him. These ppl around him were not uplifting good ppl who were there to support Layne in sober living. They were all H addicted users who hung with Layne to be high all the time. I find it absolutely sickening. Everybody knows anytime an addict gets clean in rehab. They have to then go to a sober living house. And they have to stay away from all the old ppl they used to use with. For poor Layne, that was nearly everybody he knew! And he was in a band that had become massive and had deadlines on recording, touring clear out years from then. It was all way too much. Way too much for anybody to handle that, trying to get clean and stay that way. The very last person Layne needed to have around him during that time was Mark Lanegan of all ppl. I know Layne thought of Mark as a friend. But I'll tell you now, he was anything but. Mark was not a good person, at all. And I will gaurantee you he screwed Demri behind Layne's back too. On many occasions. Mark was the epitome of a useless junkie. All of these ppl just helped Layne's down fall. None of them were good for him. Layne would have had to quit the band, moved away, and stopped contact with all of those ppl to have ever gotten off H permanently. And he wasn't strong enough to do that. He didn't want to be clean bad enough. The whole thing is sad beyond belief. When I look at Layne, everywhere I look around him all I see are 1000 foot walls that were impossible to climb up. Every aspect of his life had him walled in. That is probably how he felt, too. Because that's all I see. And the number 1 person who just completely destroyed Layne on every level possible, was his Dad. What an absolute POS. And his Dad has never owned up to any of it. Not forgiveable at all. His Mother should never forgive him, ever!
@@alesiap.6062 I can't agree more. That's what I was saying to Nancy. How on earth she could even look at that man again after what he did. If you read Layne last interview in Rolling Stone, he laments that his dad was able to get clean again, yet he could not, even after 12 rehab stays and knew he was actively dying. I wanted nothing to do with him (Phil), but others treated him like a celebrity. Layne looked a lot like him. His mother told me that the man is almost ninety years old and had been using heavy drugs for over seventy years. She said just now she can see the man she loved after so many decades. She feels like she has nothing left to offer him but her forgiveness, if for no one else but herself. If he is still alive, he will no doubt be at the fountain again next year to commemorate all the Seattle talent lost. People give him gifts of drawings of Layne and candles, etc.
@@missolesoul Yeah, I can see that now that you say it. She probably did it to unburden herself of that resentment. I still have such a hard time with that. I don't know how Layne could forgive him. I mean he sh*t on Layne not only when he was a young boy. He sh*t on him again when he was a man. And God, just in the worst possible way. It really makes me so sad and angry for Layne at the same time. He deserved a Dad who loved him. And a Dad who supported him in every way for him to get clean. He got that POS. It makes me so sick. And I just know that's where all of Layne's issues came from. Because that's the only thing that causes that deep of an emotional wound. Then of course Demri. Ughh. Layne was not surrounded by the ppl he needed to be in order to get clean. And he should have been. It's heart breaking. And it's heart breaking Layne wanted to die. Which I believe he absolutely did.

Lol😂😂 4:20-4:25 when Layne corrects Jerry then says, "I know you as that" 😆. Layne is so poised and charming here. ❤
If you listen closely to Layne and his comments about exploitation, they're a definitive precursor to Nutshell. The greatest voice ever in rock music gone way too early!
Damn. Layne was the most tragic loss to me in music history. That needle took over. He looked healthy here.
@Kay Lee 6 years later but yeah...guess he finally gave up...sad
@Kay Lee 86 pounds to be exact. scary to think about
they fired mike starr and then jerry looks like him in this video that's weird
A tragic loss, is when a musician dies in a plane crash, like ritchie valens. There are many more who died in crashes. Totally out of their control. People who choose to use drugs and succumb to it, are in a different category. Its sad. But it was self inflicted and very preventable
@@tvb1020 You are correct.
Layne must have been a very nice guy to be with. Very missed.
His death broke Jerry's heart _profoundly._ Jerry's whole life was/is the band, whereas Layne was like a butterfly...always flitting to the next bright shiny thing. Without Layne, Jerry had to seriously regroup. I think that's why he kept the AIC name, to hang onto a part of Layne & for the name recognition.
These guys worked incredibly hard and show so much gratitude at the same time. They were the Real Thing.
Layne looked so good & healthy
Layne looked like he'd rather be anywhere but there. He was so shy and uncomfortable being in the spotlight. Except when he was onstage, where he shone like a beacon.
I never realized how cool Mike Inez is. Great interview.
These boys are just so darling at this point in their young lives
15:53... Layne saying "I don't have a girlfriend...", how many of us wishing we had a time machine💙
IKR
How precious they ALL are and very funny and kind to each other. True brothers. They will see Layne again 👼
Yeah but you realize none of them had even spoken to Layne since 1998. He died in 2002. They went 4 years without contact. So they were not friends or Brothers during that time. And Jerry was on rock line in 98. And Layne called in. It was so strange. Jerry never even said hello to Layne on that call nor did he say goodbye. They didn't talk to eachother. They talked to the rock line guy about eachother. It was the strangest thing ever. Then the idiot rockline host just dumped Layne's call super fast. That was the last contact Layne ever had with Jerry was that call. The only person in AIC Layne still talked to the 4 years from 98-2002 was Mike Starr. And those 2 remained friends the entire time til Layne died. I think there were so many selfish and self interested ppl surrounding Layne. I think Jerry and Sean made big mistakes not just parting ways with Layne after the dirt tour. Because imo, Layne needed to not be in a band anymore once he had such bad addiction issues. The best thing for Layne would have been stopping the band. And Layne getting completely away from Seattle, the music scene, Demri, and the ppl he thought were friends. Because that is the only way Layne could have ever stayed off of dr*gs. But imo, Jerry and Sean didn't care about Layne, as much as they cared about his singing for their band. They thought if Layne was no longer the singer. Then they couldn't have a band anymore. Well they should have just started a new band with a different name at that time. But money. So much money to be made. Eh, they were young guys, and they were living in a whirl wind. I can't even begin to grasp that lifestyle. But imo, if they would have truly loved Layne. They would have ended the band. Because Layne was not going to ever be able to win his battle against addiction, unless his entire life, location, and those he was surrounded by all changed drastically. That's just the truth. And I know Layne didn't want the band to end. Nor did he want to stop being in the band. But it's still what he needed to do. And that time frame would have been the only time frame where he could have changed his life course. Sadly it didn't happen. Rock and Roll and the Grunge music scene in Seattle was the worst thing that ever happened to Layne Staley in reality. He just was not emotionally strong enough to live that life.
@@alesiap.6062first of all you don't know that and no one knows really except the guys themselves. It is well known that Layne became really closed off and paranoid towards the end of his life, he avoided all contacts with his friends, not just the AIC guys. He wouldn't ever pick up the phone or answer the door. Also the other guys were dealing with their addictions too. And secondly - all the AIC guys did another interview on Rockline in 1999, so you are wrong anyway.
Your assumptions about Jerry's and Sean's motives are ignorant and cruel. They did stop making records and touring in 1996 because of Layne but he still didn't get better so your theory doesn't make any sense.
One of my favorite all-time bands, Layne resembles my son a lot in this interview, he was gifted, sincere, and disarmingly authentic just like the rest of the band. I’m still troubled by the way he slowly slipped away. Mike too. I’m so happy to see that Jerry sound sobriety and he’s living his best life.
Looking at Layne here, you would have absolutely NO idea he would sing that way he did.
Not only looking at Layne, but hearing the soft, gentle tone of voice with which he spoke makes his hardcore singing voice incredibly shocking! It was a very cool opposition. 🖤
Thanks for sharing! Love this!
Always wish I could reach through the screen , hold laynes face , and say please don’t
Layne staley is the underground king 👑
Love how these guys all love each other. Such respect. Great friends
haha Jerry wasn't too happy with the "did you used to play glam rock?" question :D
