    It's funny how, despite how filthy and beat up it was, there was actually very little wrong with it. Just a thorough cleaning and a few tweaks and it's as good as new. Amazing! (And yes, I feel very old knowing the Wii's age.)

      @@maximilianbrem8250 to be fair, modern home consoles are also durable - my Xbox Series S literally feels like a brick and I am not sure what I would have to do for it to break. But even if it's a bit dusty I don't get how people still can make them super grimy in just like 2 years. That's considering that I have spilled tea over my controller and after some cleaning it works like new.
      I would be more careful with things like Steamdeck and Switch but from my experience they are also not that easy to break unless you're really unlucky or trying to do so on purpose.

    The moment you touched the plate on the drive and that awful noise stopped was a priceless relief from that awful sound.
    I remember buying my Wii on launch day. It was the only system I ever bought at launch and it was a bit of a fluke. A few months before I was trading in some games and they had one pre-order left as somebody in front of me just cancelled. My Army buddy encouraged me to get the pre-order.
    I went with him to pick it up on launch day in November 2006. We were in those long, long line at the Fayetteville, NC mall and a dude with a clip board stepped out and called 5-6 names including mine. People were furious at us for some reason and one or two kids were weeping.

    2013. The year my Wii started falling apart.
    I still have it to this day. I haven't touched it. It's still barely functional. This year, I just might try my hand at refurbishing it. Maybe I can get it to play Project M again.
    Your Wii is in surprisingly good condition. Mine works, but it crashes often. Might be in worse condition than yours, given the dust collected over the decade. Ehh, but it'll still be fun to open it up. And as always, watching you open things is relaxing and interesting.

      It's a pretty neat life hack if the sensor bar ain't working. The Wiimote is kinda similar to a lightgun, in that the red panel at the top of the controller houses a dual IR sensor. The sensor bar is really just a portable infrared light "fixture." The Wii U's Gamepad also has infrared lights around the camera. Any pair of properly spaced sources of infrared light will work in a pinch, but candles/tea lights are a popular option.
      I apologize for the rambling, but it's an interesting subject.

      @tomatosoup1759 Рік тому +8

      I know I’m really late, but as someone that does this pretty often as a hobby, you really don’t need much when starting out. But if you really want to get into repairing electronics, it’s not quite as scary as it looks. You should invest in a good screwdriver kit with all the specialty bits that specific consoles use, as well as tweezers and spudgers. The ifixit toolkit is probably the best thing you could buy at first, it’s a little pricy but has everything you’ll need to take apart consoles and work on them (they also make really good guides on how to take apart and repair almost any console). If you want to properly fix electronics as well, you’ll want to buy a soldering iron and maybe a hot air station, the one he uses in the video is pretty good. As for skills, that’s mostly something you gain from experience, but there’s a few things you should know. I would make sure you have a good understanding of how electricity, current, and voltage work and get familiar with basic electronics components and how to fix them. Tbh though, just watch odd and his videos and they will teach you more than any guide or forum can. His n64 video inspired me to restore mine (which looked just as bad as his), and all I needed was a screwdriver, dish soap, alcohol, and a toothbrush to get it working like new. Hopefully this helped, sorry for the essay lol, and good luck with your restorations!
