Been waiting for this comparison 🙌 TFL ...
This is all good and all but look at that EVO still holding its own! Why can’t Mitsubishi do that anymore.
@@jesustsa1 Same problem as Toyota: The people that designed the good cars have all retired, and they've decided an SUV is their halo car.
You do realize the most successful motorsports supra of all time used a turbo 4 cylinder. The car driven by Keiichi Tsuchiya had a 3S-GTE in a Supra and put down a perfect season in japanese touring car races.
I do realize the mandatory 43mm intake restrictor didn't flow enough air to make the inline-6 worth the weight, when the minimum weight for the series was about 2/3 the weight of the Supras for sale to the public.
That successful 4-cylinder Supra also had the firewall cut up to move the engine back. The driver sat several inches back from the original seat position. The transmission tunnel was a big, square box. The suspension geometry has been completely replaced.
I think that race car retained less than half of the original Supra structure and none of the driveline, so it doesn't seem like a very good comparison.
tsa1 1 The cost of manufacturing the Evo wasn’t worth it anymore. I’m sure it was a team of number crunchers that “don’t enjoy going above the recommended speed” that killed off the Evo.
What you came for: 8:56
Tomelino I love you
Much appreciated

They should call the 4 cylinder version the Celica
Or corolla

Yea, smart car shoppers usually know to skip the first MY of a vehicle when buying an all new car.
First run might still have value if they folks plan to hold these for 30 years :)
yup 2021 version is just so much better
@@bombchu9308 Hella stupid
😂🤣 so true . Epic fail
That 4 banger would work better in the 86
cecil otto that would be crazy but a BMW engine will probably not find its way into BRZ and 86 because it would probably be a legal mess.
I think the STI Impreza engine is better for AE86, but what you're suggesting might be awesome!
Edit: I meant 86 not ae86
How about we get an actual Toyota engine in the GR86
@@calebf612 Why would you want an actual Toyota engine in a Subaru?
86 benefits from the low center of gravity the Subaru boxer provides.
Great.... my phone is lost in the exhaust now. *Posted from an LG Smart Toaster*

Picked up my supra 2 weeks ago 3.0 prem red and i can tell you the thrill is just incredible. You get the looks, the honks, and the occasional cop wanting to hear the exhaust (yes happened to me on I-75 into Cincinnati.)
Your main goal in this car is to get up to highway speed in a blink of an eye then scan for cops just so you can down shift it into 4th every 5 minutes then break…..Then repeat. Love the car and the memories i will make in it
HAHA i have owned mine for about 6 months and that sounds exactly like my dailey commute!
This generation Supra is starting to grow on me... I wasn’t a fan initially
Lol you know what funny I told a lot of people that it will soon grow on them slowly and if they do make a 3jz it’s over
Yep. Now let's so how many recalls this gets.
I tried to let it play out and i still don't like it. Ugly af, horrible body lines, and im indifferent about the BMW engine.
Waiting for the body kits to smooth it out.
I feel so cynical for even saying it. I know a lot of MKIV supra owners and maybe it's my nostalgia creating the prejudice.
@@TEDDERAMA it looks like a fish
I wasn't a fan until I saw one in person. They're really great looking cars in person. Pictures/youtube videos don't really do them justice.
I realize that all these tests are in variable conditions, but I think the time for the Supra 6 is very impressive. For a front engine rear drive, it does very well.
Extra 120 odd bhp... “I don’t feel the 200lb difference”
NO SHIT
I always wondered what the difference would be and you guys showed me and that’s what I love about your channel ! 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Wow, great thorough breakdown of the two different cars. Thanks for this!

It's a new celica
a moment of silence for the 2020 Supra owners...
You dont like the bmw supra???😂😂 bmw's make great cars!
It's so simple to put an OTS tune into the 2020 Supra that would take it above the new 2021 Supra. Any car guy would know that.

I have the 2021 Supra GR and they did a wonderful job with the exterior design
Glad you're happy with your rebadge BMW Z4!!
Great video! I'd love to see you guys drive an STI around your track for comparison. Yes, I drive one that's been modified.
I love the scientifically accurate timing measurement system.
I like how the 2.0 comes kinda stripped down so I can add your own mods
Call me old fashioned, but I think the 4cyl Supra should be called the Celica
True
Could use a small badge next to the GR or bottom right of Supra
The second gen supra was based on the celica platform, main difference being 4 cylinder vs 6. So ya, by a historical perspective the 4 cylinder would make sense being called a celica.
@@mazdaratti89 Well toyota could care less about historical/heritage significance as we all know.
@@liamnissanS2K Lol. Good point, well taken.
Liked this video for the Italian Job shirt. Go Mini's!
I’d be anxious what some tuning and few mods would do for that 4 banger haha
You can chiptune the "30i" B48 engine easy to ~310hp / 470Nm (~345ft lbs)
@@siraff4461 the tires that are the same width? yeah sure
It will still get its ass handed by a Mustang GT which cost around the same or maybe little less. And with a tune those BMW 4 cyls are known to fly apart below 100k miles. While that V8 in a Mustang will run for 200k miles without much issues.
Yea, toyota is desparately adding 4 cyl to Supra hoping that it will sell. But it won't because its terrible value for money. 6 cyl is also selling very poorly, because shitty value for money plus BMW shitty reliability. Those BMW engines are made of plastic.
LSV8 no it won’t, the 0-60 in the Supra in-line 6 is 3.9 seconds, vs 4.0-4.2 with the mustang, the Supra weighs 3400 pounds vs almost 3800pounds with the mustang, it would be a close race but the Supra would win by a little.
@@ZACH_95_ I am talking about the 4 cylinder Supra. Inline 6 Supra is $50k+ and is in same price as Mustang GT350 which again will kick the BMW Supra's ass again. Also at $60k you can get a C8 Corvette which will completely destroy this BMW Supra.
In today's world this Supra is a hard sell, performance is not impressive at all for the price they are asking.
Paul, please take an Acura NSX (2017 or later) around the track!
So the linear power band on my Jackson Racing Supercharger with JDL 4-2-1 El header with longer free flowing runners for improved mid-range torque, really work well together to give a large but linear power band on my 2 liter Scion FR-S. My engine was fully rebuilt by Toyota after that crazy valve spring recall. Thank you Toyota! The car is running fantastic! Love you guys to DEATH!
This test can also be called
BMW 330i Vs M340i
Or 230i vs M240i🤣
or z4 30i vs z4 40i
Or 316i vs318tds
Lol for real
That joke is getting old
Really enjoy Paul’s opinions and I think this was the matchup of the year so far. Great content! Keep up the good work
2 second difference isn't bad, I feel it held it's own and probably is the better buy.
Yea I don't think it deserved that bad a review. That track was built for Karts, not cars. I have no idea why you would take a car to a kart track and expect to learn anything about it.
2 second n cheaper, how it’s not hot is beyond me 😂
Roman is wasn't that bad cause you arrived at the finish line on the same day of the Drag Race.😂 Great video and thanks for sharing.
(wonder if adding strut braces to the 4-cylinder would be an easy "plug and play" upgrade and/or make a noticeable difference in handling.)
We need more Paul! Not just on the track.. he's like the American Tiff Needel!
I like the yellow on the car, It would be interesting to see the price difference on the 6 vs the 4, if the 4 is cheap enough I can see it being a good option otherwise I’m not sure. Anyways I’m probably too poor for either version so I’m going to be looking at a Miata lol
If the aftermarket gets big it could probably be a better track monster than the 6. Better handling with the two less cylinders.
You might improve the 4 cylinder a bit by using higher octane gas -- if Toyota's small GDI turbo is like the ones on my Fords. I've actually datalogged a phenomena where the engine pulls timing over about 4500 rpm on regular gas to prevent detonation. It makes a difference in feeling that pull up to the redline. This applies even to regular vehicles like the Ford Escape with the 2.0L turbo. But again, not sure how Toyota does engine management.
Great video and great cars, thanks.
The exhaust comparison using the phone was hilarious 😂
Can you imagine buying a Supra and then the next year Toyota increases the horsepower by 50. HAHAHAHAH
Tune it.
i mean the stock dyno test for 2020 had 400
Drag racing is such an American thing and one point but racing around the track is the real test in my eyes .... Other countries have corners 😂
Great video.
It's the obsession with horse power and majority of Americans have poor driving skills. I for one am all about the corners. I live around mountains, trust me, we have some really windy roads here in America too. Particularly on the East side where you have the Blue Ridge, Appalachian, and Smokey Mountains.
The stock brakes on the 4 cylinder model compromise it to keep costs down but also make it look disappointing from the wheel aspect
Great video
Does 2 seconds really make that much of a difference off the track? If I'm just using it for normal driving I may get the 4 cylinder. Either way it's a heck of a car.
The 4 cylinder should have been offered in the manual , Toyota seems to be doing everything opposite of the enthusiast demands.
Especially since bmw already makes a manual for this chassis
Yeah first thing they did wrong is making it a rebadged BMW in the first place!!
I like the 'Italian Job'-T-Shirt :-)
Curious to see if upcoming 2nd Turbo GR86 will impact sales with the 4-Cylinder Supra
The 4 cylinders is the expensive model for the FRS , Supra is best with 6 cylinders !
Right, I'd like to see a comparison between the FR-S/BRZ and the 4 cylinder Supra!
4 cylinders have their place - the GTI comes to mind readily. But for this, definitely the 6!
@japanwatchconnection Still does, ask Porsche - moving back to 6's for their Cayman and Boxter too, following a short move to 4's. Another great 4 is the flat 4 by Subaru....but for best performance the Supra is better with the 6.
Description box contains mistakes - it should also say Inline 6 not V-6. But thanks for the comparison!
Thanks for the heads-up. We fixed it.
Love the track race though xo

Not having a LSD is a big bummer
(On the 4 banger)
Just watched an Everyday Driver video that said they’re coming with a mechanical LSD, just not the adaptive one in the 3.0L.
K C I use to autocross a louts elise without one.
It was that cars second biggest letdown
Me the first
Yeah I strongly detest the vlsd in my 370z. Even though it's technically a "lsd" is truly sucks at it's job. So in my next vehicle, this will be a VITAL selling point, because it's stupid if the car cannot put the power down or runs into traction issues because of a lack of a truly effective lsd setup.
Mechanical lsd on the 4 banger. Electronic lsd in the in-line 6
Jay Stepp lol I hear that. Probably the same let downs I have with my GTI. Loves to one wheel peel all the way through second. Even my wife said “what good is this horsepower if you can’t use it?” That cut deep.
One thing a lot of reviewers didn’t mention is that the four-cylinder transmission is mapped differently for whatever reason. According to one reviewer. He didn’t say anything about the six cylinder transmission if he was having the same problem down shifting. Anyone have any feedback on that?
I'm hoping the future FRS have this 4cyc-turbo!
If these Supras had legit OEM Toyota engines sales would be much better.
eh, I'm fine with BMW's 6. Watch what happens when the new Z comes out, it will have similar power outputs but the Supra will have way better MPG's.
I agree a Toyota twin turbo engine would have been much better and would have reminded everyone of the two Jay Z days 🤙🏾
@@jeffk464 Anyone fine with BMW engines and the current Supra has already probably bought one

The entire car should be a Toyota instead of just the emblems. And why should it be so expensive. Toyota is huge worldwide it's just they're greedier than ever before.

It would be great to do a follow up video with the addition of 2020 Supra which would be a better candidate against the 21 Supra, and an 86 against the 4 cyl. Supra.
Roman you should do the phone exhaust test on every car review!! 😂
I would take either of these Supra models. For a daily street car that I need to get to "freeway" speeds the inline 4 will be great. For real fun on back roads and a track of course the inline 6 will be the one to get. (:
I have a BMW 228i, id love to see it up against the 4 CL Supra!
I have to say the look of the Supra is growing on me. There is something about the look of the white 6 cylinder one that is just right.
So you're telling me supra decided to use a bs unreliable bmw motor to "keep the heritage" of the car and come back and drop a 4cylinder supra?
The 4 cylinder not getting a active LSD is ridiculous. Then there is the fact that Toyota still hasn't fixed the wind.buffering issue on either car and still don't offer a manual transmission option. Pass on both forms of Supra
It still has a LSD, it's just not torque vectoring like the 6 cylinder
@@exquisiteart6478 that's what I meant
@@swanblake oh whoops, my bad. Didn't see that you put "Active" LSD
The wind buffering is a weird one. I mean there's an easy aftermarket fix for it... 🤔 So I don't get why they wouldn't add it to the 2021 models as a factory fix.
European version for 4 cylinder engine have 195 HP or 260 HP, and for 6 cylinder have 340 HP and 380 HP.
I guess the biggest question is what's the price difference. If it's only 3 to 4k than it makes no sense, but if it's 7 to 8k then intake exhaust and tune would fix that dead upper range and probably grab 60+ hp and tq for 3 to 4 k. I saw that they included. Maintenance for the first 24 months/25000 miles. That's awesome for customers because if you are going to have BMW gremlins, they will poke their head up early. I thought it would have been cool if they went with a turbo fa20 from subi. You'd have built in upgrades, a totally different engine not, and a car that don't want to settle for gt86 or brz power restrictions.
Nice Z5 but it's not a Supra! What was Toyota thinking?!!!
They were probably thinking everyone in the company who helped with the last Supra has retired, and they didn't want to spend a lot of money re-learning how to build Supras.
@biff s I was trying to say it politely but, yeah, that's what I'm saying. Toyotas other sporty car comes out of a Subaru factory. The "fast" Toyota that comes out of a Toyota factory is an automatic Camry. They seem to think a big (fake) grill makes it less of a soulless appliance.
There'd easily be an extra 50bhp or more with the 4cyl with simple chip tuning.
Complaining about the weight of the driver was serious argument in my days of drag racing dirt bikes. Though I was of average weight and always ran a big bore 2 stroke so I didn't have to use them myself.
The A70 and A80 Supra's had turbo and non turbo models. Even the A60 had an "L Type" model without fender flares ans with skinnier tires. So the 4 cyl is like normally aspirated model of the past.
Looks like the 2 is still faster than lots of other cars on the list
Older cars.or much bigger cars as in SUV or sedans.
@@mbsnyderc Well they would be older since it just came out..
I need more Hot or Not! Hopefully Toyota puts a manual on it, which would make the narrow powerband more usable. A potential manual transmission would also make that 4 banger even lighter...
That 194hp engine for Europe and Japan is basically the same as the 250ish for North America, easily reprogrammable to around 300.
I don't care what anyone says, the 4-cyl Supra is still an awesome car. I've owned enough turbo fours to know that this setup can still yield big power and torque, as long as you're not used to driving ZL1 Camaro's and Shelby GT500's. Combine this with a lighter curb weight and all you're really losing is smoothness, sound and absolute power at the top of the rev range. A tune could easily yield 320-ish hp and a turbo upgrade/tune can yield 400-500 hp with no penalty in curb weight.
"I'm buying a Toyota Supra to get that sweet 4 cylinder!" - Nobody, ever.
It's like Toyota doesn't understand that half of the enthusiasm for the Supra is for the straight 6.
i think point was its for tuners to get cheaper supra . atleast they said so long time ago.
Toyota sells those for people who instantly rip out the engine and rentals.
The only thing with the 4cyl is itll likely still be a 40k car even with no options. I dont know many people who steal going to spend 40k on a 4cyl, 2 seater Toyota. They're already having a hard time selling the 6cyl 2020s.
