Neil Peart… my favourite drummer of ALL TIME….a very clever man and superb author. Music lost a genius the day he left this earth.. God bless sir and thank you for giving me so many hours of enjoyment along with your RUSH band mates..👍
If he was a doctor, he would have a Nobel prize. If he were a mathematician he would have the Field medal. If he were an actor, an Oscar. He's clearly very intelligent and insightful and I would be surprised if he wasn't that way about everything. I would listen to him talk about anything because i'm sure he knows more than me about everything.
Cool guy who doesn't look over his shoulder. I always loved Moon but Neil is a drumming machine live with what appears to be no end of energy. I've seen Rush a number of times and am always amazed at the level of musicianship these guys exhibit throughout their shows. I wish they'd go back and write a sequel to Cygnus X-1/Hemispheres as I always enjoyed the side-long songs from Yes, ELP, and, of course, Rush.
I will never forget the night I was up in the front row in Rochester NY having my internal organs rearranged thanks to Professor's drum solo. He was among the very best.
I have always liked the smaller high pitched drums he has. I like when he starts a roll way up high on the little toms. Most people's highest pitch drum is their snare, than it goes down in tone from there. That said, I think I like to listen to him talk even more than play. My guess is that he can speak intelligently about many things.
Neil Peart's secret to being (most likely) the best at what he does is that, beyond his evident technical skill, he constantly looks to learn more from the best drummers and percussionists he can find. And he';s very generous in his recognition of the people he was and is influenced by.
Neil changed the percussion world with his ability to play from his soul instead of his brain. Any one person that talks badly about Neil knows nothing about the instrument we call Drums. I spent 15 years of my life playing in bands learning from the pros. Some talk about it...some play from the heart for REAL. Neil Peart is for REAL.
Odthean My honest opinion...No. Drummers like Bernard "Pretty" Purdie and Buddy Rich are the masters of the skins for eternity.. Let me clarify, Neil is a post modern drummer. To me this means drummers that rely on technology to make a statement rather than old school raw ability.
Dan Boughton Please don't forget that Neil studied Buddy for years...then added Modern Drummer technology to convey his genre of music. I can better relate to Neil due in part to the era that my drumming evolved from.
Wow!. I could listen to Neil Peart for hours!. Been playing drums for over 40 years now, and am gonna try the double bass pedals. Just bought a set of double pedals a few days ago, haven't had the opportunity to try them out. Work gets in the way at times!!. R I P Neil Peart, and thank you for the inspiration!!.
With a heavy heart I would like to say to the family & friends of Neil Peart, you have my sincerest and utmost condolences! What a profound loss this is. The world is a little bit darker now without you in it Neil, you will be missed and never forgotten. 😢
Awesome. Greatest part of this to me, is listening to you talk about the technique, style, feel, and a lil history. Fantastic. Love this stuff, very helpful in my playing too! Thank you big guy 👍🏽
This guy is so down-to-earth, yet far more erudite than the usual interviews you get when a musician is being showcased. I mean, you watch some musicians and it seems like their interview is ...'I like to accent the snare a bit when I go into my solo, then maybe throw in a few para-diddles'...Peart on the other hand is, without pretense, 'the oscillating definiculator reverberates within the hydramasetronic parameters', etc etc. It is part of his ESSENCE; he IS the drumkit: it is the transducer for his emotions and creativity. I saw them (Rush) thirty years ago the first time, and the guy was all energy and flow. He is simply amazing, a true savant. Unlike some drummers who have a more assertive persona, aka the Lars Ulrichs of the world (who is a very good drummer, but not in Peart's stratosphere), Peart would rather be bicycling thru Nepal than beating up Napster subscribers.
The best drummer/percussionist as far as I'm concerned. Again, I'm partial to Rush. Always my favorite band of all time. RIP Neil your influence, music and talent lives on!
Just read some of the comments on here and cant believe how arrogant and uninformed some people sound. They're either young or inexperienced. A little high on themselves? Maybe. Point being,as a long time experienced drummer,Peart has always been one of my favs amongst rock drummers. Theres always someone who can play something better than you. Its a big world out there kids. Be humble and respect the pro's who paved the way. As far as Sheyded goes, sounds like a bit of a grudge there for some reason.Only you know. Peart IS a "top dog" and maybe you and a handful of resent-bent individuals will say otherwise. I am a fan of all music types and every style is different. I think preference might have been the argument here. Good luck in your endeavours folks. B.B. Drum teacher,Canadian Conservatory of Music.
+Brian Beeper Hey Brain. I am a drum teacher and pro drummer as well and luckily I don't have any arrogant students like some of the people here you mention. It's funny how some of the greatest drummers in the world can respect Peart, Bonham, Charlie Watts , Ringo etc...yet basement players commenting on youtube seem to know it all. I maybe had one kid who was pretty gifted and full of himself come to a lesson once and his mother told me over the phone before hand when she was scheduling his first lesson that none of the other drum teachers thus far could challenge him. She asked me if I thought maybe he was too good for lessons. I said well bring him over for a free trail lesson and we'll see. I asked him if he played along to a lot of music and he sort of just went "pfffft! yeah all the time" I said "I have a cd that I'd like you to play along to; originally it was a record album from 1971. They are called The Mahavishnu Orchestra; Ever hear of them?" He rolled his eyes and looked miserable. I put on the Inner Mounting Flame. His attitude changed right then and there.
+Steve Percoco I love this story! Break out some "Billy Cobham" on him. One of the greatest fusion drummers in my opinion. He is enough to humble any Drummer with swelled ego.
john west Believe it or not John this kid was not initially impressed with Cobham's drumming. I guess his fills weren't flashy enough or his double bass drums weren't fast enough. But the odd time signatures he liked and the song Dance of Maya in particular where you can hear a completely different feel and count depending on your perspective (sort of three dimensional or poly rhythmic I guess) got this kids attention.
***** Not sure what you are saying but to answer your question yeah the kid was good and could probably play any music he wanted to but the bottom line is you have to be into the music. You can't force someone to like music or a particular drummer if they are not into it. I just wanted him to see that just because he is good doesn't mean he can't learn more and that their aren't better drummers out there. The other thing about kids that are really good like that is they have no respect for different levels of groove. Just being able to lay down a simple groove is boring to them but someone like Steve Gadd can play at a very high level yet he instinctively knows to play simple and lay back if the music calls for it.
I understand what your saying. The kid could be a prodigy as far as I know. Never heard him play so I cannot judge. But I do know that with all the different styles, preferences, techniques that I enjoy, i cannot in all of my years drumming can ever call lessons boring. Every lesson is a lesson in at the very least timing. But thats my nature.
Yuck. He's a few light years ahead in his craft than Bob Ross was in his. Comparisons to the likes of other more inspiring artists might be a bit more appropriate, don't you think? He is not only an incredibly versatile, schooled and accomplished drummer, he communicates his ideas perfectly.
Anthony Marrone It is. I heard that Neil Peart has physical health issues. I'm not sure if Rush can carry on in a touring capacity. This is just what I heard from somewhere.
He's simply the best in the world. Ever? Quite possibly I think so. When the day comes that Neil can't play anymore or passes on, the world will be a sadder place. Except for the tens of thousands of drummers he inspired. Thanks Neil. My three year old boy is fascinated by you.
I was the first musician in my home town to get my hands on "Moving Pictures" in the early eighties, and all my "cool" muso friends all freaked out when they heard it. The album became so scratched from everybody playing it at parties etc. Loved that album, it sounded so good played loud on vinyl. Cheers!
1:18 - "…which, unfortunately, being human - that does vary from night to night with all of us." You see, not only is he a genius, but also comedian. He's implying that he's human? That is the joke of the century.
This man is the true epitome of hard work. He has said many times that he is not a naturally gifted drummer. He puts his playing down to nothing more than repetitive, boring, long hours of regular, consistent practice over many years. I think he is a brilliantly well rounded musician. He is an incredibly articulate, worldly intelligent person who is very humble. I personally don't find his playing overly engaging for me. But the man has an immense library of technique, skill and taste.
The thing that always gets me about Neil is that if u listen to just how good he was and yet had this quiet humble confidence about him that could make any self professed rockstar look foolish by comparison. He was so good that Tom Sawyer and Limelight could have remained his apex, but no. He actually was so humble and respectful of his love of music and playing that he went and got lessons! If thats not a winning attitude that sets one well apart from others, I dont know what is. Though he is gone his legacy will always be in a class by itself. Peace and respect Sir.
"...there is no tempo at all...completely random..." Any drummer that can do that, and then move back and forth between that and patterns locked to a tempo at will is so far beyond excellent at what they do it is nearly superhuman. Seriously. It's just incomprehensible how good Peart is at the drums.
Eric Pederson Actually that's a mark of a terribly sloppy drummer. Which Peart is. Any drummer with 5+ years under his/her belt can alternate between free-form and rigid tempo. Genius comes with making it seem like you're free-form while keeping the overall feel. Peart doesn't do that. Check out Gavin Harrison for some actual genius. Peart revolutionized drumming in his day, but in the modern age he's average at best compared to the top dogs, and that's not even counting jazz drummers.
Shayded Peart is a sloppy drummer? Lol. That's good. By the way, I'm a professional engineer and musician. I challenge you to post a video of you doing it in perfect time TO A CLICK and throwing in free-form licks for good measure. I'll bow to you in a second if you can do it. Problem is, 99% of drummers just suck. The hardest thing for any drummer to do is to keep rock solid time TO A CLICK for 3-4 minutes. And I would know...I have to record many of them.
Eric Pederson lol. Very nice fallacious argument. Nothing I've said has been wrong and I'm not required to give my fucking resume to some hack on youtube. Like I mentioned before, go listen to Gavin Fucking Harrison and tell me that Peart is even in the same LEAGUE as him. Then remember Harrison is in a lower LEAGUE than the likes of most Jazz greats. Your musical knowledge must start and end with mediocre rock, because you're obviously too musically deprived to understand talent.
Shayded First of all, you're awfully defensive for a guy who basically just insinuated he's a better drummer than Neil Peart. Maybe you'd be able to tell us how many Grammys you've won? No? And before you say that the Grammys aren't a metric of talent, I'd like to remind you that they are voted on by our PEERS...as in other musicians. So, clearly, other musicians view him as one of the greats. LMAO!! Also, how many records have you sold? Does anyone even know your name? That's what I thought. Furthermore, you're comparing apples with bullets. Neil Peart isn't a jazz drummer. Are you deaf? Progressive rock and jazz are not the same genre of music, did you know that?
For those who criticize Peart here, I urge you to sit behind a kit and try to play ANY of the songs he created with Rush. Any. Only then you'll realize how incredibly difficult it is not just to execute but to have the feel and timing he has. The guy is a master.
Small wonder that the drumming world referred to him as THE Professor. No drummer in history was as precise and knowledgeable as Neil Peart. His drum fills and solos were legendary. He attacked the drums like they were the enemy. His crew simply said, "He hit hard," A gentleman, a scholar and a wonderful human being who overcame the loss of a wife and a daughter, he was loved by his fans and his peers. We will never see his like again. When he passed, the music stopped. Rest in Peace Neil Peart. You will be remembered.
I am reminded of the biblical proverb "A fool makes his folly known to all while a wise man conceals knowledge," that said it takes a lot of chutzpah to make curt or rude remarks about a drumming icon of Neil's caliber. If a man ( or woman ) is up to his level they should edify and show their own chops elsewhere. Being a boor or a banal person ill serves anyone!
Neil is such a brilliant guy, incredibly well-spoken, and an awesome and talented drummer and lyricist. I'm a guitar player for the most part, but I love the drums as well and Neil is a big hero of mine. Finally some said it right, he really isn’t a god of drumming lol. He’s amazing, better than me, better than a believe most people watching. And better than the people criticizing him, but they have a point.
But I'm a guitarist, so I _obviously_ have the god given ability to know exactly what's wrong with the playing of all other musicians. No matter if it's drums, oboe, harpsichord, or clarinet (just to give a very few examples).
It cannot be denied that the guitarist is all knowing and all powerful. ^-^
Lols.

Yes what you said is all true but, you still have the problem of becoming homeless if your girlfriend leaves.
El Guapo dry insightful, it takes an intelligent man to realize he is in the presence of a master.
The guy was superman. He could do no wrong and was great at everything he ever tried in his life.
That soothing low voice.
I got his drumming DVD, fantastic all the way through. His 30 minute Improv was great as well.
Paul Simmons yep, sequel to Cygnus!
Moon was overrated. Let’s be honest. A star on the kit, but he can’t compare with Peart’s kind of talent
Pat benatar
I will never forget the night I was up in the front row in Rochester NY having my internal organs rearranged thanks to Professor's drum solo. He was among the very best.
I have always liked the smaller high pitched drums he has. I like when he starts a roll way up high on the little toms. Most people's highest pitch drum is their snare, than it goes down in tone from there. That said, I think I like to listen to him talk even more than play. My guess is that he can speak intelligently about many things.
That is why I have always loved Rototoms.
Neil Peart is for REAL.
you are a total fuck tard
Thank you and I hope to have a drum-off with you in the future. Words are just words unless backed up by action....that's the way real Men do it :)
Odthean Your opinion is important. Please view "Neil Peart Buddy Rich Tribute". Thank you again for your response.
I can't believe my favorite drummer mentioned my second favorite Tommy Aldridges name.
My Uncle Don George taught Neil the drums when neil was younger. RIP the both of you.
RIP Mr. Peart
With a heavy heart I would like to say to the family & friends of Neil Peart, you have my sincerest and utmost condolences! What a profound loss this is. The world is a little bit darker now without you in it Neil, you will be missed and never forgotten. 😢
Thanks for these drum tips, Mr. Hanks. 🥁
Awesome. Greatest part of this to me, is listening to you talk about the technique, style, feel, and a lil history. Fantastic. Love this stuff, very helpful in my playing too! Thank you big guy 👍🏽
Rest in Peace, Neil
That profile pic lollll
Another God of Rock. How intelligent this guy is. Thanks for sharing this interview.
4:40 Danny Carey and Mike Portnoy have so much to thank Neil for that.
its a hard fill not to play behind the kit always sounds great lol
@@allgamingnetwork9448 exactly. I kind of naturally gravitated towards that double bass style when I was like 12 or 13. So fun.
Neil is a drum-master. The "Professor" is, thankfully, modest and introspective, which makes him a great role model for younger drummers.
I love how Neil takes 4 1/2 minutes to explain what takes him just about a minute to play . Frackin Rock N Roll .........
how can 222 people dislike the greatest drummer ever, my god, I would kill for that drum set.
A legend, talking like a mere human
0:00, the sound that fades in. Is it the intro to Dream Theater - As I Am?
Yes!! hahahahahahahah!!
Never thought that someone else would notice it
The best drummer/percussionist as far as I'm concerned. Again, I'm partial to Rush. Always my favorite band of all time. RIP Neil your influence, music and talent lives on!
Now I know why they called him the professor; four minutes of lecture and one minute of practical application! RIP big guy...✌🏼
This man is a true legend! Greatest I’ve ever seen! The man who made me a PRO drummer!
He is enough to humble any Drummer with swelled ego.
john west
Believe it or not John this kid was not initially impressed with Cobham's drumming.
*****
Not sure what you are saying but to answer your question yeah the kid was good and could probably play any music he wanted to but the bottom line is you have to be into the music.
The fact he mentions Bonham speaks volumes. RIP to two of the most influential drummers of all time.
The media couldn't even handle Neil and had to go offline
Rushnerd best comment I’ve ever seen on UA-cam
Admired for his talent, respected for his intellect, loved for his humanity.
RIP Professor.
Neil is the Bob Ross of drumming
Happy drums.. let's put a giant tree right thru the tom tom...
Yuck. He's a few light years ahead in his craft than Bob Ross was in his. Comparisons to the likes of other more inspiring artists might be a bit more appropriate, don't you think? He is not only an incredibly versatile, schooled and accomplished drummer, he communicates his ideas perfectly.
"There are no mistakes, just new parts"
Famous painter on public TV people like to riff on.
"Let's just put a little cowbell here..."
He has such smooth and amazing foot work. He makes it look absolutely effortless.
hands down greatest drummer on the planet
Anthony Marrone Seeing him live is something else. A really awesome Canadian drummer/lyricist.
I've seen a lot of concerts but never saw them.I bet its truly amazing to see such talent live
Anthony Marrone It is. I heard that Neil Peart has physical health issues. I'm not sure if Rush can carry on in a touring capacity. This is just what I heard from somewhere.
I hope he's ok.it will truly be a sad sad day when the music world loses such an amazing drummer
Anthony Marrone I heard it's something like joint issues. As we age, our bodies don't perform like they used to.
He's simply the best in the world. Ever? Quite possibly I think so. When the day comes that Neil can't play anymore or passes on, the world will be a sadder place. Except for the tens of thousands of drummers he inspired. Thanks Neil. My three year old boy is fascinated by you.
Amen !!
Now I know why they call Neal "The Professor".
Thus endeth the lesson!
I was the first musician in my home town to get my hands on "Moving Pictures" in the early eighties, and all my "cool" muso friends all freaked out when they heard it. The album became so scratched from everybody playing it at parties etc. Loved that album, it sounded so good played loud on vinyl. Cheers!
1:18 - "…which, unfortunately, being human - that does vary from night to night with all of us."
You see, not only is he a genius, but also comedian.
He's implying that he's human? That is the joke of the century.
drummakid101 Neil Peart? Human? Pshht.
Actually, Neil is proof that a machine could never be as good as a human.
1:18... poor attempt to try and pretend he's human
etiquettefiend
I'm dead.
😂😂😂😂
It's the third arm that gives him away.
...
Yeah, he's human! But exceptional!
Peace and respect Sir.
best reason to introduce a goofy little cow bell thing, is it was inspired by something you heard on Marx Bros.
One of My Country’s finest Musicians. God Bless You Neil, Thank You for the Music ❤️
"...there is no tempo at all...completely random..."
Any drummer that can do that, and then move back and forth between that and patterns locked to a tempo at will is so far beyond excellent at what they do it is nearly superhuman.
Shayded Oh, then you won't mind giving us links to your work so we can hear how great you are? Right??????????? You're adorable.
Was that intro As I am by dream Theater?
That was my Train of Thought
Yes, that was As I Am.
no, it's theater
A Ntp it's a Proper noun because it's a name. It's Theater
I wish his name was Neil Part then if he had a boy his name could be Neil Part II
I'LL KILL A PUNNER!!!
Sexist
I love how he goes on and on and on....OMG where have I heard that???!!!😂😁😃😄
I have been following him since 78.✌👊😎
I am reminded of the biblical proverb "A fool makes his folly known to all while a wise man conceals
knowledge," that said it takes a lot of chutzpah to make curt or rude remarks about a drumming icon
of Neil's caliber. If a man ( or woman ) is up to his level they should edify and show their own chops
elsewhere. Being a boor or a banal person ill serves anyone!
Truly1Tom stfu bible man
Well you certainly proved the truth of the quoted proverb.
@@rubytuesday1345 Haha! That was a good one.

Touche` old man. Bravo.
Neil is such a brilliant guy, incredibly well-spoken, and an awesome and talented drummer and lyricist. I'm a guitar player for the most part, but I love the drums as well and Neil is a big hero of mine. Rush was the first rock band I saw in concert in 1981, and they are at the top of the list of my very favorite bands. :) Rush's amazing music has been a big part of the soundtrack of my life for decades. I totally respect that Rush has retired after their many years of recording and touring, but I sure hope that they do a reunion tour at some time in the future. :)
