In case any young folks don't notice or understand: Mix Master Mike is creating the beat by scratching on one vinyl record. No second record playing a loop, no drum machine, no computer. He's rapidly back-spinning on kick and snare parts, then jumping to separate synth and horn parts. On one record. Because he's a Master.
Dam that is awesome!
back when dj's actually had to be talented to be taken seriously 🤙
Didn’t this way like ruin the records? But I wish dj’s today actually had to be good to be taken seriously. Not just sit there acting like they’re changing things but they’re actually playing a prerecorded song
OMFG I CANNOT BELIEVE I NEVER NOTICED THAT
@@darkassassin6457 It eventually destroys them. But it’s not exactly hi-fidelity sound you’re looking for. You could keep using a record for scratching for ages. Most DJs would try and pick up a few copies of whatever their main beats were.
Can we just appreciate the fact that Mike did that entire track with ONE fucking record. No loops, no doubling, just straight ballin'
Mixmaster Mike is unreal!!
Well, it is one record, but it is custom pressed, so there's tons of different samples on it.
Talent. What "artists" lack today.
Tight as fuck. 😗
Will always appreciate skills like that, is pure sounds of science 🤘😎🤘
What I love most about Beastie Boys is how they're so incredibly talented but also don't take themselves seriously and have fun.
As the whole set-up in this video proves.
Я из россии . Мы тоже любим эту группу!!!
Can we all take a moment to appreciate that this isn't new or old .. its simply TIMELESS
it´s definitely GENERATION X
i honestly coulnt tell if this was from the 80's or 2000's
HELL YEAH !!
The talent in that room is off the scale.
Well shit someone just scratched that record comment.
I’ve said for a long time.
“Don’t trust anyone who doesn’t like the Beastie Boys.”
I can second that!
🤞🏼👄😍🤪
👍👍
Even worse, someone who don't know who are the B Boys.
I concur.
Facts
Mike D’s insane athletic prowess at 3:28 gives me chills every time
:)))
😂😂 looking for this comment honestly…in his mind he reeeallly wants to do a sick handstand llol
No autotune...no computer generated mixing...Just pure skill
That is why you pay money, travel long distances to see these people. They are THE BEST.
I agree I personally only watch cave paintings bc these studios like Pixar and Ghibli use too many computers
Using computers to make art takes no skill I agree
@@carsonscott3237 😂😂😂😂
This is one of the best songs ever made of all time, if you know, you know.
Damn...Mix Master Mike is a fucking beast. Only used one turntable and a single record in one fucking take.
Word
and let's not forget the face that there is NO laptop in front of him and he's not using a special time coded record
+CitySkin09 Cause nobody, can do it, like Mix Master can,
Come on

REST HIS SOUL 'M.C.A' ❤😊🎉
I am so happy, Mix Master was (deservedly) inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.(He went in in 2012 with the Beastis Boys,)
Rest in peace MCA like the other guy said I'm 54 I remember when hip-hop was Universal and these three Knuckleheads lead the way.
20yrs old and still better then the majority of the music today R.I.P MCA
Good boy:) so glad to see the newer generation appreciate older music. Todays music has no soul whatsoever.
@@whitetornado603 He's saying the song is 20 years old, not himself. Plus it's your loss not listening to todays music. There's people that like both.
@@boulevardsound5137 I like and can appreciate both, it's just the majority of stuff now is not up to par. People need to realise, without the Beastie Boys, there would have been no LL Cool J or Def Jam as we know it.
@@simiangimp2282 it looks like it's the majority when really more people are making more music because it costs much less to make music and the playing field has evened out. We don't have less quality music, there's just more music to look through, he'll there's probably more quality music then there has ever been. It's just harder to find.
Preach partner.
The 3 MCs of Beasties get all the credit they deserve, but you rarely hear people give Mix Master Mike his dues. He's a huge part of why the band ended up so iconic.
I saw Mix Master Mike live a few years ago, just by himself, and it was incredible.
Mike is a star in his own right but he joined Beastie Boys for the Hello Nasty record, before that it was DJ Hurricane who was with them when they became global stars.
Damn,,, no catch,, no escape,, no headphones,, one piece of vinyl. Old school analogue genius.
can we just appreciate the comedy of the 2 minute long silent intro LOL
Good Apollo yes! Respect! ❤️my beastie boys
Brothaman Dap They're not mutually exclusive brother🤙

So entertaining with absolutely no special effects or even a budget. Just talent and charisma.
The D.J. was the special fx
Maybe accept the 🅱illion dollar demon soul sucking nuclear reactor backpack on the dj 😬
And they easily could have had a huge budget aswell
most DJs spin records. this DJ spun a record
That part at the beginning and end when they freeze and unfreeze, that was it. 🤣🤣
To everyone under 30,this is what real rap sounds like,RIP MCA
Ahh happy rap, how I miss you
@kyfaydfsoab Nah. It's pure Gen X. no hint of psychedelic boomer stuff.
@@YourEternalSoul666 I've found on the internet that anyone over 21 is considered a boomer.
@kyfaydfsoab We are not generation, we are just from 80's.
U don’t gotta be like that dawg. I’m 19 years old (born in 03) and this shit is all that I or any of my friends listen too. I love a lot of bands and artists: 2pac, Dre,snoop, as well as Pink Floyd, led zepp, Grateful Dead, and phish, however nothing compares to the beasties for me. Still a lot of people in the new generations who know good music from bad. Nothin but love for you and every other beasties fan. Just letting ya know. 🤘🏻
I was lucky enough to see Beastie Boys live once in my life. The first 15/20 minutes by Mix Master Mike alone on stage were worth the ticket. Unique band. R. I.P. Adam Yauch.
Really? Only once? I’ve seen them 10 or more. I’m in the documentary “Awsome I Shot that”. I’m the guy who yells I want two beers
I saw them here in Stockholm -99 and it was so great, me and my friends also shared a little bit of something green right at the beginning of the show 🙄
A regret in my life, not seeing the Beasties live. 😥

Best concert I went to and made tons of friends.
Four years later was in D.C, with a better fake, and saw lightning strike down too damn close for comfort.
Now my son is learning the greatest that is the Beastie Boys
Adam, you will always be missed
Can we just take a moment and appreciate Mike D's incredible athleticism at 3:24!! Amazing!
No one ever accused Mike D of not being a perfect human specimen.
He would never make a varsity athlete though...
Particularly impressive given that he's back from the dead.
You may not like it, but this is what peak performance looks like.
Hip Hop yoga....freeze. It was Dope
you know what made BeastieBoys so appealing? you know, beside the fact that they are all talented and had sick beats? they were odd-balls, and I've always been an odd-ball, so they were relatable
Yup and that was me. Love those dudes so much
The beats are sick like malaria!
they dressed up like this to get you suckers. it's public image thing. it worked
Absolutely ! True pioneers of hip hop. There will never be another band like them ever. They compliment each other so well ! Some of best concerts were Beastie Boys and A Tribe Called Quest another amazing hip hop group !
They’re also cute. That helps.
ad-rock’s voice is everything

The beat is him scratching! This is the dopest shit ever made!
Hip hop without the champagne, gold rope chains and ego... Thank you Beastie Boys.
No ego? That's pretty ridiculous.
@@StreetHierarchy You don't understand it.
@@StreetHierarchy That actually makes very little sense but maybe you can be excused for your misunderstanding of the English language being American.
I won't bother explaining it, I'm sure you're not worth educating.
What are you talking about? Ego was and is a BIG part of hip hop and the Beastie Boys were partakers of it as well. Anytime there's any bragging on the mic about your skills being top notch, ego is behind it.

The Beastie Boys are good rappers and musicians, and a good trio, but the thing about the group that really stands out as time goes by is that Mixmaster Mike is like the greatest DJ of all time, an incandescent talent who towers over everyone else who does what he does. I mean good lord, he doesn't even use headphones. Dude knows the records so totally he just throws it down and does it all live.
That Mike D handstand at 3:28 was hard af
I can DJ and I distinctly remember not believing that this beat could be done by scratching until I actually saw the video of him doing it. It's a really difficult beat to do, with the snare drum sample coming before the kick drum (with hi-hat over it) on the record. It's insanely fast and precise stuff. One continuous take, no needle skips, and such a funky, awesome beat. I don't think it's ever been topped!
i know absolutely nothing about DJing but seeing this for the first time blew my mind, i had no clue how the fuck mixmaster mike did this
Well, its Mix Master Mike of the Invisibl Skratch Piklz. One of the Gods of DJing. I'm a DJ since 87 and had to realize, no matter how hard I try I could never reach that level. I'm not worried, I do what I can and enjoy and give respect to Djs that have so much more skills. He's a real Master. And yeah, MCA won't be forgotten. I always liked his rap and his voice. Hope to meet his spirit sometime somewhere.
@@peterpiper0815 Can you link something like that? even better if one is able to see the turntable and hands of the perfomer of that song during?
