I was never interested in ants until I saw your channel in the recommendation section. The first video I saw was you fire ants planning an escape. I thought the title was funny so I watched it and now I am SOO interested! Thanks bro! P.S. Shouldn't ants be under a heating lamp? I don't know..
+Alex ._. Thank you! No, ants don't need a heating lamp unless you are keeping them in a cool, air conditioned room. The nest will also need a heating cable or mat. They are like reptiles that way.
And also, normally, when you are using lamps, it's to change their temperature. If you got the queen nearby, I don't think you need it unless you keep it in a room that's cold... well.. If you ordered it, and it is from another country, I don't suggest doing it cause it can resolve in escaping and either bringing an alien type of literally anything that could affect the environment, or die. You can find most of the informations online about their normal climat temperature, environment and feeding type. Since it's been a while, I wonder what happened... Edit: Always get informations about the animal that you are willing to have as a pet. Plus, it's AntsLove!
Alright. Doing deep dive start on your videos and it’s really refreshing to see a creator go even more wholesome/informative versus all the other creators that went more sensationalist. Inspiring.
hey I definitely appreciate the information. my girlfriend has several question in regards to hibernating and you answered every single one of them. keep it up and keep this great Channel alive
A few years ago, I got a few ants and a small container for them for Christmas. Unfortunately, it was before I watched these videos, so I didn't know how to care for them. Anyway, I got them in a little tube that was kept cold. The ants were huddled together and not moving, so we at first thought they were dead, but then they started to move around after warming up inside. I realized that they must do that in the cold, in order to hibernate. Hopefully, I'll get more one day and know how to properly care for them, thanks to watching your channel :)
hey !! I have a question! What happens if you separate 1/3 of your ant colony for about two months and then join them back together ? Will they fight or will they remember each other ????
We live on an old construction landfill where it use to be a swamp. You dig 2 feet then hit 6 inches of clay. After that you have tree branches, stumps, cement chunks, and tons of STILL LIVING CLAMS! I can’t imagine the ants liking that area but they die cause the underground tunnels to make sink holes because of releasing built up air. 50 years later and I can still dig where gutters drain and find living clams under the clay. I can pull up tree branches that won’t decay because of lack of air.
AntsCanada lol in all ur vids I feel like there's ants crawling on me and sometimes one or two actually are. I live in Florida so that's nothing new. They are sugar ants though so they are Mostly harmless. Although they make my cat's lips swollen when she tries to eat them. :( also I luv honeypot ants and the Golden Empire. I would never actually keep and ant Colony because it looks so hard in ur vids. Prob cuz ur taking care of like 4 ant colonies.
One correction - The subsurface temperature, at the depth where it remains constant year-round, is the mean average of the yearly temperature for that location. (Not necessarily 10C.) It's warmer in Brazil, colder in Norway. Warmer in California at sea level, colder in California in the mountains. I spent my youth exploring caves all over the world and the temperature of most areas of large caves is constant. Believe me, the Minnesota caves are much, much colder than the caves in Costa Rica! (And much less active biologically, too.)
I live in Canada and usually around late September early October I simply put my colony in my shed with some blankets and sheets over the colony, haven't had any issues.
As kids we used sports freeze on ants. Truly amazing how they turned into little isicles, then they thawed up and kept on working as if nothing had ever happened.
Are Honey Bees actually related to ants? Apis Mellifera ? Also, here in the Northeastern United States, I see mounds that around 1 foot in diameter and approximately domed a little over one foot high, covered in grass. The water table is high and these mounds are filled with ants, particularly prominent in winter. Do you have a video showing ants making above ground water escapes like that? If you'd like to see it, I can make a video, but I think the ants would be exposed after breaking it open and would die in the cold. Thanks for the interesting video and ant facts :) Thumbs UP!
SageePrime sort of termites. Termites are insects but they aren't particularly close to ants. They are closest to cockroaches. Also bees, wasps and maybe ants most likely evolved eusociality separately as there are solitary bees and wasps.
honestly I am completely drunk and was thinking, how do ants survive winter as I saw a frozen colony/nest outside the day befor. I learned a lot, truefacts
It's a general rule of thumb, yes, but imagine things like caves, where the air will cool, so will the ground around it, or perhaps the colony is on a hill, so while from above you're rapidly getting deeper, but from the sides it's more gradual.
Got 2 Queen + 6-10 workers of Messor Aciculatus on the way and just wanted to know if it was true that they don't need to be hibernated? I planned on using a 5W heatmat and gradually introducing the queen up to a maximum of 25C and see how she responds with her brood development in the founding stages if she is accepting of the heat. I live in the UK so winters can get relatively cold here but not drastic - though I understand hibernation is critical for colony success if the species does require it however want to ensure the best for my queen since the site specifies they didn't need hibernation but I have found conflicting sources since they appear to have less documentation than most species.
Hey AntsCanada, I like your channel, just found it by chance. When I was young I often caught and released soft shelled turtles for pets after keeping them a while. and I was given an ant farm. Unfortunately there were no ant care books in my library and I never saw a queen inside. They all perished and I don't know why. Maybe I can figure something out from watching a few of your videos.
It's negative 20 for me! And I have very sensitive skin, so when I'm warm, I'm really hot. And when I'm cold, I'm an ice cube. So when I get warm and then go outside, the change takes a toll on my body
I'm not sure about this, but I DO have an ant farm, but they don't breed. When you said, "Give the queen a break" I got concerned on whether I should do this or not.
I came here because I was splitting wood today and the logs were filled with ants. Was interesting to see them wake up when I put the in my hands and warmed them up with my breathe.
+Snooky Zun A glycerol water solution freezes at temperatures near -40C. It explains a lot doesn't it? I know in Canada, it can get mighty cold, but ants still survive.

AntsCanada (im sorry to bother you God of Ants but plz let the Golden Empire move into the new terrarium)
At the beginning, he said in some places, winters can get to -40 Celsius. That is equal to -40 f. Celcius or Fahrenheit are unnecessary details at -40
Are Honey Bees actually related to ants? Apis Mellifera ? Also, here in the Northeastern United States, I see mounds that around 1 foot in diameter and approximately domed a little over one foot high, covered in grass. Bees, Ants, and wasps(maybe termites too) all come from a common ancestor
SageePrime sort of termites. Termites are insects but they aren't particularly close to ants. They are closest to cockroaches. Also bees, wasps and maybe ants most likely evolved eusociality separately as there are solitary bees and wasps.
Technically if you believe in evolution everything is related to each other all from some common ancestor
Blade The Shinobi as I said they are all insects so they are closer than most but not as close as bees wasps and ants
JuicyWatermelone *species*.
Just learned something new
These older videos are still great, Mikey.
This was so interesting!
honestly I am completely drunk and was thinking, how do ants survive winter
as I saw a frozen colony/nest outside the day befor. I learned a lot, truefacts
There was a smiley face at 0:56
I saw it
The Haunted Life where?
I saw it 😄😄
Miss Sugar Pink what where?
Miss Sugar Pink lol
MORE VIDS FASTER PLZZ (I LOVE THEM)

I already knew but I'm not an ant keeper I'm just very intrigued by ants and a large amount of animals, space, and nature in general.
Just out of curiosity. Do you have any videos on honey pot ants?
He does :D
aw~~
thank you and happy holiday >.
Amazing channel, thank you :))
cool
In Bronx New York it's is currently 67°F right now and I have not seen one worker.
+Jayden Huertas hibernation season is in full effect. :)
Lowest temperature where I live (and ants) is negative (-) 45 degrees Celsius. Greetings from Norway :3
Voez lol greetings from California! :3
Sakura Vlogs gosh what's lowest temperature you've experienced in California?
Voez I believe 35 degrees.. It never snowed because it has to be below 32
Sakura Vlogs snow at 32? That's like summer wtf
Haha its like 25 degree Celsius here (77 degree) which is as cold as it goes. Greetings from Saudi Arabia lmao
I've been hibernating my pet marauder ants for 2 years already, they seem fine, just as pretty as 2016 when they went to sleep
0.55 Dat small smiley face on the top left
nice, thx!!! why did i not found your channel earlier ! ))
Hi how are you? Thank you for the great video
good
The deeper from the ground you go, the further from the surface you go ..................................
It's a general rule of thumb, yes, but imagine things like caves, where the air will cool, so will the ground around it, or perhaps the colony is on a hill, so while from above you're rapidly getting deeper, but from the sides it's more gradual.
what the fuck are you talking about?
+arodlilman the more deeper you get the hotter it gets
So I guess your gonna say the earth core is hot, wrong it's an ice ball dumb ass
Mr. Mikey I am your fan from vigan! We took pictures in front of max. (my uncle was the dude who took so many pictures)
your videos are awesome
this was well-made. :)
+Ramir Arcega Thank you!
Great video
keep making more videos
Could the glycerol be used to keep the dirt from freezing to help stop collapses?
But then it thaws. That's one of the ways sidewalks and roads get cracks in them. But while frozen it would still be quite strong
Hello! Mikey Bustos I Luv Ur Vlogs And Ant Videos!
About that pic of the dirt and grass... I saw that smiley face!
Aka 0:50
Aka 0:50
+Meowmers The great around it
Still watching thru ur videos.. still thinking how is this not an actual educational tv show

For such a tiny insect they are quite clever
Awesome video, but I just don't understand, how do they get food in the winter?
They store it in their gasters
The intro is so nostalgic
So for winter ants, do you hibernate them with heating coils or something instead?
+Shannon Chu No, no need for that.
I remember a beetle that has a hard shell and go in ant colonies and basically live with them since the ants can't hurt it.
What's the best climate for ants
what seasons can you keep ants
Hey AntsCanada, I like your channel, just found it by chance. When I was young I often caught and released soft shelled turtles for pets after keeping them a while. and I was given an ant farm. Unfortunately there were no ant care books in my library and I never saw a queen inside. They all perished and I don't know why. Maybe I can figure something out from watching a few of your videos.
the way he said you'll kill them killed me!
0:11 do you realize that at -40 degrees you don't have to say whether it is celsius or fahrenheit because it is almost exactly the same?
So it means tropical ants have no break, as winter ants do have?
It's negative 20 for me!
And I have very sensitive skin, so when I'm warm, I'm really hot.
And when I'm cold, I'm an ice cube.
So when I get warm and then go outside, the change takes a toll on my body
Its a winter season , while holding a cookies ,i wondered i dont see ants nowadays. And boom video time.
You should do another update video :)
Do you have to keep them cooler during winter?
I live In Southern California and bugs never stop wondering around so do they even hibernate
your videos kinda inspired me to make an ant colony too! where and how do i start? got any tips?
2:20 Workers: WAKE UP queen: no I’m still tired ... (10 days later) Workers: WAKE UP queen: I’m still tired :)
Another reason I should get a mini fridge in my ant room
"oh, and if you have tropical ants, do NOT hibernate them. you will kill them"
idk why but that was funny
I'm not sure about this, but I DO have an ant farm, but they don't breed. When you said, "Give the queen a break" I got concerned on whether I should do this or not.
what are the top ten best pet ant species in maryland
i feel like a spider is going to ask if he can watch what im watching.
I came here because I was splitting wood today and the logs were filled with ants. Was interesting to see them wake up when I put the in my hands and warmed them up with my breathe.
Niiice!! But what is the freezing point of glycerol? Do ants freeze in that temperature?
+Snooky Zun A glycerol water solution freezes at temperatures near -40C. It explains a lot doesn't it? I know in Canada, it can get mighty cold, but ants still survive.
***** Mighty nature wow
