Eh keep em together. No point in starting an experiment if you don't intend to see it through. All things considered. I'd say it was a surprisingly civil interaction given how hostile ants can be.
You let colony 1 have all the advantage of putting their scent everywhere already which is why none of the others came out. You should have put 8 separate compartments with one shared compartment in the middle with food that way the ants can establish themselves in their own compartments and then interact in the shared compartment
@@keturahmagee6413 well then you can put smaller foods in their own compartment which will of course run out and the valuable one in the middle, that way you can see whether they'd be hostile for the more valuable food or share it.
I've seen beekeepers paint a non toxic dot on queens to differentiate queens in colonies with multiples. That'd be a way to see if queen 5 is being taken care of and actually being able to watch as opposed to seeing and waiting for a dead queen and maybe it's number 5.
Queen number 5 is the one that only focuses on leveling up the first few characters to have some over powered body guards then she'll lay eggs like crazy
This guy: "After two months I got attached to these colonies" Also this guy two minutes later "Some of you may die, but that's a sacrifice I am willing to make"
Colony 1 had a very defined opening but the other colonies had their entrances partially covered by the cotton, which might had influenced them into staying inside. Another factor is that when #1 was opened, there were no traces of pheromones in the environment. By the time the other colonies were opened, #1 had already laid several pheromone paths and the other ants did smell that when exploring the possibility of venturing out, so they stayed inside as a natural safety. Really interesting insight into the lives of ants, thanks for sharing!
Yes and no The smell, yes, could have scared them, but in nature they would probably feel a lit of different colonies scents too About the entrance, it may have bored them a little, but you can see colony #1 dragging pieces of cotton with their feet when they enter the chamber so they don't really seem to care, and also ants are used to having to open new passages, and they could feel with they antennae that there was an opening there, they could feel the air and the smell of food from outside. We'll never know for sure why they didn't come out at first lol
This was so cool and neat one time me and my dad were working to build an unground trampoline for a costumer and I seen eggs and was like I'm taking you home now so I asked my dad and I found moor eggs and the QUEEN I am so Lucky
Can we take a minute to appreciate the bravery of that last scout from colony 1?. Walked into the wrong hood with a sack full of precious food and still managed to get away and make it back home safely.
How did I end up watching 30mins of ants crawling about and enjoying every second? How did I end up here at all? In any case, well done, thanks for sharing.
When someone is so passionate about something, even when it’s ants, they can make it entertaining. Like really, why am I watching this and enjoying it? It’s his enthusiasm and everything in his narration
Tube 5 queen is the most expendable one as she's likely already dead for failure to mate. She should be forced on another tube before the rest are opened again to make sure they will be ok.
I don't think I have ever been so invested in ants. I actually don't like insects at all, but the stories, the commentary, the lines you give to the different ants, it made the experience so awesome and I am now subscribed...yeah...
I remember reading an experiment where 2 colonies were placed in an environment but there was a mesh separating them. They were hostile towards each other, but the mesh prevented any serious fights from breaking out. After about a month, the mesh was lifted and the colonies joined, they were no longer fighting each other
Same techniqe with introducing a new kitten to the family. Let them smell each other with a door inbetween so They cant start a serious fight and give them time to accept the other one.
Separate, clean to remove trails, then simultaneously connect 2 (excluding the very bold #1) at opposite ends. I think #1 has claimed the territory, and all the others are repelled
I have to believe that they didn't kill the interloper because they knew that she wasn't a threat. If they had wanted her dead, she would have been killed right off the bat. They wanted information, primarily where she got that full gastor from. Keep them together! This is going to be VERY educational! Besides, letting all but one go would leave me wondering how they turned out. This is a new epic story that HAS to be told!
Yeah, this is probably the start of co existence since like you said, the interloper would of been killed if the other colony wanted her dead and was seen as a threat, so yeah I agree.
Thats all I could think. Lol Like 1. They're probably crawling all over him at night. 2. He said they're a pest species. 3. They leave sawdust from burrowing. Aka, destroying the integrity of the home. Aahhhhh! Lmao
Continue the experiment it appeared the colony3 was trying to inspect colony1 scout since the scout was trying to escape colony 3 was passive aggressive not wanting to lose the opportunity to discover food and a easy way to the source, if you feel that the should be separated than group them in pairs so the can create scent trails and have a feeling for what's to come. This is there first exposure to the outside
It seems to me like the first colony, having marked the territory and perhaps filled it with its "scent", and with it being such a confined space, caused the other colonies to stay put. Quite interesting, thanks for sharing.
Pretty sure that's the situation, additionally the colonies are all hungry meaning they're week atm...if colonies become aggressive it will be #1 taking over as they will soon have have numbers and strength to fight. But they may merge as well. Its intriguing to see the outcome
Idk if the comment make sense but paralisis caused by fear is common to greater living beeings, maybe she just got feared and this ended up with her reactions? Personally i think this sounds quite justificated faced 4+this massive AF queen × 1
I had a fire ant colony who was small (10-15 ants) and the queen died from mold. I added a second queen to see if the ants would accept her and they did! they used her to replace their old queen! It was amazing seeing it in person.
Yeah! Same, I don’t really pay attention to ants and their existence, I don’t hate them though, but you made all your random videos about ants seem so interesting, I’m pretty sure I binged watched like 30 or something
Im pretty sure that the first scout filled the arena with its scent. Thats usually a good idea if you want to bring foreign animals together - use neutral space for meeting the first time. Since ants are pretty much always marking their territory it would have been a good idea to let them all in the arena at the same time.
That little scuffle seems like a good sign to me. Regardless, you can’t be too careful. I’d disconnect all but two colonies and just give them more time to intermingle. That way, we’ll learn more about these ants’ inter-colony behaviours, but not risk all colonies should they turn out to be more aggressive
It's at the regurgitation of food was more of an offering than a panic response. The fact that there was no retaliation from her original colony shows that none of the colonies are strong enough to go on the offensive.
@ everyone scrolling through the comments on this: please LIKE so we can boost it to the top and make sure AC reads it. I agree that it looks like they may be able to integrate, but, like you said, we don't want to risk everything. The responsible move, I think, would be to separate them... But also, we don't want to make the other colonies look weak, either. Maybe pairing them up in different enclosures would help. That way, they aren't overwhelmed with the scents of six other colonies all at once. Here's how I would divide it: 1 🤝 3 2 🤝 4 🤝 5 6 🤝 8 5 is included in a set of three because introducing her later, when there are tons of other ants that might act aggressive towards her, would be more dangerous (at least, I would assume, based on my limited knowledge of ant behavior), so it's best to try and get her to integrate with a smaller group that can still provide for her. If all goes well, the three groups can meet up once they have worked their own situations out, and ideally, that would put each colony under less stress.
Colony 1 had a better opening. 2 and 3 had cotton hairs in the way, this is mostly the reason for their hesitation. Spider web and cotton hair feel quite similar.. even to ants I bet 😂.
Honestly they seemed more curious on who the ant was then agressive, if they wanted to kill colony 1s worker it would not have left the chamber alive. I'd like to see what happens next, I've a feeling that they will join together if given the chance.
That’s what I’m thinking as well but I don’t understand ants and insects behavior so idk. But honestly that seems logical because they are the same species of ant and maybe the recognize that eventhough they’re not the same colony. Two things I know about animals they like to reproduce to continue the species and they like to survive so I wouldn’t be surprised that they’d join forces but it would be interesting to see as how they do it
I think you affected any potential results by clearly making the opening from colony #1 into the tank much different than the other colonies. All the other colonies had cotton surrounding and sometimes partially covering the end of the tube.
Yeah, and I think that opening all of them at once would have made for a better experiment, instead of letting one colony explore the space first. It seemed to me that when the other colonies explored the opening, they detected the scent of the first colony, and therefor avoided venturing out. I wonder if there is a way to entice them to go out despite that. Perhaps giving them a smaller chamber to explore that then connects into the central hub?
@@thefulchman Yes, I think placing jelly closed on each colonies, then slowly placing it further away, but closer to center, until it's just a giant jelly on the center
Yess!! This is exactly what I was thinking when I saw how he opened the tubes into the arena. I think it may be affecting the ant’s ability or confidence in leaving the tube. The cotton seemed to be catching onto the ant’s legs when walking out, so I think that this may have an unbelievably large impact on their willingness to leave.
AC: "... before you start bashing me..." Too late for the bashing, unfortunately. The rhetoric was unreal before the video was even out! Those of us who see your true love and passion for ants, knew that you weren't trying to have an ant battle royal! Love this video! Worth the wait!! ❤❤
we all know he loves his ants, my issue is he kinda chased the clickbait with the "Arena" in the title, which makes it sound like he is intentionally trying to start an ant battle royale
I was thinking well he wouldn't put a video up of him intentionally starting an ant war with nanitics. Im excited to see where this goes. I say keep the experiment going but close off all ant colonies except 1 and 3. See what happens then slowly introduce the other colonies.
He just put some ants in a fish tank and recorded it then told us what he saw so calm down but the video editing and sound editing was a slight display of talent so I do give him that but it's not something that you yourself couldn't do.. Naw I'm just trolling being a dumba$$ but in all honesty he did an excellent job 👏 👍 he deserves some recognition 👏 😄
He has that effect on people. I found this channel a year ago and have watched quite a number of his videos in between waiting for the next weeks upload
Even if they were released at once, there's no guarantee that the ants would emerge simultaneously. Whichever colony emerges first would mark the area as their territory with their pheromones. That would basically mean game over for the other ants even trying to leave I think.
I actually agree with this statement. I'm not saying that this is the direct issue but I always remember the phrase correlation is not causation which in this case something u didn't notice happened when u added the first colony that didn't happen with the other colonies
I purchased a house in Nova Scotia. I had unwanted, nonpaying "guests" living in my walls. When we stripped the inside walls down to the studs we found many Carpenter Ant Colonies in the structure. The original colony got big enough they separated and formed new colonies though out my house. There had been previous water damage unknown to me at the time of purchase so the Carpenter Ants had plenty to burrow through. We managed to remove the colonies throughout the home and repaired all the damaged wood. The point to my story is that although they all lived in the walls of one home, they built their colonies away from the original colony. I suspect they would run into each other once in a while but they were definitely separate colonies.
I was already aware of ants being intelligent just like most life out there but man was it so cool watching how these ants interacted with the world around them. I started to get attached to those guys! I was relieved that scout number 6 from the first colony survived its encounter with colony number 3. The way they pass information to one another and interact with their environment is simply amazing. This was exciting. Thank you for your efforts on raising these little guys and for setting up a clever experiment. It’s truly a blessing being able to observe how these ants grow and learn. I’m not religious but is this how God feels observing us and every other species?! So exciting!

@Darth_Italy actual and sounds? They don't make sounds? With what organs would they make sounds? If your smaöl enough you could hear their taps on the floor but there are no sounds lol
I think you should keep Colony 1 outside of this experiment, because they seem to be the strongest colony at the moment, and if the worst was to happen you'd at would have a strong colony as a backup.
Well since they are the strongest they won’t be at risk the other colonies will but I think he should keep them together but I respect your opinion (we are a friendly community)
they are not the strongest, it's only because their "opening" is totally clear and the uploader didn't clear all of the strands away from the other colonies, if you look closely the ants use their feelers not their eyes and even 1 strand in the way and they think the entrance is totally blocked.
I have a theory as to why the other colonies are so shy. You introduced the first colony way before the others and the first had time to send out scouts too which likely filled the space with foreign smells and that is probably why the other colonies are being so very cautious.
the first ant of the second colony was like, “y’all smell that shtt?!” i love how cautious they were though, and shows how cool instincts and senses were at hand
it could also be that they didnt have the amount of ants to venture out yet since colony 1 had the most ants probably had the most reason to go out tho it is probably both
Keep them together, the fact that they didn't kill the scout and the fact even the Queen came to check the scout out in my opinion is a good sign that they will eventually team up :)
Sounds like a movie, imagine you were just an explorer tasked by the Queen to venture and find food, and suddenly while you were exploring you came face to face with the whole kingdom and another queen that you don't know came right up to you to check you out... :l
"That's one small step for ant, one giant leap for antkind" - the first Colony 1 scout, probably On a serious note, the other colonies probably don't want to come out because they detect Colony 1's scent/pheromones and dominance and thus they're scared. Colony 1 clearly has the high ground in this and if you want to still keep them together (though I honestly don't think you should because of the risk they can still be monogynous), I suggest removing Colony 1 and keeping them separate alongside Colony 7

He got ants crawling all over his home and he's happy about it 💀
Colony 1 had a very defined opening but the other colonies had their entrances partially covered by the cotton, which might had influenced them into staying inside.
Yes I thought so too…. He should have made their opening entrance properly cleared….
Yes and no
The smell, yes, could have scared them, but in nature they would probably feel a lit of different colonies scents too
About the entrance, it may have bored them a little, but you can see colony #1 dragging pieces of cotton with their feet when they enter the chamber so they don't really seem to care, and also ants are used to having to open new passages, and they could feel with they antennae that there was an opening there, they could feel the air and the smell of food from outside.
We'll never know for sure why they didn't come out at first lol
Probably you should have introduced them all at once or rather create an entirely new environment to try that out...

Definitely keep them together. This interaction is altogether different from the usual binary of kill or cohabitate

I agree 1 and 3 should be kept together since they have already encountered
Agreed, let just keep 1 and 3 connected and remove the others. Let's see what happens between these two colonies before trying again with the rest.
Here's how I would divide it:
1 🤝 3
2 🤝 4 🤝 5
6 🤝 8
5 is included in a set of three because introducing her later, when there are tons of other ants that might act aggressive towards her, would be more dangerous (at least, I would assume, based on my limited knowledge of ant behavior), so it's best to try and get her to integrate with a smaller group that can still provide for her.
If all goes well, the three groups can meet up once they have worked their own situations out, and ideally, that would put each colony under less stress.
Hey, that is actually the best idea

Honestly they seemed more curious on who the ant was then agressive, if they wanted to kill colony 1s worker it would not have left the chamber alive.
I'd like to see what happens next, I've a feeling that they will join together if given the chance.
That’s what I’m thinking as well but I don’t understand ants and insects behavior so idk. But honestly that seems logical because they are the same species of ant and maybe the recognize that eventhough they’re not the same colony. Two things I know about animals they like to reproduce to continue the species and they like to survive so I wouldn’t be surprised that they’d join forces but it would be interesting to see as how they do it
24 hour ant war
I think you affected any potential results by clearly making the opening from colony #1 into the tank much different than the other colonies. All the other colonies had cotton surrounding and sometimes partially covering the end of the tube.
Yeah, and I think that opening all of them at once would have made for a better experiment, instead of letting one colony explore the space first. It seemed to me that when the other colonies explored the opening, they detected the scent of the first colony, and therefor avoided venturing out. I wonder if there is a way to entice them to go out despite that. Perhaps giving them a smaller chamber to explore that then connects into the central hub?

@@patrikkarlsson9463 this is actually really good feedback, experiments are supposed to be corrected and repeatedable!
Yess!! This is exactly what I was thinking when I saw how he opened the tubes into the arena. I think it may be affecting the ant’s ability or confidence in leaving the tube. The cotton seemed to be catching onto the ant’s legs when walking out, so I think that this may have an unbelievably large impact on their willingness to leave.

i love how AC wrote a semi-book when the ant got kidnapped
I think the mistake was releasing them one at a time. I think the scent of the first colony intimidated the rest.
I don't think that the experiment is over just yet u just need to find out the difference and before the experiment becomes unsalvagable

Is this like the moral of this vid if so thanks

Good idea!
Agreed

100%
I came to say the same. the main chamber smelled of colony 1. the video even says they left a smell trail for their buddies
I actually had the exact same thought as soon as colony 2 was too shy to exit
the first ant of the second colony was like, “y’all smell that shtt?!” i love how cautious they were though, and shows how cool instincts and senses were at hand
it could also be that they didnt have the amount of ants to venture out yet since colony 1 had the most ants probably had the most reason to go out tho it is probably both
ABSOLUTE CINEMA!!!
Thanks for watching!🐜
Keep them together, the fact that they didn't kill the scout and the fact even the Queen came to check the scout out in my opinion is a good sign that they will eventually team up :)
Sounds like a movie, imagine you were just an explorer tasked by the Queen to venture and find food, and suddenly while you were exploring you came face to face with the whole kingdom and another queen that you don't know came right up to you to check you out... :l
"That's one small step for ant, one giant leap for antkind" - the first Colony 1 scout, probably
On a serious note, the other colonies probably don't want to come out because they detect Colony 1's scent/pheromones and dominance and thus they're scared. Colony 1 clearly has the high ground in this and if you want to still keep them together (though I honestly don't think you should because of the risk they can still be monogynous), I suggest removing Colony 1 and keeping them separate alongside Colony 7
Attitude matters
