Scott, at the end, discovered the most reliable adage of every practical special effects artist of the 70s and 80s about how to get a great head explosion. Just shoot a model head with a shotgun. Will reliably explode better than anything else you do. Notable examples: Dawn of the Dead 1978? Shotgun. Maniac 1980? Shotgun. Scanners? Shotgun.
Ever since I was young, I was told the sawed off is only to get a bigger spread at close range. That's why the coachman riding "shotgun" usually had a sawed off for when any bandits tried to actually board the coach, while in motion, it gave them more chance of hitting them and then they carried Colt revolvers for backup.

Growing up in the 70s, my friend's dad was a Civil War Reenactor and Collector, he had an original Walker 44, and was a wealth of knowledge. One day he heard us talking about a movie where the stunt man went flying backwards and explained how they did it, and said in real life it would never happen, because anything that powerful would send you flying backwards too, so since I was about 10 (50 years ago) I have laughed every time I saw that happen.
My father said the same thing... the good old "every action has an equal and opposite re-action". If they're going flying, you're going flying from that recoil!
Exactly - it's the same principle with "rail guns" that so many SF writers seem to be hung up on - the energy released when the projectile hits has to be applied to the projectile when it's fired and, not only doesn that mean a huge power source, but the conservation of momentum/Newton's Third Law of Motion means the recoil also has to balance the energy release. Same thing with the BS about military orbitally launched impactors - while they can provide a lot of energy in a small area, they need to be given at least as much energy during the launch and, in practice, the true balance will be closer to 100 times (depending on lifter efficiencies) as much energy used to lift them into orbit as will be released in a ground strike. Now, if one were to redirect something like an asteroid it will have a much longer fall into Earth's gravity well, and so apply a LOT more damage for a relatively small energy transfer to steer the body in the required direction.
I'd like to see the difference, if any, between the damage done with contact shots. Longer barrels would give the gas more space to burn out and slow down expanding, shorter barrels would still have a lot of burn and expansion to go. A short barrel contact shot might blow apart a target more with the blast of gases despite a lower projectile velocity.
If Scott is so cold, wear a heavier winter coat. That flannel ain't gonna do nothing. Also, get a winter hat, my God the man has no hair. Then put some gloves on!
At 11:01 it is possible to see that the 9th pellet missed just beside the zombie's left arm, playing at 0,25x speed helps to see it. This is normal with buckshot that has 9 pellets in it. Reason is that the first two pellets in the shell are a pair and the 3rd & 4th pellet form a similar pair but at a 90 degree different rotation and this symmetrical pattern continues until the 8th pellet... put a ninth one and it breaks the pattern. That makes the 9th pellet to shoot off from the main group.
I have 00 9-shot Fiochi shells that are transparent. They are stacked 3x3x3. What manufacturer is stacking 2x2x2x2x1? I also have winchester sxz shells that are also 3x3x3. I can’t think of a realistic reason that an ammo manufacturer wouldn’t add a 2nd pellet and just make it 10.
A full-size shotgun will almost always be more effective for its design. BUT - you can hide a sawed-off with a birds-eye handle under most car seats. You can barely hide a full-size in the back seat of a car. So they each have their perks. 😃

With regards to the original DOOM 2: When using the Shotgun, the pellets don't spread vertically, just horizontally, and each shell only fires 7 pellets, so you can snipe a bit with that. When using the Super Shotgun, vertical spread is applied to each pellet, but you also shoot 20 pellets, so getting up close is the best action to take.

I think the sawed off is better in close quarters A shorter barrel makes it easier to move around in tight/close spaces(such as your home) while a longer barrel would be more difficult The spread in close quarters while still being accurate enough for all the pellets to hit they would spread out just enough to hit more of whatever your shooting at(theoretically) It looks cooler than a full size let's be honest that's a win
Going with a shoulder stock is gonna help you hit so much, the pistol grip sawed off is a last resort only if you can't fit anything else IMO... and be careful with the spread of those pellets 😁
@@mattigator600 With a short barrel, there's less recoil, and a full stock can critically compromise it's manueverability use in close quarters while offering little benefit because it further restricts it's use. Another advantage of the shorter barrel is there is less chance of a shot penetrating the walls/doors, to injure people in the next room.
Hey Scott, great content as always! From what I've been reading lately it seems as though much like a rifle, with shotguns barrel length has almost nothing to do with spread and is almost entirely controlled by the choke, barrel length only adds velocity and balance for swing through when hunting or shooting clays. In theory the sawed off should have more 'knock back power' due to the larger impact area as you mentioned, as long as its energy was high enough from the lower velocity, it would have been cool to see if that effect was intensified with something like #8 birdshot to evenly spread the impact energy even more. Could be a fun video idea to rig something to test knock back power over penetration and maybe even include some different chokes for 12g? This could also be a fun comparison for the elephant guns. Keep up the amazing videos!
I think that the reason people have sawen off shotguns is for the power in a smaller package but a long barreled shotgun, just like any other kind of gun, will always be more powerful due to the greater velocity that the extra barrel length gives.

The pistol grip broke after 100+ attempts and almost ripped a guy's tumb off. That gun along with many others got stolen when we went to Illinois for Christmas.

I think you should have loaded both barrels and pulled the trigger on the double barrels so you get both barrels at once because a lot of people in home defense situations and other scenarios don't really think about it and tend to do that
I was thinking this as well. Also, I think that with a person standing, there would be enough force to knock them back and or to the ground, but not very far away or through a wall. Unless the person happened to fall backwards through drywall or something
@@anthonyboatman9328 "For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction." 9:44 There are ways around that. Modernized grips, improved sights, stuff like that. Pistol-style sights instead of a bead would be a good start. I never thought about shotgun barrel length until I shot my Judge 410 revolver with a 2 inch barrel into a dirt bank. The pattern was about 15 feet wide at 20 feet away. It surprised me he had as many pellets as he did. Funny thing about the cold. 2 weeks ago it was 25 below zero at my house for several days. Then it warmed up to 20 above and I went and worked outside feeling "warm" enough to work without gloves.
Your Judge also has a .45 caliber rifled barrel. The rifling is probably spinning the shot cup and therefore the shot. So, the centrifugal force is making the shot spread even more than it would naturally.
@@tt600pch I would say it certainly does. All pistols have shorter barrels, but they still have rifling. Also there are rifled choke tubes that are made for shooting slugs, and choke tubes are really short. Anyway, Paul Harrel has done videos where he tested rifled choke tubes and found they did in fact make a difference with sabot slugs. So, yeah, it should make a difference. You gotta remember the shot cup is moving pretty fast as it travels down that barrel. That's gonna make the spin the rifling imparts on it pretty fast. For shot loads that spins spreads the pattern. For slugs it tightens it, but it requires more spin to stabilize a slug than it does to spread because there are different forces at work. It's centrifugal force that spreads shot whereas it's a physics phenomenon called precession that stabilizes bullets. Anyway, if you watched this video, even though he did get some additional spread from the shorter barrels, he certainly didn't get the amount you did. The rifling in your barrel made a difference.
With a sawn off, try choking the barrels at the end. It takes some work (milling and tapping), but your pattern will carry a lot tighter. That's how I've done it, and it works!!
Sawn off might get you more wounding at short ranges as your spread will be larger (which might make it more likely that your target doesn't get back up, but then so would a properly aimed shot from a full length shotgun), but it's never going to be "more powerful" because less of the energy in the shell is being constrained by the barrel and using to accelerate the pellets.
I would be interested to see how #4 buckshot performs. Of course the close range is best for the sawed-off. And I think with a little distance the sawed-off could take out multiple targets standing close together, especially with more pellets.
Scott, when the weather is cold you could wear at least one glove, on your non-dominant hand. I was a police officer for many years in a cold climate and I didn't wear a glove on my shooting hand, but I did on my other hand. One warm hand is better than no warm hands. Just a thought. Oh yeah, and long underwear really helps keep your core warm too. p.s. great video, as always.
I was waiting all through the video to see the zombie head get Super Goosed. Scott never disappoints! In cowboy action shooting, a lot of people use really short cylinder bore shotguns. I use a full length shotgun with full chokes. Those short shotguns can have some issues with knocking down targets at times. My long barrel with full chokes hits them like a freight train.
With a 34" barrel on the Super Goose it's a yard closer to the target than the other guns. You should have added a yard to the distance it shot from, just to make up for that extra-length barrel.

I always though the idea of a sawed off was to have a wider spread at distance. Also since it’s shorter it’s quicker to draw, easier to conceal, and gives big power in a close range small package. One trigger pull sends nine 30 caliber balls… that’s like a half a mag in one pull.

The advantage of sawed offs has always been concealment and ease of movement within a confined space/tight quarters....also gives a wider spread making it a great close quarter weapon.
Love the content Scott and thanks for braving the cold. I live in SD so cold is relative but I understand your pain and discomfort. ;-) I've never heard or thought it was implied /led to believe that they were more "powerful" than a standard long barreled shotgun. They are depicted as more concealable and easily carried, and more easily wielded effectively in close quarters, without sacrificing too much lethality, again in close quarters. These are "pop into a doorway and blast everything in the room with both barrels" gun, not a "20 yard one barrel at a time" gun.
I think getting an intermediate length barrel would be ideal unless you were hunting, matt did one on different shotgun barrel lengths and the spread was very comparable all the way down to 5 inches
I haven't watched the full video yet, but I will say that the one utility I can see of a Sawn-off compared to a regular shotgun is that the sawn-off is more portable at the cost of useable range, like how a crowbar or a mallet are easier to transport compared to a shovel or a mace, but a mace hits hard and a shovel can dig. It's all about utility for transpotability in this case. Edit: So, he shot all 4 buckshots, and that spread checks out with what I said so far.

Also likely easier to move around inside of the carriage
@@techmetal2964 this, if you notice lots of naval weapon versions have shorter barrels and stocks because nobody wants to carry a full size m1 garand in a ship
better spread at danger close a longer barrel the pellets stay together in a smaller group until they go a good ways if you're on a coach they're within 5ft you want that spread to start as soon as they leave the barrels
@@syllycatfacethe mental image of the full-size garand at sea is Hilarious cuz at least one person is getting clotheslined by their own rifle and a doorframe 😂
One needs to adapt to the enviroment. :D Full sized weapons are more powerful then their shortened versions , but they also are more cumbersome (On a ship I would assume its more about the fact that a shorter weapon is much better to handle in enclosed spaces (as it would be kinda annoying to have the barrel get stuck on a wall or pipe or something) then the weight :D
The super goose 10 gauge was very impressive. And it's like you said, the sawed off looks cooler, but the 10 gauge is devastating
What do you think? Are sawed off shotguns more powerful? I hope you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching!
I love ur videos and yes I think sawed off shotguns are more powerful at close range

I don't know if they are, but they certainly are cooler.
NOPE
In no way can they be “more powerful” however. They require less accuracy to shoot the bad guy with buckshot in your bedroom 😂

Everyone forgets you have to factor the "cool" power multiplier in when using a sawn off shotgun. A Sawn off shotgun when used correctly recieves a X5 power multiplier due to the distinct level of cool it oozes.

My dad said if something was powerful enough to blow you back that far then it still wouldn't, it would just obliterate anything it hits.
That's just because our 80s action heroes were far too manly to be thrown by something as silly as recoil... or physics in general really.

Cool fact!

With regards to the original DOOM 2:
When using the Shotgun, the pellets don't spread vertically, just horizontally, and each shell only fires 7 pellets, so you can snipe a bit with that.
When using the Super Shotgun, vertical spread is applied to each pellet, but you also shoot 20 pellets, so getting up close is the best action to take.

I think the sawed off is better in close quarters
A shorter barrel makes it easier to move around in tight/close spaces(such as your home) while a longer barrel would be more difficult
The spread in close quarters while still being accurate enough for all the pellets to hit they would spread out just enough to hit more of whatever your shooting at(theoretically)
It looks cooler than a full size let's be honest that's a win
Going with a shoulder stock is gonna help you hit so much, the pistol grip sawed off is a last resort only if you can't fit anything else IMO... and be careful with the spread of those pellets 😁
@@mattigator600
With a short barrel, there's less recoil, and a full stock can critically compromise it's manueverability use in close quarters while offering little benefit because it further restricts it's use.
Another advantage of the shorter barrel is there is less chance of a shot penetrating the walls/doors, to injure people in the next room.
@@gordowg1wg145shorter barrel means more recoil
Thanks for the comparison. Now I will have something to compare my Turkish 14" pump with chokes and raptor grip to.
Keep up the amazing videos!
i feel targeted with him saying “toasty little fingers (it’s summer) sitting on the toilet”😂😂
I think that the reason people have sawen off shotguns is for the power in a smaller package but a long barreled shotgun, just like any other kind of gun, will always be more powerful due to the greater velocity that the extra barrel length gives.
Also shorter barrel means easier to hide

9:44 There are ways around that. Modernized grips, improved sights, stuff like that. Pistol-style sights instead of a bead would be a good start. Overall best "shorty" type of shotgun, if we're sticking with conventional/traditional designs, would be a SWAT-style entry gun.

@@stefanl5183 I wonder if the rifling makes any difference in the 3 total inches the wad of shot travels through in exiting the revolver.
7:03 flashback to that one time i was shooting guns in -30 degrees Celsius weather lol
You definitely called it!
That was a shockingly fast, but incredibly efficient, craniectomy at the end there.
With a 34" barrel on the Super Goose it's a yard closer to the target than the other guns. You should have added a yard to the distance it shot from, just to make up for that extra-length barrel.
