Every time the “expert” tells Rick how much he could get for the item restored is always lower than what it ends up being when it’s done. Def in-cahoots.
Right? Like, that's not how value works my guy, its determined by authenticity, not how clean it is. I hate how when they see a sword they say it has rust and gashes in it the condition isn’t good but sometimes they say it never saw battle and there’s no story so which one is it?!
@@kevsta67 Moreover a business like a pawn shop will only ever pay an undercut price, for the actual full estimated value on an appraisal your looking at an auction house.
To be fair that is just basic negotiating. Why start low and put yourself at a lower starting point? If you start at the top and work down slowly you will get more money. The pawn guys are basically doing the same thing just in the other direction, notice how their first offer is always laughably low? If the price to pay for that is looking like a jackass on national TV then so be it.
Why do the people selling stuff to the pawn shop never understand that the pawn shop needs to make money, the appraiser is saying what they would sell for, not what the pawn shop would buy the item for.
Most probably do but you don't want to start out to low. Most people want to hear the offer of the pawnshop first before they name a price. If you wan't 10.000 you shouldn't start at 10.500.
i would assume its just in case they can still get their asking price, for example if their asking price is 1,000 and the expert says its around 800-1000 even though they probably couldnt get their asking price they might as well try just to see.
Why do you not understand that when negotiating, you should start high, they'll start low, and you meet in the middle? Although I do agree. Some people come into a pawn shop expecting to get retail price.
One thing I've always wondered about: Why do Americans even sell their antique furniture, books, paintings and whatnot to a PAWN SHOP? Back here in Europe pawn shops are for those who are basically bankrupt and you usually pawn your jewellery, power tools and such, with the intention of reclaiming them later. If you seriously want to sell/buy antiques, there are a antique shops, antiquarian bookshops and antiques auctions that specialize in that stuff.

I came to the comments just for this. I think that was an accident because I always believed the expert was suppose to say the price was a lot lower and the pawnshop and the expert had an agreement. I mean the customer is lucky to have an expert at all though.
He said it came out better than he thought

"would you call an old car with rust patina?" well considering most cars with patina do have surface rust, yes I do.
Exact thought I had when he said that.
Right? Like, that's not how value works my guy, its determined by authenticity, not how clean it is. Why do you think old baseball cards, old action figures, comic books, etc are worth so much more because they were never opened? Because that's how you maintain authenticity with the item. These guys are complete idiots.
Patina is literally just fancy rust let’s be real

This is why they are complete idiots.

The pawn guys faces when everyone starts at the experts top estimation lmao
