No one explains how to attach the flange to the wall except this video. Thanks for this video.
Glad it helped
Fantastic tips: using the razor to cut first, checking to see no leak before putting on the flange, and using finger to tidy up the caulk. I think I can do this now! P.S. Thanks for not using any annoying music.
Thanks Eva for the feedback and good luck!
Watched a few videos and so far your the only one that checked for a leak. Much appreciated that advice. Thank you.
Very welcome!
Great explanations about installing the flange and checking for a leak 1ST before using silicone to adhere it to the wall.
great video with all the details and no annoying filler, thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
thank you for being detailed on what starting position the shower arm should be in to hopefully end up in the correct position when hand tightened.
Thank you for your quick reply! SO APPRECIATED!! We will definitely try blowing air through both ends. Great idea. It's so nice when pros are willing to share their expertise with us who have no clue! We'll get this eventually!
I really thought I would have to pay someone to do this, now I feel like I can totally do it and rock it! thank you!
You can do it! Good luck.
Exactly what I needed to know. Thank you, for being straight forward and upfront in the video on how too and what too look out for. This is exactly what type of video I was looking for and very short and simple instructions.
+Michelle Dx
Very kind, thank you.
Your very welcome
I appreciate the moderate pace, the lack of background noise/music, and the practical tips (like why I need a flashlight). Also, the tip of using rubbing alcohol to clean the area where something will be adhered. I just subscribed to your UA-cam channel. Thanks for doing these videos. A senior citizen female fan.

Thanks Zoe, you just made my whole day!

And guess what!?? I ran into a
snag immediately. I cannot loosen the
shower extension arm from the pipe inside the wall. Looks like I won’t be changing out my new
shower after all. And I’m really happy
to know you enjoyed my comment and it made you feel good.

The shower arm should thread into a 1/2" female adapter. Have you tried some WD-40 on the threads and pliers to remove the shower arm?
This makes things crystal clear! Thank you
I never understood not having hand held showers. So much easier and for cleaning I need it. But I obviously see expensive fixtures in homes, just the head. Guess hand held looks too ghetto in mansions..lol. I guess cleaning is my biggest gripe. Just so used to hand held can't imagine being without. Great vid! Very simple.
Thanks for commenting.
Thanks Kelly for leaving a comment.
After blowing out I would also flush the valve body, before reinstalling the cartridge, with water to make sure there are no pieces of debris hanging up in the valve body. Then flush the pipe to the shower head before reinstalling the head. You'll know if what you did worked by the amount of water that comes out of the pipe to the shower head.
Had no idea this was so easy in most instances. Thanks!
Thanks Joshua for watching.
You saved Christmas.
Thanks Rob.
I'll be doing this over the weekend for my elderly mom so this was an incredibly helpful video! Thanks so much! I've subscribed and definitely liked the video to help you out and I will more than likely be making use of more of your wonderful videos! Thanks again!
Good luck and thanks for subscribing.
Great video -- clear, concise, and very helpful. Thanks for posting!
Thanks, I appreciate the feedback.
Very good video. It's simple and straight forward.
Thanks for the feedback.
Thanks for watching.
It is better if you cap the pipe to test for leaks in my opinion. You will have more back pressure. With the method shown it could take longer for any leak to make its way through the threads to be noticeable, not to mention a waste of water. It is also a good idea to run the water before you attach the head to purge any sediment/debris.
After searching over 80 or so sites for "polybutylene shower connection", your;s was the closet to my situation.
I'm going to have to rip out the wall in my bedroom to see why my old extension arm just spins and won't come off.
Thanks!
Very straightforward and useful. Thanks very much!
+Jamie Nelson
Thanks Jamie.
Thank you for your expertice on simple home repair very helpful and video very nice presentation instruction wise
Thanks, I appreciate the feedback.
Very helpful, thank you. I just hope I can get my old shower arm off, which has probably been installed since 1954!
Might want to soak the threads with something like WD-40 before removing.
Thanks, will try that!
Steven Meyer
Good luck.
Were u able to take it off?
thanks, will try that today
you prolly dont care but if you are stoned like me during the covid times you can stream pretty much all of the latest series on Instaflixxer. I've been streaming with my girlfriend for the last months =)
@Nickolas Cassius yea, have been using InstaFlixxer for since november myself =)
I use plumber putty to hold the flange. Easy to clean and troubleshoot since I am a maintenance tech I do this everyday.
Great job to the point; yet detailed
Wow that was a cool brass craft shower head
Thanks! I am hesitant to screw around with this myself because the connection pipe in the wall seems so far back. I feel sure it hasn't been replaced in years and guess I will just have to get step stool to look inside at what I am dealing with before I begin
Very clear instructions. Thank you very much.
That is exactly what I needed to see. Thank you so much.
Thanks for the feedback.
Thanks.
Thanks for this video. It looks like the utility knife trick might work.
Thanks Bob for watching.
Water through the handle? On my shower there is a pipe that runs from the valve body to the shower head. The valve body mixes the hot and cold water then delivers it to the shower head via the pipe. You should have something similar to this. Is your shower a shower only or is there a diverter spout involved with a tub?
Your info was great. I would have missed two steps in your tips and it would have later been a problem. Thanks!
Thanks Thomas for watching.
Thanks a lot for this vid! I had no idea it was this easy! I will be doing my own install instead of calling a professional.
Good luck. Let me know how the installation goes for you.
iScaper1 Hey um I hve an Exquisete Shower it has one of those removable shower heads but when I was taking a shower it came out of the wall, like I think a small part of the pipe too but I dont think it has ever happend
Shroude Valdona
Usually the shower arm connects to a 1/2" female adapter in the wall. Hopefully your shower arm didn't break off inside that fitting. I would check that first.
I dont think you understand.....its a handheld shower...my mom uses it to clean the shower, so when she turned it on, the whole thing came out of the wall and hit her and the main water came out of the hole in the wall the head, arm and flange are fine but the whole fucking thing came out of the wall v.v
Shroude Valdona
I watched your video. If what you're describing in the video is correct it sounds like the female adapter in the wall has broken off the pipe from the shower valve. If that's the case it's probably time to call a plumber.
Wasn't crazy about the way you attached the flange to the wall with the caulk on the outside like that. I think it looks better to use clear caulk and apply it inside around the arm and under the flange so it doesn't show on the outside. It holds just as well and looks a little neater. Otherwise, nice install.
Good tip, I'll use your method the next time I do the replacement.
Might have to try a pipe wrench. Careful you don't break the arm threads off in the fitting.
Sounds like there may be some kind of obstruction between the valve body and the shower head in the piping. You might have to remove the cartridge and try some compressed air to blow out that section of pipe. You might have to blow both ways, from the shower head back to the cartridge and from the valve body up to the shower head. Remember to remove the shower head also. Let me know what you find.
TY!! a girl need to know this .
+TheJazzie6
Thanks.
Yes, I remembered those things from your video. I didn't have WD40 so tried 3 in 1. As for pliers, I used every conceivable kind. Either I lack the necessary strength or it was "over installed". The installer has done other work here and he has gone overboard before. It feels like he used "cement" to join male and female pipes! Absolutely no give.
+Zoe Z.
Might want to buy a pipe wrench. It will give you more leverage. Hopefully you won't break off the threads of the shower arm in the fitting.
So we are dunces! We had a flash of brilliance and realized we needed to PULL OUT to test the handle, not just turn side to side!! So thanks to your great video the cartridge and handle are replaced and now water is running out of the shower head. BUT NOT MUCH. Major downer. We removed the shower head and still the water was just trickling out. The water goes from hot to cold fine. Ideas on how to fix this? Is it water pressure? A clog from the handle to the shower? Some bigger issue? Thanks!
That's the trick, to tighten it enough that the curve is pointing down and that it doesn't leak where the nipple connects to the female fitting in the wall.
We love all your videos! We were able to replace the handle and cartridge on our single handle Moen shower. Happy day! But it didn't solve our problem---no water coming from shower head. Not a drop. There isn't a seperate shut off valve to the shower. The toilet and sink work fine. What we could see of the valve and pipes from where we replaced the cartridge look good. A little water did come out when we pulled out the old cartridge. ANY IDEAS for what to try next?! Thank you!
That was very helpful, thank you!
Intense video man, keep it up👍🏽
Very neat job 👍
Thanks!
Thank you
Amazing explanation
Excelent video. Thanks for uploading
Thanks for watching.
Very detailed. Thank you.
Thanks Michael.
no matter how hard I try, the head or arm will not come off. Tried wd40 and turning as hard as physically possible but it won't move. ridiculous
snaresallday I had same problem which is caused by rust built up over years. So called a plumber to take some part of the wall to cut the pipe the install a new pipe and shower head .... all that should cost somewhere around 600+ but you can save up on installing the wall your self which should cost you somewhere around 350$ + wall material 80$~
GL
I have a shower on my ceiling its call a rain shower its cool and I have a shower spray hose its silver
Great . You made it easy. Thank u
+Human angel
Thanks, I appreciate the feedback.
i dont know if you can help me but on my shower all the water comes through the handle...when i unscrew it there is a big hole as though a fitting is supposed to be there, can you help me??
The shower panels are beige with light brown patterns, is that what you mean?
How tight should the extension arm be? I'm afraid to over-tighten it and crack the pipe behind the wall.
Thanks for posting this
What if, after you tighten it, it's not pointing down like it should be? Thanks!!!
I saw him wrap the Teflon tape clockwise, which is correct.
Thanks for the great video... Since you're just replacing the shower arm and head, I'm assuming you don't have to turn off the water valve to do that? As long as the handles are in the turned off position, you can change it out. Is that correct?
Thanks in advance.
That is correct. Even if you turn on the water by accident the water will come out of the spout as long as the diverter is not closed.
Great video! Very easy to follow with clear instructions. However, I have a question: Can you install a 12-17 inch shower arm and then your shower head? Are they all standard size?
I've seen longer shower arms that come straight out of the wall instead of angling down, so I don't see why not.
iScaper1 Thank you!
you are so perfect, thank you
Hi, awesome video! I had to replace my shower arm as over the years it corroded and eventually broke off with the arm thread stuck in the brass pipe bushing. Luckily for me I could remove the pipe bushing and reinstalled all of it and then the arm ended up pointing sideways. I solved this by giving the pipe busing 3/4 turn and everything was straight and leak-proof(pray i did not crack the elbow in the wall). My question is could I have just not removed the sideways arm and then inserted one of those rubber-like washers and then retightened?
If you mean like a hose washer for hose fittings I don't think so. I don't think the female fitting in the wall would accept a rubber washer.
Had trouble using the GE all purpose calk. Wouldn't harden right away lol. Had to sit there holding the plate for like 10 min
Very helpful. Thanks
awesome video very helpful
I don't understand why they don't make gaskets for the shower flange and the handle and faucet escutcheons. It is hard to caulk these because of the thin edge on all of these parts.
Good video
lol who measured the cut out for that... it is a lil off center.
I have water dripping from the shower arm and down my wall I hope this helps
Sounds like the cartridge in the valve body isn't shutting all the way off.
very good, but you only caulked the outer rim of the shower flange.
any advise for replacing a 40 year old shower arm? I anticipate it may be seized.
SOOOOO, is this as easy as you make it look???? and if I just need to repair a leak behind the flange, do I need to buy new parts or can I just uninstall, use my teflon tape and reinstall what I already have? In case you didn't guess, I'm not handy, also do I need to turn the water off to do this or just have the shower off?
If it's leaking out of the threads on the extension that connect to the fitting in the wall you could try teflon tape and reinstall. If the fitting is leaking you have bigger problems. You don't need to turn the water off if the shower valve is off.
You sure that was silicone caulk you were putting on there and not latex caulk?
thanks
Its funny how everybody that do these videos never have any leaks after
MY showerhead was frozen....i found a.strong rod, drilled holes through pipe near threads close to wall fitting. Inserted rod through holes and tapped with wrench until loose and then twisted off with rod. Only solution.
Creative solution, thanks for posting.
Did u need to shutoff water in the whole house?
Was this in a mobile home or a house? Do it matter?
Doesn't matter as long as the fitting in the wall is 1/2" IPS (Iron Pipe Size) female threads.
Did you need to turn off the main water in the whole house to replace it?
No, but be careful you don't bump the shower valve when replacing or you will get a bath.
there's no trick, if it get's too tight on the final turn you end up with the thing pointing sideways. If you leave it pointing down it will leak. It's just the way the threads line up.
Good video, how can you replace the pipe behind the shower wall, the vertical pipe? With the shower arm off if I take vertical pipe lose where it connects down lower will the vertical pipe come out below?
Is there a video?
Do you have a leak in the piping to the shower head? If not I wouldn't try and change it because you may have to cut the sheet rock in the wall behind the shower valve to change the supply piping to the shower head, or if you don't have a wall behind the shower you would have to cut the shower wall to access the piping.
iScaper1 There is a leak behind wall,in the vertical pipe feeding shower head.
Robert Dawson
Looks like you have a bigger project on your hands now.
If the sprinkle part came off how to do you put that part back on
If you mean the shower head, it threads onto the shower arm.
Do i need a tool to remove the shower head only? water pressure is low and i was trying to clean them up..try to unscrew them but they aren't coming off...Is there are way to clean the shower head without removing it....
+Mae Cedillo
Some shower heads have a couple of flat spots on the back of the head where you can use a wrench to break it loose. If not, a pair of pliers should work. To clean the shower head the easiest way is to remove it and let it soak in some white vinegar or CLR for a few minutes then brush clean.
FYI You put your Teflon tape on backwards. But I got what i needed out of the video. I didn't know what the flange was called. I always incorrectly called it a concealing plate.
Backwards? Looks correct to me....
my shower arm it sprays out water off from the sides inside of shower arm opening..how to fix?theres a hex typ thingy,i unloosen that?maybe a bad seal inside that?
I would try teflon tape on the male threads of the shower arm that thread into the female fitting.
How do I remove a part that I can't budge due to age of the tape/connection? I have tried bpblaster (the strong version according to my local hardware store). What other products can you recommend?
+deh jax
I've had good luck with WD-40.
When I remove the shower head I don't have any leaks,I replaced the shower head and the shower arm is still leaking,do you know what may be causing this
The shower head builds pressure back along the arm and is probably why you're seeing leaks. Did you use thread tape where the arm goes into the fitting? If so, I would try to tighten the arm another turn.
how do i remove the screw inside the wall??? ..it is striped
wont allow me to insert shower arm
good stuff yo
I twist and twist but the shower arm doesnt come off'
is there another way they are attached behind the wall?
Can you pull the flange/escutcheon plate forward and take a look with a flashlight where the shower arm connects to the fitting? It should be a female adapter and the shower arm should thread out counter clockwise. Hopefully the threads aren't stripped and it's spinning in place.
iScaper1 hi thanx for the reply
I finally got the shower head off, I had to hold the plate and twist the opposite direction.
apparently this is called a Self Seal Tub Spout & Shower Arm Trim Plates, there is a plastic stopper inside around the wall pipe. I dont know if someone did this on purpose or broke something and did this as a remedy.
potatochobit ok the official product is called sioux chief tomahawk Shower WallNut lowes or ace hardware do not carry this, I want to strangle myself now, lol
potatochobit
Just watched the Tomahawk video here: ua-cam.com/video/K4tJAyAtFIw/v-deo.html
Looks like the Tomahawk moves the shower arm connection from the inside of the wall to the outside of the shower wall. You may have to call a plumbing supply company to find Sioux Chief replacement parts for your shower.
My shower arm is in there REALLY tight. Any tips?
+colleen pierce
I would try a pipe wrench and hopefully you won't break off the threads in the fitting.
First step is turn the water mains off.
Do you have to turn off the water first??
No. Just make sure the shower valve stays off.
iScaper1 ohh ok....thanks alott my man:)))
our shower arm broke off how do we fix that
If it broke off in the fitting you could try an EZ out extractor. I would try soaking the threads with WD40 first.
My hd shower head took 8 loops around cause it kept leaking. 😖😖. I have been doing this for years.
