Henry Armstrong - Was an American professional boxer and a world boxing champion. Armstrong was one of the few fighters to win in three or more different divisions: Featherweight, Lightweight, and Welterweight. He defended his Welterweight title a total of nineteen times. The Ring magazine named him Fighter of the Year in 1937. The Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) named him Fighter of the Year in 1940. He is currently ranked by BoxRec as the 12th-greatest pound-for-pound fighter of all time. In 2007, The Ring ranked Armstrong as the second-greatest fighter of the last 80 years. Boxing coach and commentator Teddy Atlas considers Armstrong to be the greatest of all time. Historian Bert Sugar also ranked Armstrong as the second-greatest fighter of all time. In 1945, Armstrong retired from boxing. His official record was 152 wins, 21 losses and 9 draws, with 101 knockout wins.

Held the featherweight, lightweight, and welterweight titles simultaneously... and fought at middleweight. Quite possibly the greatest fighter of all time!
And that was when there were only eight division with one belt a piece. He was the best in almost half the divisions. Plus he would have had the middleweight belt as well if not for a draw with the champ. I don't think there will ever be a fighter that could pull that off again.

Correction. He "Fought a Middleweight",Ceferino Garcia,who himself would've been a Junior Middleweight in todays world of boxing. When they fought in 1940,Garcia weighed 153(MW back then was 148-160),while Armstrong weighed in at 142 for that bout.

Yeah I was a little disappointed with that. I thought he would be more dynamic, but his rigid style of wearing down opponents is not much different than Joe Frazier. That style would be vulnerable to an opponent that fights like the powerful George Foreman who chopped Frazier down in the early rounds or Muhammad Ali who won several wars of attrition with Joe.
Sorry but you’re wrong, it may look like he fight like Frazier but Frazier was never that busy with his punches, he bobbed and weaved and that gave him the illusion that he was doing more than he actually was ( I LOVE FRAZIER BTW) Armstrong on the other hand is relentless at all times

Armstrong was a completely dynamic fighter. The way he used his entire body as both offensive and defensive tools is unmatched in boxing history. There aren't any modern fighters who can use their head and shoulders to manipulate their opponent the same way Armstrong did. It was completely dynamic and utterly amazing. He would be equally effective today as he was back then because of his uniquely dynamic abilities.

I like how he uses everything shoulder, head, forearms, elbows to push off and block opponents vision and give himself just enough space to sneak in a shot or two (with the same hand even).

From watching this video, I didn't realize how slow and rigid he was. He uses that methodical head first crouching crab like style that Joe Frazier is famous for. I think Manny Pacquaio is a more dynamic pressure fighter than Henry Armstrong using angles and different styles with more head and foot movement. Because of this I actually think Pacquaio is the greatest pressure fighter of all time winning 8 championship titles in 8 different weight divisions.

These guys were doing it before the lights, the fame, the money. Well at least it compared to now. These legends had it in their blood. fighters, warriors, gladiators. Respect these legends so much.
Very unique style. He was a very skilled brawler. Never took a step backwards, came forward and threw a lot of punches but was calculated with it. Not just throwing wilds shots like many fighters do today.
And hard to hit wait excellent head movement.

You called it. A Brawler NOT A BOXER. Brawler’s don’t beat boxers in a boxing ring. Head down and hands down would get him ate up by a boxer. Imagine a good quick jab with sharp straight punches and good footwork he would be dominated.
He simply didn't run out of gas. He wore down bigger and stronger men.
Exactly he doesn't look that dynamic. He basically uses that relentless crowding style moving forward and wearing down opponents.

A pugilist at his highest level. The man was awesome at it all. A technique VERY few could manage during his era or to this day.
Him and Aaron Pryor had a similar style non stop punching wearing their opponents down. I don't know how big his punch was but he was relentless and non stop. Like Smokin Joe and Tyson a true blue warrior of the highest quality. It's not easy to win a titles in one weight divisions much less holding three simultaneously that's extraordinary. RIP hammering Hank and I hope that your legacy last forever.

Homicide Hank was the closest thing to perfection considering the blending of swarming, crowding, and inside fighting (3 types of tactics under the umbrella of pressure in-fighting).

I see some similaritys with Joe Frazier, both coming forward like a tank with heavy left hooks to the body and head. Both fighters always bobing and weaving like a waterball on a weavy ocean. Cross defense! In my opinion Armstromg is using more his right hand then Frazier does. However great scenes! I enjoyed it! Thank you! Keep up the work! Support from Germany!

True but P4p. The accolades just don’t lie. It’s like p4p was made for fighters like him manny pacquiao, James Toney, and Roy Jones. Fighters that can fight at any weight and win. Even moving up 40plus pounds. Not to mention Roberto Duran as well also can fight at any weight

@@irishscience580 The level of a fighter isn't determined by the number of matches he had. Langford wouldn't last a single round against the kinds of Ali. I would even say he wouldn't have any chance against every great boxer who came after Dempsey
Brilliant video. Although he's ranked really highly on p4p lists I think many still under-estimate him in one on one fantasy fights. Just watching that highlight real shows you what an absolute nightmare he was for just about anybody in the history of boxing from featherweight up to welterweight. I definitely wouldn't bet against him, not against Pep, Ray Leonard, Sal Sanchez or anybody else for that matter.

I had a different impression. I was impressed by his record as an all time great, but after watching several of his videos, I kind of thought he looked kind of one dimensional, applying the headfirst swarming style to wear down opponents. I think he would lose to more dynamic all time greats from different eras.
@@christopherknight3942 Armstrong was pretty one sided in his tactics, for him there was only way to fight and that was moving forward. There was a lot of subtle technique in his work though, such as the way his lowered head position not only made him a harder target for straight punches at long range, it also allowed him to push his head into his opponents chest when up close to both smother punches and momentarily destroy their stance.
Also, Armstrong was pretty dynamic in his own way. His modus operandi was moving forward, but he wasn't easy to hit most of the time due to his constant head movement and smothering up close.
Talking about mythical matchups between atg's, I'd favor Armstrong against some but not all (Especially in the welterweight division, since he was such a small guy that I'd pick a lot of other boxers to beat him due to size alone)
Did you guys know that Armstrong was born with a heart larger than the average person like literally 3rd larger or something like that. That explains why he never went outta gas always has tremendous stamina
@@christopherknight3942 he had great head movement to complement his forward moving style. Armstrong may be one dimensional in his approach but it's the best anyone has ever managed in the inside fighting realm which is a truly dominant one if mastered.

Damm Henry Armstrong was so relentless he reminds me so much of bujack so relentless, like a shark swarming upon it's prey, love watching the old school fighters go at it, this is boxing at its finest none of this political who has the most money nonsense like today.
He's like,
'This is Boxing, Let's fight.'
'Punch me, because I'm going to punch you until you can't punch me anymore.'
And then you had to battle for your life, because he's going to TRADE blows until you're down.
Actually, he was very difficult to hit flush. It was part of his genius. He was right in front of you, but you couldn't hit him flush. Imagine the fear his opponents felt.. It's hard to hit someone in the face whose head seems almost glued to your chest right? Part of his magic was that he was always able to land clean against his opponents. A true practitioner of the art of hitting and not to be hit.

I see a LOT of similarities to Roberto Duran, I wonder if Roberto or Arcel used him as a model? Of the 2 I believe Duran to be just a touch better and probably a harder puncher but boy talk about a dream matchup in their primes at 135!

@@surveying482 You seem to forget that the only reason Armstrong fought SRR was because he was broke and Robinson gave him the fight just to help him out because he was one of his idols. He had already 130 fights under his belt and only fought on because of money trouble, so to mention that SRR beat Armstrong is close to meaningless. It's not just who you beat, but when you beat them. Had SRR fought Armstrong in his prime, everyone agrees, the fight would have been close, and the outcome might turn on what weight class the fight was at.
And none of the fighters you mentioned, Leonard, Hearns, Mayweather, or Whitaker, would have been able to beat Armstrong at 126, not even close. I'm not sure if any of them even fought at 126 as professionals. So it's not as simple as you put it.
Also, what fighters dealt him a lot of damage at featherweight and lightweight?

Dont know what clip you are talking about, but it might be Barney Ross, whom Henry won the welterweight title. He was a tremendous fighter and it is said Armstrong carried him in their fight
