  • Here's how I tie the GT knot for fishing.
This is NOT the slim beauty. Click here for a slim beauty: www.fishnet.com.au/library/kno...
Notice the line is simply doubled (not a bimini) and the braid wraps around the mono (rather than the mono threading the braid) and that you cut the braid tags off on the slim beauty.
The knot is used for joining monofilament line (nylon or fluorocarbon) to a braid main line. The knot requires a bimini twist in the mainline to create a loop.
The knot is very strong (stronger than the bimini, which if well tied can be 90%+ of the line strength), is relatively easy to tie (compared to knots such as the FG or PR knot) and cast well as the tag faces up the line (but not quite as well for heavy leaders as the significantly longer and trickier PR and FG knots).
Note: bimini's can be tied a lot easier if you put the loop over a reel handle and take out the slack as it will give you two hands to work with with forming the turns. (see other videos on youtube).
The knot may take a little bit longer to tie than other knots, but is significantly stronger, and should last many trips before you have to retie. It can be tied in lines as light as 4lb, where it forms a very reliable high strength knot. With care, the knot can be cut without damaging the bimini. Remember, a strong knot will break less often, so retieing lines will happen less often.
One trick is to use the same leader as your braid (be wary actual breaking strains may vary from the pack). With the right knot (a 6 turn uni), the leader should snap at the lure or hook should you get snagged and need to snap off your line (leaving you with only a single terminal knot to try).
So get out there and practice it.

This is a great knot for replacing the leader when it starts getting short. You just cut the leader from the leader end as close to the braid without nicking it or anything and then pull the end of the braid off. This will allow you to pull the old leader knot off and then reuse the braid loop again. The only issue is that you must ensure the tip guide is big enough for this type of knot to travel through easily or it will get the insert punched out after a while.

Always good to have a new knot to learn and master. Thanx mate

I see your point. I have a lot to comment on but the basic facts are if you are confident in it then definitely stick with it. But if the day arises that one wants more than just try something new.
As far as FG/GT , who knows. I know many knots have many names (as well as many people renaming them to get credit for them even though they did not invent them) I tweaked the FG/GT knot yet wanted the name the same. Poor technique is an issue, but then again teaching an avg person (continued to pt2)

When I'm tightening the knot, it's very difficult to smooth the bimini loop. One end of the braid tightens and the loop end stays a bit loose no matter how well lubricated or how much I smooth the loop. It also seems to take ALOT of pressure to tighten it.

looks a good Knot, but try the Crazy tail twisted leader with Modified cats Paw. Unbelievable knot strength and a great knot for casting through runners. Knot so bulky and smooth knots. Have used heaps with no failures ever for GT and dogtooth tuna fishingCheers Greg

(Part 2) teaching the avg person a bimini is no small feat either. People are intimidated by it and have issues grasping it do type some fear of the unknown, from my experience.
As far as knot strength I have to thank you for pointing out the flaw in the way I worded that. I meant it in a way of overall break percentage. That being the case I lowballed it at twice the strength. The knot I use is stronger than the lines themselves in a slow pull but I didnt want to (ok just a little left...cont)

(Part 3....last part I swear lol) I didnt want to "crap" on the ideas and beliefs of someone who refuses to try something new. Not so much you but the viewers. The fear of change in a persons fishing techniques is often a powerful one that is only sated by someone with a name for themselves. (i.e. Bill Dance, Jose Wejebe, etc).
Thanks for pointing this out....now hop on the bandwagon and start calling the Albright knot the Alberto knot hahahaaha (That just kills me.)

They laughed when I told them I would bulk up with "Atomic Max Muscle", but then they saw the results. Do a search on Google for Atomic Max Muscle to see their reaction.
