The Andrew Sisters - Bei Mir Bist Du Shein

- Опубліковано 15 тра 2008
- This comical video presentation by Spadecaller accompaines the Yiddush song originally composed by lyricist Jacob Jacobs and Sholom Secunda in 1932. In 1937, Sammy Cahn heard a performance of the song, sung in Yiddish by African American performers Johnnie and George at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, and on seeing the response, got his employer to buy the rights so he (together with Saul Chaplin) could rewrite the song with English language lyrics. He then convinced The Andrews Sisters to perform the song (recorded November 24, 1937), and it became a major hit.
When I was a kid around 8 or10 years old (I'm 59 now), I always thought they were saying, "A beer, Mr. Shane". lol.
Bradat26 I first heard this song about 5 years ago (I'm 26)...thought it was "My dear Mr. Shane".
typacsk I can see that, too.
+typacsk I heard this so g about 5 minutes ago (I'm 16)
"Bei mir bist du schoen." It means "To me, you are beautiful."

Lyrics
Of all the boys I've known, and I've known some
Until I first met you, I was lonesome
And when you came in sight, dear, my heart grew light
And this old world seemed new to me
You're really swell, I have to admit you
Deserve expressions that really fit you
And so I've racked my brain, hoping to explain
All the things that you do to me
Bei mir bist do schön, please let me explain
Bei mir bist do schön means you're grand
Bei mir bist do schön, again I'll explain
It means you're the fairest in the land
I could say Bella, bella, even sehr wünderbar
Each language only helps me tell you how grand you are
I've tried to explain, bei mir bist do schön
So kiss me and say you understand
Bei mir bist do schön, you've heard it all before
but let me try to explain
Bei mir bist do schön means that you're grand
Bei mir bist do schön, it's such an old refrain
and yet I should explain
It means I am begging for your hand
I could say bella, bella, even sehr wünderbar
Each language only helps me tell you how grand you are
I could say bella, bella, even sehr wünderbar
Each language only helps me tell you how grand you are
I've tried to explain, bei mir bist do schön
So kiss me and say that you will understand
Thanks alot ❤️

The song was written in 1932 by Jacob Jacobs and Sholom Secunda. It became popular outside of Jewish circles with its English version named as an English transcription of the Yiddish name - "Bei Mir Bistu Shein".
It was a big hit in Nazi Germany under a germanised name - "Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen". After its Jewish origins were discovered, however, the song was promptly banned by the government.
The song was so popular in Germany that the USSR made a parody titled - "Baron Fon Der Pshik", with anti-Nazi lyrics.
Daniel Tinkov Really!! That's so interesting!! Makes total sense, though!
Thank you for your explanation!!
I grew up with this song, thanks to my grannie and mom (we're Dutch, my grandparents fought in the resistance during the Shoah).
@@prinsespluis hey, Angela, I'm glad I helped! My grandparents also fought in the resistance during the war. I'm happy that these pieces of history can be preserved.
I already knew of its Ashkenazi origins as the title was usually written with the Yiddish transliterations and not in High German but didn't know the Nazis loved it till they found out about it being the amazing artwork of Jewish talent. Nor much less would I guess that it had actually been composed in the early thirties! Todah/danke scheyn for the lovely info! Tovah 2023!
@@joalexsg9741 pleasure is all mine ☺! It is interesting that the song kept on living after the war in both the US & the USSR. A new Soviet version was composed by Jewish-Soviet composer Pavel Gandelman which became iconic in Soviet urban circles. This is especially interesting because the English original was based on a part of an operetta written by a Jewish-Russian emigre in the United States that moved there to escape the pogroms in the Russian Empire.

Paying my respects to Ms. Patty. RIP Andrews Sisters. Their music was part of my childhood, as my dad was a WWII vet (I'm in my mid-40s).

So am I from that video
At first I thought it was "MY DEAR MISTER SHANE". lol.
"Bei mir bist du schoen." It means "To me, you are beautiful."
But to say its not really correct. Its said "FÜR MICH bist du schön" But anyway, great Song.
The title started as Yiddish, "Bei Mir Bistu Shein", and there have been some variations. This mainly English version shifted slightly to match the English rhymes, it was originally all-Yiddish. Because of the different script, there's always a bit of wobble around transliteration.
trust me your not the only one who thought that
Hey whats up you guys yes
A favorite song from my childhood. I didn't speak German, so interpreted the words to say "My Dear Mr. Shane".....who was a detective played by the great Lloyd Nolan: Michael Shane, Private Eye. Thanks so very much for the reminder!

I’m 45, I was raised by Jewish grandparents! I woke up with this song in my head about 6 months ago when I was residing them, caring for my pop who had dementia…. But when he heard me singing that- he was laughing! He couldn’t believe I remembered the words. We lost him in November, and he may have been tough as nails. But at family functions ppl couldn’t wait for him and my one aunt to always jitterbug! The both of them were extra good!!! My grandmother never learned! But everyone enjoyed the show! And they did put on a show! Flips spins! I can’t even remember the first time I saw it! I just remember it but I can remember other peoples faces the first time they saw how good they were.
RIP Grandfather- You were way more than that, it’s just a label. You fulfilled the role of a dad in every other way. And a part of me will always be with you and my mother. I do feel better knowing you’re no longer suffering, and knowing you are with your daughter (my mom) again. I’ve had Yiddish swing in my head again all day! So I finally broke and turned it on! Maybe you wanted to hear it! I’ll play it on a loop while I’m cleaning the yard. There’s so much I wish I could tell that’s changed. 😞
Love it! Im a 67 y o grandma and fhis js my jam!!
Wish we had more of this music today!
A truly great performance by the greatest vocal group. Such quality singers.
Patty Andrews was a really nice lady. My husband helped her get solo gigs in her later years and would send her flowers on her birthday and one day I answered the phone and there she was thanking us profusely!!!

Don't get me wrong, it's totally fine if you prefer this version rather than Rebecca's (Let Me Explain Studios), but saying that it's trash just because it's modern is stupid.

Who came here from just liking good old songs?
the original Song was called "Bay mir bistu sheyn" and it was composed for a yiddish musical in 1933. "Bay mir bistu sheyn" means something like "You're beautifull to me" or "I think you're beautifull".
A few years later it was rearranged for a english version - with new english lyrics.
As a German , I was confused about the lyrics cause in standart german "Bei mir bist du schön" would mean something like: When you are with me (or at my place) you're beautifull.
ua-cam.com/video/ZUVEq6NC7mM/v-deo.html
I think your Yiddish spelling is way off, but although the English words are written with German spellings, the pronunciation of “Shane” for beautiful is Yiddish. Your problem is that you ignore the importance of the word order. By putting the “with (or at) me as the first word, it gets emphasis. “With me, you are beautiful.” The emphasis is on the singers (with me) protestation of the object of affections beauty. But it is really just a ditty. You can rest assured Sammy Cahn’s lyrics are grammatically correct, albeit with nuance and care taken on what phase get musical emphasis.
Of course you won’t see my reply after 11years.
"Cohen's an 'artist' says some. He's a section 8 says I."
Section 8 is an term used for discharge of the mentally unfit in the US military. Guess that line kind of acts as foreshadowing.
The great the mighty sander Cohen
@@teddiabetes1482 I always thought he meant section 8 housing lmao
@@laurenceharper2037 It's a pretty specific reference to the US military so I don't blame you lol. Now that I think about it, that line implies that Fontaine was in the US military at some point, given how casually he delivers it. Obviously not something an actual Irishman would say, in that it's foreshadowing. Feel like I didn't clarify why it's foreshadowing in the first comment

+Jeff Benedict Unlike, say Manhattan Transfer. Tonya Pinkins, Idina Menzel, Christine Ebersole, or Elaine Stritch, Kristin Chenoweth, Audra McDonald, Bernadette Peters, or Patti LuPone, to name a few?
+Locke Lamora Interesting observation.
+Jeff Benedict what do you mean, chris brown sings just fine.
+Jeff Benedict In the 1930s, some people a bit like yourself who were hearing this kind of songs used to say exactly the same thing, referring to singers from the 19th century ! And so on...
+Eliezer Pennywhistler And how many of them are the "popular' music today? I totally agree they are amazing and if you're of the musical theatre type, you know them. But I do have to agree with Jeff. So much popular music now- no matter if the singer has talent or not- is autotune.
this should be in Fallout
Late as fuck for this comment, but in a way it actually is. If you have the fallout 4 mod "Old world radio - Boston", this is played on the station "Radio FNGS". I have been playing a lot of fallout 4 lately, so this song has really been stuck in my head.
