I love the simplicity of the lyrics in this, which suits a straightforward message. Aesop is known for dense, cryptic lyrics and this song is a beautiful outlier in his catalogue.

Fantastic that you’ve been exposed to Aes. He is truly one of a kind. He has an incredible unique way of storytelling and manipulating words and sounds. This song is definitely a lot more digestible that a lot of his work. Once you get into the more complex stuff your mind might be blown.

I love Aes! Saw him live a couple years ago and he was incredible. I was not really a fan of rap until I found him. He does have some other straight forward story telling songs like this, some are really deep and cloaked in layers of metaphors, and others are just silly. I would suggest reacting to "Rings," " Kirby," and "None Shall Pass" to mix it up a bit.

I think that second gentlemen in a photo was Jeremy fish I believe. And his artwork he’s done for Aesop.
As per the lyric book Aesop Rock released a full book of all his lyrics at one point.
Thanks for reacting man! Love your thoughts. It’s a bit of a difficult track for a first listen, I went down a rabbit hole with Aesop. But I wanna see you react to Walking In The Snow - Run The Jewels. Later

What's the book called? Been an Aes fan since about 13-14 and now studying an English literature masters degree at 22 and cite him as one of my main influences for getting into literature. Especially poetry which I now write myself as well as study. Is it "the Poetry of Aesop Rock"? which is one that comes up with a cursory google search or something else? Never heard of a physical book and would love to own an actual copy of some of this amazing poetry.

    • @MaceAroundTheWorld

@@stevesmith5883 I dont think it's readily available in physical or digital form. I think it was included in a special vinyl release, but thats my guess. I read about it somewhere and I know it exists. But its very rare. I would love a book including all his lyrics up to and including Spirit World Field Guide.

Ian Matthias Bavitz, better known by his stage name Aesop Rock, is an American hip hop recording artist and producer residing in Portland, Oregon. He was at the forefront of the new wave of underground and alternative hip hop acts that emerged during the late 1990s and early 2000s. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aesop_Rock

I liked the lyrics... i loved the idea of drawing your own reality on the sidewalks, turning it into kind of yellow-brick-road, which leads you to the wizard of OZ... funny.... and i was reminded somehow of the song DAYDREAMER from Aurora... where she tells us to better live up to our dreams... nice...

Watching your facial expressions just zapped me back to being 15 when this album came out. I had AOL dial up internet and one phone line. Every song, every album I accessed was a test and labor of love and patience. Sometimes it would take DAYS. If a download was interrupted by a phone call or whatever it rarely restarted with progress and would start again at the beginning. I cherished each track and moment especially being poor and from Alaska where even if the music had been easily purchasable (it wasn't if it wasn't main stream) I wouldn't have been able to afford it.
Anyway, I know I sound old even though I'm only 36 but it's nice seeing people still experiencing music that was so important to my development :)

I heard him for the first time 6-7 years ago.
some of his other songs are absolutely pieces of masterpiece when it comes to use of words which is also beneficial for me as a non native English speaker so I learn really complex stuff.
It's a mind exercise for me, a few of the songs he has is just straight up listenable.
but definitely it's the use of words, lyrics and meaning which sets aesop apart.

I was the same way, never really caring about the rap genre. Until I started listening to Aesop Rock. His words are all so poetic. It's like deciphering a dream. If you are into deeper messages and poetry I highly suggest listening to more of him. But for sure, to get the full effect, read it once through too. Like you have here with the lyrics on the screen. He has so much packed into each line that may slip by you if only hearing it. But yeah I have a suggestion of a song you could do next, I've broken it down myself and it's absolutely one of my favorites... Awe shit, I said favorites and two popped in my head... Haha. If you want to and have the time id suggest: Big Bang and Oxygen by Aesop Rock.

Great review, great artist. I'd recommend "None Shall Pass" and "Blood Sandwich" as more songs of his to listen to. He's very dense lyrically but when you can take the time to listen and understand his songs, like you did here, you find out what hip-hop can be and it's incredible. Props for taking the time to listen. You made a new fan in me for that!

Glad you enjoyed this - Aes is truly a unique talent in hip-hop and I think that his work is different enough that anyone, particularly those who aren't usually into hip-hop, can thoroughly enjoy it. Before watching the video I had initially thought to simply suggest you check out his newest album, Spirit World Field Guide, as it just came out this week and (personally) I think it's by far his best work yet. However, upon further reflection and after watching through your video I think there's a few other works that you really ought to look at before digging into SWFG. As other people have mentioned Aes's lyrics can be incredibly dense and mysterious - a difficult but enthralling riddle to listen to again and again - and SWFG is in many ways an apotheosis of that ethos. It's a *lot*.
So, rather than hop off the deep end into some truly arcane juju, I think a good place to check out another song would be "Rings." It's from his 2016 album The Impossible Kid which is much more autobiographical and introspective than much of the rest of his body of work, and was produced largely by himself alone in a barn after he felt a need to get out of the city and break old habits. "Rings" in particular has an interesting connection to No Regrets and its tale of the life of a visual artist, as Aes himself originally trained to be a visual artist. "Rings" is a song about... well, I shouldn't say any more as that would spoil the reaction.
I'd highly encourage you to check out the video, and perhaps some of the others from The Impossible Kid ("Kirby" is adorable). He actually did full youtube closed captioning on those as well so you can easily follow along with the lyrics.

Very cool reaction. Most of Aesop's lyrics are more metaphorical and not as straightforward storytelling...definitely one of the most verbose artists out there. Sometimes it's a bit much for first listens but there's so much to unpack. The depth of his lyrics and beats are special. I've been listening to him for 20 years and still pick up on new things in his songs today. Love the reaction and would be thrilled to see some more Aesop!

Ive attached a link to an article about Aesop Rock and how he's the most lyrically diverse writer/poet/author ever...by a lot...its him then wayyy down you get shakespeare etc haha, they guage it on how many unique words the artists uses in the first 10k words written or something like that: www.fastcompany.com/3030119/shakespeare-vs-aesop-rock-a-vocabulary-smackdown
also if you liked this check out two AMAZING aesop rock side projects, one with Prodeucer TOBACCO from 2018 called Malibu Ken and another team up with singer/acoustic guitarist Kimya Dawson (who did the soundtrack for 'Juno' who has the polar opposite voice of Aes' gutteral deep drawl but it works SO well) they call themselves The Uncluded and have just one album sadly, 2015/6's Hokey Fright (check out songs like Boomerang and Eyeball Soup)
This song was actually quoted as my senior year yearbook quote in 2006 haha i used the main one from the end 'Ive never had a dream in my life - cuz a dream is what you wanna do but still havent pursued - i knew what i wanted and did it till it was done - so ive been the dream i wanted to live since day one' - but now as a rapper who's been doing it as my only income for about 5yrs and in total recording/writing for 16+ at 32 yrs old im still tryna live my dream even if it just means having a job i love but barely scrapping by (esp w covid etc)0

The lyrics and storytelling are great, and I enjoyed your reaction (although rap is not my genre either). Would you be willing to react to Tory Amos? I've heard UA-camrs say that many people who like metal, also like her. Do you know her already? She's been around from the 90s, but her latest album came out in 2017. Her early material is great. She performs it so passionately, and she's also very good at telling her personal stories. I would recommend her song "Winter". ua-cam.com/video/KWmETxWM0h0/v-deo.html

BTW, she is a great pianist, and this is a quiet song she sings by the piano. It's not metal. Her music is classified as pop rock, alternative rock, electronic music, and chamber pop (which I'm not familiar with).
