@@magic5596 -First, let me say I love Steve Perry. His nuanced approach to power and soul is unrivaled in his time. But, Schon is not just one of your friends, lol. But, let's indulge your comment about not contributing for a minute. Take Mother, Father, just a great song out of many on Escape. Schon took a piece his Dad, a classical composer, reworked and arranged his composition, it was the other musicians who had some contributions based on their specific instrument, but the underlying structure was created by Schon through his father's original work. The notion that guitarists don't influence composition and the style of a band is pretty ridiculous and just plain wrong. There is enough evidence of that. Schon brings many things to Journey but one of the most important aspects of their sound he brings is dynamics compositionally, while Cain brings elegance. Lastly, why the fuck doesn't Steve Perry's solo stuff sound anything like Journey? Even when he went solo in his prime that stuff doesn't sound like Journey outside of his voice. None of the dynamic composition is there that Schon was responsible for, none of the elegance that Cain brought. But, you can hear all of that in the work with Steve Augieri, including melody that sounds Perry-esque. However it was former manager Herbie Herbert who brought Steve to the band. After the success of the Infinity album, and with a few hit singles, it became evident to everyone that Steve Perry was Journeys meal ticket, and as such is why Aynsley Dunbar was sacked in the fall of 1978, and once Steve Perry Gaines full control of the band, ultimately founding member/bassist Ross Valory and drummer Steve Smith were also canned during the Raised On Radio recording sessions.
