Gregg is my *FIRST* music influence. Abraxas was my first LP when I was 10 yrs old. I was mesmerized by his Hammond B3 playing on that record, and I started taking organ lessons soon after. I've been playing keyboards, organ, synths, and piano since that day, and I'm 62 yrs young. Thanks, Gregg. You changed my life for the better!!
Agreed. Something died when Greg Rollie quit Journey-but it sounds like he made the right choice for himself and his family. He seems happy and healthy-maybe because he said no to the jab
I went to the original Journey at Winterland in S.F. Only the first album was out. It was so incredible. Aynsley Dunbar on drums and Ross Valory were so powerful together and then Neal's guitar 🎸 blazing 🔥 away. Gregg's great voice and organ made it a whole force of nature.
Always loved the way Gregg Rolie acts He is a real down-to-earth guy simply just call it human. Gregg made some really great music with Santana and Journey...
Yes. I got to meet Gregg and he was great to converse with. His solo album Gringo is one of my favorite albums. He also put out some great songs with The Storm. Long live Gregg Rolie!
Have admired him so much since the early Santana days. What an interesting and genuine man. All the best always to him and thank you for the interview.
I totally get, "As you get older, it's all about the hang. If you're playing with people you don't wanna hang with, it's miserable. So I just don't do that." Thank you, Gregg, for putting it into words! I'm living those words as a nurse - applies to any profession. And thank you for your music - I absolutely love it!
Met Greg and My ke Carbello at the Santa Cruz gigs. Down to earth guys. Great music teachers. Big influence on my music ,my teachers. Honor to have met them. SF music Father's!!! Thank you sincerely. God keep watch over all of you. Keep on rockn!!!
Gregg, I was a huge Journey fan in the early days. I still remember the concert poster that I had for decades that described the band as a group of musicians who had all had enough success that they never needed to play again and formed the band purely to do what THEY WANTED TO DO. Love what you did in that band and saw you guys a couple times back in those days! Great to hear about your later career which, I did not know.
Gregg Rolie was one of my first heros, I would have been 11 years old in 69' so when my brother had the first album I was hooked then. Became a new guitar player in 71' but I always had a soft spot for B3 and man could this guy play, and what a voice. Never could get enough of that band. Then the second album. Wow. Fast forward to Journey, and what a band they were. I was a Mahavishnu fan so the birth of fusion of rock and jazz was a great time for me, the first Journey album will always be their best. I'm glad Gregg is still at it. What a treasure.
For me, as a huge E.L.P. fan, before there was Keith Emerson, there was Greg Rolie, his organ playing was so integral to the Santana sound...and, of course, his singing was spot on, from Evil Ways on through Caravanserai.
It's so great discovering his statement about the reason he stopped doing what he had been doing for about 7 years. He's the one who is right about that, among others.
For me Journey took a really hard hit when Greg left. They were still really successful but it wasn’t the same. Greg has an incredible voice and his and Steve’s together had an amazing chemistry…which is what all the great bands have.
When you take into consideration that Gregg Rolie has been involved with two of the biggest and most successful bands in Rock and also had the opportunity to play with Ringo Star and his Allstar Band with a few other giants of rock, he remains quite humble and honest about where he has been , his short comings etc. To be in Ringo Stars Allstar band you absolutely must be talented and you absolutely have to be a good guy and just a regular decent person. That's Gregg Rolie.
Kudos to him also for refusing to take the COVID jab, therefore losing that gig with Ringo. Staying true to your own beliefs in the face of loss of further fame and fortune is quite admirable.
What a brilliant creative keyboard player, fantastic singer and cool dude. Just that Hammond solo in soul sacrifice at Woodstock was mind blowing tasteful and he was just a kid of 22!
I had the great Fortune of stumbling on a Gregg Rolie concert in Petaluma CA, at the Mystic Theater. I think tickets were 15 or 20 dollars, and it was like a Santana /Journey concert combined. It had never occurred to me before, however, become obvious what a huge part of both bands Rolie was.
Great interview Joe. I would just say I found it disruptive and rude how you kept interrupting Gregg. He's just starting to say something we want to hear and you barge in mate! Please consider pacing things a little more. 🙏 Thanks
I loved when Greg and Steve Perry would harmonize on songs such as “Feeling that Way”, such an awesome sound! Greg is such an underrated musician and singer.
As a young drummer in the very early 80s THIS WAS THE BAND i wanted to be in!!! They lost ‘that sound’ when Greg left though. Funny that later I worked with Buddy Miles and Bobby Whitlock along with producer Jim Gaines who all had ties to Santana and Journey. I was VERY fortunate to grow up in Bill Graham country.
It drives me absolutely nuts when an interviewer asks a question and then constantly interrupts with “yep” while the person that they are interviewing is talking.
This guy cut off Gregg when asking about Perry and Gregg was just about to comment on his issue with him and the dude cuts him off - so frustrating not knowing what he was gonna divulge . This guy isn’t a great interviewer but Gregg did open up about a lot despite this .
Fascinating that he plays by ear, and memorizes or creates the songs. I am that way, but I am trying to learn how to read music again, and although I've seen it all and I've heard it all, it's hard to absorb after you've played by ear for so many years. the ear always takes over as soon as I have heard it, and i just run with it. I'm trying to learn how to keep my eyes on the music sheet. Anyways, it is refreshing to hear that somebody of his stature and ability plays by ear also.
