- Top 10 Classic British Sitcoms
Subscribe: ua-cam.com/users/cwatchmojouk?...
The UK has a long history of producing classic comedy, and sitcoms have been popular with audiences for over 50 years. For this list, we'll be counting down the greatest classic sitcoms ever made in Britain. To be in contention, the show must have started before the year 2000. Expect to see Only Fools and Horses, Father Ted, Dad's Army, Are You Being Served? Porridge, Blackadder, Yes Minister, Steptoe and Son, Bottom and Fawlty Towers. From hotels to council flats and three wheel vans, we have it all covered.
Special thanks to our user Kieran Atkins for submitting the idea on our interactive suggestion tool: WatchMojo.com/suggest - Розваги
I agree with Blackadder at #1. Though it did surprise me, I expected Fawlty Towers to take the top spot.
This is my list.
1) only fools and horses
2) blackadder
3) dads army
4) fawlty towers
5) allo allo
6) some mothers do ave em
7) open all hours
8) vicar of Dibley
9) are you being served
10) green green grass
Keeping Up Appearances! This show is still rerunning in many countries throughout Europe
It's also super, super popular in the U.S. Me, I much preferred "Are You Being Served?" and "As Time Goes By".
I'm glad Blackadder, Fawlty Towers and Are You Being Served ? on the list, but where's Monty Python and Red Dwarf?
Monty Python is not a sit-com
Monty python 100% not a sit com 😂
Not even The Goodies which actually caused a bloke from Kings Lynn to literally die laughing
I know it’s been said. But I must reiterate that Monty Python is not a sit com. I’m not sure red dwarf is either tbh but maybe
Yeah, I noticed that certain shows, Monty Python, The Young Ones, Benny Hill, etc, weren't in here, but then I realized that they would be considered sketch comedy or, in the case of the Young Ones, a variety show. But Red Dwarf not being on here is a bit perplexing, thinking about it now.
Surprised "Keeping up Appearances" didn't at least get a nod.... Good list though.
🎯
My favourite classic comedy shows are Don't Wait Up, That's My Boy, Home To Roost, A Fine Romance, George And Mildred, Man About The House, In Sickness and In Health, Open All Hours, The Likely Lads, Only When I Laugh, To The Manor Born, The Good Life, 3 Up 2 Down, Robin's Nest, Mind Your Language, On The Buses, Butterflies, Love Thy Neighbour , Terry and June, Sorry, Last Of The Summer Wine, The Young Ones, Hi De Hi, You Rang M'lord, Oh Doctor Beeching, Surgical Spirit, No Place Like Home, Ever Decreasing Circles, Citizen Smith, Men Behaving Badly, The Vicar of Dibley, Absolutely Fabulous, Fresh Fields, The Liver Birds and many more that are classic comedies that deserve to be reshown on British Television instead of the crude reality shows that are never-ending!
Good lord man...how much TV do you watch?
You are def taking the p*** with that list.
Only Fools And Horses should have been No.1.
Personally my top 3 would be
1. Only Fools and Horses
2. Fawlty Towers
3. Blackadder
My list
10 Til Death Us Do Part
9 Hancock's Half Hour
8 On The Buses
7 One Foot In The Grave
6 Steptoe and Son
5 Blackadder
4 Poridge
3 Fawlty Towers
2 Dad's Army
1 Only Fools and Horses
I love Fawlty Towers, Father Ted, Blackadder. So it’s great to see them on the list. Ones that I truly love that didn’t make it were The New Statesman, The Young Ones, Absolutely Fabulous, and of course Black Books (love Graham Linehan’s work).
Black books aired after 2000 so it wouldn’t qualify for this
No Keeping up appearances?? Whaaaaat?
Didn't care for the show myself, but I was very surprised it wasn't on the list.
Exactly
2 shows I found recently which, in my opinion, are severely underrated are;
The Thin Blue Line (cop sitcom with Rowan Atkinson) and Mind Your Language (english class sitcom with Barry Evans)
You can find every episode on youtube if you look hard enough.
I highly recommend them to those of us who appreciate intelligent, witty humour.
Also racist humour
Theye would just make a list of the top 1000 sitcoms.

My top ten list:
10) Man About The House

8) Keeping Up Appearances
7) Men Behaving Badly
6) Father Ted
5) Bottom
4) Falty Towers
3) The Goodies
2) Blackadder
1) The Young Ones
Where’s only fools and horses this list is now invalid
The Young Ones was one of my favorites.
you forgot about my favourite "On The Buses" which I am watching these days after I left England 32 years ago!
I ate you butler
Forgot to mention Rising Damp as well, another true classic!
@@jgdsghreviews5655 Hey, this is the best day of my life.............!
Mind your language is the greatest sit come ever made, i don't know why it is so underrated.
Cannot agree more.
I'm tottally agree... My favorite all time... :)
Finally bottom on one of these lists. I love that show
Are you living in hammersmith
stuart balchin he is a Hammersmith hardman
No Rising Damp ? That one of my favorites . No keeping aparences ?? Wha ???
Last of the Summer Wine ran for almost 300 episodes. Not everyone's choice of course. No swearing in it. However, it's longevity alone makes it many people's number one.
Brits have had the greatest comedy series ever created. You could have made a top 30 easily.
Great call for blackadder on top
As for number two. Missed the Office, though.
That was a fucking amazing show. Though I still think of Hugh Laurie as being Dr. Gregory House more than anything.
Blackadder was great but for me number one is and always will be Only Fools and Horses
I grow up watching so many of these shows ( even though I was born in 1991 ) I love many of these too, great video BTW!!!!
Father Ted and Fawlty Towers were my favorites. Even Allo Allo!
Those three are the best!
I'm happy that One Foot in the Grave was at least mentioned on this list. The show is so funny! one of my favorites!
should be in the top 5.
Yes, it should have!
These are my shows. I don't watch many new comedies and these are the ones I always watch to cheer me up despite knowing them off by heart.
The Goode Life should have been on this list.
No Keeping Up Appearances?
I've tried that show, it's soo bland!
@@joshgellis3292 It's a classic
Yay, "Are You Being Served?" made the list!!!! That show was only the second British comedic show I ever watched (the first being "Monty Python's Flying Circus") and I have been a huge fan of it ever since. I used to stay up late on Sunday nights throughout middle and high school to watch it, "As Time Goes By", "Goodnight Sweetheart", "May to December", "One Foot in the Grave", "Blackadder", "Fawlty Towers", and the other shows my local PBS (public broadcasting) station would air, and I adore Mr. Humphries, Miss Brahms, Captain Peacock, and Mrs. Slocombe to this day. That final scene of "Blackadder" made me cry, BTW, and my experiences with staying at a London hotel last December made me realize how "Fawlty Towers" was less of a sitcom and more of a documentary, LOL. Also, that "Steptoe and Son" sounds a lot like a hilarious show we had here in America called "Sanford and Son", starring the legendary Redd Foxx. Oh, and as for the rest of the shows: which ones would y'all recommend I try?
Sandford and son was a remake of steptoe and son
"Keeping Up Appearances"! I can't believe it didn't make the list!
Only Fools and Horses, Fawlty Towers, Father Ted and One Foot in the Grave are the ones I absolutely love. I've also seen Blackadder but don't really revisit it as much as those previous shows I mentioned. As for the others I haven't seen much of them so I can't really judge them as grand comedies. I've also love Keeping Up Appearances, Mr Bean and Vicar of Dibley.
Only Fools and Horses should be way up there at number one! I've never seen such a spectacular comedy that can have you laughing uncontrollably one minute and sobbing the next.
Completely agree, the characters are so well written and are all funny for very different reasons. Truly brilliant writing from John Sullivan
Definitely agree. I think David Jason was knighted especially for this. Love the running jokes like uncle Albert's "during the war". Watch an episode of it if you are down or depressed and you instantly cheer up
Watch Mojo hasn't got a clue o.f.a h anyday
It was at best smile humour, lately unfunny. Anything with Cleese in it is in another league
For me Only Fools and Horses was good but Jumped the Shark after Rodney Got Married. That's why I wouldn't put it that high.
I hate how the goodies is always forgotten. I know how it could be classed as controversial but it is still great.
The goodies is a sketch show
What? WHERE'S "The Young Ones"?!?!?
In the cult sitcoms list lol
Cult mate
What about Red Dwarf smeg heads
That's a cult classic. They made another list about those :P
It's been both cult and mainstream during its run but is mainly classed as cult
Mark Johnson a
My fourites:
Blackadder
Cabin Pressure
Open all hours
Still open all hours
Porridge
Dad's Army
Father Ted
Fawlty Towers
I think mind your language deserves a spot on the list
Isn't it Warmington on Sea not "Wallington"
Yes but seeing as the useless voice over dick head also couldn't pronounce Capt Mainwaring properly I'm not surprised.
"walmington-on-sea", but because the English can't pronounce English properly[source: get any English person to say "take the drawing out of the drawer in the drawing room" and cringe harder than you've ever cringed before]
+Derpimus Maximus, well considering it's English, the English pronounce it right. Just watch how the rest of the world can't say Worcestershire to save their lives.
Open all hours not even an honourable mention?
I know! A classic, Rising Damp wasn't mentioned either 😞
My grandfather used to/still does watch these. I remember when I was a kid, he always had one of these on. Sometimes it was blackadder, sometimes it was only fools, sometimes it was dad's army, sometimes fawlty towers or last of the summer wine... I never understood them as a kid but now I'm older I must say, he had great taste. I think many of us can thank our fathers and grandfathers for introducing us to stuff like this. It's important that they get passed on to the younger generations, us brits have always been the best at comedy and you can see that just by looking at this list.
Where was Last Of The Summer Wine?
It's so underrated! My Nannan introduced me to it around the same time I got into Only Fools and Horses(at about 9 or 10 years old)and I loved it! Only the older ones before Bill Owen's death, but still, I found it hilarious!
What about "mind your language"
Deserves number one position
Ye
F to Barry evans
Brits make fantastic TV! The humor and the brilliant writing just impeccable!
DUDE!!!! You completely missed “Waiting For God”. That’s almost as political as “Yes, Minister” with way more elderly satire than “One Foot in the Grave”. And how can you not mention “Keeping Up Appearances”?!?!? Mrs. Bucket(Buckéyyy) is about as classic as Mrs. Slocolm.
"Waiting for God" -- that was the other Britcom I never missed out on back in the '90s!! I always found it funny how the female protagonist of that show had the same first name as me, and I loved how sarcastic and dark the show's humor was.
Saw this on PBS for yrs. Loved the concept of mayhem at a retirement home.
I watched both shows on PBS on Saturday nights. They should have made it to the list
These great old shows like Only Fools and Horses and Dad's Army are so memorable andc funny. There's not much like them on TV now, which is such a shame
I will always have a soft spot for Butterflies and Bread and the Liverbirds
Love Black Adder, but Fawlty Towers is - BY FAR - the winner.
Where the hell are Mind Your Language and Keeping up Appearances!!!
Not even an honorable mention for Mind your language !!
I've been watching these videos just to see Mind Your Language get mentioned. What the hell?!!!
Fawlty towers, Blackadder and Mind your language best shows ever. EVER!!
Anyone who had actually watched Dad's Army wouldn't pronounce it "Main-worring" 😏
Quite! Appalling!
BOTTOM to me is number 1 BUT i'm just happy to see it on the list :)
Couldn't agree more
Only Fools and Horses should've been number 1.
And I'd replace Blackadder with Open All Hours.
Your insane
The 1st point. Yes
The 2nd point. Are you on Drugs?
Agree about Only Fools but Blackadder is better than Open All Hours
Get helpc
Rising Damp for me will always be number one!
I guessed what no.1 would be!
Not surprised that no ITV shows made the list, most of them were terrible. Having said that, Man About the House and Rising Damp were good. As for channel 4, Girls on Top, maybe?
I used to watch The Young Ones as a kid.
Bottom seems like what woukd happen if a couple of them grew up
Sorry, but where was Rising Damp on in the list - a truly British classic? I demand a recount!! How can you have Father Ted ahead of Rising Damp?
Father Ted isnt british anyway its irish.
It's actually a British tv show, though the writers and main actors are Irish...
Luke Kelly's Ghost Father Ted was filmed in England but most of the people involved we're Irish and has Irish humor
love rising damp and it should be on the list but no way should fr ted be replaced as without a doubt fawlty towers and fr ted have had more reruns than any other sitcom
I love classic comedy. I get a lot more laughs out of Only Fools And Horses and Dad's Army than Peep Show or Benidorm. I find it such a shame that there isn't too many modern comedies that are like classic ones. There should be more things like Count Arthur Strong and Still Game. 👍🏻
5:49 it's prounounced Mannering.
Kurt Denter I was gonna say that
I came down to the chat mid video to say this
And WARmington even though it's spelt Walmington (it's a standard English silent 'l' after 'a'). You get the feeling the reviewer has never seen the show.
I think this guy does it on purpose
It feels they they do at least one on these videos to stir up the comments section "Have you even watch the show bro??" kind of thing. It's a wired kind of narcasism i think
Great list. I love all of them.
WTF The Young Ones not on the list, that should be number 1
Well there's already Bottom.
Besides, The Young Ones was on their Cult list.
They used to air "The Young Ones" on our Comedy Central back when I was in high school and I never missed an episode. :D That and the OG "Whose Line is it Anyway?" (and IDGAF, I loved John Sessions) (BTW, I had a high school-era crush on both Tony Slattery and Paul Merton).
I simply can't believe that Last of the Summer Wine didn't make the cut.......
Is it at all possible to replace the muppet doing the voice over with someone who can pronounce stuff properly? From place names everyone in the UK should know, to words to main characters names in shows this tool gets them wrong. The other voice over guy is way better.
Agreed.
indeed.
Who is the other guy with the right pronunciation?
"'Allo Allo", "Keeping up Appearances", or "Vicar of Dibley", those are the top 3 in my opinion.
Maybe it's not a classic sitcom, but for me Keeping up appearances should be in top 3. It was the first foreign TV show that I was watching and it's still one of my favourites :)
My last ex-bf was a MASSIVE, MASSIVE fan of "Keeping Up Appearances". Me, I prefer this new prequel series they're going with because it's less cringeworthy to me.
It's not foreign, it's British. It's a bit cringe-worthy as well. Just saying.
@@paddybpaddyb9940 I love it but I must agree
Absolutely Brilliant
My top 11:
11 I’m Alan partridge
10 Leauge of gentlemen
9 Fawlty towers
8 dads army
7 Steptoe and son
6 blackadder
5 bottom
4 the royle family
3 father ted
2 red dwarf
honourable mentions: the young ones the inbetweeners Friday night dinner bad education are you being served
Tied Number 1 Porridge and only fools and horses
Like it or not that’s my opinion
Once in every lifetime there comes a love like this, oh I need you, you need me oh my darling can't you see... The young ones should have been on there instead of bottom.
I loved On the Buses and Love thy neighbour when I was a kid... They'd never get away with that stuff these days. 😄
I'm not sure if it's just me but Dad's Army is my favourite sitcom is it just me?
At least the classic version of Porridge seems to be better than the recent remake.
Jamie Murphy of course
Ugh, no idea why they did that. Nobody asked for it, nobody wants it, and nobody likes it. Goodnight Sweetheart had the largest and most positive response of all the shows they brought back, yet they didn't recommision it. They clearly don't care about what audiences actually want.
I'm 15 and my dad likes these shows so I grew up seeing them on tv. I'ts not on the list but my favourite is some mother's do av em 😂 Also only fools and horses is iconic
Vicar of Dibley is great but dated
Father Ted is still watchable
Top-notch list!
Last of the Summer Wine is missing why?
IchbinTimmii and vicar of dibley
Because it's shit, hah.
Argumentum ad populum fallacy. Mrs Brown's Boys is popular, Justin Bieber was popular, Hitler was popular. It can still be shit, despite its popularity.
Some Random Guy, is that a descending list of shitness? If so I would swap Bieber and Hitler. Glad to see Mrs Brown's Boys correctly listed as the most shit.
IchbinTimmii Because most of its audience are dead and don't watch UA-cam 😀.
Wait, what? Not even an honourable mention for Last of the Summer WIne?!
Some Mothers do ave em, Mr. Bean and the Thin Blue Line.
...are rubbish.
Oh betty
profdavebayani I love some mother’s do ave em but I wonder if other Americans do...
Oh, I've seen some episodes of "Some Mothers Do 'ave 'em" and one, it's fucking weird to see Michael Crawford in a totally comedic role and two, I really wish they'd air it on American TV because it's hilarious AF.
@@andrewcarson5850 Mr bean is comic genius, in that it transcends language, however I think it is more modern than classic.
Oh... You forgot Red Dwarf, damn you!
Only fools and Horses should be number one! Without a Doubt!
A reboot of Yes, Prime Minister aired on Gold in 2013.
Also, Dad's Army was set in WalMINGton-on-Sea, not WalLINGton-on-Sea.
At least it has two of my favorite British sitcoms: Are You Being Served and the Blackadder series. Long live Baldrick!
Some of my favorites were not here.....Keeping Up Appearances..The Good Life..Open All Hours..and Waiting For God
Whats that old british sitcome set in famine/victorian era? I think it was like league of gentlemen
No mention of "To The Manor Born" or "The Good Life"? What pillock made this list?
The kind of pillock who happens to be a millennial.
Welcome to watch mojo. They don’t have a clue about anything, just know how to use Wikipedia
The pillocks at watch mojo. I've seen a few of their videos. All shit. Vowed to never watch any more.
Then eventually click on one not realizing it one of theirs!
The kind of pillock who can't pronounce Mainwaring.
I’m shocked that Only fools and horses & Dad’s army weren’t in the top 10
Absolutely Fabulous, Gimme, Gimme, Gimme, Keeping Up Appearances, Allo Allo, You Rang M'Lord? or Let Them Eat Cake ( with only 6 episodes) - that's my favourite britcoms.
´Allo ´Allo will always be my favourite!
Are You Being Served? is a classic! 😍
One Foot In The Grave
Last Of The Summer Wine
Keeping Up Appearances
Waiting For God
Fawlty Towers#2
And yes....Vicar Of Dibly..
Just to name a few worth mentioning. 💟😊
Monty Python.
Very funny, but not a sitcom
Sketch mate
List would've been better if it was Father Ted and Blackadder listed five times each. I kid, of course: I love British sitcoms and I want to become more familiar with the classics I haven't seen, so this list looks like a good starting point!
OK hands up, which genius put this together without Rising Damp, Mind Your Language and Auf Wiedersehen Pet. You Muppet!
Couldn't have put it better myself!
Blackadder on top is perfect
Mind your language?
Doctor in the house?
Only Fools and Horses should've been No.1
I do love Blackadder, but OFAH should definitely have the top spot. My only gripe with it was that it declined in quality towards the end but even then it was very very funny.
Personally, I think Only Fools and Horses is massively overrated. There are much better and much funnier sitcoms
@@Codex7777
Too much of it. American quantity means American quality, unfortunately. HBO does excellent long-running dramas but most long-running American sitcoms either become soaps (like Friends or Cheers) or sentimental medodramatic crap. In 1982, OFAH was excellent but by 1995, OFAH was both.
Could you do a Top 20 edition of this please?
I'm sure others have already voiced this opinion, but Only Fools and Horses should have made it to the Top 3, at least. There are some truly classic shows but you can't say Father Ted is **better** than Only Fools, that's just not right.
Mind your language is the only British sitcom that the gobal audience can relate to .
Being Dutch, I have not seen all of these, but I’m definitely missing Allo Allo, Abfab, One Foot in the Grave, Vicar of Dibley, The Young Ones, Chef!, The Office, Manchild, Coupling. And if my list would also include US sitcoms... the list would still be the same, lol.
By manchild do you mean men behaving badly?
Only Fools and Horses
Mind Your Language
Porridge
Father Ted
I also liked "The Good Life" and "Butterflies" although that's a pretty good list.
Allo allo should have been number two, it was amazing
WatchMojoUK: There we are! Another full list, no ommision whatsoever
Monty Puthon's Flying Circus:
