Better to dismount. When you stay mounted, a good portion of your bodyweight stays on your knees, when you get off to the side and create an angle, you can transfer all of your weight to the neck, really helps when the opponent is bigger then you.
My coach took me this years ago he said that you should be able to finish your arm triangle with one arm the second arm is more for security reasons to keep them from escaping it’s nice to finally see this addressed on the Internet for others to learn
Check out what Jordan does in this clip when he shows the example of the bad bite, then adjusts by lifting the head up and pushing it into the bite with their other hand.
If you can’t use your other hand to push the bite deeper, using your forehead on their temple or ear is a really effective albeit mean way to get it tighter.
Almost the most underrated submission . Like guillotines …. Master the head and arm chokes …. Particularly forcing the appropriate entries for your sequence to finish
I 100 percent agree that the bicep grip is not necessary and that closing that space is really what’s important. However I still like to get that bite and grap my bicep.
@@JordanTeachesJiujitsu no I agree, it’s important to emphasize because a lot of guys think just death grip then get frustrated and give up on the sub. I think the arm triangle is an essential sub but kind of slept on in the region that I train in. Anyways thanks for the videos.
this only valid in a tournament fight right?? if it is a self defense situation, i would just take a good grip on the coach balls as my left hand is free😅
This is actually my favourite submission! Last class I thought I had my opponent but he said it was on his jaw and not on the neck. How could I know this and how could I get it to be on his neck if he managed to get his jaw in the way?
Arm triangle doesn't have to be right across the neck, if you do get that then great that's perfect, but have fun with that. The pressure on the blood comes mostly from their shoulder pressing into their neck, not their arm, and then obviously your arm on the other side. (You'll see in this video as well, her arm is on her jaw too). You need to be tight, like he said, no gaps, and then push your head in and pull your arms in with a slight torque.
Seems like most times, when someone doesn't finish the arm triangle, its cause they try squeezing before their ear is next to opponents ear. Should be easy finish if ear to ear and if you don't have a good bite, you can use your head to move theirs deeper into the choke.
I disagree. Most of the time the issue is squeezing before they take a good bite. The bite is the most crucial aspect. Your bicep pressure on the carotid matters much more so than the pressure of their shoulder into it.
@@JordanTeachesJiujitsu I understand but its hard to get a good bite when your ear is too high and there's alot more space to escape. Plus ear to ear allows you to get that bite deeper, especially if you dismount and drive your head into theirs. I think alot get excited and just start squeezing before being in the ring position. I def agree and no need for RNC/figure four grip. I actually think its looser but everyone's different
@@davidpignatore6532 while I think ear to ear is important, I think the bite is more important. If you have good ear positioning but not a good bite, it'll be difficult to actually choke them.
@@JordanTeachesJiujitsu i agree the bite is really important but I think ear to ear helps to get that bite deeper. Hard to finish with the ear barely past the elbow. That's what I noticed most when someone doesn't finish. Head is always high. Glad we could discuss with different pov's. I see your point.
@@m.w.r.1408 the question should be "would Islam have been able to finish with less strength using a gable grip" Is Islams coach better than him because he gives him technical advice? I don't put anyone on the pedestal. I'd love to grapple with Islam.
@@JordanTeachesJiujitsu no I was asking the original commentator if he was as good as Islam. Islam can do the unoptimal thing because he's the PFP#3 best martial artist on the planet. But people like us should stick to the basics until we get to that level
@@m.w.r.1408 very true and Islam is a sambo guy. His specialty is not submissions even if does get submissions. Doesn't mean he's bad at them but his specialist is definitely his wrestling, top pressure, and ground a pound. Many mma fighters aren't elite at everything. A guy like Islam is so strong he doesn't always need the perfect technique to finish submissions.
Very nice. I use Gordon’s “Handjob” method to remove that space from the arm triangle & if I get that far, it’s a 100% finish rate in my own experience (thus far.) I always say that the final finishing movement of a submission has to be perfect, because with time you will realise that the only struggle you should have, is actually doing everything else to get that far on your opponent (sweep, pass guard, transition to mount successfully, isolate limb.) THAT’S the hard part, don’t ever let yourself down by getting that far & not knowing the detail to finish, as that’s usually the most simple part of the whole process! yet happens so often!) Just as an example, think of how many people more experienced than yourself, do you roll with where you feel the submission is already on before they start the finish? Probably not as often as it should be, right? So make sure you’re really fastening you’re opponent’s collar as absolutely deep as possible as you can, when you Kimura someone, it shouldn’t be your arms vs their arm forcing them to surrender & why can you see your opponent’s artery on the side of their neck when you’re pull down their head to finish from the Triangle? Submissions need to be rehearsed & slowed down to the minimum possible speed, with a clear understanding on what the goal of each submission is & how to reach that goal through small steps that are usually ignored due to ignorance or impatience.
@@JordanTeachesJiujitsu yeah fair enough.. Do you knee ride the hip to finish or circle legs towards the head? i saw a detail thats helped me too when your shoulder may be riding a bit high and the finish is hard to drop it back below their chin and it comes on nice.
Bro you tap a girl . Come and do this to me , you have no chance to tap me like that . if you do this to a stronger oponent she/he can push you and make a space to get out her/his arm . Thats why you have to lock .

It's situational. More power to finish in side control, more control in mount. More often than not I'll dismount but if I don't have to, I won't.

One detail I see people miss to get the bite: finger walk with the arm that is under the neck to get your bicep closer and make it tighter
How if we have a bad initial bite can we improve it to make it tighter? I’d love to see a video on this on how to readjust without losing position
