A perfect addition to the 5 Room Dungeon and 5 Questions For More Interesting NPCs (adapted from a writer's exercise on building better characters and stories.)
re: naming being hard. DUDE! I hear you. I can name one thing - that's not so bad. But the sheer amount of things you have to name as a dm gets me every time.
This was a very different video, but I liked it. My humble suggestion: do make up your own stories & dungeons, but add some of your art to illustrate what you're speaking of. Your channel is all about being creative and making your own stuff, and I think you're 100% right to tell your own stories (on top of your drawings). Make characters, give them backstories and a motivation. Make a village, name it, give it NPCs (with portraits!). I don't know if this is your last video of the year, but just in case: merry christmas and a happy new year, bud.
in a campaign i'm running, one of my players' characters died. his character is a monk, so the party is carrying his body to a nearby monastery to see if they will help revive him. when they get there, the sensei of the temple will offer them a choice: they have 10 days to get a diamond worth 500gp (a material requirement of the 'raise dead' spell). they can either come up with 500gp or the diamond within 10 days, or the monastery can provide it, at the cost of the party joining as monks until their debt is repaid. i want to see what they do in the city to come up with money under a time constraint, but i'm also interested to see if they take the monk route and initiate a whole arc of monk training.
Wait, you said, "resurrect a character that MIGHT NOT HAVE WANTED TO DIE" (emphasis mine). Do you have players that want their characters to die? I almost fell out of my chair at that statement.
One other ‘C’: connections! There should be a connection to another space, NPC, puzzle, trap, world or dungeon lore in every location
Love it!
I love this! Not just one fight after another, but a story that the players can partake in. Thanks for the video!

Well done, love the "waters of life" idea.
Excellent and streamlined questions for fleshing out a Dungeons even more! Love it.
Awesome advice for a more immersive and fulfilling dungeon experience JP! Can’t wait to see the reimagining of the temple!

This is great inspiration, thank you!
"Congradulations! You successfully brought back your friends from the Gloomtide . . . And someone else!"

Awesome advice, as always, from an accomplished architect of adventures!
Love your videos JP! And your map drawing book gets a lot of use at our house. Keep up the good work!

Sounds so fun!!
Concepts, the 6th 'C' - next to "connections".
James those locations are no where near me come back to the Midwest!
Great stuff, as usual! Thank you!
Wow I haven’t seen your videos in a while.
These are some pretty good suggestions! :)
