I still think a video on making overworld or wilderness encounter maps out of these simple shapes would be incredibly useful, for making big maps quickly
I just had a thought for a map like this. What if you had some stickers you could put over a hex as players discover new locations? Might help encourage even more exploration if people are after that.
I thought the _exact same thing_ while he was filling out all those marsh hexes! Would be so cool to have some stickers to put over top of the "empty" hexes when discoveries are made randomly while traveling and whatnot. With a black-and-white map like this, it would probably be pretty easy to draw some up on label paper to stick on there.
I'm thinking back now of those cling sticker playbooks I had when I was a kid. But instead of like, Batman or something, it's a hexagon with a bunch of trees in it or something. Or a clearing with a lake, or a stronghold, etc. that'd be pretty cool.
Ha! I've had the exact same hesitation about Shadowdark's torch mechanic not being applicable in enough of a setting I want to run. Interesting thought adding an alternative that adds similar time pressure.
Thanks for the video! I love Sly, too, so seeing one of my other fave UA-camrs mention him was awesome! All your videos are so much fun to watch and this was no different.
Just subbed to your patreon for the map making pdf. I used some of your videos with my year 5 students this year when we made some maps and they looooved your tips on drawing icons. It will be awesome to have the printout to accompany your videos next year :D
Have you thought about producing digital assets of your map symbol designs? Would be amazing to be able to drop a set of symbols onto a digital hex map tool to produce a map in this style!
Another great video as always JP love the idea and I do something similar for my group, but with a smaller map! And talking about that would love to hear if you will come up with more postal dungeons? :D Pce!
Hey bud I really love your content and I just picked up your how to draw cities zine off your store. I'm going to be challenging myself to draw 1 map per week for the entire year of 2024 and fully keying them out. I love your laid back approach to mapping and if I stick with it I'm grabbing that how to draw dungeons maps zine too. 😊
Great video!!, I'm fascinated by the content on your channel to the extent that I'm already creating my own maps. When will you be selling your books in PDF format? I would like to purchase a few. since I'm from LATAM, specifically from Chile, and acquiring your books in physical form involves a significant cost for me. Greetings and a hug from the southern part of the continent!
Signing up for the Patreon is the best way! You get everything there. Otherwise I’ll be building a new site in a month or so that will have digital versions available!
Bro I just got your map making guide but I noticed there's another version, does that have the same info as the first one or it is expanded content? Awesome work btw.
The paper you choose depends most on the type of pen you are using. If you ink with microns like I am in this map and want something better than regular copy paper, try smooth bristol board.
First I love your videos! Your maps do look awesome!! Second, those books... are they avaiable in PDF? I don't live in the states and the shipping costs are $18 bucks which is kinda expensive when the book I want to purchase is only $12. Greetings :D
Thanks so much for the shout out! "He's so lazy!"
SHADOWDARK!! 🕳️

I like your water mechanic idea. That would well in a desert as well

Would be awesome to have a set of city icons and locations you can re-use
Like reusable decals you can place on a hex map mat? Cool!

YOU ARE AWESOME! ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
Shadowdark! The hydration tracking idea sounds awesome!
This is super useful. Thank you very much for presenting an excellent method as I was struggling with making my own hexmap for my own Shadowdark game!
I'm always in love with new JP ideas! Looking forward to getting these next year on patreon!

Really enjoyed the video! You really make map making seem so accessible!
Super timely! Just received your zine in the mail, so I know what I'll be spending time on this week. Excited to see this setting fleshed out.

HAH! That sounds fun too!
Once i made eurobuisness my own aditional map and new cards
Are the hex-rules included in making maps zine?
There are no rules. The Making Maps zine does come with an 11x17 sheet with a hex grid on one side and a square grid on the other though.
Did you grow up around Melbourne? I feel like you described the Indian River Lagoon.
Nope! In Jacksonville :)
having trouble finding that large size hex paper. Any suggestions?

Making Maps More Fantastical is more of the step by step instructions like the first. There's photos in the shop!
First-time mapper here. Do you have a recommendation which type of paper works best for mapmaking?

@@JPCoovert Thank you! My 6-year-old and I just made our first fantasy maps today. 🙃 So I wanted to stock up on paper and pens.
