Jeep replied to our information request 2 hours after this video was posted. So here are the verified facts (ignore what they say on their web site, and what you read in other articles.) The Trailhawk does in fact have Quadra-Drive II. The ONLY difference between Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II is that the latter has an electronic limited slip differential. They are otherwise identical. So our reference to QTII with an auto-locker basically describes the current version of QD II. The auto-locker engages in Rock mode.
Good sfuff here.
Love how thorough your reviews are. Keep up the good work.
"electronic limited slip" meaning electrically engaged limited slip, or an "e-diff", meaning the brakes are actuated to emulate having real limited slip diff when it is, in fact, an open diff?
Jeep has been dealing with parts shortages with the rear ELSD and has built Grand Cherokees that were supposed to have QuadraDrive2 instead with QuadraTrack2 and given a customer credit for the missing rear ESLD. That must be the case with your test unit since the rear diff didn’t show a locked symbol when you were in rock mode (26:40 in the video).
@@ethanmonat ELSD in QD2 is combo of variable lsd and true mechanical locker in one, Eaton manufacture offers the whole thing either automatically controlled by vehicle's sensors or manual locker button engagement, unfortunately automakers often choose locker auto engagement only just like in Grand Cherokee... But apparently as said in video the Jeep still has break based traction control, each is probably used by different modes i would guess
Thank you for not getting tired to explain AWD/4WD etc!
Love these videos As we all learn, not only from what these vehicles are capable of, but also what to do in any situation. That is, from a driver's perspective.. Thanks Ryan.
awesome non bias extensive in depth review loved it thank you for all the insight. going to go look at one today
Really appreciate your expertise and these long form videos. The level of detail is exactly what potential buyers need.
I love how you explain things, and the editing is spot on with each demonstration. Excellent videos. I honestly didn't know Jeeps were this capable until this video. Best of all, you explain things as they are intended to work with a sprinkle of tasteful opinion.
You didn't know Jeeps were this capable??? What rock did you just crawl from under? LOL Jeeps are arguably THE most capable offroad [civilian] vehicles you can buy.
@@tayl0rd553 he didn't know JEEPs were this capable??? Really???
he doesn't state it's practicality. not only can it get you up a mountain, it can also get you over a mountain.
If you want to see just how capable the GC is, watch some of the videos Prodigal Overland has on youtube. He puts the GC to the test more than in this video.
Showing LOVE for the channel thank you for another great video once again man especially on my personal favorite vehicle and trim!!!! Thank You and have a blessed day everyone
Honest review; thanks Ryan!
When Jeep first showed the redesign, I wasn't that big a fan. But this trailhawk, this I can get behind and I think it looks great!
Nice review. Very well done
THIS!! What an excellent review!! Great presentation, great examples!! You hit everything I was interested in knowing about this vehicle with the exception of road noise unless I missed it. Is this a quiet ride? Superb!!
What an awesome review! I drove one today ( in 2024) and buying this. Loved the comfort from every day city to off road. For snow in the PNW, I’m ready!
Nice review and detailed. I have a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit and I love this vehicle!
Great video! You just earned a new follower 👍🏼
The 2022 Cherokee Trailhawk is very nice. 2-Row!!! Nice in and out. I like the infotainment is integrated into the dash, not on stay out tombstone.
Towing capacity is 6200lbs with the 3.6L Pentastar V6 and 7200 (or 7400lbs) with the 5.7L HEMI V8.
The anti-fatigue factor of adaptive cruise and lane centering is underrated.
It’s overrated. It’s actually an annoyance and inhibits your stress free driving ability.
@@jerrymyahzcat Which vehicle/system were you using?
that is a big negative.
@@mallninja12 I wasn’t using one. I was referring to the System in the Jeep GC in this review. In this video the the system seems to be more of a pain in the neck and intrusive than useful.
However in systems where it’s well implemented I totally agree that it’s underrated.
I built the Dies that make this SUV. I get all the Silent Recalls. A waste of steel.
thankyou for testdriving literally every car im looking at
The WK2 trail hawk is still my favorite looking version, but the interior here is very nice indeed.
With dealer markups these days pricing is definitely "only a guideline."
Great review! I'll never hit trails as hard as you with my Hybrid Maverick but still look forward to your videos every week
I imagine not, as its a open differential FWD, so effectively one wheel drive, lol! Gotta be loving that fuel economy with this administration's gas prices! Youch!
did you pay over invoice for that Hybrid Maverick?
@@gosman949 MSRP. I pre-ordered in July 2021 and got it in March of 2022. If I didn't take delivery, my dealer would've sold it to someone else at a markup of at least 5k
@@erwinandfire wow- good job! But I will wait when I can get for less than MSRP. Those days are coming.
The 'S' in MSRP stands for 'suggested'. It was.................................. always a guideline.
Great presentation, content, demonstration of its impressive capabilities...which in my view could/would be enhanced with the QD2 air suspension and also if you had aired down the OEM tires; more aggressive tires would further enhance the off-roading experience!
I thouroughly enjoyed and, most importantly, learned a few things not only about the JGC but how different functions help or hinder its off-road use!
Kudos!
0:41 "THIS" gave me Doug DeMuro vibes 😂😂
Great video! Only thing that would have improved it would have been a more through comparison between rock and mud modes.
Really nice!
Thanks!
I just drove my 2017 grand cherokee overland from fort riley kansas military base to the bronx new york , and it was nothing but reliable i can just imagine the newer models 🔥
One road-trip doesn’t equate to reliable. 😂
I just wanted to add that my 2012 T4R Limited 4x4 was a full-time 4x4 and you didn't engage "part-time" 4wd as you put it. It also stuck to the road like a race car on curvy roads. It was great off-road with the exception of factory 20" rims even after wrapping them in some AT tires. My 2017 TRD OffRoad Tacoma DOES have to be locked in and shows at the gas pump FWIW.
13:30 "you can see living creatures BEFORE you hit them." Well, that's a load off. Always nice to look those critters in the eye before you show them who's boss! (I know he didn't mean it that way, but I still had to back it up and laughed a bit...)
Great video. Other thing to note is the Trailhawk comes with skid plates.
I own the 2020 and live in northern AZ, this woks out perfect for me. I love my GCTH
Jeeps are the best I have 3 of them and there are awesome great video.
Jeep Cult family ✌🦆
Big fan of your videos. I would like to see you compare the 4Runner ORP or Pro vs this Jeep. I’m in the market for a new vehicle and leaning towards the 4Runner but this Trailhawk looks legit.
Can’t wait for the Outback Wilderness vs Trailhawk video 🤞🏽
So glad I became a subscriber! Your reviews are always to the point and pragmatic. Enjoying my new Forester Wilderness.
I appreciate this format of review without overly rehearsed demonstrations: The infotainment is glitchy? Mention it. The 4x4 system is confusing to operate? Show it. The digital dash is weirdly laid-out and not intuitive? Show the confusion. If it's not intuitive to someone like you, with experience on lots of systems in lots of cars, it will confuse most people. Good to know. Keep it up!
Love it….but would love it more with the upgraded sound system and massage seats 😎
Thank You
Great video! Thank you for your thoroughness. The Trailhawks are taking quite a while to come out.
Nice color combo. I’m glad Trailhawks are keeping the newer SUVs off-road capable.
I just bought a 2022 Ford Maverick but I'm a huge fan of that color combo on an Outback Wilderness lol
Not without a matching spare they aren’t. Nor fir towing
WOW! I had a 2005 GC Rocky Mountain Edition and loved it. This Trailhawk is a great looking SUV but it is at or near Land Rover Discovery / Defender prices and even Lexus GX.
thanks for this awesome review. did you ever figure out how to lock the rear dif? i just found a used one of these with low miles and am tempted to purchase. have a 2013 JGC TH and love the snow and mud capability. wish i could afford this version though. suspension has begun to feel wonky on the '13.
Looks. So. Gooooood.
Nice. Very nice considering a used LR Discovery HSE with the 6 cyl is hovering around $60k and anything in a Toyota 4R TRD/Off Road(P) or Pro is going to cost you almost as much for basically 10 year old tech. And w/out a doubt this targets the Defender like a laser. Nice Job Ryan!
Nice Review! Great job as always! Can we expect a 2022 Nissan Frontier review soon? Looking forward to seeing you test out the 4 wheel drive system!
We just had the Frontier delivered yesterday.
the Frontier will be a pittance to the Jeep!
@@gosman949 Probably not, the Pro4x comes with a locking diff and while Nissan is the shittiest Japanese brand its still miles ahead of Stellantis. What you get with the Pro4x is what jeep pretends to be with its products.
Hi Ryan, so enjoyable and informative watching your posts; off topic, are you a Seattle Kraken fan?
Love the idea of having an NHL team, but no time to enjoy it myself.
So, the Trailhawk has Quadra-Drive 2, which is essentially the Quadra-Trac 2 but with an ELSD. the ELSD is different because it acts as a traditional LSD but can also transfer up to 100% of the torque to either wheel. It’s all automatic, except for shifting into 4LO.
Confortable, beautiful stuff inner similar like flight actualy for jeep. Screen position and track motivation space.
I liked it very much, that’s the Land Rover for Middle class!
They killed the concept
Nice video, I wish they would work out the sluggish function on the display. But, certainly a great vehicle.
Do they have built in wifi 🤔
Yay! Been waiting for a review of the Trailhawk! Pre-ordered one in February and still waiting to get it. Is it smooth on the highways/freeways? How quiet is the ride?
Damn - when do you expect to get it?
The Trailhawk is by far the best looking trim option on the new GC generation. I wish you could option for the Nappa leather on the seats on the Trailhawk like you could on the WK2 platform. Seems silly Jeep doesn't allow for that anymore, at least currently.
It would be cool if you could test the other trailhawk products on the test hill
I love mine! Gonna keep it forever
I would like to see the jeep vs 4 runner trd pro
Well, "Seltic" instead of "Keltic"; the nav system is obviously a basketball fan.
One great thing about the previous gen TH was it came standard with the SRT seats, a big upgrade over the seats in all the other trim levels. I doubt the seats are distinct now.
Wow!! Pretty capable ride! From what I understand, air suspensions tend to become really stiff when raised. I would like to see the difference in travel with it raised and lowered. I noticed that when you disconnected the sway bar on the climb, it didn't seem to change much. Maybe an inch. Still, great review as always!
Air suspension is pretty stiff at full ride height...its also very expensive to fix when it fails, and it will fail. Disconnecting sway bars on an independent suspension vehicle isn't really going to gain you much suspension travel...A-Arms don't give much travel in the first place, and disconnecting a sway bar ain't gonna do much LOL.
@@wildbill23c fun fact. Did you know an aftermarket icon suspension or billsteien suspension instal and parts is between 6 to 10k to install and buy. Similarly it costs a lot to repair as well, similarly priced to the air suspension on this vehicle. Listen folx there’s a lot of old main stay information bits we pass around, but it’s 2022 and times have changed a lot. You can’t just make blanket statements and write things off so easily, do a few googles it’s not hard to find out the information I just spoke on. Also was in Moab with my 2021 bmwx5 with air suspension and talked to a few Toyota folx with tricked out systems and they concur for the most part about cost. The icon suspension on two of the rigs plus all the tires and wheels and beeded rims cost nearly 30k on those trucks. It’s all expensive run what you want have fun, you’d cry if the jeep broke you’d cry if the used off road jeep broke too, just have fun.
I have the new Ford bronco badlands with sway disconnect and it makes a world of difference in articulation. It will take a tire that's a few inches in the air and set it back on the ground.
@@LafemmebearMusic air suspension doesn't last as long though. True story. 👀😏
@@wildbill23c Wonder if it disconnected under load? Some vehicles need the load off the bar to disconnect.
Wow! Your demonstration is amazing..
Now That is a good looking suv
Please do the same test with the trackhawk!
Loveee GC.
I wish my sedan would have a good ground clearance! I like the dirt road drive!
Would you recommend to keep a 2021 4runner or go for the new Grand cherokee?
yeah , I am going to save money and probably buy a used 2022-23 trailhawk. Hope those glossy piano black interior won't get too much scratches. Otherwise I'd save one more year for a new one. The new gen is just looking so much better.
I've got a 2013 JGC Overland. Would be fun to do a side by side comparison with the first version of the WK2 and the new Grand Cherokee on your course.
My WK2 trailhawk locks, the rear differential in mud and rock mode and auto locks and four-wheel-drive low and it will indicate it’s locked on the Offroad pages. I believe the chief you are driving, is not equipped with the rear locker, which is very similar to the one used in the Honda passport.
Had 2007 , had 2013 grand Cherokee, hope this is more reliable , Isee nice Lexus GX in background 😀
Jeep offers a full time 4x4 in the wrangler as well
In certain models, and I think a couple years ago they actually offer a Rock Trac full time 4WD option in the Wrangler Rubicon.
Out of all the car manufacturers currently Stellantis seems to be making the nicest vehicles.
I agree it is disappointing they don't offer manual lock button, maybe their goal is to keep it fully automatic
Some of the vehicles when you're comparing have selectable 4wd auto which works just as well as all time 4wd.
Jeep has also just updated pricing on the website on Friday.
Fantastic SUV.
My Question is on Gas or Electric Vehicles when you have the option to raise suspension like that does it stay raised permanently until you lower it or will it lower on its own
How do you make an off road vehicle?
Jeep- Gloss black plastic on the dash.
A spare tire is actually very useful. In the event you have a blow out or just a flat tire, you can mount the spare and drive off. It is however a temporary tire, it is not sized to give you the same ride performance and to minimize space in the cargo area. This tire will allow you to self recover saving you time and money until you get your factory wheel / tire replaced.
For the price point and the facts it’s an off road focused vehicle, not having a standed full size spare shows Jeep is still cutting corners
Darn I was really hoping it would do good in snow. I’m terrified of snow and I want a really great vehicle for off-roading and commute driving.
The best trim
There are options in the menu to change how the steering feels.
Great family 4X4 at a reasonable price, and before you complain about how to use this tech, first learn how to use it, still a great video.
I’ve heard that there is no 2023 JGC trailhawk offered until you step up to the 4xe model.. if that’s true it’s out of my price range and I’m curious if the Honda passport trailsport would be a contender to the JGC altitude model (one above the Laredo model).
Another great video! If you're taking requests, would love to see if your take on the 2023 Sportage Hybrid AWD.
Here in The Netherlands black is the only TrailHawk no option color. The other four colors cost 1,300 euros extra.
The red tow hooks are good for extra 10 kms per hour
If they weren't red they wouldn't matter. :)
Thanks Ryan! I have been waiting to see this specific trim! Ps why would you get a Trailhawk in 2wd? Lol
Same reason people buy 2WD Jeeps to begin with...so they can pretend to have a Jeep, but without the Jeep capabilities and to save a few bucks and then quickly spend more than that when they get the thing stuck all the time.
@@wildbill23c best comment on here🤣
order my trailhawk many months ago should be here in 2 to 3 weeks
good luck!
I drove across entire Canada in car with no self driving and then with decent self driving and self driving makes all the difference.
When you drive 13 hrs a day you just will be much more tired without it.
In the city where people cut in all the time won't be great but once you get on highway it's good
Could you tell me why Jeep would provide a spare tire that is basically useless? Just freaking weird!
How does this compare to your old 5th Gen 4Runner with regards to off-road capability?
I’ve looked a few times and looked again this weekend. I’m not seeing the Trailhawk available on jeep website either last year or this year unless you go with 4XE; wondering if it was discontinued due to supply chain I know that there have been several auto media outlets that mentioned the air suspension was deleted due to supply chain.
Would you be able to do a review of the 4xe version of the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk?
I wish Jeep will keep the Mercedes’ one lever to use wipers indicators etc. it’s simple and is only one stick not two behind wheel
Ah you missed the send the map guidance feature from the passenger side, where they can pick a map location and send the route as a suggestion to the main display for the driver.
Wow, this is way better then a defender.
Rattle might be the rear seatblet hanging and hitting piller back thier
I believe the spare tire is the same diameter. It might not be the same with and height but it’s still the same diameter therefore it’s able to be used with 4x4
I have a 2018 grand Cherokee summit. It has rattles like you described at 22:10, which I am attributing to poor quality control. Guess things haven't changed lol....
How reliable is the air suspension on these GC's nowadays? Idk how many Ram owner's needed their systems replaced on 4th gen rams back when I sold stuff at a dealership. Appealing SUV otherwise.
Have you tried pressing padlock icon on the screen to lock it?
I had 2005 grand Cherokee with quadra drive II. I would expect Trailhawk to have it
I saw one of these at the LA Auto Show. The interior is gorgeous. This is what I would like the 6th get 4runner to be like, minus the rear independent suspension. Or would this better compete with a GX. If that's the case then Lexus needs a new GX soon.
yea i dont think this necessarily competes with the GX because the GC is a regular unibody whereas the GX is body on frame..
The passenger screen would be useful if it allowed the passenger to enter map destinations. I hate having to pull over to enter an address ... and if the passenger could do it from that screen, that would be handy when traveling.
Actually, supposedly it does! We saw the Jeep Overland at the Auto Show in New York back in April and that was one of the things that had me jazzing over getting a '22 with a passenger screen versus getting an older model without one since I'm new to learning about these vehicles.
Since I am most often in the co-pilot seat, I loved the idea of not having to reach over to edit the central map panel but being able to do it from the passenger seat and then "swipe left" to send it to the central panel. So is that not true in the Trailhawk trim?
I have the JG Overland with it and my wife can input the directions and send it over to my screen.
